**This review is specifically for Overstory Rooftop Brunch**…read more Made a solo reservation on a Sunday to have brunch before seeing a show. The good parts didn't outweigh the not-so-good for me. 1. Located on the 9th floor of The Westin, BUT, parking is mad affordable, which is a big relief as usually hotel rooftops have a static valet parking fee for $25 or more. There is a garage right in front of the entrance and its 5 bucks for up to 4 hours. 2. Views - decent enough for the 9th floor, but mostly overlooks trees and some highways. There isn't much to actually look at as far as a skyline. I was here in the daytime though, maybe at night with whatever city lights coming in, it may be a lil more charming. 3. Ambience - the inside was really nice, the tables were big and seating was comfy, a combo of cushioned chairs and velvety booths or couches. nice decor, and the outside portion of the rooftop also seemed very spacious, with a big main area as well as seating & a few more tables down the side of the building. I went during the yacht rock brunch period, so there was a live DJ spinning old hits from the 70s/80s. the music was at a cool volume, not so loud that you can't hear anyone speak, but not too low like background music - loud enough that you feel like its okay to vibe out. 4. Food & Service - this is where it fell apart for me. when i was seated, it took about 15-20 minutes for my waitress to come and ask me what i wanted to drink. when she finally did, i realized this same woman had walked past me several times before, on the way to do nothing in particular. she didn't introduce herself but was polite. she brought out my coffee and took my order, it took an hour for my food to come out. and the place wasn't crowded. only 2 couples sitting outside and about 40% capacity ithe indoor section where I was. and the food was subpar. it all came out hot, BUT. chicken sausage was hard to bite because casing was burnt and tough. eggs were cooked with so much butter it just tasted like i was eating fluffy butter. biscuit was dry and couldn't possibly be homemade. 'parmesan potatoes' had a few sad dried dots of cheese and parsley but no seasoning whatsoever. i forced myself to eat about half. I live far from Duluth, so really no reason to come back. Maybe a nighttime hang with drinks only, on the outdoor terrace would be a slightly better experience. But I don't have to find out.

I was really looking forward to trying the oysters, but I didn't realize their menu changes often so unfortunately, no oysters this time. A little sad about that! We decided to order pretty much everything off the à la carte menu. Overall, the food was just okay to me. The Brussels sprouts were the hardest to eat they were basically raw, just thinly sliced with sauce poured over. It would've been much better if they were at least steamed or grilled a bit. The mushrooms, though, were absolutely BOMB! If I didn't know what it was, I would've thought it was some sort of meat dish super soft, flavorful, and delicious. Definitely the highlight of the meal. The Wagyu, on the other hand, was a big disappointment. For the price, it was tough and chewy when it should've been buttery and melt-in-your-mouth tender. Overall, the place is cute and the vibes are nice, but the food was overpriced for what it was. I'd only come back for those mushrooms they were that good.

I placed an order for everything on the carte menu. Food was fun and a few of the dishes caught me off guard, in a good way. Pros. We loveeed the maitake mushrooms. This dish was one dish my friend and I had low expectations for. Ironically it's the only dish we would go back for! The bucatini I also had low expectations for. I hardly order pasta, from non pasta specialty places, because the pasta is 99% of the time going to be overcooked. BUT this bucatini was cooked perfectly al dente. The sauce was rich but not too heavy and just enough to cover the noodles without drowning. The crab taste was pretty faint. If it weren't listed on the menu I wouldn't even think it were in the dish. Cons. The brussel sprout salad was honestly almost inedible. It is a raw shaved brussel sprout salad, dressed as a Caesar salad. Although not bad tasting, the core of the sprouts was not tender but dry and hard. There was also a lot of it. Most disappointing was the "waygu ribeye". The quality was pretty horrible. The piece we got had silver skin as well as chunks of fat. I wish I got a picture of the leftover fat from the steak but if you look at my picture you can clearly see slices of just fat. I love a little fat on a well cooked ribeye and do not mind paying for it. But paying $50 for a probably 8oz "waygu" ribeye with only half of it palatable is wild. Regardless, I'm actually going back in a couple of days with my husband because of those amazing mushrooms.. though as I am writing this review I'm debating on canceling my reservation, ordering the mushrooms to go, and just going elsewhere. lol

Unfortunately, that excitement disappeared pretty quickly. We waited approximately 10 minutes without being acknowledged. A woman standing behind us who had arrived after we did was approached by the bartender and had her order taken first. I'm not going to speculate about the reason, but sitting there and watching it happen certainly didn't make us feel welcome. At that point I decided not to order anything because I already had doubts about staying. My wife ordered a glass of white wine that was supposed to be a 6 oz pour. When it arrived, we both questioned the amount. I even noticed other glasses of wine at a nearby table that appeared to have considerably larger pours. I've included a photo so people can judge for themselves. We weren't looking for special treatment because it was our anniversary. We simply expected the same basic level of acknowledgement and service as everyone else. It's unfortunate because we came in genuinely excited to try a local place and celebrate together. The atmosphere has potential, but our first impression of the service made us feel like we'd be better off spending our anniversary somewhere else.

My wife ordered the catfish but didn't care for it because the seasoning was extremely salty. She only ate a small portion of it, and when the manager came over, he felt it was necessary to tell her, "You didn't taste the fish." Honestly, I bit my tongue because who are you to tell someone whether they liked something or not? She tasted the fish and it simply wasn't to her liking. As a manager, I don't think arguing with a customer about their personal taste was necessary. Instead, it would have been better to simply acknowledge her feedback and move on. You can't tell someone that they enjoyed something when they're telling you they didn't. Overall, the atmosphere and drinks were good, but the experience with the manager definitely left a bad impression.

The décor has a La Catrina/Día de los Muertos feel, and the bar is gorgeous, with colorful liquor bottles, skulls, and plenty of eye-catching details. The upbeat music added to the atmosphere, although at one point it briefly sounded like we were at Mass, and I almost started doing the sign of the cross! For drinks, the Marinero was good. The watermelon margarita was okay, but unfortunately, it really didn't taste much like watermelon. We started with the fresh guacamole, which was disappointing. It was pretty lackluster and needed seasoning. When I order fresh guacamole, I'm looking for that classic table-made style with chunks of avocado, cilantro, onion, fresh lime, and plenty of flavor. This just didn't have it. The chicken quesadilla with peppers and onions was good overall, although the chicken was a little dry. The rice was actually very good--fluffy and not dry at all. The charro beans, however, needed some help. They lacked seasoning and that wonderful smoky flavor I expect from good charro beans. Some flavorful chorizo would have taken them to another level. The sopa de pollo had a good base flavor, but some jalapeños would have given it the kick it needed. The complimentary chips and salsa were okay, but again, the salsa needed more spice and personality. That really sums up my experience: the restaurant looks more flavorful than the food tastes. The atmosphere is beautiful, the bar is impressive, and the restaurant has so much potential, but the kitchen needs to bring the same energy. Give me more garlic, cilantro, lime, sazón, spice, smokiness, and bold Mexican flavors. Get rid of the bland! Overall: C+ Beautiful restaurant and great atmosphere, but the food needs more seasoning and flavor to match the gorgeous surroundings.
