Prior to coming here I thought it be one of those asian restaurants catered to American taste buds; however, this place served food that tasted amazing. This place is one of those modern hipster places where they have mason jars for the drinks and wooden tables and bright lighting. I got the Taiwanese Noodles while my girlfriend ordered the Kimchi fried rice. Both were exploding with flavor and I really enjoyed the food. The prices were not that expensive but for some appetizers the prices seemed a bit excessive. Overall, I felt that this was a great experience. Roots is the kind of place I want to avoid at all times. Ripoff, is the word to describe this place. We went during dinner time, all of sudden this place is an "upscale" sit down dining experience (as supposed to order at the counter fast food during lunch time). The entree on the menu are at least $20 or more. We decided to give it a try by giving this place the benefit of doubt, my husband ordered filet mignone, I ordered the seared scallops, $23 and $25 respectively. The filet mignone came out to be your typical beef stir fry with rice, heavy marinated with brown sauce. The meat itself was chewy and fatty, definitely not the filet mignone cut. My scallops dish came with 3 scallops on the plate, some bok choy and some eggplant. The veggies were super salty, nothing special, it's just like your typical lunch special that you could've gotten for $10 during lunch time. The scallops were the worst, dry and tasteless, actually it tasted like bronze or iron. I could tell it was frozen scallops that were pan fried with no preparation to the taste. Normally I would be complaining about only 3 scallops for $25, this time it took me such an effort to just finish this 3 scallops cause they were barely edible. We ended up spending over $60 (taxes and tips) for 2 dishes (without drinks or appetizers) for a fast Chinese food that you could've gotten at any Chinese takeout for $20. read more

This was my favorite sit-down restaurant while traveling to Princeton over the past year. They have great food from different Asian countries, including Korean, Japanese, Thai and Chinese. The pad thai, pho, and coconut curry were my favorites. Everyone I brought here loved it and wanted to come again. Small plates: Seaweed salad- $4, nothing special, good but not amazing and relatively small portion Soup dumplings-$3, presentation was great! Not spicy as they said it would be, over all the dish was very satisfying if you don't expect it to be too spicy Entrees: Thai coconut bowl with ramen and chicken $14 - the ramen noodles were more like spaghetti. Had really good flavor and was as spicy as I wanted it to be Roots Ramen $15 - not much flavor, definitely had better ramen elsewhere. The pork belly was a little too hard. I would definitely not order this again Garlic eggplant with beef and shrimp $15- very flavorful and the noodles were on point. The best entree out of the three we ordered Dessert- strawberry, banana, and Nutella crepe $7.49- very simple and good, nothing amazing but hit the spot! Roots is one of our favorite places in town! We probably go there once a month at least. The decor is really nice and trendy -- but not so trendy that you feel uncomfortable or pretentious. The menu has a lot of options -- the prices are especially fair, given Princeton prices. Also, they change the menu fairly frequently, so you can always look forward to trying new things. In the past, some of our favorite dishes have been the pho, the char siu bao, the roots ramen, the edamame, and the pad thai. Every dish is very well seasoned, and both the pho and roots ramen have a delicious broth. The vegetables all taste very fresh, and the meats are well cooked. Service is usually very quick and efficient. The only reason we're giving Roots four stars instead of five is that sometimes the staff can be a little bit cold. If you come for dinner without a reservation - even if the place isn't too crowded - they give you a bit of an attitude. The waiters also aren't especially friendly. Despite this, though, Roots is definitely a great restaurant to visit. read more

The food and flavors are good, but they have gone downhill since they opened. Lunch takes more than 30 mins to be served. They raised their prices for food and significantly reduced the amount of tofu they put in the dishes. They have damaged the customer experience for bottom line improvements. Note: didn't even get to eat here, did not try the food because the staff was so difficult we couldn't get seated. Story: My girlfriend and I were visiting Princeton and found this place on Yelp. She called ahead to check the seating availability and the hostess who picked up said that she wasn't sure what it would be like and the only way to know would be to come in and see. Do we drove over from downtown Princeton, which is a short drive. We walked in and no staff were present at the podium for a few minutes. A few minutes later, a flustered hostess appeared asking us how she could help us. I asked for a table for two, and she asked if we had a reservation. No. So she should okay, give me a few minutes, and turned away. Note: she didn't maintain eye contact during most of this conversation and seemed to be looking around. We then sat down and waited 20 minutes before she returned. She asked us how many people in our party again, and said okay as she turned away without even telling us how long to wait. She also grabbed the other chairs in the waiting area for some reason and we were left with only the two chairs we were sitting on. After an additional 20 minutes pass, she is nowhere to be found and a half dozen people have walked in and are