This place has become our go-to restaurant when we just want to have an easy and fun night out. It's great food and beer and the wait staff is always super friendly and professional. For a table for 2, I don't think we've ever had to wait, but it's also always full enough to feel nice and sociable. The design is clearly considered but it just feels comfortable and sort of rustic. I love the Caesar salad (which I think is a 2 to 1 ratio of lettuce to Parmesan...) with steak, the steak burrito, the burger, and pretty much everything else I've tried. Thursday nights the wings are half off with a beer and I've had the house sauce and the Thai peanut and they were both great - although I'm a big fan of spicy food and always ask for the ridiculously hot habanero sauce that I have to dot on with the tines of my fork. I love the Hefeweizen beer (I think it's Saegerauhenweizen?) so have kept meaning to try the other ones but can never resist. Oh, and the lime custard tart is basically like a slightly creamier and fluffier key lime pie...so good!! read more

Last chance for Rough Cut, after a couple bad experiences at this place we tried again to eat there. It has new outside dining, seemed safer. When we got there the "host" told us there is no reserved seating, " it's just a free for all out there", and as far as ordering food he didn't recommend it. The wait was too long. The woman next to us said " your saying don't even order? Then he took it back. After all this time they are still restaurant amateurs. Charming brewpub my husband and I found on the way to our cabin getaway in the Catskills. It was relatively late and we were hungry. We seated ourselves in the back near the bar. Our waited appeared right away with menus. I'm normally a wine drinker but the selection they offered convinced me to try one. I'm so glad I did. I had the Oil Burner Black IPA and my husband had the Top Secret IPA. Both were excellent. My husband had a couple order of wings and I had the veggie patty. I really enjoyed the veggie patty - it was served crispy and warm on a toasted bun with avocado, lettuce, and tomato. I recommend it. My husband's wings were good but I think my veggie patty was better. With 6 rotating drafts you always have a different experience every week, try another one, try another two. Kane, is the master of brewing, my forte are Belgians and they are always on point. So, you're not a big fan of beer? Why should you come? Food, anything you order is GOOD. From a Caesar salad to a rib-eye steak. Rough Cut has a nice rustic atmosphere with lots of rough cut wood decorating pretty much everything. Right near the entrance it's hard to miss the big cozy fireplace and sofas in front of it, great places to enjoy a beer and warmth on cold days. The beer is pretty good too and there's a nice mix of style and some interesting experiments. The food is also good with mostly bar food though the wings and jalapeno poppers were all very nice. It's a great place to rest up after hiking the nearby preserve. read more

Really tasty beers, and even tastier food, this is a rustic little place located up on the mountain past Lake Minnewaska. We dropped in for the first time right before the Labor Day weekend, and they didn't have all their beers available, but what we had we enjoyed. It's basically a bar/restaurant in a really old house, and they've kept the decor vintage which only adds to the charm. Nice selection of sandwiches, soups, salads, and entrees, and everything we sampled was very good. Was expecting more. Yes the beer was great and that is no small accomplishment. The food was another story. Out of of the three dishes we tried two were close to inedible. The garlic brocoli was unexceptional steamed brocoli with a heap of garlic on top. What is that? The tequilla chicken wings were tough, fatty skin, luke warm. Yuk. The veggie burger was tasty but a mess to eat as there was no structure to it at all. The experience was still ok as servers were friendly and picnic tables were pleasant. Was this just an off night? Well here we are again, had the wings and the calamari great choices, the wings are in a great marinade sweet and hot. We went for sampler for brew choices - Nelson the Belgian IPA, Ryen the IPA, Sagerauhenweizen wheat beer, Bushels and Bales wheat ale , Holstein Stout, and Pomme d ' Orange all were great. Very disappointed! My sons chicken tenders were BLACK! The poor kid didn't complain. He just said they were good. When we looked at them, we noticed they were completely BURNT! I can't believe they served something like this and for the rest of them we just took the breading off and at one more and threw the rest out. They were so rubbery. The rest of the food was just ok, but we went out of our way to try this place because it was recommended and there were so many other places we could have gone. The beer was very very good. My husband and I weren't that hungry so we ordered a pretzel and nachos. The pretzel was like rubber. Obviously microwaved and maybe a few days old. Not at all worth the money. The nachos also tasted microwaved and stale. I hope they get it right with the food because the beer is outstanding. The interior is also lovely with a good ambiance. Nice rustic small local bar, food good, food service fast, unfortunatly bartender not all friendly, didnt greet us just stood in front of us with a blank stare, im not much of a beer drinker but my boyfriend is, beer was good, unfortunly bartender couldnt recommend much beside the hard cider which he wouldnt allow me to sample like most places so i ended up just asking for a water(which in my opinion, as a bartender or a server you would go above and beyond to make that sale since water is free you just made nothing off) otherwise i would try this place again, like i said the food was good, and wait staff very friendly. Not sure why the waiter at the outside bar was so cranky but it flows over into the whole energy of the place like the "slow to come meals" and misunderstood verbal of "I would like to have...", he couldnt get it right even after a review of our order! So it feels like they got rid of one bad (staff) apple and now have an outside grumpy that's just as burned out as the menu after a busy weekend. The thing about running a restaurant in the summer for city folks is: Keep your walk-in cooler stocked! And now the review of the food: Mac and cheese was too small and bland, burger excellent, american cheese (UGH) -offer an option please, arugala salad good, A&W root beer good, vegiburger good. Beers good to excellent. There's no options on any of the meals so don't even ask! If you bring a pet bring a blanket to throw down on the gravel/dirt, poor little things were trying their best to sit on the bench! Not impressed. Solid place...these guys just upped the ante for the Catskills...the bar room is a cool layout, the brew room could be in a beer museum. Great beer selection! We stopped here for dinner on a Saturday night, waited about 20 minutes for two seats at the bar. They have books and board games to keep you entertained while you wait. The waiter was super busy since the place was packed, but he was so attentive and friendly! Overall very disappointing!!!! You would think it being called a brewery they would have more than two beers on tap( 1 being there's a stout) both served kinda warm. They cook table by table our app took over a hour. Server doesn't come by to ask if u need anything. The huevos. Ranchero corn tortilla had something on in so spicy that it was inedible(and I like spicy food). Wife's hanger steak was cooked perfect but kinda of bland. Cousin ordered vegan chili which was just some seasoned beans. Being a chef I was amped up to have a brewery in my neck of the woods but definitely fell short of expectations. I understand it has only been open for a couple of weeks but they should have had there stuff together specially being a holiday weekend. Rough Cut Brewery is a breath of fresh air for the area and after dining there last night my husband and I will definitely be regulars! Fantastic beer and delicious "pub" food which is a step above. We started with the special, the cheese biscuits, which we hope will remain on the menu and then thoroughly enjoyed the oscar burger and fish tacos. The burger was flavorful, fresh and the ciabatta bun was a perfect match. The taco (platter) was a great portion with fluffy rice, beans and the works also fresh and flavorful. Of course the beer is a standout. We had the IPA and the nutty Ale. We are so thankful Rough Cut is now open and has an atmosphere that is inviting. It's exactly what Kerhonkson needs! read more

