This place has been on my list of places to visit for some time now. I love burgers and would normally order a burger on my first visit to a restaurant with "burger" in its name, but I've had a lot of burgers lately, so I opted for the beer battered fish with side salad. Allow me to back up to our arrival. It was a nice day out, a little warm, but the patio is shaded. We asked if we could sit outside, as there were no other guests seated there at the time and the interior seemed rather dark and drab. Shortly after we were seated, my husband went inside to use the facilities and overheard the hostess telling our server that there was a table outside. She responded with a disappointed sounding "OUTSIDE?!" He returned to the table and told me about this as we reviewed the menu and specials while enjoying the little bucket of popcorn that they provide to each table, free of charge. The server, and her trainee, did take a while to come to our table, but she had a great attitude when they did. There was another server with a trainee shadowing him. They are also hiring, for anyone interested. We chose a peach margarita pitcher for $15. It was advertised on the sidewalk chalkboard like a special, but that is the regular menu price. It was the world's tiniest pitcher, but we still didn't finish it, so I guess it was perfectly-sized for the price. We also ordered potato skins as an appetizer. They were a bit stingy with the cheese, but extremely generous with the green onions. They were cooked well. Crispy skin with a fluffy, pillowy, potato inside. My husband, feeling more snacky than actually hungry, ordered two appetizers as his meal. He had the mini corndogs (very crunchy and delicious) and the onion rings. He said that everything hit the spot. The beer-battered fish came with two HUGE filets. They came to the table hot and crisp, but by the time I got them home, the beer-batter had gotten a bit soggy and grease-soaked. The side salad had huge chunks of iceberg lettuce (barely chopped) and some of the pieces were a bit brown around the edges. Sitting on the patio was nice and although there were several bees in the vicinity, the real flowers in the planter boxes surrounding the patio kept them distracted. After we ordered, several more patrons arrived and requested seating outside as well. There was a country playlist going and at least one of the songs had some pretty colorful language. As I heard the "MF" bomb drop for the second time, I looked around at the families with children sitting nearby. They appeared to be unphased. We noticed a dog bowl with "Roots" on it, so I'm guessing that they are pet-friendly. Eventually, I do want to return and try some of their burgers out. read more

I've been wanting to check out this place for awhile. My friend came for trivia and loved it. I stopped in on a Thursday night. Where I happened to be seated unfortunately had the AC blasting so it was cold. It took awhile for my waitress to come over, but she was training someone. I also never received any popcorn. My waitress was very friendly and knowledge. My food came out fairly quickly and everything was hot. I had asked for a side of mayo so I had to remind them on it. The Rueben was good. Next time I'd love to try a burger. I'll definitely give them another shot since it seems like the training may have disrupted their usual serving flow. I received an email from Roots stating every night specials. Tonight was a $6.00 burger and $4.00 pint When we walked in, we were handed a bucket of popcorn and shown to our table. The popcorn was good. Like fresh popped without too much salt We were greeted within minutes by our server, George. Definitely an asset to the business. Our friend asked if was old enough to work there Without a second thought he explained that he has been working every job in the restaurant since he was 13. In Indiana you can serve food but not adult beverages. He explained that he had washed dishes, cooked, etc. Did anything he was asked to do He was efficient with our order and really added to our dining experience as we enjoyed teasing him and his response. I had to express proudness of him as I had also worked as a young person Our burgers were awesome. Cooked to perfection, bun was grilled to with the roots brand seared on top. Lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and secret sauce. I was a huge fan of Scotty's Brewhouse (IYKYK), so have been anxiously waiting to try Roots for quite some time. The menu is HUGE. I'm a sucker for pimento cheese so anytime that's available I gravitate towards it. That said, I tried the 'Southern Pride' burger (two patties), which comes with pimento cheese, bacon, secret sauce, tomato jam, and a side of fries. The burger was delicious and the fries were crunchy. Quite messy and greasy, but definitely tasty. Overall, I'd definitely come back! read more

