My waitress I believe her name is Penelope was phenomenal and she recommended the snapper with jollof rice. It was my first time trying it. And I was not ashamed to clean my plate I wish I knew they did not accept cash because that was embarrassing And I wish I saved room for desert Also the tip is included with the check which is fine by me she earned it! **This review is specifically for Overstory Rooftop Brunch** Made a solo reservation on a Sunday to have brunch before seeing a show. The good parts didn't outweigh the not-so-good for me. 1. Located on the 9th floor of The Westin, BUT, parking is mad affordable, which is a big relief as usually hotel rooftops have a static valet parking fee for $25 or more. There is a garage right in front of the entrance and its 5 bucks for up to 4 hours. 2. Views - decent enough for the 9th floor, but mostly overlooks trees and some highways. There isn't much to actually look at as far as a skyline. I was here in the daytime though, maybe at night with whatever city lights coming in, it may be a lil more charming. 3. Ambience - the inside was really nice, the tables were big and seating was comfy, a combo of cushioned chairs and velvety booths or couches. nice decor, and the outside portion of the rooftop also seemed very spacious, with a big main area as well as seating & a few more tables down the side of the building. I went during the yacht rock brunch period, so there was a live DJ spinning old hits from the 70s/80s. the music was at a cool volume, not so loud that you can't hear anyone speak, but not too low like background music - loud enough that you feel like its okay to vibe out. 4. Food & Service - this is where it fell apart for me. when i was seated, it took about 15-20 minutes for my waitress to come and ask me what i wanted to drink. when she finally did, i realized this same woman had walked past me several times before, on the way to do nothing in particular. she didn't introduce herself but was polite. she brought out my coffee and took my order, it took an hour for my food to come out. and the place wasn't crowded. only 2 couples sitting outside and about 40% capacity ithe indoor section where I was. and the food was subpar. it all came out hot, BUT. chicken sausage was hard to bite because casing was burnt and tough. eggs were cooked with so much butter it just tasted like i was eating fluffy butter. biscuit was dry and couldn't possibly be homemade. 'parmesan potatoes' had a few sad dried dots of cheese and parsley but no seasoning whatsoever. i forced myself to eat about half. I live far from Duluth, so really no reason to come back. Maybe a nighttime hang with drinks only, on the outdoor terrace would be a slightly better experience. But I don't have to find out. read more

Initially, I was a bit nervous because it took some time to receive a response regarding our reservation, but once everything was confirmed, I felt much better. I wanted to celebrate close to home, and I'm grateful for the friends who joined me to make the evening special. I wasn't looking for a club vibe or anything over the top--just good food, good service, and quality time with friends. The valet staff was amazing and set a great first impression. Once inside, however, finding the restaurant proved to be more challenging than expected. We were simply told to "take the elevator to the top," which had us wondering, "Where's the elevator?" It was difficult to find someone who could clearly direct us. The ambiance was nice, and the cocktails were very good. The food presentation was appealing, and while I can't think of anything particularly bad, I also can't say there was anything that truly stood out as exceptional. Service was slightly inconsistent, from the host stand to table service. It could have been due to the modified reservation time or where our party was seated, but the experience didn't quite match the scenery shown in the photos. Our table was tucked into a tighter section by the glass wall, and instead of enjoying the expected views, we were looking at the parking deck. That may have affected the overall atmosphere and why it didn't deliver the "wow" factor I had anticipated. Overall, I think Overstory is better suited for an intimate date night, a one-on-one catch-up with a girlfriend, or perhaps guests staying at the hotel. I also ordered a glass of Conundrum wine, but what was brought to the table did not appear to be Conundrum at all. Instead, I was served a bitter drink over ice. Since Conundrum is a wine, I was confused by what I received and never got a clear explanation. That experience, combined with the food, left me disappointed overall. When the service is this absurd I can see why the reviews are so poor. The hostess was incredibly rude and unhelpful, repeatedly telling us that the outside is reserved and reservation only. We talked to three people and had zero resolve. Decided to walk outside to see the