The manager with black hair and wearing a white shirt looked over several times and not once did she acknowledge us. This visit was rude and unacceptable. We may or not be back. We brought in a party of 20 (with separate checks), which is challenging for some restaurants. The staff were completely accommodating and rearranged tables to fit our group, and allowed us to decorate. The food was good, brussel sprouts were super yummy. I ordered the Islander Salad with chicken. It was tasty, but the chicken was overcooked/rubbery. (I got the Cellar Cottage Pie on a previous visit and it was a large, flavorful portion... Kamryn was our waitress today and she was very friendly and did an excellent job taking care of us. We had the brussels sprouts as an appetizer with the bacon tomato add on. EXCELLENT! One of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time. My fiancé got the seasonal prime rib fried steak and it had soooo much flavor. I had the Brazilian French toast and even though the toast was amazing "naked", that hot buttered rum sauce was to die for! The mimosas had just the right amount of OJ (a drop!) and the service was fast and friendly. Oh and get the beer bread and honey butter! They grill it and it's melt in your mouth good!!! This place looks amazing from the outside but don't let that fool you. To start off the place was so hot. No AC going and it was April, no clue what they're going to do when June or July Rolls around. The service was some of the worst I've ever experienced. The server was trying so hard to be "Cute" that she forgot multiple thing's multiple times. The food has NO FLAVOR. Everything needed pepper and salt just to taste it, this is coming from a table of 5 and we all said the same thing. Prices are OUTRAGEOUS for the quality you get. Definitely better off going to a Dennys for the price. Would never recommend and will not be going back. read more

If you have spent some quality time with New Braunfels, you may know of The Smokehouse. This is not that place. The Root Cellar Cafe is what would happen if Oma had attended culinary school. The entire scene oozes cozy, but also fresh. It is a must-try, even if only for appetizers and drinks. The atmosphere is homey, but modern at the same time. Everything, the lighting, decor, paintings, even the coffee mugs, give Oma's haus vibes. It is difficult to simply settle on one item from the beautifully constructed, eye-catching menu. The mouth-watering verbiage is so decedent, it is so hard to choose. As it was morning-ish when I visited, I decided on the chicken and waffles. The Belgian waffles were so well made, I couldn't devour them fast enough. Crisp and golden on the outside, yet gloriously fluffy inside. Truly, a perfect waffle. A very sexy portion of compound butter was piled atop my perfectly-fried chicken. An excellently-created, beautifully-plated meal. If you are a caffeine addict, as most of us are, the coffee is an absolute must-have. Rich, strong, and bold (like a good man). The servers were not over-run, as most of them are in the area, which makes my once-a-server heart so glad to see. They do a lovely job of accommodating guests in a timely manner, and are not your run-of-the mill, half-hearted servers. They have a substance and genuineness unlike I have seen in a while. We ate dinner at the Root Cellar in New Braunfels and couldn't be more disappointed. My Caesar Salad was just edible. Lettuce nearly stale, not cool and crispy at all. The chicken came from the freezer, rubbery and pretty tasteless. My wife enjoyed her beet & goat cheese salad. We love fried Brussels Sprouts and ordered that as well. What can I say, they ranged in size from small walnut to more than golf ball, which were nearly raw while the smallest were very nice. I may try them again, but probably won't as we are spoiled for choice here in New Braunfels. BTW, La Cosecha has a stupendous Caesar Salad. read more

