Allow me to start by saying I was nervous. Since the COVID shutdowns I feel good quality has plummeted. Because of that I don't really go out and eat, especially, to places in highly tourist areas, 9 times out of 10 you can expect, almost without exception for the food to taste generic despite at ambiance and visual appeal of the place. Tack on to that, I hate over paying for anything I can do better at home. And I'm pretty good in a kitchen. So with great reluctance I agreed to dinner at the Gruene River Grill. Like many places in a tourist trap the ambiance was good, nailed It. But I expected it. The service was good, as it often is. Unfortunately in a touristy area I don't give restaurants credit for those two pieces. I ordered the pork chaps and my wife ordered the pork medallions. They arrived at the table and immediately I began to realize my negative expectations were being challenged. The food was hot, not warm, hot. The plate visual was beautiful. Portion size, easily for two, at least the pork chops. I was sure this is where the positive experience would end. Then I took a bite. Negative expectations defied! I make a damn good smoked bone in pork chop, but this made mine seem like second hand at best. This was THE BEST pork chop I had ever had. I don't think I talked for the rest of the meal. Delicious! Beautiful. Handled with care. Did I say delicious. Did I say it was better than any other pork chop I had ever had? In case you missed it. Title: Definitely Not Their Best Night I've eaten here at least four or five times and have always been impressed with the food. It's a casual, family-style environment, including the bar area, which is essentially one large communal table where anyone can grab an open seat. Unfortunately, today was completely different. The moment I opened the front door, I noticed a strong gas-like odor that became more noticeable farther inside. I mentioned it to the staff and was told a manager attributed the smell to being near sewage. That explanation didn't make much sense to me considering I've eaten here several times, they haven't relocated, and I've never smelled anything like it before. I stayed, but then my soup arrived cold and my made-to-order tacos were also cold. I eventually took my food to go. The waitress herself was pleasant, and I still tipped her 30% because these issues weren't necessarily hers to control. I've had enough good experiences here that I wouldn't write the restaurant off based on one bad visit, but between the unusual odor and cold food, this was definitely not the experience I've come to expect. read more

Stopped into Greune River Grill for dinner with my wife and a girlfriend for dinner, drinks and to catch up as she just arrived in town. It was a nice looking restaurant as we walked in. We ordered a round of drinks and some fried calamari as an appetizer. After a while, we settled on our entrees, my wife ordered the Fish Tacos, our girlfriend, the Grilled Chicken Piccata and I went with the Country Fried Steak. All three meals were absolutely delicious and well presented and we enjoyed our meal. Our server was good, but not outstanding. We really enjoyed Greune River Grill and the atmosphere it presented and overall has a good experience here and will definitely return to try some other things on the menu. read more

The first time we went to Gruene River Grill, it was purely by luck of them having space to seat 3 people and having steak (requirement of my in law while visiting Texas). My partner and I have now been back twice bringing different family members and each time have been so delighted by how good the steaks are and the service! It's a fairly large size restaurant but you can see the servers are constantly moving around and helping each others tables out. They are extremely efficient and the guest experience does not lack as a result. We will happily be back and continue bringing friends and family to this hidden gem! read more

Beautiful place to be. The ambiance is pretty amazing. I was delayed in reviewing the place but the memories of my experience stayed with me that I could clearly share. We had light breakfast so coming here for an early lunch is not a good timing. We ended up trying their soup and appetizers on today's visit. Descent amount and pleasurable taste. I liked everything from this place, ambience, food, drinks, views and the building (although I did a little research and it's not really an old building, but it was made to resemble the architecture of the original buildings around it). Of course the star has to be the food and it didn't disappoint, every bite was delicious. The staff were quick and super friendly. This is a solid choice in Gruene, with good food, nice views, and a decent parking situation. It's a better choice during the summer because of the abundance of indoor, air conditioned seating. Chicken Fried Steak, Enchiladas, and Catfish have all been enjoyable, and they have a decent kids menu that my kids will actually eat from. This isn't a "wow" experience, but a pleasant one for sure. read more

