Simply wow. My wife and I went here for a date night just to get EVERYONE off our backs that can't stop talking about this place. Now I get it -- this place is among one of the best restaurants in Princeton, without the Palmer Square price tags. My wife got the Thai Red curry bowl, and I got the Thai basil. This was the freshest and most delicious tasting Thai food we've had since we visited Bangkok a few years back. We had the pork buns and dumplings for a first course and they were delicious, even though those serving sizes were small. The entree serving sizes make up for that however -- they are huge. The only downside is the difficulty of getting a table at peak hours. I'll be making reservations next time, which is a testament to their success. read more

After driving around the wrong shopping center for a little while, I made it to Roots. I'd been wanting to try this place and was not disappointed!- group of friends came here and ordered a lot of appetizers: 2 types of dumplings, seaweed salad, spicy tuna and cucumber avocado rolls, and pork buns. Everything was very good! It's hard to find a place where everyone is happy- especially when you throw a picky eater in the mix- but this place pleases everyone. We definitely ran the gamut of Asian fusion. I got the drunken noodles with veggies. It's hard to go wrong with that and they lived up to my expectations. Friends got a chicken teriyaki bowl with purple rice (never had that before and it was fantastic), short rib (only meal that we agreed we wouldn't get again), ramen (tasty but not my favorite), beef broth soup (all accounts said this was the best), and kimchi fried rice. I ate here a few times a few years ago. It's gone downhill. I ordered the Drunken Noodle the last time I was in and, despite the menu not saying it came with eggs (other menu items in the same category mentioned that they did or did not have eggs), it came chock full of eggs. I have a severe allergy, so this is a problem. Luckily my dining partner noticed and I sent it back. Still, I'm leaving the three star review. The Drunken Noodle without the deadly item was oily. Just drenched in oil. It would have been good without so much dang oil! It's so expensive here, too. In the past, this place was pretty good but still so expensive. It worked as an in-between Chinese/Asian restaurant if you couldn't make it out to Edison or Philly or the city. I've had no luck finding decent Chinese restaurants around here (a forlorn farewell to Tiger Noodle under new ownership). So, just drive to Edison or Philly or the city when you can and skip the Chinese fare in this part of town. Not worth your buck. Or in this case, your 20 bucks. read more

I've been wanting to come to roots for a while now since the reviews and pictures seemed promising, but I was underwhelmed by the food. I ordered the roots ramen, spring rolls, and Thai tea. The roots ramen was pretty disappointing. The meat was okay but the broth was bland, not rich and flavorful like I was expecting it to be. There's other restaurants in the area that have ramen that is better and cheaper. The spring rolls were subpar and lacked any good flavor. They tasted pretty similar to the ones my high school used to serve. I did really like the Thai tea, though. The tea, service, and atmosphere made up for some of disappointment caused by the ramen and spring rolls. I'm a sucker for an aesthetic restaurant. Overall, I think roots is...okay. I think it definitely caters more towards American taste though, so if you're looking for authentic flavors you should probably try somewhere else. I might come back again to try some of their other dishes which seem more promising. read more