rooftop before calling it quits, we walked out and it was completely empty! Not close to closing time either. Very bizarre experience, rather spend my money elsewhere than for bad service and a view of Duluth. The food was alright, I feel like it was not that great of flavor to the Taiwanese style chicken wing. My friends got the burger and steak sandwich that was alright too. The chocolate mousse was good, the flavor was light with dark chocolate and not very sweet at all. I think the chocolate mousse was the best thing there. The drinks were not good. I was not a fan of the service at the bar. My friend had given me her card to pay for her and the bartender had demanded a tip. I was surprised with that because I've never had a bartender demand a tip and then change the their attitude on how they are servicing base off that. It was not a pleasant experience. I felt like it was not that professional. The other bartenders were nice and made better drinks plus they had a better professional attitude. The vibes there are cute and nice overall. Where do i even start? lol We celebrated a gf's bday & brought her a cake that costed $35 to HOLD it in the back. The wait and service was HORRIBLE; waited over 30mins for a MOCKTAIL and even longer for some wings. Kind server but lord was she slow, we'd have to ask for everything we needed at once or we'd have to wait another 30mins for a simple thing. This isn't a place to come enjoy a meal nor even a drink, wine was $25. Pricey but it could've at least tasted good. My sister got the Mexican street salad and it tasted dry as hell, it's more of a bowl tha salad, there wasnt anything that made it a SALAD lol. We were there around 11pm and the lights kept getting brighter for us to leave but checks weren't even brought out yet. The bill restriction is 3 checks to a table. The menu must change frequently because the pictures I saw online were not on the menu. I tried the Amazonian salad with added chicken. The char of the chicken and the fruit added to the well dressed salad tasted great. Portions are small but the healthy veggie options were a salad and a curry. Which meant I ordered a salad, 2 drinks, and then ate later. The drinks were good, I tried the becky and the tumeric margarita. The Becky was my favorite with vodka and lavender. The place is beautiful. Parking is pretty easy, $5 for endless parking in the deck. $15 for valet parking for 2 hours. After two hours the price keeps increasing. I would say this place is for drinks and small bites. You are high up but the view is the beautiful rooftop you are on. The landscape isn't a skyline or cascading trees. It's mostly a parking lot but the lighting, the roof and the breeze are nice. I wouldn't say this place was family friendly. It's for an adult crowd. When we arrived there was valet out front and we love that when we all know how parking goes. We had reservations so when we arrived we were swept away to a comfortable booth. We visited on a Thursday and we nearly had the place to ourselves! We were near the bar and our waitress for the evening was lovely. The rooftop restaurant features panoramic views, with beautiful furniture, lighting & decor. Unfortunately it was raining the day that we went, so we didn't get to experience the terrace. However, it looked amazing from the windows so I can imagine. We ordered beef tostadas, Ceasar salad with shrimp, and ceviche with mussels. Everything was well seasoned and delicious. I wasn't in the mood for alcohol so I ordered a tropical mocktail. My wife ordered the old fashioned and she enjoyed it. What a fabulous place! My girlfriends and I wanted to enjoy a night out and opted for Overstory after my bestie heard raving reviews. None of us live in (or near!) Duluth but we thought it worth the trip. Spoiler Alert: It totally was. When we arrived there was valet out front and we love that when we all know how parking goes. We had reservations so when we arrived we were swept away to a table near the terrace. We visited on a Friday before it got too late and the place was buzzing! We were seated steps away from the terrace at a fantastic table and our waitress for the evening was phenomenal. We all started off with cocktails and I went with the Conquistador which is Pisco, passion fruit, and ancho pepper lime. FIRE. For appetizers we opted for the empanadas, the tostada and the yuca. They were alllll delicious! Especially the tostadas. It took a bit to get the cocktails (we got our apps first), but it was super busy and we were chatting through it anyways, lol. For dinner I went with the fried snapper over plantain mash and it did not disappoint. It didn't blow me away like crazyyy (I could have used more *kick*) - but believe me, it was yummy. Seriously a delicious experience from cocktails to entrees. I think the only part of the experience that surprised me here was that they said we couldn't take food outside or order from there. But