Was in the area and met up with a friend here. Went into the restaurant and people were friendly but they were a lil awkward since they were looking like this was their first job. The workers at the counter seemed to be high schoolers who would have rather not been working (idk maybe it's just the gen z or younger vibe going on). Whoever took us to our table didn't give us enough menus. Beer list isn't readily available along with which specials which is annoying as a consumer. We ordered the tots and it had a tiny hair in it but we didn't mention anything to the server bc I didn't think it was the end of the world but eh gross. Sydney, our server, was nice. Roots was an unexpected treat. We got in easily on a busy Friday night. There were six of us including two kids. They have an awesome kids menu. Drinks games out quickly and I had a delicious vodka tonic. The servers are mostly young college students that are attentive. They are unusually well staffed. Our server was very friendly. The menu specializes in a version of smash burgers. There is a good selection of healthy options as well. The food took awhile to come out, but reasonable as they were busy. The kids were able to color with complementary supplies. I had the All American burger with a single patty. The burger had a great smoke flavor with lots of lettuce and sauce. The generous helping of fries was perfectly crispy. This was a delicious meal. My husband had to e tenderloin which he said was perfectly seasoned. The kids ate their grilled cheese and fruit but were most excited about the ice cream dessert that followed. The dining room is decorated with historic and current local photos of Carmel. There is a popular outdoor door patio, but we ate inside. The noise level was pretty loud inside with people excited by the weekend. There was high energy all around. We went on Wednesday night, steak night and trivia night. You know when you enter and they only have one menu available you're in for a treat! My husband and one of our daughters had the steak special. How can you go wrong for $9.99? They both had a salad, steak and fries. They cleared their plates so it must have been good! My other daughter had a tenderloin sandwich and fries. I tried a bite and we agreed it was very salty, but still good. I had the monthly special of grilled cheese dippers with dill tomato soup. It was okay, but I wouldn't get it again. The soup was more like a marinara sauce to me. Overall we enjoyed ourselves even though we didn't participate in the trivia. Our visit to Roots this time was less than stellar. First we ordered dill chips, they were stellar. However, the rest wasn't. Steak tacos were on special. We ordered them and discovered the menu neglected to mention they were smothered in blue cheese and horseradish. The waiter neglected to mention it as well. We also ordered a fish sandwich and tots with tartar sauce. Tots tasted of salt and the tartar sauce was mostly mayo. Waiter exchanged the tacos for a jalapeño burger, which wasn't all that great. Normally the food and service has been top notch. This time it was lacking. I doubt we'll return. read more

