    Caesar Salad (w/out parmesan cheese)
    Shawn V.

Our son and daughter-in-law took us here for dinner. Wow - what a great place. Claire was our server - she was probably one of the top five servers we have ever had - personable; knowledgeable about the menu; her recommendations were spot on and the reasons for her recommendations. We're spot on. She was attentive (but not overly so) and made sure our beverages stayed filled. Top notch service. For appetizers we tried the Chips and Salsa which was Mango, Avocado, Jalapeño, Grapefruit Vinaigrette, Cucumber & Tortilla Chips. When I had my first bite I wasn't sure. By the third, I was hooked - it had a great (and different) flavor that quickly has you wanting more. We also tried the Bistro Poppers which are Shredded Duck, Bacon, Peppers, Mixed Cheese & Sweet Onion Glaze. They were the shape of a cucumber slice and deep fried. The sweet onion glaze made them perfect! We also tried the Bistro Salad (we order the small size) which was: Fresh Greens, Roasted Corn, Pickled Onions, Cucumber, Feta & Tomatoes with a Lemon-Herb Vinaigrette. Very tasty. We also tried the Caesar Salad which was: Romaine Lettuce, House Dressing, Parmesan, Pico & Croutons (my son opted out of the Parmesan). It was great - the pico was amazing - something I've never had on a Caesar Salad but which was really good. We also tried the soup of the day (opted for small size) which was a creamy jalapeño soup with pork. It was probably one of the three best soups I have eaten. The flavor was superb and the texture smooth and creamy. My only regret was ordering the small serving instead of the large! For dinner two of us had the Blackened Salmon which was: Poblano Vinaigrette, Cilantro Lime Rice & Seasonal Veggies. The Salmon was perfect. Crisp and blackened on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. I love Salmon but too many restaurants overcook it A this was perfect. I had the roasted jalapeño cream sauce and it was great. The veggies were squash and zucchini and again, cooked and seasoned perfectly. Fresh and flavorful. I'm not a big rice guy but the Cilantro Lime Rice actually had a very good flavor. We also tried the Stuffed Poblano which came with: Stewed Potatoes, Roasted Corn, Zucchini & Black Beans. Topped with Mixed Cheese & a Roasted Jalapeño Cream Sauce. Served over Cilantro Lime Rice - we also added chicken for a protein. The flavors blended together so well - it was also very good. Finally, we tried the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Breast which came with Roasted Jalapeño Cream, Charred Poblano Mashed Potatoes & Creamed Corn. The chicken was prepared perfectly. The buttermilk fried coating was crispy and not greasy. The creamed corn was very good - it was a bit different than 'traditional' cream corn when it came to the flavor, but it was really good. For dessert, we had the crème brûlée - it was wonderful. The sugar was perfectly caramelized - crunch but not burned - very smooth and creamy. It's made on-site. We also tried the strawberry cheesecake. It wasn't bad but it was probably the least favorite of the entire meal. Again - not bad by any means but nothing spectacular. Finally we tried the strawberry cake which also had strawberry filling and a strawberry cream frosting. It was also very good. We will definitely go back - they change the menu all the time. The food is very fresh and flavorful and it's obvious that great attention is paid to the flavors. If all of the servers are of the same quality as Claire, then the service will always be top notch. This hidden gem as awesome - try them out!

I've been a regular patron here for about 3.5 years. We almost always sit at the bar whether or not we're having dinner. There are many choices on the menu and you can never go wrong with the jalapeño bacon burger. The strawberry fields salad is one of my favorite items. Great Happy Hour from 3 to 6. Service is wonderful at the bar and at table service.

Only picture I took but let it be the one to bring you here !! SO SO SO GOOD! I did not leave a crumb of anything because it was so good! This was their Pecan Crusted Chicken, it came with veggies and potatoes wedges and they were melting in my mouth. I also ordered a Mexican martini which was so good too and when I asked for extra olives they did not disappoint. The server was very kind and attentive and the food came out at a perfect temperature and tasted amazing once again. Very cozy family vibes and definitely a place to check out !

    Special of the day.

We all know how to have fun here on St. Patrick's day! All is well. Great times, lots of laughs at the bar.

Random stop when looking for outdoor dining. Unfortunately everyone else was too so had to dine indoors. Place was nice, clean, friendly staff, not overly loud or crowded. Food was delicious. Did not take long to come out. Everything was flavorful and hot. Recommend if in the area. All dishes pictured were delicious. The artichoke spinach dip is more cream cheese but still tasty.