when we went on the terrace, we saw menus on the tables and empty plates. Confusing. It didn't feel like they were lying to us, I just didn't understand how they let other folks slip outside with their plates lol. We did take our cocktails outside and it was the perfect vibe. I've been having Overstory saved to my places to check out since it opened up & have tried to make reservations before but it has always been booked out. When deciding what to do for my birthday this was the first place that came to mind & there was availability! The rooftop restaurant is beautiful, panoramic view, with beautiful furniture, lighting & decor. We had dinner inside then lounged outside by the water the rest of the evening. It was four of us, I had the fried red snapper which was okay, both my sisters got the Asado which they enjoyed. My mom ordered a short rib meal that was more like pulled beef. Two of us had the Jollof rice with our meal and we both agreed it lacked flavor. Two of them ordered a drink called the Roselle which they both thought was really good. My family ordered a cheesecake for me but it unfortunately never came after waiting for more than 15 mins. Our reservation was at 7pm & our waiter informed us around 7:50 pm that she was going to close out our tab because she had a phone call with her insurance company at 8pm so I'm not sure if her having to leave the floor had anything to do with the cheesecake never coming out. We finally just gave up on waiting and went outside to take pictures and enjoy the rooftop outside space. The restaurant space is beautiful and the inside/outside setting is a really nice place to enjoy without having to go into the city but the food needs some improvement. I kept on hearing about this rooftop bar and finally had a chance to visit it. It's on top of the Westin Hotel near Gas South Arena. You can either park in Parking Deck 2 or 4 to go there. Parking is not validated, just an FYI. Get into the elevators and go to Floor 9. It's not labeled, but the cleaners there told me. When you go in, it's a beautiful restaurant. I happened to choose the Jazz Brunch which are held on Sundays. I was really hoping to get good pictures of the outside view, but unfortunately, it was too windy and cold that afternoon. Service seems short staff for the amount of guests. Prepare to wait long. Best if you order your drinks and foods at the same time. I had the short ribs. It was just okay. I like that it was a big proportion though. I would go back for the night ambiance with girlfriends, but is it worth going? Not really. read more

We ordered 4 appetizers to share for a meal between 3 people before going to a concert next door. An hour later 2 appetizers appeared, neither one being one of the 4 we ordered. We were told the waiter mixed up our order and we would need to completely start a new order, which didn't give us time to get the food and still make it to our concert. It was such a drive for me but would I do it again. Yes! The setting was so chill, upscale and quiet. No loud music. You could really enjoy your environment with whom you are with. We were able to get added to the waitlist and get a table without reservations, but with good weather, this place will be busier--so I suggest reservations. Overstory is located on the 9th floor of the Westin Hotel. There're parking decks directly across from the hotel with $5 parking. Indoor and outdoor options available for seating. The ambiance is nice. Very elegant and cozy, both inside and outside. I enjoyed a salad with shrimp and a tequila expresso martini. My friends enjoyed the margaritas and the tostadas and empanadas. Was taken here for a date night during the week on a Thursday. There is valet parking and a parking deck right across that makes for an easy walk upstairs to the rooftop. On first glance, the lighting is gorgeous and outside area with the fire pits is a true vibe! Outside of that, the actual decor is okay. We were immediately seated in a booth out looking the inside area which was great. Our server, although helpful took over 20/25 minutes to come and actually greet us. This was a problem mostly because it was very low traffic when we arrived, maybe 9/10 guests in the entire area indoor and outdoor. Nonetheless, she was very nice and happy to help us get an order in. The drinks we got were great and the small plates we tried were fun twists on classic dishes. Only problem, is it took so long for our server to get back and check on us (40+ minutes). After waving for her, we tried to order more food (our main entree's) and we were informed the kitchen just closed. Now why wouldn't the server come and give a heads up or check and see if we needed anything? Especially since there is no note on menu of kitchen closure times or other way to know + again, it was extremely slow/quiet. Irregardless of the lack luster service, the drinks were strong and delicious. I maybe would come back to get direct bar service but I think some improvements to service would do wonders to justify the price/ambiance. Drinks: 1. That said, the food experience was a little disappointing. Out of the five items listed on the menu, of course the one I actually wanted, the snapper, they were "out of". Which I still don't fully understand. How are you out of something when the menu is already so limited? Same situation with the mocktails. Only three options listed, and the one my partner wanted wasn't available either. It just didn't make sense, especially at a place that presents itself as a high end establishment. chef Ramsey would be disappointed. As far as the food we did have, I ended up with the asada and honestly, it was pretty tasty. