Despite having to hear an employee on their phone taking smack about their life and spewing negativity in a "spa" environment I decided to give this a chance. Awful experience! First, its hardly private in the upstairs massage area having curtains instead of walls between you and other people. Just waiting for a weirdo to pull the curtain back and peek right? Second, the colonics is not at all beneficial and it is VERY painful. I can say, after having a child, its reminiscent of labor and a sharp object up your ass and it stays that way the entire time. I also was constipated for 4 days AFTER struggling to pass rock hard pellets of crap that the turbo jet of water compacted up my a$$. Literally, it was so painful I kept sweating and I thought I was going to vomit. I leeked water out my a$$ off and on for hours after that and had to wear a pad. My stomach stayed distended with several pounds of water weight and this is day 5. This is a rip off and by no means medical. I just hope I don't have some disease or something now. RUN AWAY! These people should be ashamed of themselves. CLEARLY some of these reviewers must be friends of the people who "work" their or the people who "work" their themselves. read more

Spectacular experience and service excellence! I often visit Ruby Room for crystals, cards and essential oils when I am visiting Chicago. Today I tried out the spa services and had a colonic with Laura. It was one of the best services I have received to date. She was genuine and kind, attentive and very knowledgeable. She walked me through the process and provided additional applicable information that I could use to improve my health and wellness on a regular basis. I highly recommend seeing Laura for optimal health. read more

I've lived in Chicago for 2 years now and am familiar with most of what Wicker Park has to offer. Ruby Room is a participant in the community. From Free yoga Sundays to their ultra relaxing atmosphere and unique services (aura readings, hair consultations, crystal bar, yoga...) they will give you something that lasts beyond your visit. Expect to leave feeling more alive, more centered, and beautiful -- inside and out. Also, if you ever need a retreat in the winter months, which can be brutal here, check out their events section on their website! read more

I found the Ruby Room through Groupon & had my hair cut and highlighted by Christina... I'm told she's one of their "master stylists" and she lived up to the title. I've never received more compliments on my hair! I've been back now for a second hightlight from her and will be back again. I feel very lucky to have stumbled across Christina - I would recommend her to everyone reading Yelp looking for a great colorist....... read more

I found Laura, hairstylist, completely by ACCIDENT. To make a long story short, I broke my elbow and could not style my own hair for a TV segment I was doing at the break of dawn on a Tuesday morning. I NEEDED to find a stylist on Monday afternoon to wash and style my hair so it would still look good the next morning. Yea right. EVERYONE is closed on Mondays. Driving down Division in a panic I saw Ruby Rooms lights on. I called and bam, I was in Laura's chair in five minutes. I told her what I needed and she gave it to me. She was awesome. So cut to a month later, I called Laura for a cut and color. I wanted to see if she could be fantastic twice in a row. Not always is a good stylist a good colorist. Game on, Laura. Well.. My hair has never looked this good. Ever. She gave me a great new cut and a beautiful color. AND IT WAS CHEAPER THAN MY HIGHLAND PARK salon. Signed, sealed, delivered. Laura, I'm yours..... read more

I'm a huge fan of the Ruby Room. When I relocated to Chicago from California two years ago, my visits to the Ruby Room eased the adjustment. Toni is just lovely ... and knows exactly what to do with my less-than-desirable hair. I highly recommend her. I just met Paul, a fairly new addition to the spa team. Great eyebrow wax, very gentle, along with some fun conversation (and a fabulous makeup touch-up to hide the red). read more

i went for the first time today april 13th 2011. I had a colonic for the first time. I had a great experience. Christina was my therapist and she made me comfortable and would recommend her to anyone. I am actually going back again. The other areas of the Spa are wonderful. I didn't realize you could do hair, make-up, astrology and other related aspects and numerous healing options. I am into astrology and gems and healing so i was impressed and amazed they offered those services and had amazing jewelry and stones with so many meanings. I bought a bracelet and will get one for my mom and get gems/rocks for others and myself. LOVE IT read more

I should have written this sooner but I just thought about it now. I went to get a facial about 3 weeks ago here. I have had facials before, but this was the best ever. I was so relaxed and he did such an amazing job. Paul is the guy to see if you want a completely relaxing facial. read more

I have only stayed in the hotel part and had no services done at the spa. For the price, the room was awesome. One of he most comfortable beds I've ever slept in. Very calming energy and relaxing space. The bathroom is awesome as well. The shower is custom, doubling as a steam room! All Aveda shower products. If you don't mind: No cleaning staff (unless asking for it), front desk leaving between 7-9pm, no room service, and no elevator- then I would recommend staying here for short stays! It sounds like a lot, but it really isn't a big deal. I like that they are trying to be green by not washing everything in the room EVERYDAY of your stay. It is a old/historic building, so no elevator. I really like the location as well, very short walk to the blue line. And very short drive to downtown. Nice, safe area, with a variety of places to eat. read more

