Sea Scallops Grenobloise - leeks, jalapeno and capers over beluga lentils $36*
Ellen R.

Rooney's Update - January 2025 Visited Rooney's for my boyfriend's birthday with a party of six. We booked about two weeks in advance with no issues. The place was busy when we arrived, so we grabbed drinks at the bar while waiting about 20 minutes for our table. Rooney's has a cozy, charming atmosphere inside a house in Swillburg. We were seated near the fireplace, which was warm and inviting. We ordered 2 bottles of the pinot noir reasonably priced around $50 a bottle. We shared Parmesan Arancini (ordered 3 plates since 2 balls per plating) to start--delicious! For mains, I had the Sea Scallops Grenobloise (I'm a scallop girly), and my boyfriend had the Wood-Grilled Beef Tenderloin --both were fantastic. Our table also enjoyed the Vegan Casserole, Teres Major Steak, and Beet Salad, all of which were well-executed. Service was a bit slow since it was a busy Saturday night, but nothing unreasonable. We ended with a flourless cake for dessert (extra charge), and the entire restaurant joined in singing for the birthday celebration. Rooney's remains a hidden gem in Rochester--intimate, cozy, and consistently delicious!

A Rochester staple for quality food. Beef tenderloin with whipped potatoes was excellent. Teres major steak was also nice and tender. Scallops were sweet and juicy. The shrimp appetizer was okay. It did not stand out in particular. I also did not care for the cheesecake as it tasted store bought. The ambiance is nice and it is pretty dark inside. Good service.

So I'm looking for a new place for fine dining. Heard from a friend about this place so here is my review. Located in an odd place in a residential neighborhood but hey that's okay. Stepped inside and it felt like I was stepping in a speakeasy. Very old fashion look .. lots of wood , dark but cozy. Bar and several booths on one side and in another room was the restaurant which I headed for. About 10 tables, Linen tablecloths, cozy fireplace yet the room has a very nice atmosphere. Servers were lined up along the wall ready to serve. Started off with a Cocktail which was nicely made. Picked steak for my meal and although the portion size wasn't that great the food was superb. Compliments to the Chef! The atmosphere was right up my alley for fine dining. Will visit again

This is a consistent old-school, upscale hotel type of restaurant with the expected dinner and dessert options

The server was friendly. The bad: they were woefully understaffed. It seems like there was one server for the entire restaurant including two large parties. Ours was one of those parties. Our reservation was at 6:15. We were seated quickly but did not see a server for at least 30 minutes after. It took at least another 30 minutes to get half of our drinks, another 15 to get the other half, and another 30 to get appetizers. When our main dishes came out, some were not very hot, the crab fried rice was missing crab, but the rest of the dishes were good. After appetizers, dinner and dessert we left the restaurant about 2.5 hours after arriving. I'd try this restaurant again because the food and drinks were good but it's probably best to go with a smaller party.

Service was friendly and the weight staff checked on us a lot. I ordered the Caesar salad with french fries the garlic stuffed bread, and we tried to the spiritless cocktails on the menu. The food was delicious and I have no complaints there. However, the spiritless cocktails left a lot to be desired. I would probably come back here again.