My son, daughter-in-law, dad, and I recently celebrated my birthday at Gruene River Grill on a busy Friday night. We arrived starving, so we really appreciated that our 7:30 reservation was honored right on time and that our server was attentive and efficient. For dinner, my dad ordered the fish and chips with added shrimp, my daughter-in-law and I both chose the grilled chicken piccata, and my son had the balsamic ribeye. Christmas Eve lunch and a great choice! This was an excellent place to stop, and our server, Avery, was an absolute delight--friendly, attentive, and on top of everything from start to finish. We kicked things off with the calamari, which turned out to be a fantastic appetizer. In fact, it was so good we had to ask for extra dipping sauce because the first one disappeared almost immediately. I ordered the lunch schnitzel--WOW. It covered the entire plate and was cooked perfectly. Crispy, tender, and exactly what I was hoping for. My wife went with the chicken fried steak. The only downside for her was the gravy, which seemed a bit "off" and possibly a little too spicy for her taste. We grabbed a slice of carrot cake to go, and unfortunately that was the one miss of the meal. It just didn't live up to the rest of the experience. That said, I was very impressed overall with the restaurant, especially the festive Christmas ambiance. If I'm ever staying local again, this is definitely a place I'd revisit. read more

Food was exceptionally disappointing. Chips that came with the artichoke dip were thick, greasy and tasted too salty and corn-y. The burger was overly seasoned, and they are "not allowed" to cook to medium-rare, so what I received was a well-done, hard and chewy piece of meat, covered in a greasy, toasted bun and salty bacon and cheese. The French fries were also overly seasoned and the only way I could get past the weird taste was to put a lot of ketchup on each bite. The only saving grace was the iced tea and the mashed potatoes. Overall, the restaurant is a crowded tourist trap. Do NOT go for the food. Have some drinks to bear the bad taste. read more

Gruene River Grill never disappoints, we like to sit close to the window area that overlooks the Guadalupe River, very nice! The service that evening was very good. And the chicken Guadalupe was perfect. I wish I had taken a better picture after I cut into it! First timers, and it did not disappoint. Our server Patty was awesome. The others reviews about them being really attentive about keep your drinks filled is true. We got the shrimp wontons appetizer, jalapeno madarin pork chops, & Salmon. Dessert, creme brulee for dessert. Shrimp wontons were OK, they look big but they wrap a lot of excess wonton wrapper around a shrimp so it was really tough/chewy. Salmon, 4/5, kind of bland. Pork Chop was our favorite, 4.5/5 Creme brulee 5/5 We were torn when she said the Ribeye was their main star of the menu so we'll have to come back for that. We used to come here years ago, I'm glad we returned and the food was fantastic! The tri-fecta dip was huge and the guacamole was the star. The calamari was soft and good breading on it. This wasn't the best place we visited during our trip, but it was one of the few restaurants accepting reservations, which we appreciated. The ambiance is beautiful, and the service was good, but the food itself was fairly mediocre. The Spinach Artichoke Dip wasn't worth the price in our opinion. It came with a basket of crushed tortilla chips and a relatively small portion of dip, and it was a bit too salty. I can only fully speak on the dish I ordered -- the Fish & Chips. The fish itself was good, but the batter didn't adhere well and separated from the fish. The fries were decent, but nothing particularly memorable. My husband ordered the Gorgonzola Burger and wasn't very impressed with it either. Overall, while the atmosphere and service were enjoyable, the food didn't quite live up to expectations. read more

We took a ride down to Gruene and decided to eat at the River Grill. The food and the service were amazing. We ordered an appetizer that is called the Trifecta a trio of salsa, guacamole, and cheese dip that comes with tortilla chips and actually it's kind of a meal. My dining partner ordered the spicy chicken sandwich and asked if they could make it not spicy and they accommodated. She said it was excellent. I ordered the chicken fried steak again excellent. Since the appetizer was a large portion, obviously we had some of the mains to take home. We also decided to take home blackberry cobbler and since we had a long ride, we just ordered it without the ice cream. Here we go again excellent. I did not catch the name of our server. I stopped by The Gruene River Grill for a late lunch around 1:15. What stands out to me upon entering is the atmosphere and location of the restaurant that generate a feeling of intentional and above class dining, unfortunately this would not be the case. When I had entered the waiting area to be seated no one or indication of seating sense was apparent. Rather 10mins later, I had settled on the idea that I should seat myself to an empty table along side the rest of the sparsely populated tables of the river view. I again must've had my magic cloak on and wasn't greeted till about 15mins later by the sections server. The attitude of the staff was reluctant and rushed, i had never been here and neither a recommendation or direction of menu was given, nevertheless i made my order for a water and the lunch special of queso chicken and rice. The food had received me very fast, which for a lunch special is expected but not nearly as fast as this. My plates presentation was adequate and welcoming but the compliments end there, the queso was generic with the consistency of hardening glue. The chicken was dry, tough and seasonless all the same of the rice beneath it, along side never getting a touch back on my food/experience the only redeeming touch was my water that was cold. read more
