Beautiful place to be. The ambiance is pretty amazing. I was delayed in reviewing the place but the memories of my experience stayed with me that I could clearly share. My son, daughter-in-law, dad, and I recently celebrated my birthday at Gruene River Grill on a busy Friday night. We arrived starving, so we really appreciated that our 7:30 reservation was honored right on time and that our server was attentive and efficient. For dinner, my dad ordered the fish and chips with added shrimp, my daughter-in-law and I both chose the grilled chicken piccata, and my son had the balsamic ribeye. Christmas Eve lunch and a great choice! This was an excellent place to stop, and our server, Avery, was an absolute delight--friendly, attentive, and on top of everything from start to finish. We kicked things off with the calamari, which turned out to be a fantastic appetizer. In fact, it was so good we had to ask for extra dipping sauce because the first one disappeared almost immediately. I ordered the lunch schnitzel--WOW. It covered the entire plate and was cooked perfectly. Crispy, tender, and exactly what I was hoping for. My wife went with the chicken fried steak. The only downside for her was the gravy, which seemed a bit "off" and possibly a little too spicy for her taste. We grabbed a slice of carrot cake to go, and unfortunately that was the one miss of the meal. It just didn't live up to the rest of the experience. That said, I was very impressed overall with the restaurant, especially the festive Christmas ambiance. If I'm ever staying local again, this is definitely a place I'd revisit. read more

This wasn't the best place we visited during our trip, but it was one of the few restaurants accepting reservations, which we appreciated. The ambiance is beautiful, and the service was good, but the food itself was fairly mediocre. The Spinach Artichoke Dip wasn't worth the price in our opinion. It came with a basket of crushed tortilla chips and a relatively small portion of dip, and it was a bit too salty. I can only fully speak on the dish I ordered -- the Fish & Chips. The fish itself was good, but the batter didn't adhere well and separated from the fish. The fries were decent, but nothing particularly memorable. My husband ordered the Gorgonzola Burger and wasn't very impressed with it either. Overall, while the atmosphere and service were enjoyable, the food didn't quite live up to expectations. read more

First timers, and it did not disappoint. Our server Patty was awesome. The others reviews about them being really attentive about keep your drinks filled is true. We got the shrimp wontons appetizer, jalapeno madarin pork chops, & Salmon. Dessert, creme brulee for dessert. Shrimp wontons were OK, they look big but they wrap a lot of excess wonton wrapper around a shrimp so it was really tough/chewy. Salmon, 4/5, kind of bland. Pork Chop was our favorite, 4.5/5 Creme brulee 5/5 We were torn when she said the Ribeye was their main star of the menu so we'll have to come back for that. Gruene River Grill never disappoints, we like to sit close to the window area that overlooks the Guadalupe River, very nice! The service that evening was very good. And the chicken Guadalupe was perfect. I wish I had taken a better picture after I cut into it! It's topped with fresh fried tortilla strips , also has cheese and black beans and wonderful flavor, including pico. This wonderful chicken is embedded on mashed potatoes! Very delicious! read more

Food was amazing! Their Gorgonzola burger was perfectly cooked and seasoned - very filling too! Do try the blackberry cobbler - it is yummy without being too sweet. The street tacos were a fan favorite at the table as well - very tender steak on them! The servers were super nice and accommodating! Looking at the river out the window was pretty cool too. I got the Monterey Jack queso burger with American cheese instead of Monterey Jack which was very good. My fiancé liked her country fried steak. The spicy chicken sandwich was also solid. The fish tacos were a little light on fish meat though. The artichoke dip was a solid appetizer. And the fried artichoke was on point!! It was sort of like calamari but with artichoke instead. We arrived on a cold, rainy night after a long drive from Houston, ready for some comfort. The place has such a cool vibe--one of the rooms even gave off serious Hogwarts energy, which was a fun surprise. We were seated right away, and the warm, cozy atmosphere was just what we needed. I went with the chicken fried chicken, served with buttered corn and mashed potatoes. While the chicken did get a little soggy after about ten minutes, it was still hearty and satisfying. We visited Gruene River Grill on a Monday evening. We were seated right away. Amazing view. The entire restaurant is beautiful. We ordered the chips a queso appetizer. One of the woman I was with committed that, that was one of the best queso's she had!! It was really good : ) I ordered the Chicken Piccata. It was awesome. Not a NB native so this was my first time visiting or hearing about this area and place. Fun walkable location that's near the oldest dance hall In Texas, the atmosphere and architecture certainly reflected that. Service was friendly with plenty of people nearby , mostly college aged kids so expect your service to vary depending on who exactly. It's a laid back environment with reasonably priced food and portions that are generous. The value here goes a long way. Drinks are pretty consistently $13 or less even. Kids menu as well. My daughter made good use of the outdoor patio to see the river and even some wild life! Definitely feels like a community cornerstone that everyone has been to at some point. Food was good too. Mozzarella sticks that weren't soggy and bland, it's easy to be lazy with these but they tasted nice. I was recommenced the enchiladas, I thought they had a bit too much creama just plopped on top though I was able to enjoy regardless. The fried stuff was well prepared, MIL got a CFS that was extra crispy and my daughter had some chicken strips that had a similar breading. Overall this is an institution of the area. Food is good to average, drinks were well priced, and the building is interesting to be in. Parking can be a pain and the AC was working as well as it could in Texas August. read more

Was a little worried not having been there and it being an important date night for us but it was wonderful! Absolutely love the building but the food-that was a whole other level!!! The bacon and grilled cheese on the grilled chicken really made it amazing. Whenever we visit my kid in Texas this place is a favorite stop. It overlooks the Gruene River and has other little historical areas. The building itself is an old barn and the decor is rustic and tasteful. The portions are big , I had the Chicken salad club and I only ate half. Hubby had crispy pork and he ate it all. My daughter had the chicken salad sandwich which she thoroughly enjoyed. My granddaughter had a grilled cheese sandwich along with fries and she liked it. I had the chicken fried chicken and it was very good. It came with corn and mashed potatoes. I don't understand why they put the chicken fried chicken on top of the mashed potatoes and corn but they do. Really nice venue and great service. The food was reasonably priced but I think we may have hit them on an off night. While we loved the appetizer Trifecta the meal just had other problems. My wife's steak was overdone but the manager replaced it quickly. The risotto or rice or whatever came with the bacon wrapped shrimp brochettes was not good and the shrimp was a little small but there were three skewers. The creme brûlée was just too burnt. My brother in law did not like one of his sides as well but I do not remember what it was. This place could easily get a 5 star with a little effort. read more