Such a great discovery! Hidden in the Whole Foods complex, roots has great pan-Asian cuisine. Each dish is a unique take from the traditional dish, with options like gluten free, vegetarian, and purple multigrain rice. Also a large diverse menu, from Vietnamese to Korean, Japanese and Thai, there's probably something for everyone. The labeling on the menu is awesome for people with allergies or preferences and should happen more! Lunch is always crowded. However, they get the food out to you very quickly - and the food has been consistent each time I've eaten in. They also do a killer take out business, at lunch time its not uncommon to see 10-12 bags lined up waiting for their owners. During lunch hours, as denoted by the sign when you walk in - order at the cashier and self seat, they will bring the food out to you. I've sampled a good amount on the menu and all have been good, albeit not great. Portions are always huge, and served piping hot. The smoothies are on the pricey side, but they can be worth it. My go to is the drunken noodles - they are good, hint of spice, and with the added protein (beef or shrimp usually for me) - it rounds out the meal well and I always have left overs. Hopefully will visit for dinner service soon, but lunch is just fine for now as the service is quick, and I'm in and out within an hour after REAL food instead of something "fast" for lunch. I detrached a star for uncomfortable chairs, feels a bit "chipotle" like in design. While I've had a few pleasant experiences here, I ordered a dish without an allergen. It was confirmed thrice - once before ordering, once while ordering and when the dish was served but what do you know, the dish contained my allergen! Of course, mistakes happen but what was worse was that neither server apologized for potentially causing a hospital trip. They treated us as being nuisances. I had the Thai Coconut bowl. It was great and the portion was plentiful. I do recommend to get it less spicy if your not a huge spice person. The steak pot stickers, Thai spring rolls, and scallion pancakes were also amazing. However the service did not tie it all around for me. They were very slow with the bill and picking the bill up. Additionally when we entered the restaurant the host was not present and was instead speaking to fellow employees across the restaurant. Up next: drunken noodles with shrimp and Thai coconut chicken. I was taken back by the dishes for two reasons. First, the portions were huge! Secondly, (more disappointingly) nothing was spicy. Even though they were marked spicy. Thai food with no spice? No bueno. The two dishes were simply good. Nothing much to write home about for the drunken noodles, but the Thai coconut sauce was superb. Oh, and extra brownie points for offering white, brown, AND purple rice! They also have a secret menu... their crepe menu. Actually, it's no secret, but only provided on a blackboard in the restaurant. If you've been taking notes so far, just order the strawberry banana nutella crepe and thank me later. I tend to cringe at the words "Asian Fusion", picturing a muddled mess of flavors and dishes. The place got a little crowded after we had reached there around 1pm. We ordered the bowls - thai coconut veg, thai basil veg, eggplant garlic and chicken teriyaki. All of them were tasty, but we voted for eggplant garlic bowl as the best. We tried 2 sushi rolls - avocado cucumber and sweet potato. Both were good. Enjoyed this little gem of a place. What I didn't know is it is a BYOB!! Missed opportunity. We didn't have reservations and by the host's facial expression that seemed unacceptable. Lol. We were there for an early dinner, it was busy but tables were available. We ended up being seated in under 10 minutes. Service by the waitress was great all night. The food was delicious! Enjoyed spring rolls as an app, coconut Thai chicken on purple rice, and drunken noodles with beef. Both dishes were very tasty. For dessert, after careful deliberation, we chose the citrus crepe with ice cream.... only to find out 10 mins later that they were out of regular ice cream. Grrr. Ended up ordering the lemon crepe, which didn't have as much "filling" or lemon taste as we expected. Also order the fried ice cream, which was probably the biggest disappointment of the night. It took forever to come out, and it ended up coming out possibly "undercooked" (partly frozen "icey" ice cream and tempura coating was soggy/soft). We discovered roots on yelp and was quite thrilled to find a place with such variety on the menu! We came around lunch time and noticed that the place was packed signaling that it must be a crowd favorite! We tried to order a bunch things to get taste of the menu! We ordered shrimp fried rice which turned out to be the star of the spread! The shrimp was fresh and the rice had a spicy kick! The spring rolls were crisp and fresh and the sauce was well flavored as well! The dumplings were a bit bland so I was not a huge fan of those but they came out nice and hot. As for the sushi rolls, they were fresh as well but I can say that I've had better. The Thai iced tea was amazing and I can definitely say that if I go back that drink will always be in my order! I have been here twice, and both times had a pleasant experience. Although you can make reservations it didn't seem too crowded when I was there (both walk ins) and the longest I had to wait was about 5 minutes. It is a very family friendly environment and the table sizes varied from couples to parties of about 6. I also think there were options to join tables if the need came. I had the roots Ramen, and although I forgot to take a picture it had he typical Ramen look and came with pork and veggies. The broth wasn't spicy, so I had to ask for sriracha separately. The overall ambience was very welcoming, and it is at a small shopping center next to the highway (might be easy to miss if you're not from the area). The crowd of customers was mixed and I saw almost every age group. Definitely give it a try! read more

