Very burnt fried chicken
Kristin P.

I have been to this restaurant several times before and it has always been one of my favorites. The drinks were amazing and the food was consistently great. Last night I finally brought my husband to try it after hyping it up for so long, and unfortunately it was a huge disappointment. Things have definitely changed. I was really looking forward to the chicken fried chicken, only to find out they were completely out of mashed potatoes. For a place known for chicken, that was surprising. So I ended up just sharing some of my husband's meal and our appetizer. The cornbread has always been something I rave about, especially with their hot honey. This time it came out dry, and the hot honey had no heat at all. It just was not the same. My husband's fried chicken was honestly the worst part. It was burnt, with a layer of black under the breading, and tasted like it had been overcooked to the point of being charred. There is no way the kitchen did not see how dark it was before serving it. That said, his sides were still great, so at least part of the meal was enjoyable. Our friend's chicken sandwich was not terrible, but it did not taste fresh like it used to. It felt more like something frozen and heavily breaded instead of the quality we had experienced before. One positive was the service. Our server was wonderful, and the rest of the staff was kind and attentive as well. I accidentally spilled my drink right after it arrived, and they were quick and gracious to replace it even though it was completely my fault. That was very much appreciated. The other issue that really took away from the experience was the atmosphere. Halfway through our meal, a large group of adults sat in the courtyard and had their children sit separately at a table right next to us, while their parents remained in another section of the patio. The kids were clearly having fun and playing games, which is great, but they were also very loud and screaming just a foot away from our table while their parents enjoyed quiet drinks elsewhere. There were completely open sections of the patio farther away where they could have sat, so it was frustrating that they were placed right next to the only other table of adults trying to enjoy a night out. It ended up being very disruptive and took away from what we had hoped would be a relaxing evening. Overall, I was really disappointed. This used to be a place I highly recommended, but after this visit it feels like the quality and attention to detail have slipped. I truly hope they can get back to what made them so great before.

This was our first time trying this restaurant in Gruene. There were 4 of us and we were seated right away at 7:00 PM on a Sunday evening. They are decorated country chic with chicken paintings all around. We started with the Southern bread basket that had both biscuits and cornbread. We also had a couple of craft cocktails. For dinner I ordered Cristina's chicken which was accompanied by smashed potatoes and fresh sauteed veggies. I really enjoyed the dish. My husband had the Nashville hot chicken sandwich, and said it was good. We'll definitely return.

Strawberry Champagne Margarita

Absolutely delicious, fantastic food! A friend and I met for brunch and the service was amazing! We each had the strawberry champagne margarita and it was so delicious, not over sweet, a packed a punch! We intended to have 2 each but had to stick with one in order to function afterwards. I had the CFC Biscuit Benedict and you can customize it with spicy chicken or hot honey. I got the hot honey and it was perfect! It was so delicious I don't leave a morsel behind. My friend and I shared the salted caramel brownie for my birthday, and that was also delicious. I can't wait to come back here and this says a lot since I'm not big of fried chicken. Theirs is fried to perfection (soft on the inside and just crunchy enough on the outside). You're seriously missing out!

The Birdhouse is truly one of a kind -- their chicken seasoning is unmatched. Any time we have family visiting from out of town, this is the first place we bring them to show off how delicious and unique our area is. We never skip the fried pickles, and their Bacon Jam Chicken Sandwich is honestly one of the best things I've ever had. Absolute must-try! They also run great specials, like half-price margaritas on certain days and other fun deals that make it even better. If you haven't been yet, go -- you'll be obsessed just like we are!

The Christina's Chicken was delicious! The sauce was creamy and the cranberries added the sweetness. The service was great always enjoy the atmosphere and music. The specialty drink was absolutely fantastic!