I found this Spa and Store on Groupon. I was looking for a gemstone shop and stumbled on their Groupon ad for a Spa package (which I was not interested in but read they are also a gem store). The ambiance is relaxing and beautiful. The gentleman that helped me was very knowledgeable and polite. I can't comment on their spa services so the 5 stars is strictly for their shop, however I will definitely be back and try out their spa in the future. read more

My appoinment was pushed back a little, but they called to let me know in advance. Theresa was awesome with my hair! Ruby Room is such a gem in the neighborhood! read more

I have been practicing yoga for 6 years now and Tina Nauha is my absolute favorite teacher! At the beginning of each class she asks "what hurts" what each student wants to work on and any specific poses we want to practice in the hour and a half class. She teaches Tuesday-Thursday at 7 and has become my guru! The girl does it all; she chants, plays the chakra drums and makes each class different and fun! If you practice yoga, you'll love Tina!! read more

I had a wonderful experience at the Ruby Room today. My massage therapist, Kimberlyn (sp), was amazing. She listened to me as i described my problem areas and she did her own analysis by assessing my posture. The massage was then focused on my problem areas. She also told me different exercises to do in the gym to balance out my weak areas. It was the best massage i've head in Chicago and i've been to several places in the loop and Wicker Park/ Bucktown area. I also received a gloss in their salon and my hair looks great! The only downside is getting on the schedule! You have to book your appointment far in advance. I will be back! read more

I originally came to Ruby Room because I purchased a Groupon and was dying to get a massage. As luck would have it, I was given an appointment with Amy and had an awesome experience! She did a phenomenal job. I run on a regular basis and have had some trouble with my IT band and hip flexors and Amy picked up on that in a massage and was able to give me stretches to help. Her knowledge was impressive, especially compared to others I have seen in the past. I have since received waxing services and facials (all from Amy) and love this place. The facials here are amazing and Amy has really helped educate and empower me to take better care of my skin. I never thought I would get more than one facial every once in a blue moon, but I have had two in the last couple of months and already have another scheduled. It is not close to my house at all, but it is well worth the time and effort it takes to get there! read more

I love the Ruby Room! Always good service, totally chill atmosphere, and great hair cuts. Toni is the best! Not to mention all the goodies in the retail part of the space. I look forward to every visit! read more

Last Saturday I went into Ruby Room for a Facial with Alisa. The assistants behind the counter were super friendly even though it was really busy. They offered me Tea and water and hung up my coat, and even chatted with me a bit. Alisa came and met me in front immediately and took me back into the spa. We discussed my skin concerns and went over a plan for the facial. Now, It seems like the day I turned 30 (two years ago ) my entire skin chemistry changed. For the worse. I have had facials in the past and mostly they felt like one size fits all. But Alisa really made me feel like she was tailoring the facial to suite my needs. It was super relaxing and her message was ON POINT! I almost fell asleep! I wish I could take her home and put her in my medicine cabinet! Now, I know its their job to try and sell you things after a facial. And in all honesty I never buy anything. But Alisa wasn't pushing stuff on me AT ALL. She really listened to the concerns I had about my skin and offered some alternatives to my current regimen. and guess what? I bought the stuff. And guess what? It has changed my life!! I'm not kidding. My skin looks and feels amazing EVERYDAY. I actually look forward to washing and moisturizing my face every morning and every night. All in All I had an amazing experience. If you're in need of a facial, A SERIOUS FACIAL, go see Alisa. She will change how you think about your skin! OH!! one more thing. The Bath Salts (Ruby Room brand) are flipping incredible, get a bag! read more

I was in a bind and the staff were extremely helpful. Thumbs up!

I had a facial last week and I have to say it was one of the best facials I have ever had. The products they use are amazing! I had Ali as my aesthetician, and she was also kind, knowledgeable, and had a lot of great suggestions for my skin. I bought a few of the serums from the product they sell and my skin already looks so much better and brighter! I will definitely be going back. read more

I recently used a groupon for a hair cut with Theresa. She was wonderful and I was very happy with the service. Hair cut was great and Theresa was very helpful! They don't mess around w/ massages here. I had a GREAT massage experience. Would highly recommend it. Have not tried their other services, but was very impressed with what they do have to offer. Get a massage and ask for Gladys. The only minor flaw was that it was a little difficult to schedule an appt and get on their calendar--even during the weekday. That's how good/busy they are, I guess! read more