Oh, how I love this place! My friend and I went for lunch and were immediately impressed with what a comfortable and welcoming feel it has. We met at exactly noon and were among the first few customers. Just 15 minutes later, it was a FULL house and now I know why! First of all, the food was fantastic. I got the Thai Basil Chicken Bowl and couldn't have been any happier with my choice. Out of my options to get white rice, brown rice, purple rice, or ramen noodles for my bowl, I chose purple rice and absolutely loved it. This was my first experience having purple rice and I can honestly say it my new favorite grain. It is very similar to brown rice, but with a nutty taste to it. It was really the perfect combination with the Thai Basil chicken and vegetables. The bowl was doused in a brown sauce which was very flavorful. My friend ordered the Teriyaki Beef Bowl and was also very content with her choice. She was raving about the meat being cooked to perfection. The protocol is that you order your food at the counter, take a seat, and one of the friendly staff members will bring your meal out to you. Service was very prompt. The plating was simple and the dishware was clean and modern. The thing that really sticks out to me about Roots is that their food is relatively healthy, without being boring or tasteless. They use the perfect portion of meats, vegetables, sauce and seasonings to make your meal flavorful and exciting! I also really appreciate their portion size. I left having finished my entire meal and although quite full, I wasn't "roll me out the door" full, I was comfortable full! I will definitely be returning to this place for lunch. Several family members and I stopped by Roots on the way to University Medical Center at Princeton, to visit my mom. I was looking for a place for dinner that would be amenable to everyone, and nothing too expensive. Roots totally fulfilled our needs that night. We were able to come in as a group of six, including my grandmother in a wheelchair, and they were able to accommodate us immediately. We were all rather intrigued by the availability of purple rice to accompany the entrees, since we have had it before on very few occasions, and were curious to see how they would cook it, to make sure it was flavorful and soft enough, as these types of wild rice can have a cardboard/gritty texture if not cooked properly. We started the night with some appetizers, including the spicy Korean squid (highly recommend). and everyone ordered a different entree, including the basil chicken, coconut milk chicken, duck, sushi, short ribs, and salmon. Everybody seemed to enjoy their meals, although my grandmother complained that her food tasted bland. But she's a very picky eater and her critiques should be ignored or taken with a grain of salt at the very least. We even ordered some ramen to go, for my sister and dad who were already in the hospital. I ordered the spicy ramen for my dad, as he is always complaining that restaurants never make food spicy enough for him. This time, his meal was hot enough to have his nose running and received his highest accolades, as he enjoyed his food immensely. From the other reviewers, I learned that Roots is also owned by the people who run another Asian fusion restaurant off of Quaker Bridge Road, Elements Asia. I have to say that I enjoyed Elements Asia slightly better. But Roots is a quality restaurant in its own right, and is worth a try if you're in the area. read more

I'm posting this review half year after the fact. Roots says it serving up Asian cuisine with a modern flare. On the menu they do have quite the variety of Asian dishes, from Thai, Japanese, Taiwanese, Vietnamese. As far as modern flare goes, food is plated nicely and garnished onto fancy white plates and the restaurant is modern looking. They do make their food with fresh ingredients. The food here is not bad, but compared to their restaurant counterparts that serve up food specific for their ethnic specialty, I think it's a notch below. read more

I have been enjoying Roots about twice a month for the last two months and I am never disappointed. I had the Teriyaki Bowl with Chicken. I found the sauce to be a bit sweeter than I usually like however when combined with the cabbage it felt a little less sweet which was appreciated. The chicken was just slightly crispy which was nice and the vegetables kept their crisp. I enjoyed this dish and would definitely recommend it IF you like a teriyaki sauce that leans to the sweeter side. read more