    Pork tenderloin medallions.

Very accommodating, called to make a reservation an hour before, and they were very obliging. Once there, we're set immediately, and attended to with great wine selection, soup and a great strawberry salad. My husband had a burger and I had the pork tenderloin; we explained our time constraint to meet a class; they understood and kept us on time. Food & service were very good; wish we lived closer, to go back.

Today I had the pleasure of driving up to New Braunfels for lunch to celebrate my beautiful daughter in law, Cat's, birthday. She chose Texas Bistro, since it is a favorite of hers. To be honest, I was a little disappointed because we were going for brunch. When I first went on the website to plan my meal, I really liked the sound of the Greek Chicken Sandwich. I was sad to learn that it would not be available during brunch. I would have to settle for something else. As soon as we were all seated in a very pleasant dining room decorated with Texas art and such, our server, Dalton, came to get our drink orders. He told us only the brunch menu was available and helped us find it in the large book style menus he had given us. Then he was off to get our drinks. I went in with a few options in my head, but ended up ordering something entirely different. Sometimes, even when I have a plan, I never know what I will be hungry for until the minute I order. This time, I switched to Southside Shrimp. The menu described it as "7 Blackened Shrimp with Tomatoes, Mushrooms & Spinach over Cilantro-Lime Rice. Topped with a Poached Egg & Chorizo-Hollandaise". Y'all... I have never been served anything that was so close to the menu description. It was really a pretty plate, as were all of our choices. The shrimp were cooked absolutely perfectly. Every element of the dish played well with the others. I was extremely satisfied. The entire lunch experience was great. I understand why Cat likes this place so much. The food was delicious. Our server was awesome. The dining room was pleasant. There is just nothing bad to say.

And I'll say right up front, the food was very good. From a short stack of pancakes (still huge) with a side of sausage links to the avocado toast with eggs and a side of bacon, the food was very good quality and flavor. What was disappointing was that the service was lacking. The hostess wasn't busy as we walked in but seemed preoccupied with wiping menus instead of acknowledging our party. We finally said "hello" and then were acknowledged and seated but no real greeting or enthusiasm. Similar behavior from our waitress. No niceties, just "do you want something to drink". When our coffee was delivered we asked for water and they were promptly delivered without any words but no straws. Maybe water isn't automatic here and maybe straws aren't either? Later, I flagged down the waitress to ask for straws and we got 4 straws --- for 2 persons ... ok. Again the food was great but my coffee cup sat empty from early on, needing a refill and I finally had to ask for it. I hope this isn't the norm.. and it wasn't terrible, but for such good food, you'd hope the service would match.

Last night I finally brought my husband to try it after hyping it up for so long, and unfortunately it was a huge disappointment. Things have definitely changed. I was really looking forward to the chicken fried chicken, only to find out they were completely out of mashed potatoes. For a place known for chicken, that was surprising. So I ended up just sharing some of my husband's meal and our appetizer. The cornbread has always been something I rave about, especially with their hot honey. This time it came out dry, and the hot honey had no heat at all. It just was not the same. My husband's fried chicken was honestly the worst part. It was burnt, with a layer of black under the breading, and tasted like it had been overcooked to the point of being charred. There is no way the kitchen did not see how dark it was before serving it. That said, his sides were still great, so at least part of the meal was enjoyable. Our friend's chicken sandwich was not terrible, but it did not taste fresh like it used to. It felt more like something frozen and heavily breaded instead of the quality we had experienced before. One positive was the service. Our server was wonderful, and the rest of the staff was kind and attentive as well. I accidentally spilled my drink right after it arrived, and they were quick and gracious to replace it even though it was completely my fault. That was very much appreciated. The other issue that really took away from the experience was the atmosphere. Halfway through our meal, a large group of adults sat in the courtyard and had their children sit separately at a table right next to us, while their parents remained in another section of the patio. The kids were clearly having fun and playing games, which is great, but they were also very loud and screaming just a foot away from our table while their parents enjoyed quiet drinks elsewhere. There were completely open sections of the patio farther away where they could have sat, so it was frustrating that they were placed right next to the only other table of adults trying to enjoy a night out. It ended up being very disruptive and took away from what we had hoped would be a relaxing evening. Overall, I was really disappointed. This used to be a place I highly recommended, but after this visit it feels like the quality and attention to detail have slipped. I truly hope they can get back to what made them so great before.