We arrived for brunch as a party of two. He ordered chicken and waffles with a side of biscuits and gravy and a Jack the Fire Dog Bloody Mary . I ordered the Migas with a side of avocado toast and bacon. 1. Chicken and Waffles - Food was decent. No complaints but nothing that stands out. Very uneventful and the field greens were unnecessary. The food flavor is not elevated and the greens do not hide that. 2. Biscuits and Gravy - Biscuit has dense and hard, gravy thick and Ice cold and very gel like. The jalapeño flavor was there but inedible. 3. Side of bacon - Bacon was close to raw. 4. Jack the Fire dog was good, nice flavor. 5. Avocado toast - heavy coverage of everything bagel seasoning which I love but the avocado itself was not seasoned and almost bitter. The greens again were unnecessary. 6. The Migas - oh how I wanted these to be delicious. After picking out a half bag of dry stale tortilla chips, the remaining bowl was unseasoned with what appeared to be a tiny bit of egg, lots of black beans and a sprinkle of cheese. I could not find Pico at all. They served a tiny lime wedge and salsa. It needed both to provide any sort of flavor. The restaurant was cute and clean. There was plenty of help and the waitress was attentive to refills. The kitchen needs a revamp. The concept to elevate food favorites is good but not well executed. We will not return. read more

The original location in San Marcos is amazing and I was so excited when the NB location opened. We've been twice and both times despite being only half full the service is very slow. The staff (minus the hostess- who barely spoke or made eye contact) are very nice but it took so long to get drinks, food, and our check that we were getting frustrated. The atmosphere echos all sounds and the first time we went there was a large group in the corner that was so loud the entire restaurant echoed their voices and made it difficult to have a conversation at our own table. Heard about this new restaurant in town. Went there to celebrate a birthday and was disappointed. The queso dip was just a blob of cold cheese dumped in a bowl. The shrimp pasta dish was warm and did not have any flavor. Guess the MGR was not concerned about the issues that he/she didn't think it was important to speak to us regarding this substandard quality in the lunch. The service was slow. It took them an hour to make our food. Also my kid ordered chicken tenders and French fries(they were out of fries) she got chicken and waffles. The chicken was tough and stringy. It was awful my husband I tried it. I understand this is a small independent business but it seems like the management is lacking. Food: fried eggs were cooked to order, however they were sprinkled with a seasoning containing garlic/onion; no indication of that type of seasoning was on the build your own' menu - garlic/onion powder/salts are not good on fried eggs! Frittata was burned on the bottom; it was replaced, but it was overcooked/very dry and almost tasteless. Manager did comp this. Service: disappointing - we were seated by the hostess and given menus. Two additional large parties of 7 plus each were seated after us but served before we were. We finally got up and asked for a server to at least bring water and coffee and take our order. When the server finally came, she said that no one had told her that customers had been seated at her table. Our dinner for 4 was great! All 4 of us ordered different entrees (bourbon chicken, salmon, roast beef, shoestring chicken) and we all agreed the food was delicious. Upon arriving we were notified they were short staffed and to please be patient, but we had an attentive server and good service. First Yelp review in, well, ever. My wife and I ate breakfast at the San Marcos location a couple of weeks ago and have been looking forward to the NB location opening. In short, the new Root Cellar is outstanding in every way! Food, service, ambience all were great. We ate Breakfast on a Wednesday morning which could become a habit. I had the "Savory" Waffle, essentially Chicken and Waffle. The chicken component was a fried boneless, skinless, chicken thigh; breading had great texture and was perfectly seasoned. Thigh was ideally juicy. Waffle and chicken were topped with a lovely honey butter and come, your choice, drizzled with sriracha honey or with the sriracha honey on the side (my choice), plus Maple Syrup (on request). This dish was a) one of the 5 best breakfasts I've ever had and b) the single best chicken and waffle dish I've ever had. Perfect balance of flavor (spicy and sweet), and texture (crunchy chicken and fluffy waffle). My wife had the "Rhea" Breakfast Sandwich (fried egg, grilled pickles and onions on Texas Toast) and loved it! It came with Homestyle potatoes which, again, were perfectly realized: crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, with lots of salt and pepper. I also had a side of the taters, which was total overkill. Not sorry! Dinner menu looks very inviting and surprisingly varied in selection. Looking forward to that! To prove that I'm not a shill for the restaurant, I'll throw in that the cathedral ceiling make it pretty echoey in the dining room. Some soft hangings and maybe carpet squares under the tabletops might help. The NB Root Cellar just opened and, hence, is making a maximum effort with very friendly service. We had the opportunity to chat with the both Chef and the co-Owner! Waitstaff was attentive and very enthusiastic. Owner and staff have set a really high bar which they'll have to work hard to maintain. My guess is that this won't be a problem. The service was very nice and the decor was great. The food was a different experience. We went on Tuesday at noon. I ordered the shrimp and grits and it wasn't anything like the pictures I've seen. The grits were very thin with no flavor, not as many shrimp, little bit of chorizo, and the whole dish was drenched in like a cinnamon honey sauce that was very overwhelming. No other seasoning on it either. The bacon seemed barely cooked. The restaurant is still new and figuring things out and I hope further development happens. read more

