I went with a friend for lunch and the service was fantastic! Friendly and attentive. I had a cup of tomato basil soup that was chunky and tasty - not too creamy, which was nice. My main course was meatloaf with garlic mashed potatoes. I really liked the meatloaf, but the sauce on top was a bit overpowering. I ended up scraping it off. The mash was yummy. First visit to Root Cellar this evening, great atmosphere and delicious food. We ordered the Beer Bread w/Honey Butter, Shrimp & Grits, and the Meatloaf all were filling. The bread was hearty, soft and fresh, shrimp was perfectly cooked and the grits were creamy. The meatloaf flavor reminded me of Mom's home cooking. Oh and the service, Clayton despite being an LSU fan, was great. He was professional,polite, shared great recommendations. We will definitely be back!!! read more

Went on a Sunday, was busy with a 20-30 minute wait. We were seated in 15 minutes and ordered right away. Watched as other tables were brought their food in 15 - 20 minutes. Took almost 40 minutes to get our food. My French toast was barely warm, the gravy on my husband's breakfast was already cool and congealed on top. Legitimately the best date night spot in town. We have gone a hand full of times now and everything is amazing. Such great food, this time we got the pesto chicken flatbread appetizer, blackened chicken Mac & cheese, ahi tuna, and a side of Brussels sprouts. We finished off with the snickerdoodle bread pudding. Our service is always so great and tonight was no exception with Cameron. She was attentive and knowledgeable and just delightful to be around. We got a few cocktails, The Huckleberry, Bloody Mary, and some kind of espresso martini- which were hand delivered by the bartender who checked in to make sure they were tasting good- which they do were. A really nice setting and worth waiting for a table. Jalapeño gravy is surprisingly good, good biscuits and they really stepped it up with the shrimp and grits. Came here for breakfast. Fantastic food, service, and atmosphere. We had the porters chicken biscuit/sandwich, challah French toast, with homemade potatoes, eggs, and bacon. It's become quite rare to have a sit down meal where everything you order is impressive and served hot. Waitstaff were attentive and sweet. The restaurant itself is well thought out floor plan wise, plenty of roomy seating, and nicely decorated. We look forward to trying their picnic area with our pups and dinner soon. This place is an absolute joke. My wife and I get there and they tell us to wait one second while they clean off a table. So we wait for 10 minutes and mind you we are right in front of them on a bench. Then a couple walks in and they immediately sit at an open table. I have visited The Root Cellar in San Marcos a few times and was expecting similar food quality and service. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. We went for breakfast and were greeted by a friendly hostess and seated without a wait. Our drinks and food came out quickly but the food was sub-par. I had the Avacado toast w/fried egg. The bread was not toasted and the egg was overcooked. My side of sausage was the highlight of my meal. My husband ordered the Hill Country biscuit breakfast w/ jalapeño cream gravy. There was no jalapeño flavor at all. His side of fried potatoes were very dry. Our server asked if we wanted ketchup or salsa and we requested ketchup which he never brought. I loved the decor and concept but until the cook is better trained I will not be back. I gave 3 stars as the service was quick, mimosa was good and the potential is there. read more

The beet burger was okay, not the best that I've had. The brew house hamburger was raw, definitely could've been cooked more thoroughly. Also didn't care for the jam, It was a mess to eat. Decided to try Root Cellar for Sunday breakfast. Wait quoted 45, got sat within 15! Things started off great, ordered drink and food. Had funny banter with server. Then waited over an hour for our food. About 35 minutes in our server said he had messed up and forgot to order it. Retook our order and said he'd try to get it rushed. At least 30 minutes later it finally showed up. The manager avoided our table like the plague. Any good customer service would have addressed this head on and rushed food out of the kitchen, manager would have spoken to us, and maybe something done to the bill (but not expected). I think the biggest disappointment was the manager. Food was tasty, but there are plenty of other places to choose from. read more

I came in thinkin it was gonna be just another old cafe. NOT WHAT I EXPECTED. For an appetizer I had the beer bread an honey butter, FENOMINAL. The bread was perfectly crispy with the delicious honey butter. For the entrée I had the chicken and waffles, let me tell you,they were probably the best chicken and waffles I had ever had! The waffles were fluffy and chicken was crispy but also soft and tender. Perfectedly seasoned and so filling. The atmosphere was impeccable! So clean but also so enviteing! I like to try new places so I stop in here for breakfast as I was waiting for our trailer to get serviced at Camping World. Very quaint place, was greeted nicely as I walked in the door, seated promptly as they were not really busy. My waitress was very nice and accommodating.
