My wife and I came to The Rooftop excited to celebrate our 17th wedding anniversary. We walked in all smiles, found two open seats at the bar, and sat down. Unfortunately, that excitement disappeared pretty quickly. We waited approximately 10 minutes without being acknowledged. A woman standing behind us who had arrived after we did was approached by the bartender and had her order taken first. I'm not going to speculate about the reason, but sitting there and watching it happen certainly didn't make us feel welcome. At that point I decided not to order anything because I already had doubts about staying. My wife ordered a glass of white wine that was supposed to be a 6 oz pour. When it arrived, we both questioned the amount. I even noticed other glasses of wine at a nearby table that appeared to have considerably larger pours. I've included a photo so people can judge for themselves. We weren't looking for special treatment because it was our anniversary. We simply expected the same basic level of acknowledgement and service as everyone else. It's unfortunate because we came in genuinely excited to try a local place and celebrate together. The atmosphere has potential, but our first impression of the service made us feel like we'd be better off spending our anniversary somewhere else. read more

George Clarke There really is something special about being on a rooftop on a perfect summer evening, and it's great to have it right in downtown Sugar Hill. I would like to say I planned the perfect date, but as some of the best things in life, this was just an impromptu visit to cap off an already great evening. Outside of being on the rooftop, the bar itself is upscale yet approachable, service was fast and friendly. Being a bit of a self engrandized home bartender I'm a bit critical when out of my home lab, but their Smoked Old Fashioned wasn't bad. ("Wasn't bad" really means very good.") While I don't love the prices and hate paying a cover charge, when you throw in live music, a great vibe, and a view, I can't really complain. The owner made an announcement that whoever tipped the band $10 would get a free drink, and since most drinks were over $15 I thought that was cool on many levels. We stepped in not sure what to do as no one greeted us, they were not very busy and the bartender looked to be having a conversation with someone at the bar. We walked around and finally ran into a waitress who told us to sit anywhere we wished inside or outside. The only area festive was inside a closed igloo and no heaters were on outdoors which was just a tad too cool for me despite the super nice weather that day. It would have been so to sit outside but without the warmth of the heaters we headed inside. We placed our order and explained we were just there for a pre-dinner drink and wanted to check out the venue so we didn't leave our tab open but we were quickly served the fabulous taking drinks on their menu(s). The Old Fashioned was on the regular menu and the Russian was on their seasonal tabletop menu. Server was very nice and took photos for some ladies we met. The only reason I can't give them a 5 star is they claim they are big on hospitality but yet we were not acknowledged upon arrival. Many restaurants and even some retail stores have a way to ensure they say hello/welcome immediately when you enter and without a hostess - the mindset should be that the bar or wait staff have a way to immediately say hello or welcome so those who have never been feel welcomed as well as those who frequently come. It would be nice to have a more festive decor for the holidays but that didn't affect my review; just a statement to say that the entire Sugar Hill area was pumping and themed with the holiday spirit then we walked in the only area decorated was not even accessible nor was it offered as an option to enjoy. read more

Service was good. Drinks are a little pricey but that's typical for a rooftop establishment. There is a $5 cover charge starting at 7pm because of the band (just ok). They had the football game playing on 2 TVs before that so there was the typical hooting, hollering & yelling going on if that's not your thing. There is no food served but shine pizza will deliver up there or you can bring food up. They have 2 unisex bathrooms up there although they need a way to know when they are occupied vs pushing on them trying to find oucan take the elevator downstairs for more bathrooms. It did get pretty crowded & loud later in the evening. read more

Came up here to grab a drink while we were waiting for a table across the street and this is a real nice spot to go in Sugar Hill. Live band was playing, so there was a five dollar cover charge, but this is an upscale bar quite crowded, the people are well dressed, the drinks are phenomenal, including their smoked old-fashioned, fire pit, lounging, nice place to go chill. Only had chance to stay for one drink, but enjoyed the view and the atmosphere and will certainly come back. Great service, friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommend. read more

