As I was standing outside the entrance to a casino steakhouse reading the menu, the urge to go in to enjoy an overpriced steak just wasn't there. Instead I hopped into an Uber and headed for a more local joint. That's how I ended up at the Ruby River Steakhouse. Inside the place divey feel I was looking for: an old guy sitting at the bar reading a book, a couple that looked like they were on their first date since getting married and having kids, and other assorted locals who were commentating out loud about the Thursday Night Football game on the TV. This was the scene I'd rather have than a white tablecloth steakhouse. While the scene was what I wanted, the food was hit and miss. My ribeye was very well seasoned but the cut was missing a lot of marbling and flavor a ribeye should have. The french fries were very inconsistent: some were overcooked and some were undercooked. I did enjoy my side of sauteed mushrooms, a perfect compliment to a steak. When it comes to a enjoying a more local-like steakhouse I would say Ruby River was the right choice. It won't blow your socks off in the food department but it will make you feel right at home in Reno. read more

But, for the cost... I'm likely to come back despite having a few issues. I ordered between Medium Rare and Rare... I received Blue to Rare. I ate most of it though, but that just showcased the quality of the cut which wasn't really impressive. A prime cut would have worked... The garlic mash was tasty but was barely even warm. The fresh bread was unseasoned and bland and the whipped butter couldn't save it. The service was a bit slow even though they weren't anywhere near capacity. I ordered a coffee and a root beer and was waiting for refils and had to ask. I still tipped 9 bucks on a $41 meal. If the service was prompt and the mash,, warm, it would have been rounded off to $60 but I felt like leaving two pennies face down but didn't have change with me. Will I come back? I'm not sure... there are plenty of steakhouses in the Reno / Sparks area that are rated higher that i haven't yet tried. Amazing steak at a reasonable price? Yeah, I'm sold! We heard great things about Ruby River Steakhouse from a couple of our friends and we just so happened to be in the mood for steak! Ruby River Steakhouse is located across the street from the Peppermill Resort. You can't miss them with their roadside sign either! Once you walk through their doors you'll be greeted with a large barrel of peanuts. They're not just for show either. You can help yourself to a scoop or two while you're waiting for your table, that is, if you need to wait for your table. Luckily for us, we were shown to our table almost immediately after entering the restaurant. Their decor reminded me of the Rodeo and took me back to when the Reno Rodeo was in town. The first thing I noticed on our table were two beer bottles. When lifting one of them up did I realize that they were actually salt and pepper shakers; how creative! Our server, Dylan, did such an amazing job. It was such a smooth dinner service. When he first came by to take our food orders, we knew exactly what we were getting. For appetizers, we ordered the Build Your Own Sampler. Our three choices were the Artichoke Dip, the Steak & Avocado Eggrolls and the Browning Onion. For our entrees my friends ordered the Peppered Bacon Sirloin and the 12 oz Ribeye. For me I had to get their 10 oz Prime Rib. The Build Your Own Sampler arrived shortly after and it looked like a complete masterpiece. That in itself could be a meal on its own. The artichoke dip was paired with Parmesan bread for a simply satisfying bite. The steak and avocado egg rolls, when dipped in their cilantro ranch, made each one of us look at each other with a nod of approval. Lastly, the browning onion with their River Sauce was my favorite of the three. Every bite was crispy and their sauce had a creamy and smoky aftertaste. When our food arrived, I sampled a couple pieces from both of my friends' steaks and they were well seasoned, especially the Ribeye. I absolutely loved my Prime Rib. The tastes of the au jus and grated horse radish blended well with every bite of the prime rib. Out of all the side dishes the Jacketed Baked Potato was the most impressive. That thing was Loaded! With such a pleasant ambiance, excellent service, and delicious tasting steaks at such a reasonable cost, you can't help but fall in love with this place! Having traveled back to Reno to play in the snow I was looking forward to a "jacketed baked potato" again. Having been here prior I knew what the service and facilities were like so my expectations were level set. However there were some major differences this time. The servers were very friendly and attentive. The five gals at the hostess podium not so much. That being said, I saw the hostesses for maybe five minutes so they are pretty inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. However the food quality was pretty bad. I ordered the 20 oz garlic peppercorn ribeye. Which from outside appearances looked ok. Once I took a knife to the steak everything changed. I ordered my ribeye medium rare and it showed up rare. However I powered on. Once completed dissecting my steak and eating the actual beef all that was left was undercooked fat which amounted to about 1/3 to 1/3 of the steak (see before and after photos). My son had a similar issue with his prime rib. He had a piece of fat that was the size of a tennis ball. I realize times are tough with inflation but serving substandard ( cheaper) cuts of meat really is not a smart move when you are a "steakhouse". read more

