We have an açaí bowl place where we live and it's ridiculously popular, while that's good (and it started in Hawaii) Roots & Rye beats it by leaps and bounds! Their bases are so cold and creamy and I love the fact that you get to choose what you want in your bowl including layering your bases! Their bowls are good but the customer service is just terrible! I used to frequent Roots & Rye's other location in Pasadena but one of the associates was super rude and when I tried to get in contact with management, nothing. I decided to try out this location and same thing, poor customer service! There were two girls in there and the one that helped me first was super nice. She had blonde hair if I remember correctly and looked super young. The other girl was busy having a conversation at the register with a customer who appeared to be her friend. She had dark hair and a piercing on her face. Her attitude was stank! A couple walked in so she ended her conversation and came over and asked me what fruits I wanted while I was still talking to the first girl helping me. I told her banana's and strawberries. She started to cut the banana then my bowl was passed to her, she decided she wanted to rush me and rolled her eyes a few times. When my bowl was finished being prepared I paid and didn't give me a bag or spoon. She walked away as if I weren't still standing there. The first young lady came over and I asked her for a bag and spoon and she apologized and gave me both. Needless to say I will not be giving Roots & Rye another dime! read more

Honestly, first time here and I went for the stellar reviews. But take your service somewhere else. The two cashiers were unbelievably rude and could not be bothered. They were belittling and rude when I didn't see the sign for social distancing, saying 1 person only but they had two people in there. It was an accident no need to be rude about it. Their overall attitude was rude, I did notice their attitude change towards "specific" people. It was truly nauseating experience from their condescending attitude. the BEST ACAI place in Pasadena. I have tried Acai Bar and SunLife Organics, and others and Roots and Rye is by far the Best!! The fact that you can chose multiple bases just shows how this place goes above and beyond. They offer 3 different sizes for bowels and I got the large. I got Acai as my base and it was already frozen which I prefer because I hate when my Acai base melts too fast. The flavor of the base was sooooo good and the consistency was so nice! My boyfriend got the blue majik and LOVED it. He said it was so refreshing. There's so many other bases you can mix and match. Another thing that puts this place above all the others is the unlimited toppings. Every other Acai place charges like $0.50 or even $1.00 for extra toppings. And this place lets you get UNLIMITED!! Including peanut butter and almond butter which is usually a more expensive add on!! I literally can't get over the fact that you can get as many toppings as you want (that's fits of course). I got strawberries, bananas, vanilla granola, toasted coconut, peanut butter, and bee pollen. Next time I'll try more toppings but It was so delicious!! The best smoothie bowl I've ever had!! I would highly recommend this place over any others. Plus the workers were SO nice and friendly. They also wore masks properly, unlike some other açaí places I've been to. I've been addicted to this place. I always get the Acai Smoothie with Oat Milk and it's so good. So comforting and refreshing at the same time. I don't add any of the add-ons (complimentary), just because I always share the smoothie with my toddler daughter. The smoothie is $8 but we enjoy is so much so it's worth it to me. I definitely need to try out their Acai bowls as well. Roots & Rye is a great addition to Old Town Pasadena. The workers here are friendly and every thing comes out relatively quick. I got the charcoal coconut and açaí base with almond butter, banana, blueberries, french granola. Extremely rude staff. Posted signs outside show the request for 6 feet social distancing but nothing about not being able to serve more than one customer at a time. I walked in with a face covering on while one customer was ordering inside and instead of kindly stating "we apologize but is it alright if you wait outside as we are only accepting one customer at a time in the store at the moment", the girl very rudely almost jumped at me from over the counter shouting "you can't be in here and have to go outside until we are done!". I understand there are new guidelines and restrictions that businesses are trying to adhere to however, you don't need to make your customers feel like they committed a crime walking into your establishment. She was very sweet and recommended me a few toppings which I told her to impress me since I am not picky. WOW, this place changed my life. The acai bowl was soooo good! Almond, cashew, peanut butter - if you're a nut lover this is the part where you start ascending into heaven but it doesn't stop there because then you can add all kinds of drizzles bee pollen, honey - there were just so many choices!!!! By the time I finished I think I put too many toppings on because after a while I can barely taste my bases because I went so overboard with putting everything on top out of excitement. I will definitely be back. And did I mention the price??? I think it's great that you can choose different sizes giving you an option for how much you want to spend on your bowl.