I loved my first experience here. Had a colonic with Star. So you know i cant be full of it. Shes great; we were laughing and joking through the parastalsys. Im going back again soon. I dont know; but it couldve been uncomfortable; but shes a great communicator and read me very well, and was able to interact in a way that made ME comfortable. I had a great experience, & i wouldnt trust just anyone going up my rear end. Believe me. Naturally, there are great selections of items and products to enhance your wellness regimen. Im pretty well stocked, but got several items that were worth while. Its a great vibe; and a great concept that i can enjoy at my liesure. Yeah; there are lots of choices these fays in salons; but this is a unique business platform which includes intuitive work and choices. That works for me. I highly recommend Star; and the smudge kits. Now, if i could only get my stylist Maria to work there, i'd have it all under one roof! read more

I really liked this hotel for its location and boutique, indie feel, but was very disappointed by the service. I accidentally left a dress hanging in the room (had to catch a 6am flight!) and it was never returned to me, even after I called and emailed them multiple times. Very disappointing! read more

ruby room is the coolest place in the city u walk in and your greeted by very warm and friendly receptionists... im always taken back by the energy of the place.. good vibes.. lots of crystals lots of stuff to look at. Ive always shopped here but never had my hair done. YES there is a SALON as well. very diff. feeling than other salons..not stuffy or egotistical cosmetologists. I asked for a random stylist and got teresa.. let me say she has an amazing energy about her very smart informative an friendly made me feel very comfertable. ive never liked my haircuts and this was the BEST HAIRCUT of my life... she asked me lots of questions about my hair and what i wanted and gave me the best haircut ive ever had and it lasted for weeks. ruby room has some great energy great gifts to look at and some real talent. i recommend teresa for all hair services read more

What a great spa! You feel zen from the moment you walk in the door! I usually only get massages there and was in a crunch and decided to try their salon and had a great experience as well. A great consistently amazing experience each and every time! read more

I stayed at The Ruby Room recently. They advertise their rooms as quiet and tranquil and give that as a reason there aren't any TVs or phones in the room. A place for quiet relaxation. However, the building is old and the walls are paper thin. I heard other guests walking in their rooms overhead. Add to that the constant din of Division St and the Ruby Room becomes the least quiet and tranquil place in Chicago. There is a steam shower, which is fine...but there is no water pressure. Also, the water switches back and forth between scalding hot and icy cold depending on whomever else using their shower at the same time you are. The weather in Chicago went from 80 degrees to 55 degrees during my 2 day stay. I could tell no discern able difference when I put on the heat or the air in the room. My room was always slightly uncomfortable temp wise. The bed was comfortable. There is no housekeeping. You can ask for it, but you won't receive it. This place has no real amenities except its claims of a quiet, relaxing atmosphere...which are false. It's just an old drafty building. I like this area and next time will stay at the Wicker Park Inn. read more

I was late to an appointment once, and was extremely apologetic. My stylist, however, is among the set that doesn't accept apologies and was the crabbiest crab who ever crabbed. She gave me the cold shoulder and was rough and almost retalitory with me during my entire session. Barely did anything and what she did do was craptastic. I never went there again. read more

The most ridiculous scam ever! The owner should be ashamed of herself! She took a great concept (development of one's spirituality) and turned it into a retail hobby as only she could. If you are interested in acupuncture services, go see an acupuncturist, if you are interested in a guru, search for one. If you are looking for a $500.00 hand bag or $100.00 crystals you have then gone to the right place. read more

What a waste. I recently had an eye brow wax and massage at Ruby Room. I arrived to my appointment 20 minutes early to be courteous and allow time for paper work and to change. When I arrived the desk clerk said to just wait and someone would be with me soon. Well 20 min later I was taken back to the treatment room on the way passing a very comfy waiting area where I would have liked to have spent the last 20 minutes rather then the loud store front area listening to people check out. My eye brow wax by Amy was very good and I would consider going back. My massage, however, was very disappointing. First of all the women's nails were long and were scratching me the whole time. I didn't want to be rude so I didn't know how to address this issue. Second she took a bunch of oil and just started massaging it into my face. Now I have fairly good skin but needless to say I broke out after this experience. The worst part was after the massage I looked at the clock and she ended the massage 14 minutes early. Now if i had been late that would have been one thing but when the massage cost $100 an hour and I was there on time I want every minute. Lastly, when I came out instead of being allowed to relax I was immediately pounced on to buy some bogus Chakrah spray. That just really pissed me off. Also she tells me I should come back for a massage in 3 weeks. Dear god, I can't afford another massage in 3 weeks especially when you only get 3/4 of the time you paid for. Bottom line, please have your employees cut their nails, allow me to wait in the seating area, don't put oil all over my face without asking, give me the whole time i paid for, and on your form ask me if i am interested in learning about your products and if not don't be a buzz kill and start trying to sell me things after I have just paid to relax. read more