Four stars, no pretensions. I've visited this spot several times (Costco sells a $100 gift card for $80) and as long as you're aware that it's basically a Reno-themed Outback (country music and lots of cowboy boots on display) you'll be fine. The apps are okay - the Blooming Onion (they call it a "Browning Onion") is crisp and appropriately salty, the wings are good enough, but I really didn't care for their highly acclaimed avocado rolls. (Maybe it was an off-night for them, who knows?) Salads are fresh, French Onion soup - while not traditional - still delivers on that promise of cheesy gooey goodness, and the other night I had a really good 50% ground beef, 50% ground porkbelly burger (the "Cowboy") that hit all the right notes if you're a bacon lover like me. And then most importantly, we come to the steaks. They're fine as long as you're not expecting Prime or even a Choice-level of marbling. You'll get a cooked to order steak with a good sear at a reasonable price. It'll be chewy due to the low level of fat, but they're not tough, and that's okay with me when I'm downing one of their 32oz well margaritas ($6.75 during Happy Hour). So, if you have read my reviews before than you know that if I go to a new place, I will look through pictures from other Yelpers to see what to order. I saw numerous pictures of steaks cooked rare/medium rare, just the way a steak should be cooked! So why when we all ordered our steaks medium rare that they all came more medium well? It's a steakhouse, how can you get it wrong!? I should have done what I have always done, order it rare and get it medium rare. That would be my biggest 'beef' (pun intended) with this place! Besides that, the steaks were seasoned well, sides were delicious and the portions were great; I will go back and give them a second chance to redeem themselves. This place is located across from Peppermill; it's almost like Logan's or Texas Roadhouse. You have your cowboy décor and your peanut shells on the ground kind of place. However, I give it 4 stars because not being a big meat eater, I never know where to turn for good meat. The steak was truly melt in your mouth. My family and I are visiting from Las Vegas and staying a the Peppermill Hotel right across the street. We heard great reviews about this diner and wanted to eat here for a special occasion. I've tried calling in for a reservation as we are a party of 8+ and tried calling when they opened at 4pm. No answer and straight to voicemail. I understand, and things happen and businesses get busy so I decided to call a few times again an 4:45pm. I called twice and the line rang two times and the other end answered and hung up. I wanted to see what the situation was so I walked across the street to see 4 hosts standing there with their arms crossed chit chatting and swearing. I informed them I wanted to put a reservation but they responded with "not sure if we can seat another 8 person party". Waited around and informed us they could seat us but are putting us in the back. While waiting one of the hosts kept saying "bitch this" and "bitch that" very unprofessional. I get it this may be an entry level job for teenagers but that's no excuse. Very taken aback from service here in Reno. I tried to call to cancel our reservation after consulting my family informing them of the situation, as we were scared of how the service would be just from that initial encounter with the hosts, but again to my surprise no answer! This place has so much going for it. Prime location, great ambience, wonderful staff. But the food is getting more appalling every time I go and I finally have to say something. A friend of mine and I come once a month or so. She most often gets the broiled salmon which is a good-sized portion, cooked well and a good value. I've had their burger which, if you can get the cook to cheat it to medium-rare, is very good, too. But I've ordered the prime rib and it comes out on a screaming hot plate that overcooks the underside and makes it extremely tough. We ordered ribeyes medium rare, but how could they be medium rare when they are literally half an inch thick? I ordered the jacketed baked potato, which comes out battered and deep-fried, and tasted like it was left over from the weekend. The first time I was here, everything was great..... a month later............ first off, the server was great..... however, I ordered a French onion soup with my meal and when it came out (see photo), I noticed that there was a baby cockroach baked on top of the cheese. I notified the server about this, and he apologized and said that he would speak to the manager about it.......There's that part.... Instead of the manager having the common decency to come out and speak with me, they sent the server back to give me a discount on the meal with the side of baked cockroach on top of French onion soup..... NORMALLY, EVERY MANAGER comes out and speaks when there is a problem, but not this manager, they decided to send the server back out to address the table...... This was not a "discount," matter giving a discount was a complete insult when it comes to sanitation....... However, I assume that my table's experience receiving a meal with a baby cockroach in it wasn't important enough (worthy), to have the manager come out...... Honestly it's highly disrespectful on many levels to conduct yourself in such an unprofessional manner, then to send the wait staff back out to address the table instead is very cowardly.... Now, I'm not sure (since I was only black table in view), that may have played a part of not being addressed by the manager, but I imagine that if someone from the health department was dining at my table, the manager would've rushed out and gave the whole "I don't know how this happened?" Yadda yadda yadda speech....... Anyway, I paid the server, and made sure the party left a tip.