We dropped in on Friday night and it took a few minutes to get a server to acknowledge us. Once we got noticed the server was great!!! McKenzie did an amazing job!!! This place would have got a better rating but they charge $2 for tap water in a drink. On the bill, my wife had a vodka water and it showed up as vodka $10 and water $2. WTF????? the staff said it's tap water because the drink tasted different due to it being sugar hill city water. Charging $2 for tap water should be criminal!!! Just my opinion. There are several other bars in the area that don't charge for tap water. Sugar hill Distillery is just one of a few. Watch your orders at this place they're dishonest!! Update: the establishment asked for a copy of the receipt so I am providing one. It's not about the $2 it's the principal. In my opinion the "nickel and Dime" concept is not good when you get negative attention. $2 for water SMH! How many other customers have been charged for water? With some of the reviews I've read there seems to be a pattern of inappropriate business practices. I experienced just one. The owner can reply all he wants about how sorry they are but until they fix the shady practices they'll end up loosing every time. Prove me wrong Roof Top!! read more

The coconut margarita doesn't taste like coconut or margarita. Had to send two different cocktails back because they were undrinkable. The owner is unhinged. He is rude and unprofessional. He also has a major drinking problem. He calls the "Marshall" after HE displays bad behavior. It's evident he has no recollection of the night I am referring to because he was so intoxicated. Edit: as you can see, based on his responses to negative reviews...he lacks accountability, has an arrogant demeanor, and is completely clueless and disrespectful. He needs therapy and a wake up call. The proof is that "it cannot be everyone else" - there are SO many ridiculous (almost laughable and unbelievable) stories here and on google of the owners VERY poor behavior and his arrogant responses to negative comments are further proof that this guy is unhinged. He needs to step back and go to a rehab center. Edit 2 as the owner responded [AGAIN]: I was pregnant AND sober during my visit. So your stereotypical response shows another of your issues. The Rooftop is ALWAYS fun with live music and great cocktails. It's nice to go to a fun rooftop without going to Atlanta. It's a must visit in Buford area! I tried out the Rooftop a few weeks ago for after-dinner drinks. I was excited that a place like this was open in the burbs, but sadly I don't think we'll be back. The drinks: 2.5 to 3 stars. They were pretty tasty, but the menu didn't seem like they had anything I couldn't make at home. The drinks are overpriced for what they are. You could pay the same amount for a cocktail at other restaurants, in Atlanta, and get something unique instead. Really I think you're paying for the views, which is fine just know what you're getting into. The service: 1 star. We came in and noticed that there were servers, but it wasn't like anyone greeted us and showed us to a table. That's fine, this is a bar. So we go to the bar to order. It takes a minute (totally fine, the bartenders are busy). One bartender took our order, then came back to tell us another girl was making our drinks. This girl did not speak a single word to us, or even look us in the eye. She put our drinks in front of us, turned around, and left. We didn't get asked if we wanted to close out, she didn't say "here you go", nothing. Normally I wouldn't want to comment on behavior like this - someone could be having a bad day. However, after she threw our drinks at us, she turned around... and continued talking and joking happily with the rest of the bartenders. We did not feel welcomed and for the price we will not be returning. read more

It was never my intention to charge you for water. We NEVER charge for water! Even when we talked, you had asked if we had bottled water and I replied with no it's just city water from our taps. After that I immediately asked to switch it out for a new drink and voided the second vodka water for the toasty marshmallow. When I special requested the water there is a charge button next to it and must have accidentally hit 2 and just didn't even notice. Honestly this is a mistake and we will make it right. read more

If you're looking for a nice (childfree) bar to go to with a chill vibe, beautiful views, friendly staff, and good drinks, this is the place. My husband and I LOVE this bar. We are thrilled that Sugar Hill has this perfect spot for a bar with a view. The view is of the cute little cityscape that is Sugar Hill - a small, but very active town with concerts, activities, and restaurants. This rooftop bar is the perfect spot to enjoy the concerts from a distance, as well as the music the bar itself provides nightly. The setting is somewhat upper class, yet very welcoming and comfortable. You are alowed to bring in your own food to enjoy with their beverages, and they have a fantastic selection of coctails, wine, and beers. The service is excellent, their servers seem happy too. Also, the owners (husband and wife) are always there, walking around, greeting their customers. I highly recommend you give this place a try. read more
