Doesn't look like much when you walk past it. But after an aerial yoga class next door, my friend and I decided we wanted to grab a bite before going grocery shopping. After searching the area for good new spots, we saw roots that's literally 5 doorsteps down from the yoga studio. When you walk in you can feel the simplicity and charm of this place. The menu is simple and very similar to other restaurants offering Asian cuisine. The difference here is customer service and flavor. The lady taking out order was very pleasant and helpful. Helped us make a decision. I chose the Thai Coconut Bowl. Which was delicious, a hint of curry without overpowering the other ingredients. Very good balanced meal. My friend got the pork buns which he loved, and the drunken noodles. The pricey is just about right for the area the restaurant is in. What a cozy, little spot filled with delicious food and great lighting! I recommend coming for a romantic date night, family dinner or a small group of friends. My only complaint is no music. During the pandemic we go grocery shopping at Whole Foods which is in the same shopping center. Then we sometimes order lunch from Roots. I wish they put more vegetables in their Shrimp LoMein. Ordering and paying on a smartphone phone is very easy. As for the reviewer Leah B, who claims that the mmanagement is "shady", I find her "shady". She writes in her latest review dated 7/18/2020 that the place is "unhygenic". How is that possible when Roots has been takeout only since the pandemic began??? OMG. Yum. Stop whatever you're doing and go there now. Absolutely EVERY bite of food that was brought out to our table of 3 was A-MAZ-ING. Finally, a place where my girlfriend and I can get food we both enjoy! It's great because I crave Asian food quite often & she doesn't. So here they serve crepes which can keep her busy while I get my pick of Asian cuisine and chow down on the real stuff! Now, I've only been here once but I can tell you for sure I'll be back. I had the Beef Noodle Soup and it was good. Soup was good, meat was all there, veggies were classic bok choy, but the noodles (ehh...)! Was it pricey? Quite! But to be honest I think they did a good job picking the menu. I also saw scallion pancakes on the way which is a huge plus. Having Pad Thai, Ramen, Beef Noodle, and sushi is a killer combination... and they're open later than Pei Wei. Advice to management: Get some rice noodles! After reading one of the reviews... Not one, but ZERO stars for the mastery of an appalling service. No service at all would've been better than what we experienced today. We're Princeton localities, having lived in this beautiful city for approximately 15 years. Ever since Roots opened, we've been regular customers. Roots definitely has some quality dishes, prepared well. The only reason we kept going back was exclusively due to the food. Each subsequent visit, the service degraded. After our visit tonight, it was apparent that we would not be visiting again. First, the woman at the front desk does not understand customer service. Never have we seen her receive her guests with a smile. There's a well constructed, heartfelt message on the wall, but the restaurant embodies none of it. It almost feels like someone was hired to write that message. She behaves as if she's doing you a favor - trying to find a table. If you're a first time visitor, you'll have to wander around for a good ten minutes before you're addressed - if at all you're approached. There was a time when I had request for a table three times before we were seated - after 45 minutes. Oh - and she also doesn't understand that customers need to know how long they should be expected to wait prior to getting seated. You just have to take your chances when you walk into this "pan" Asian restaurant. Second, there's a sense of egoism in all waiters/waitresses. Ambiance makes a restaurant successful. All Roots has is edible food. If you do not care about how you're treated when you're enjoying a meal, then Roots is the place for you. Otherwise, Pru Thai in Pennington is FAR better. Go there! We found a very sharp object in our drunken noodles tonight to which both the lady at the front desk as well as the servers put on a great act of surprise and skepticism. One of the waiters claimed it was a piece of uncooked rice. The lady at the front desk, noticing the commotion, comes over and deems it as a "piece of wood which was left uncolored" who later continued to say that she didn't understand how it "got in there." If she doesn't know how it got in there - should it be my problem? I don't care what it was - if I'm ordering a dish, I expect there to be nothing but the contents of that dish. We did not receive a proper apology or resolution for the sharp object. I was simply disgusted. As I've said, the only reason we go back is because of the food. Today, that basic expectation was severely undermined. Guess we'll be going to Pru Thai from now onwards. Roots - thanks at least for a few years. It was a good run. read more