The place is really cute, menu is great, but the garlic cheeseburger I got was not very exciting. It just didn't have too much to it, especially for a garlic cheeseburger. Service was good, but our waitress forgot things left and right and we had to keep asking for stuff. We had to ask for drink refills, the side of ranch we asked for upon ordering, then a second time since we both asked for it and she only brought mine. My friend and I drove an hour from Lafayette to try Roots. I was looking forward to the PB and J with onion rings. After we ordered the waitress came back to say they were out of onion rings. I generally don't like fries or tater tots but tried the fries and was so disappointed. The burger itself was really good but the bacon was slightly chewy. I was excited to return for the annual Tenderloin Tuesday but they've changed the recipe and the batter was so full of black pepper that the tenderloin looked black and I didn't even get the $2 discount for my inedible food Our waitress was clearly flustered, I didn't want to bother her again after making her fix the bill when she charged us for a margarita that they were out of. Other disappointments were the hour long wait for food, a side of fruit that was swimming in juice, and lemonade so watered down we had to ask for a replacement drink. Went with family on our way to see Disney on Ice. 4 adults and 2 children.The whole crew was great with the kids and adults. I went to Roots Burger Bar solely because I had read that the former owner of Scotty's owned this. I gave too much credit to that old memory. I entered the business and asked for a table. They asked if a high top table was OK. I told her that I would prefer a normal table (due to a back problem that I have). She replied, "we really only have high top tables left." OK, whatever. Why bother asking my preference if you're not going to give me what I ask for? I was seated at a high top table, then looked immediately to my left and saw two normal tables right next to me. WTH??? I saw that they had a $.90 wings special today. I always loved the huge wings that they sold at Scotty's Brewhouse, so I ordered a couple of those to go with my PB&J burger. I was asked if I wanted my wings before my burger came out, or with the burger. I opted to get them before. A few minutes later, my burger showed up. No wings. I had to ask for the wings to be brought out. Whoever put my burger together had the motor skills of a one-year-old. The patties, cheese, and bacon were all askew. They were nowhere close to being stacked on the bun. I basically had to re-assemble my sandwich. The bottom bun was so soggy that it immediately started to fall apart. The grape jelly was all on one side of the burger, and the tiny blob of peanut butter was on the opposite side. You would think they might've put those together... The seasoned fries were OK. I tried some of their fry sauce, because they seem to make a big deal of it here. It just tastes like a really watered-down honey mustard. When the wings showed up, I almost laughed out loud. They are no bigger than what you get at Buffalo Wild Wings. I really thought they would be the large ones that they used to sell at Scotty's, but I was wrong again. Their iced tea was almost clear. It was the weakest tea I've had in a long time. The restaurant was so loud that I couldn't hear my waitress talking to me. The noise level was ridiculous. Overall, the food was average at best. Presentation was terrible. The price wasn't too bad. My waitress was really nice, and she was probably the high point of the whole dining experience (thanks, Anjana). This past Thursday, my husband and I walked over to Roots for dinner. We genuinely enjoy supporting locally owned businesses and value having good, walkable restaurants in our neighborhood. Unfortunately, our experience this evening fell short of expectations. We've dined at Roots a handful of times, usually for dinner, and our experiences have generally been fine, if unremarkable. This visit, however, led us to decide we won't be returning for the time being. It became clear that the restaurant is experiencing challenges with operational planning and staffing. Our server was kind and professional throughout the evening and repeatedly apologized to us and nearby tables for delays caused by a short-staffed kitchen. We waited about 30 minutes for our food, which might have been manageable on its own, but what followed made the experience disappointing. I ordered a bowl of chili that arrived lukewarm. I let our server know, and she brought out another bowl, or possibly reheated the same one, but it was still lukewarm. At that point, I chose not to eat it. My husband kindly shared half of his burger with me. While appreciated, the burger itself looked hastily assembled, which reinforced the sense that the kitchen was overwhelmed. Our server was transparent and expressed concern that the kitchen was sending out food that was not fully prepared. As we finished, we noticed multiple nearby tables still waiting for their meals, and as we left, several groups were waiting outside to be seated. I felt for both the staff and the guests, as it seemed like a difficult night for everyone involved. I'm sharing this not to criticize, but out of concern. Roots has the potential to be a strong neighborhood restaurant, and I hope the owner takes time to review staffing, kitchen workflow, and overall operations so both staff and diners can have a better experience. For now, we will be taking a break from dining here, but we genuinely hope to see improvements in the future. read more

My wife decided on this restaurant for her birthday dinner. It looked promising due to being kid-friendly, along with a great menu. The kids drinks were great, fun flavors and little toys on top. That was the only good part of this meal, and earned the second star. The service was a nightmare. After ordering, we got our drinks, and refills were never even considered or offered after that. The waitress was nowhere to be found. My wife had to flag her down just to ask for a refill after about 45 minutes, and asked for more popcorn which never showed up. No apologies from the staff, other than "The kitchen is slammed, we are waiting on one thing." then another 20 minutes of absolutely nothing. Over an hour wait for food, which was then cold, other than some mini corn dogs for one of the kids. I guess that's what takes an hour to make while the rest sits cold? The food was probably good when it was fresh, maybe? Who knows, we didn't get that chance. Several other tables were upset and asked for a manager. We overheard that they were told there were no managers on site. Seems convenient, but would explain why everything was run so poorly. The kids meals were supposed to come with ice cream, no mention of that all by the waitress. Luckily we hadn't told the kids, we didn't even want to know how long that would take to be delivered. We decided to cut our losses and leave without even asking about it. This trip was a very bad way to end a special day. We were very disappointed. read more

We've been coming to Roots for years and it's still consistently good. My kids love the popcorn you get in the beginning while we wait for food. The kids menu is huge...it offers so much. I love the All American burger and you have to ask for the yellow sauce for your fries! My husband got the PB&J burger and said "don't knock it til you try it!" We love this place! read more