unattended to. Pic attached. I can't help but like this place having grown up in Lawrenceville down the road from Elements Asia. It was my family's special occasion restaurant when I was a teenager and then I went there many times as an adult in my own. Roots is owned by the same people or maybe they sold EA and now have Roots. I come here strictly to get the spicy tuna, salmon and avocado roll with spicy mayo and eel sauce. I know it's not super incentive and I could get it elsewhere. I'm happy to come here when I come to visit from Charlotte. I've been here twice and both times were good. Phenomenal food. I have been eying roots for a while because it looked so damn interesting and the photos online was so good. I gave it a try yesterday and I did not regret it. The Sushi bowl was the best poke I've ever had in my entire life and i eat a lot of poke. It was just so nice and just felt right. The fish was nice and buttery and the rice was soft and not hard and cold. Everything was just proportional and it really worked together to make an amazing dish. I had seared duck with taro croquettes which wasn't my favorite but it was still good nonetheless. It had soba noodles and a wine reduction sauce I believe. It was alright but the presentation was really nice. The beef pot stickers was good too. Service was fine, I made sure to go during off hours to get undivided attention but sadly I got left with a dish I didn't order but they thought I didso I had to pay for that as well because I'm too shy to turn back a dish. Everything we got from apps to the crepes was good. Nothing amazing but good enough that I would come back. The only thing is how large the menu is. Once a menu is so big and so diverse, I feel like its hard to actually be really good at anything you know? For apps we got the tuna avocado roll- Super fresh! We also got Pot stickers & Hargow both which were good. I really liked them both. The underwhelming portion of the night was the meals!! So underwhelmed. The dim sum options are very good and the stir fry bowls are delicious, however, their more traditional Asian dishes, in my opinion, fall short, like their bimbimbap, Taiwanese beef noodle soup, and Japanese ramen. This is a trendy fusion restaurant that has friendly service and a range of dishes. We shared a tuna tartare for appetizer, served with very crisp pita chips. It was a good serving size with fresh tuna, nicely flavored. I ordered the shoyu ramen for my meal, which wasn't quite as flavorful as I was hoping. I also wish there was a larger variety of vegetables in the bowl. The noodles themselves were fantastic, and the portion size was good, but honestly I've had better ramen from Torii (Kanki's noodle bar). I always drove by Roots, but never stepped inside until a few days ago. The restaurant inside is really pretty and when we got there around 7pm on a weeknight, only 1 high table was open to sit at. Soon there was a line out the door! We ordered the Chicken pad thai, vegetarian pho, and the Taiwanese beef noodle soup. The pad thai wasn't very flavorful and was a bit dry which was unfortunate. I work nearby and treat myself at least once a week. It is truly a treat. Call ahead if your picking up. They are very busy during lunch. Dinner seems to fill up quickly also. The atmosphere is clean and tastefully decorated. If you're dining in, you order at the counter and they bring it to your table. I've only had the sushi, which is consistently delicious. They have nice options of rice, white, brown or the very nutritious purple. The steamed dumplings are delicious and light as well. Last week I noticed that they juice their own drinks. I've been here for lunch probably about 10 times now since I go to school in the area. Every single time the food was fantastic and I keep bringing my friends to try it. They have great vegetarian options for my veg friends and they are on trend with nearly every food hype- juice bar, crepes, dumplings, fusion Asian, and sushi!! Even though it's fusion, they do a good job at keeping things authentic enough, as seen in their pho which is pretty good. Located in an unassuming strip mall near Whole Foods it's easy to miss Roots but please don't as they offer really tasty Asian fusion cuisine. What a great find! A casual Asian Fusion BYOB restaurant with very good food. The décor is clean and modern. We had beef pot stickers, salad (the ginger dressing is the best I've ever had!), and sweet potato rolls for appetizers. I can't vouch for the rolls because I didn't try them but the pot stickers and salad were very good and I would order them again. We all ordered bowls and the Thai coconut and Thai Basil were my favorites. For four of us the bill was $99.00 without the tip including four sodas. I actually have to take time to update my once glowing review of this place to detail how incredibly rude the owner was to me and my partner when we showed up for dinner. We were first in line waiting to be seated. The owner comes over to us then proceeds to completely ignore me and my partner who were very obviously standing in front of this very tall white man and his companion and asks them if they have reservations. They do. So she attends to them, seats them, and then asks us if we have a reservation. We say that we don't and she then continues to basically pretend we don't exist and attend to the other couples behind us. I get that she needed to figure out who had reservations but the fact that she didn't say something like "hang on give me just a second, let me figure out how long the wait will be" to us or just give us some common decency and respect irritated me. If you want to know how you can lose a customer, this is it folks.