I went here a couple of weeks ago and was soooo pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious - I got mussels and they were probably some of the best I've ever had. This used to be Oscar's Restaurant, which has been closedown for quite sometime now. The owners, Jesse & Bart, teamed up with a craft beer connoisseur, Kayne, did a little remodeling and reopened as Rough Cut Brewing Co. They did a nice job with the interior, it still has its rustic, country charm. They moved the bar area into the back corner and are currently working on expanding to offer more dining room space and an outdoor patio. They always have six of their beers on tap and that menu rotates, check their website or Facebook page for current offerings. They also offer a nice menu consisting of a simple selection of appetizers, burgers and entrées, along with a kid's menu. This is the perfect place to go after a day of hiking at the nearby Lake Minnewaska State Park or Mohonk Preserve trails, or just because you're in the mood for some local craft beer. I had the Beer Battered Fish and Steak Fries, A+ on the tartar sauce.......Hey! it's the little things that make a big impact. My dining partner ordered A Grilled Shrimp/Crusted Goat Cheese Salad from the nightly specials menu. Service was quick and friendly and the atmosphere was very warm and neighborly. read more

What an amazing place--beautiful and cozy interior from the huge fireplace and library to the unique, sleek bar. The brews are fabulous, although I have only tried two and plan to go back. And the food was perfect. I started with the pretzels--crunchy and freshly baked right in the kitchen, then went on to calamari with an unusually delicious crust. The fish tacos are to remember forever. We also had the tofu sticks with hemp seed and celantro--great! And not to be missed is the vibe and the service. If you are in New Paltz and are looking for locally brewed beer you may head over to the Guilded Otter. Do yourself a favor, skip it and head straight for this place on the other side of the Gunks. The beer brewed here is excellent (I am a beer snob and a bar owner, so I don't throw that word around easily). The food is also very good. Surprisingly good fried calamari (nice spicy aioli on the side) and the steak burrito contained pieces of actual steak cooked correctly instead of cooked to death. The lamb burger was well prepared and the fries were nice and crispy. My wife loved the ambiance. It looks a lot better on the inside than the exterior (it's easy to assume on a drive by during the day that the place is still closed). Only negative was the key lime pie is not as good as Steve's in Brooklyn, but the homemade ice cream makes up for it. read more

I stopped here with my husband while staying in the area. We really enjoy going to breweries and trying local beers, especially when it means supporting a local buisness. The vibe when we entered was quiet but nice and as the night went on it got busy and more lively. One of the owners was our server and was very polite. My husband was promptly served his beer and my water was refilled whenever it got low. The beer, specifically the milk stout, was very good. Perfectly balanced and sweet. Our appitizer, the calamari was also served fairly quickly and was tasty. However, that is about where our good experience ended. We both ordered steaks and after a half hour plus we watched people that were seated after us receiving their meals. I believe our server who was an owner noticed our impatience and explained that my husbands steak was over cooked and they were re-firing it. By the time we got our food it was obvious either the ticket was never put in or my steak just sat while his was redone. The kale was yummy and so were the potatoes but the steaks really left something to be desired. The fat was not rendered off my husbands strip steak, and my ribeye was overcooked and bland despite the sauce. We also had to ask for steak knives because they forgot to give them to us, we were left with just butterknives. I ended up having more than half of my food put in a container to go because the letdown after I got it had left me fairly agitated and not hungry. I really wish I had better things to say about this place, I wanted to love it as much as I loved the beer but it was really a let down overall. read more