Maybe we were too early since the opening, but lots of work is needed here. While the manager/host was 'discussing' with someone at the head of the line whether they had made a reservation or not, the line behind us was forming up outside. All the manager had to say was, "I'm sorry, we made a mistake. You're here, let's get you seated." Instead the conversation went on for over 5 minutes. Ordered appetizer and drinks right off the bat. We finished our appetizer before our drink order arrived. The host was also working the bar, which was part of the problem. I ordered the steak, which was delivered with no steak knife which was sorely needed. At least my date's meal was okay, as she put it. We will give it one more try in a couple of months. read more

If you're looking for an open and honest review from someone who is a foodie, eats at every restaurant he can, and is as blunt and honest as they come. Then read on. I am from Texas, born an raised. I was raised with manners and southern hospitality. 1st and foremost, the staff was amazing, polite and super attentive. The atmosphere was fantastic. I opted to eat at the bar with my wife and we spoke with the bartender whom was also our server. Chicken and Waffles, Meatloaf, breakfast burrito, chiliquiles, and even the mixed drinks at the bar were 10 out of 10. Hands down. They have local Central Texas beers on tap as well! Please do not read or pay any attention to any of the negative comments from others. They are all quick to add negative remarks to places whom do not serve them to their nose in the air expectations and are the ones that think and feel they should be the center of attention. The laid back, fun, caring, and loving atmosphere with fantastic food is what this place offers. I definitely will be back not just for the food, but the conversations with the staff as well. We had heard good things about the San Marcos location and wanted to try it but parking there is impossible and they were serving only brunch when we went in so we left. We were happy to see the New Braunfels location opening. Closer to us and has a parking lot. About all we can say is "meh". The beer battered asparagus was OK. Not much seasoning and the batter was just OK. My wife got the pasta primavera. Plenty of vegetables but not a lot of flavor. I got the brewhouse burger. Certainly much better burgers in NB for the price. The fries were just frozen steak fries from the bag to the fryer. Service was lackluster, food was uninspired. We won't return. Too bad because we eat out often and live in NB. read more

I'll try and set the record straight for all the prima donna's giving the 3 or less stars for having to "wait", or "my food arrived too fast" or "oh my, the cost", my favorite being "host tried to explain..."! You just won't find a better place to tryout some of the finest food around, but you will wait at peak times given the staff's superb care given to each table, the appetizers do sometimes arrive shortly before the entree "so what!" they're a masterpiece too! For those complaining cost, apparently you've never had fine dinning, this is the finest at a fraction the cost and served by folks with a passion for food, honestly trying to get folks excited about eating out again! As for a host explaining "situations", give me a break, at least she cares, and that's coming from an owner who has inspired his staff to "raise the bar" compared to every other place! My wife and I are so please, above all "THANKFUL" for such a truly awesome spot with the absolute best food hands down! I encourage everyone (except those prima donna's) to give this place a try, it's a truly special place ran by the finest folks in the restaurant industry! Food is a five star restaurant with a comfortable dining room. Service was excellent and food was quite tasty. We had shrimp and cheese grits and my partner had chicken fried ribeye steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. Met the owner as he floated around the room visiting with guest.