Dim Sum Review Roots is a very popular "Asian Fusion" house in the Windsor Green Shopping Center on southbound Rt. 1 in West Windsor, NJ. (Yeah. I know it says Princeton, but it isn't.) For a first visit, dim sum seemed like the way to go to sample as much as possible of what comes out of the kitchen. We ordered a variety of small plates at the cashier, and took a table to await the foods' arrival. The space is attractive with dark tones and simple utilitarian furniture. The tables are far enough apart to not feel cramped nor have privacy violated. First to arrive were the Pork Dumplings (No Soup Dumplings today), Shrimp Shumai, Thai Spring Rolls, followed by the Scallion Pancakes and Roast Pork Bun. They were all attractively plated and made for a pretty tabletop. Perhaps it is unfair, but I had dim sum in Chinatown Philly a few weeks before (Ocean Harbor), and it was hard not to make comparisons. Roots was on the short end. Although everything was at least okay here, nothing stood out as something I wanted to have again. The dumplings were the strongest offering, with a nice meat/spice mix and fairly thin skin. With the accompanying vinegar/ginger dipping sauce, they were alright and satisfying. The shrimp shumai seemed to have been made elsewhere, because the skin was thicker than the dumplings, and the shrimp had been cut into small pieces so that its presence within was almost imperceptible. If not a whole shrimp, than at least a big enough piece to be detectable should have been within. I could taste it, but there was nothing to chew. The spring rolls were nicely browned, but filled mostly with air and veggies. Not much there, there. The scallion pancakes were decent with a nice sauce. The roast pork bun had the meat on the outside rather than within, maybe because it had opened during preparation, but the fun of stuffed buns is biting into it to discover what is inside. There was not much pork, and a lot of bun. Good taste, but less that it could have been. Lunch was crowded, and Roots is clearly a success. This review is an outlier, but I was hoping for more. We were very happy with our first visit. Food was fresh and tasted amazing. Started with the tuna tartar and pork buns...i had to Roots Roll with sashimi and wife had the bowl with ramen noodles with thai chicken. We are already making plans to go again. Make reservation on a Friday evening even if your going before 6pm....it was 90% full. Only criticism would be the size of the salmon sashimi....way to big...rather than 3 large pieces could have been 5 normal pieces. It's BYOB so thats always a plus in my book. I've been twice and have enjoyed both occasions. The food is fresh and flavorful. My dining companion usually gets the dimsum options: dumplings and pork buns. The buns are more like gua-bao than an enclosed steam bun. The Thai curry rice bowl was spicy and the purple rice was a great texture. The Thai Iced Tea was sweet, but not disgustingly super sweet so that was a good balance to the curry. Would definitely go again. read more

Some things were better than others. My husband and I started with steamed vegetable dumplings which were excellent, served hot, and with tofu and crunchy green vegetables. Going to be dreaming about those! We also had the chicken teriyaki bowl and while everything was fresh and hot, it was kinda bland in the taste department. Not sure if they just didn't add enough teriyaki or what. Also had the mango shrimp roll which I was looking forward too since it got so many good reviews. Maybe it was an off night but the roll was ok, the sauce on it was too sweet and the roll was soggy. I also want to point out that even though we went on a tuesday, it was really crowded and service was slow. It took them close to 20 mins to bring out my sushi roll which came out last after the other entree. Came here for lunch with a coworker and was very impressed with the quality of food and friendly service. First of all, when you walk up to the counter, you order your food and sit down to eat. From what the former server told me, the ha gao (shrimp dim sum) is bought frozen rather than made fresh, so I opted for the pork dumpling instead. The sushi bowl had a layer of tuna, salmon, and tuna albacore cubes sashimi on a bed of seasoned rice. The sashimi to rice portion was quite generous. The pork dumplings were served in a spaceship looking bowl drizzled with tangy soy sauce. The meat was very juice and spewed out when I bit into it.
