I take my bike (which is a brand that Roy's doesn't sell) in once a year for a tune-up, and that inevitably involves replacing some worn-out parts as well. The people at Roy's really care about sending you home happy, even if you're not a Tour de France wannabe on a $12,000 bike. I'm a little torn how to rate my experience with Roy's. The first time I came here, I brought two of my kids electric e-bikes. I had all four tubes between the two bikes replaced and tuned. The customer service couldn't have gotten better. They talked to me about what they had in store, how to properly maintain the bikes, and what services they could provide me. A few months down the road, both tires and tubes needed to be replaced on one of the bikes. Of course I'm coming back to Roy's. Before I came back, I called the store to confirm they had the tubes and tires for our bike. It's a 12.75 inch tire and I know those aren't always stocked. The gentleman on the phone confirmed they had the tubes and 3 different tires to choose from. He made sure to physically check inventory as well. In my mind, we're good to go. He also said he could get the bike done within a couple of hours. Within 30 minutes of that phone call, I'm in the store dropping off the bike. This is where things got a little iffy. The gentleman who was so awesome before you could tell had a long day ahead of him. He was a little stressed. Nonetheless, he still helped me out. He told me it would take a few days to get done since they were busy. I figured this was a miscommunication between the two employees and thought nothing of it. A few hours after leaving the store I received a call stating they could no longer repair my bike. They said they didn't have the parts, couldn't order them, and I would need to pick up the bike. I was a little thrown back. I mentioned how I was told they had not 1 but 3 different tires to choose from and they physically checked that they had all the parts before I came to the store. He said the person I talked to was wrong and it was a 12.5 inch tire and not the 12 I needed. I corrected him saying it's not a 12 inch tire. I offered to bring the parts and have them install it. He said "at that point no." I understand they can't warranty another companies parts and I'm okay with that. But they didn't even explain or offer that. I would have paid more in labor just to get this done but it was clear that they didn't want to deal with an E-Bike. They are typically harder to work on than a tradition bike. I'm bummed. I thought I found my forever bike shop but if they can't stick to their word when I called ahead and checked inventory, then how could I trust them otherwise? If anyone has a recommendation for another bike shop, I'm all ears. Roy's isn't that place though. At least not for me. read more

I went to Roy's today to upgrade my cassette and tire repair, I had questions during the repair. John worked on my bike, he took the time to explain to me the needed repairs (rear brake pads) and the front pads were good for now, but we should keep a watch on them. I had more questions about my derailleur and chain maintenance, John took his time with me, answered my questions displayed patience as I am new to cycling, I just bought a used bike 4 months ago and started riding at 69 years old. I found their shop professional and courteous, Mike (owner) stepped in a few times to answer questions and explained his search on his computer for my needed parts. Visited Roy's Cyclery on Monday, June 17 around 3pm . When I walked in two gentleman were having an unrelated bike conversation. I walked the shop for 10-15min when what I believe was the non-employee motioned to the employee that I may need assistance. The employee rudely stated, "He doesn't have any questions." Clearly a sign of racial discrimination. Why wouldn't I have questions walking into a cycling shop to inquire about two E-bikes. Roy's has always been one of the shops I visited as a kid to get a quick inner tube, and service was always great even though I was only spending a few bucks. Well, yesterday I purchased an e-bike for my wife's Mother's Day gift and customer service was top notch! We were quickly greeted on the sales floor by Mike. I had done a tune-up at Roy Cyclery within the last week and came back to buy a water bottle and a cellphone holder. While I was there, Tanner noticed that my rear wheel was loose. Even though I was mid-ride and not there for a repair, he went out of his way to fix it right away. Since I had purchased the water bottle, he even gave me a cold water, which was a nice touch on a hot day. His excellent customer service really stood out! I did overhear an older lady speaking to customers and employees in a condescending way, which wasn't great. I came down from Sacramento to do the ride, but forgot to pack my cycling socks, and only had generic athletic socks on hand.