We made reservations here for Mother's Day about a week in advance (over the phone, they do have it online as well) which I was so grateful for because Gruene doesn't have many restaurants and they don't all accept reservations. Major points to birdhouse ! We were seated right away - and even early! Our waitress was quick and attentive with our large party (I only wish I knew her name!) We had a few appetizers- *queso fries : unfortunately, very little to no queso on these so we had to ask for a side of queso to put on top. The queso was amazing. the fries really needed more of it and they were delish. *poblano corn fritters : omg, the hot honey that comes with this for dipping I REPEAT do not skip this! In fact go ahead and drizzle it alllll over them fritters!!! No need for the ranch. They were hot and delicious. They could've used more corn sweetness flavor on the inside but overall, I give it a 7/10 *deviled eggs-: delicious. I wish it came with 10 instead of 5 so sharing didn't hurt me so much. LOL drinks for the moms- Peach basil smash : good, but something was missing. Loved the basil sugar rim! Spicy marg: should've had two of these. My MIL and I devoured them. 5/5 meals for the table- They do serve brunch sat & sun 10am-3pm, along with their regular menu. Honey butter chicken biscuits w/ cheesy grits- I asked for mine to come with hot honey but the waitress said it already does. You can change what kind of sauce you want as well, there's a few options. I asked for extra hot honey on the side. Trust me . You need this. 3.5/5 (the biscuit was a bit too crumbly and breading on chicken was so thick I'm not sure how much chicken there was .. but great flavoring) Hot honey sandwich w/fries - my husband had this and said it was good but not amazing. Fries lacked flavor & not enough actual chicken (too much breading) and not enough hot honey. 2/5 I'm not sure what my MIL had but she said her mashed potatoes were ice cold. She was really bummed out and rightfully so. We made reservations and the crowd was low when we got there but still waited an hour for food and hers definitely wasn't fresh. The appetizers and drinks were great. But at some point I think the kitchen couldn't keep up. It's a small restaurant therefore probably even smaller kitchen. Maybe there's room for an expansion because this place has sooo much potential in Gruene! I'd definitely go back.

If you like white meat. I prefer all dark meat and there's no option to select. For me I personally didn't care for it.

I knew from the moment I walked in that I was going to love it, and it quickly became my favorite wine bar...so much so that I visited two nights in a row! The wine selection is excellent and the service is every bit as impressive. You can tell the owners poured their hearts into every last detail. The décor is beautiful, but the ambiance really has to be experienced to understand just how special this place is. It's comfortable, intimate and full of character without feeling pretentious. Darrell, one of the owners, made the experience even more memorable with his captivating stories behind the wines. At one point, he even picked up a guitar and sang for a group of ladies, which was such a special moment and perfectly captured the charm of this place. My work trips anywhere within an hour of New Braunfels just became a lot more enjoyable! Thank you to Darrell and the entire staff for creating such a magical place. I absolutely cannot wait to come back!

We are dying to come back here for one of their many events and tastings. Memberships available, but also a great place to just come and hang out! We would be here more if we weren't quite so far away.

Because of that I don't really go out and eat, especially, to places in highly tourist areas, 9 times out of 10 you can expect, almost without exception for the food to taste generic despite at ambiance and visual appeal of the place. Tack on to that, I hate over paying for anything I can do better at home. And I'm pretty good in a kitchen. So with great reluctance I agreed to dinner at the Gruene River Grill. Like many places in a tourist trap the ambiance was good, nailed It. But I expected it. The service was good, as it often is. Unfortunately in a touristy area I don't give restaurants credit for those two pieces. I ordered the pork chaps and my wife ordered the pork medallions. They arrived at the table and immediately I began to realize my negative expectations were being challenged. The food was hot, not warm, hot. The plate visual was beautiful. Portion size, easily for two, at least the pork chops. I was sure this is where the positive experience would end. Then I took a bite. Negative expectations defied! I make a damn good smoked bone in pork chop, but this made mine seem like second hand at best. This was THE BEST pork chop I had ever had. I don't think I talked for the rest of the meal. Delicious! Beautiful. Handled with care. Did I say delicious. Did I say it was better than any other pork chop I had ever had? In case you missed it. It was the BEST pork chop I'd ever had and I just wanted to say, "thank you" to the GRG for such a welcomed and unexpected surprise! (My wife felt the same about her order)

Title: Definitely Not Their Best Night…read more I've eaten here at least four or five times and have always been impressed with the food. It's a casual, family-style environment, including the bar area, which is essentially one large communal table where anyone can grab an open seat. Unfortunately, today was completely different. The moment I opened the front door, I noticed a strong gas-like odor that became more noticeable farther inside. I mentioned it to the staff and was told a manager attributed the smell to being near sewage. That explanation didn't make much sense to me considering I've eaten here several times, they haven't relocated, and I've never smelled anything like it before. I stayed, but then my soup arrived cold and my made-to-order tacos were also cold. I eventually took my food to go. The waitress herself was pleasant, and I still tipped her 30% because these issues weren't necessarily hers to control. I've had enough good experiences here that I wouldn't write the restaurant off based on one bad visit, but between the unusual odor and cold food, this was definitely not the experience I've come to expect.