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5. My partner had the wagyu burger, and it was just a burger. No standout sauces or seasoning. Definitely not wagyu level wow. We probably rate it a 3 out of 5. Service was okay. Nothing memorable. We had noted that we were celebrating an anniversary when we booked, but it wasn't acknowledged at all. Not sure if that was missed or if they just don't do anything special. The decor, the views, everything about the hotel screams elegance. So anyone that loves to take pics for the gram would have a field day in here! You have the option of sitting indoors where they have televisions and you can catch the playoffs. They also have outdoor seating which, if the weather permits, I would recommend. The service was great, the hostess had me at a table in a very unfavorable spot when I got there. I asked to be reseated and she made something happen for me so I'm grateful for that. Despite only being there for a few months my server Sonica was very knowledgeable, she made great suggestions for food and it was an overall pleasant experience. She even gave me a card for my birthday! (Even though a slice of cake was what I wanted lol). Now for the food, I'll be honest the meal was underwhelming. I'm not sure if it is because I had higher expectations or because it was actually mediocre. For the record I'm in no way saying that the food was bad, just wasn't as good as I hoped. I had the pabellon empanadas as an app, this was the best thing I had came with an amazing dipping sauce. I had been wanting to go here for a little, as it was just opened 4 months ago. I will say it is such a vibe. The food and ambience were great, but the service was terrible. It is located at the top of the Westin Hotel, which is where we stayed a night at. I loved the hotel, it's so new you can tell, it is beautiful! Back to the Rooftop, so there was a leak next to our seats and the staff just acted as if we didn't exist even though we had reservations. We ended up grabbing the manager and he assisted us. We sat for 20 min before that even happened. Once we got food and drinks, which came fast, our server disappeared so we had to grab the manager again. So I am giving this place some grace because they are brand new. I do think anything new in Duluth sorta needs an adjustment period. The actual Hotel and the restaurant is so pretty and aesthetic. If you want a view then uhhh maybe go to the city because you're just gonna get a view of parking lots and main roads but the ambiance of the actual restaurant is a nice little escape. Our service was decent. Our waitress wasn't particularly outstanding but she did check on us. The general manager would pay us a visit and really took feedback really well. I got the "who invited becky" cocktail and it was refreshing and delicious ! The steak felt like the most worh it on the menu and it was really good. The only problem was, the food would get so cold so fast because the plate was not heated. So my only real complaint would be that. If you actually want an experience make a reservation. I enjoyed a rooftop happy hour recently with my girlfriends . Fell in love with the serenity of the location , it was in a secluded area with free parking. ! The food: it was ok. portion sizes were decent. It wasn't as savory as I expected. Temperature and timing of the service was great. Definitely A+ on customer service. We enjoyed our visit to Overstory! Thanks to my fellow Yelpers for providing context and tips! We knew to put in the Westin for specific directions, and we knew exactly where to park. Once upstairs, we were greeted by a very gracious host and immediately seated on the outdoor rooftop. We had a choice of either inside or outside. It's important to note that we did not have a reservation. I attempted to make one via Opentable and was unsuccessful. That being said, we definitely lucked out. Visiting on a weekday evening may have contributed. The ambiance is absolutely stunning! There's not another venue like it in the area. We enjoyed drinks (Who Invited Becky and Blue Moon) and food (burger, empanadas, and steak) while we watched the sun set and enjoyed the scenery. The food was good.