The Gruene Door did not disappoint! The drinks, appetizers, salad and main courses were all phenomenal with no exceptions. As someone with decades of food service experience, it's rare that I don't have something that I would change. But the service and food were both fantastic. The music was lively but not overbearing and the patio was calm. Our waiter was attentive, but not overly so; so we felt our needs were met without being hovered over. If I were to suggest anything, it might be nice to have candles on the tables, and maybe even a fire in the outdoor fireplace even though it wouldn't have needed for heat; just ambiance. Also the windows are tinted so darkly that initially I was afraid the restaurant was closed, so maybe consider an illuminated open sign facing the main road. But this place was great! We'll be back!

Table for 1, Occasion: 70th Birthday, and really looking forward to it since I skipped breakfast. The food was on point, as expected, BUT: The service from waitress LB went from dismal to downright baddd, from start to finish. It took her several minutes to approach my table. Her appearance matched her skills. Like she had just got out of bed, a real mess. She had poor communication skills, very loud, rushed, abrupt. Not a shred of finesse, which does not match the vibe of this nice restaurant. The lunch crowd was gone, there were 1, 2, then 3 tables filled in a large room that had ~10+ empty tables. But this poor thing ran frantically around and from room to room like it was a packed Saturday night. And there was a second waiter also assigned to our room. As I waited patiently for my lunch plate, she never once checked in. I wondered if they served bread, crackers, anything. I finally asked another waiter who said he'd tell her to get me their homemade bread. Waited some more, never spoke with her as she zipped by my table doing I have no idea what. She finally brought my lunch plate and still no bread arrived. Well into my entree, she arrived with one small square of delicious bread and butter explaining she had to toast it. Never saw her again throughout my meal. Finished, waited ~10 minutes, and she finally brought the check. Asked me if I wanted to see the dessert menu. I said no thanks. Is it ME? Or when a restaurant KNOWS it's a birthday, don't they at least offer a comped dessert?? Even Dairy Queen offers a small free treat. I worked at DQ in high school, and can confirm that LB wouldn't cut it there. I gave her a gift card and she disappeared for a long while. Returned with my card balance, then loudly asked if I wanted to pay her tip off the gift card. I said yes. LB: "How much?" (Loud) Me: "20%". (I gritted my teeth when I said that because had we not been announcing all this I would have left her maybe $5. She looked at my ticket and loudly said, "I guess that is about $11.63. Is that okay?" I quietly replied okay. She grabbed my card again then had to go get a manager to help her figure out how to charge the card for only tip. Meanwhile, the couple at the table heard everything and when she left the room they gave me a look of empathy and we all shook our heads. LB FINALLY returned and wished me a happy birthday. Bless her heart. How in the world does a nice, reputable restaurant let a server get away with all this? All the restaurant's expense, labor, and best intentions fly out the window when one server is low performance. I will return to The Gruene Door, but only on the condition that I'll be assigned another waiter.

Now that tourist season is over, New Braunfels is back on my areas to eat list. We decided that we would try this on a weekday night. We used one of apps for driving directions to get to this place. That turned out to be the only bad thing about this trip. For whatever reason, it took us on a very circuitous route. If I had known that it was located across the street from Pat's Place, I could have driven straight to it. When we finally arrived, I was not sure it was open. Also, signage was poor, so we didn't see it right away. When we did get into the parking lot, parking was easy, and we were able to get next to the entrance. We walked in and were greeted immediately by the young lady behind the counter. She was very friendly, and finding out it was our first time, she explained the entire process for us. Seeing they had Hatch Chili for the Down the Hatch burger, I knew what I had to have (Have you had Hatch Chili on your burger? Once you try it, you will never go back to typical burgers). My wife ordered the classic burger fixed just like she likes it. We also ordered an order of fries. Our food was made fresh and delivered quickly. The lady that brought our food to the table turned out to be the manager, and she was so nice. In fact, she even gave us a free ice cream for dessert:) Our food was piping hot and made just as we ordered. I took one bite and said I'll definitely be coming back. My wife loved her food too. In addition to the burgers being great, I have to say that the fries might have been the best I've ever had. Seriously! They were just crisp enough, hot, fresh, seasoned well, and nongreasy. After finishing our meal, we went to try the ice cream. The young lady working the ice cream stand was so friendly. She explained how they make their own ice cream and wanted us to try as many samples as we wanted. We decided on the salted caramel as it was so good:) She also told us that they had another location in Gruene, and that we should try it when visiting. Will I return? Definitely - the folks were really friendly, the food was great, and the ice cream for dessert was fantastic.