Nice decor, very fast, BYO, and decent food. Enough to want to come back again but not quite memorable. I got the vegetarian Thai Coconut with ramen and the wife got the shrimp pad Thai. My family decided to order out from Roots yesterday since it's close to my grandma's house. We ordered on the phone and our food was prepared and ready within 20 minutes. I checked the bags before I left to make sure everything was there since it was a big order. And i was missing this sauce for the pad Thai. I asked them for the sauce, and the women working there got an attitude with me saying I should've ordered it with the meal, which I did! The Pad Thai portion was huge and she gave me this tiny condiment cup that maybe had to a tablespoon of sauce. When I asked for a second because I got 2 orders of Pad Thai she got even more annoyed with me and reluctantly gave me another. Mind you still not enough for the (2) large portions. I easily dropped 100 bucks at this restaurant and was met with rude customer service. Not only that but the roots ramen I ordered was awful!!! NO FLAVOR!!! The broth was clear liked dish water.. just a dump of noodles, over done/dry pork belly, and even the boiled eggs wasn't even marinated in any sauce. I was extremely disappointed. My parent's Pad Thai noodles were just dry and no flavor either. The only thing we had that was enjoyable was the pork buns. I probably won't go back and just stick to Terakawa. I give them a star for prompt take out process. But the flavorless meals for the price you pay is not worth it! read more

I think this place is average. Pho bowl was nice but does not include cilantro, and the quantity is not as 12 dollar worth. Chicken Pad thai has no peanuts or enough bean sprouts and chicken. It is little bit greasy. Shrimp dumpling was good, but the other dumpling order I forgot the name was not good. The dumplings were served late. Disclaimer: I might be biased and spoiled by California's Bay Area. Seeing this place have such high ratings gave me higher expectations for the food. Everything about this restaurant was really nice except for the food. Upon entering, the restaurant has a warm atmosphere to it. It's also very clean and doesn't feel cramped, with a slight hipster feeling. The waiters are very attentive, and my water glass was never empty. The food was alright. When a place offers all kinds of Asian food, including Chinese, Japanese, Hong Kongnese, Taiwanese, Thai, and Vietnamese, it's probably good to not have high expectations. I appreciate the nod towards all these different countries, but ramen is probably best served in a tiny ramen shop and dim sum is probably best in a dim sum restaurant. I ordered the (chicken) Pad Thai. While each individual ingredient was very well made, the combination of them was very disappointing. I thought the chicken was very tender and the noodles were chewy and good, but the overall taste was bland. It lacked that slight sweetness and sour taste which makes pad thai oh-so-delicious, and kind of just tasted like spicy bland noodles. My friend ordered the Thai Coconut Bowl, which was a lot better than the Pad Thai. The chicken in this was also very tender. The curry sauce was okay, but felt like it lacked depth, and the purple rice was definitely interesting. Overall, alright, but did not feel like it was worth the price. Overall, I thought Roots had an interesting idea. It is definitely convenient for customers to be able to just visit one restaurant to try a wide variety of Asian dishes, but if you are looking for the yummiest "insert any Asian food here", this is probably not the place for you. read more

I came here on a Monday night with a friend around 7:30p. When we arrived the place was very busy. There were only 2 tables available and one was under a reservation so the host sat us at a high top by the window. To our surprise, she then sat 2 other people at our table. This place is not equipped to handle communal seating, so we were very close. I requested to be moved and the host obliged without question. It's also BYOB which is great! We opted to share the pork buns ($8). They were okay. Very little pork belly and oddly, they add crushed peanuts. I ordered the Drunken Noodles with beef ($15) and it was actually pad see ew with a kick, which I love! Had dinner here on New Year's Day. Family and I were seated right away. I had the General Roots bowl with ramen noodles and chicken breast (it was pretty much like General Tso's chicken). It was delicious!! My only gripe is that they didn't cut off all the pieces of fat off the chicken so I tasted the fatty bits even though the chicken pieces were deep-fried. Not a huge deal though. Servers were very nice and food came out quickly. Our table also ordered soup dumplings, pho bowls, and ramen bowls. It was all tasty, but a tiny bit on the bland side. Recalling that was a Roots specialty, I stopped in. The seating was full. I passed two or three couples waiting for a table and stepped up to the hostess to put my name on the list. Without stepping over to the reservation book to glance at the names or pick up her pen, she said "oh, we will not have a table for one for at least half an hour. Would you like to order take-out?" (No, I did not want take out...) The manner in which I was addressed suggested that the restaurant didn't wish to have a single diner taking up a table on a Saturday night.