HORRIBLY disappointed. Booked a couples massage at 9am to surprise my boyfriend for our anniversary. Got a call from Ruby Room as we arrive 10 minutes before our appointment to CANCEL. Offered a card reading in replace of our couples massage... a CARD READING?? No thanks. I understand things come up and cancellations happen however, we were offered zero compensation for the inconvenience. Very poor customer service for a couple scheduled to pay $$$ for an hour and a half long crystal massage. Sending our business to fit foot in Lincoln Park for a $30 massage... read more

I visited the Ruby Room, for the first time on Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 2:00pm. I planned to treat myself to a Chakrassage for my birthday. I don't recall the name of my massage therapist, but her name began with an "L". She was a skilled massage therapist, but she lacked tact. As she began to massage my thighs, she INAPPROPRIATELY told me that I needed to get to a gym and tone up my inner thighs! I cannot count how many body massages I've had and enjoyed without incident. I have never felt as though I had to have a toned body in order to get a massage. A massage is about a relaxing, healing experience, not demeaning in any way. Needless to say I got hot all over after this comment. My relaxed state was interrupted by anger. I didn't complain after the service because I didn't want to escalate the situation and totally ruin my day. My massage service was followed by a nice make-up application by a very nice make-up artist. This helped ease my discomfort. The massage therapist whose name begins with an "L" needs sensitivity training. Her job is NOT to criticize her clients. She is to keep negative energy out and bring positive in. I will NOT visit Ruby Room again and I will share my experience with others. Millicia read more

The bed was comfortable, the room was clean, & the atmosphere was calm...until the beast of division woke and reminded us what comes with stays in the city. Blaring police sirens, shattering glass(the gym below us was broken into) , car accidents, and the drunken denizens loudly making their way home. We are on the 4th floor mind you, and still able to hear all of this. Fast forward to the morning, and you get the staff making constant back and forth trips to the laundry room, which is conveniently located just outside our room. Many times the employee forgot the code for the door and frustratingly would push the door only to suddenly remember the correct code for entry. The people below us were really enjoying the novelty of the steam bath...they seemed to like turning the system, on, off, on, off, on, and finally off. When you get here (you know your going to ignore the warnings and come anyway because someone really attractive wrote a glowing review) you will realize why the steambath systems check was driving me insane. The ruby room advertises peace and tranquility. The establishment should invest in soundproofing the rooms. The ruby room is very concerned about ensuring its guests enjoy a peaceful and relaxing environment, so there is plenty of threats to boot you out if you're too loud while staying at the place. No tv or a phone in the room, to ensure relaxation and quiet. Its 9:19 on sunday morning, as I'm writing this review there is a very noticeable vibration felt in the entire room...the laundry is almost done and the spin cycle is working its magic on the sheets. minutes later I hear someone punching in the security code, then the laundry room door loudly creaks open. It's the staff, again. Its not quiet, its not peaceful...but it looks really nice. Soundproof the rooms! read more

Ruby Room has great services, but the thing that keeps me form coming more often is the constant upselling! You can't just go get a massage or a healing treatment without then having to have a 20 minute consultation about your "wellness plan", which means about $100 in merchandise they want you to buy. It's a shame, because the concept of the place is so cool. read more

If you're looking for a $160 rate with no service what so ever, this is your go to place. I paid $160 usd per night and had no cleaning service during a 5 day stay. Thank you Kate for your customer service. I appreciate your quick response to my problem.

So I went because I also had a groupon. As the girl was several minutes into putting the color in my hair, she mentioned to me that they have to charge an extra $15 per bowl and since I have long hair, she would have to charge me. My hair is shoulder length! When I expressed my disappointment that she had not told me of the policy before she started the process, she got very defensive and kind of rude. The color is not what I asked for and the cut is boring. I would never waste my money there again. read more

Truly disappointed! This review is not for the spa or salon but for the sales floor. I walked by on a snowy day and saw their front window had a table with a sale sign for 75% off. I decided to walk in. Mind you it was early afternoon and it was our first real snow for the year, so you could imagine, the store was dead. I saw a sales associate on the phone and she stared right at me, no smile, or hello. I looked around for a minute and still was not greeted. I thought perhaps she was still on the phone, but she wasn't. Instead she was stocking stuff away or something, I asked her about the table that had the 75% sale sign and she cut me off and told me if was only for the hair curler and then turned her back at me. Incredibly rude and unprofessional. I was not greeted when I walked in, was not acknowledged while in the store, and nothing said when I walked out. Such poor poor customer service! read more

I loved the hair color they gave me, but what I DIDN'T love is that they charged me $130 to do it, claiming they needed to charge me $30 extra for more hair dye. Which doesn't make sense, considering my hair is the same length as a place that changes me $60 to dye it. They also CHARGE you to dry your hair after they dye it. Who does this? I will not be back. I only went here because I had a coupon, but overcharging customers is not cool. read more
