Romancing the Bean romanced me with their excellent coffee. I've been on a little coffee exploration mission this past week and RTB wins best of this highly unscientific project. My go to is a hot breve latte and today's was strong and smooth. The lemon ricotta scone wasn't too shabby either. Lots of flavor and not super sweet. Service was excellent as it was both friendly and efficient. RTB is attractive inside with plenty of comfortable seating. There are tables outside too. I have to say, every time I've come here the vibe has felt off and the staff comes across as pretty unfriendly. I decided to give it another shot a couple of days ago and just ordered a Diet Coke. After paying, I stood at the counter waiting, only to realize the cans were actually by the door and no one mentioned it, instead just looked at me strangely. I ended up standing there awkwardly for a couple of minutes before having to ask for a cup of ice as well. I really want to like this place, but it just doesn't feel welcoming. The food here is delicious. The service is very kind and the ambiance is that of creatives. I had the pleasure of coming here and having the French toast. It was absolutely delicious. The blueberries and texture of the toast were phenomenal. We also had the quinoa bowl which was tasty too. This place is worthy of our patronage and those outside of the area looking for a great cafe should come here. There is a lot I LIKE about Romancing the Bean: - The space is airy and comfortable - The servers are pleasant and helpful - The crowd is varied and often interesting. What don't I like? The coffee. More often than not. Don't get me wrong - the coffee itself is good enough. The problem is, more often than not, it's lukewarm, or so near to it that once you add cream it is. Why, I don't understand. I got to numerous cafes in the Valley: Giorla, Aroma, Harvest Moon, La Rochelle, Superba, Ugly Mug... You get the idea. There are a lot of them. And it's pretty much a given that when you order the coffee it will be HOT. Why can't Romancing the Bean consisently provide hot coffee? Can't imagine. But for someone who really does go to a coffee shop for the coffee, it's frustrating to have to keep asking them to remake your cup (which sometimes they will, awkward if this means remaking a whole urn, or sometimes they'll just give you a cup from the other roast, so you get a hot cup of coffee, but it's either too strong or too weak, depending on what you originally ordered.) Should you go there? Well, there are a lot of good reasons to do so - nice people, nice ambiance, lively location. And in fairness, many people just want a cozy place to hang out. But if a nice hot cup of coffee is high on your priorities, maybe not so much. read more

Enjoyed a lovely latte and got the kale salad with chicken. The salad was 23 dollars for cold unseasoned chicken and kale and a few cranberries and pistachios. Way too expensive for what it was. Would be so easy to elevate it to match the price. The service was quick. You just order at the counter so you don't have a lot of interaction with the employees. The ambiance is great! The service is friendly! Their baked goods are delicious! Their coffee is amazing! However, their made-in-house food is nothing to write home about. It's edible but does sometimes lack flavor and is overpriced for what you get. I will continue to go there, as I do enjoy my time when I am there. Their Wi-Fi is nothing to be desired. It's spotty at best. Although, I do see many customers there with laptops, working. (probably with their own hotspots in tow.) I will also continue to try items on their menu. Came here on a Saturday morning at 9 am and it was surprisingly wasn't as busy as I thought; come 11 am, that's when I noticed the crowd showing up! Very spacious place inside, huge menu that takes over the wall behind the register. I wish they had more outdoor seating, it's limited and we were lucky to get a table! LOTS of seating inside though. I got an Iced Oat Latte and a blueberry scone. Oat latte was perfect and the blueberry scone, mmmm! I think it may have been the best scone I've had! My friend got their quiche that she was raving about; it didn't disappoint! I can't wait to come back and try their actual menu along with more baked goods! After a few years of not being able to walk to gaze at the fine selections, and enjoy - I had the time to stroll in, sit, and study. I needed to get out of the house and do my PhD work at Romancing the Bean Cafe : ) Unfortunately, after I ordered + a digital tip, then receiving my coffee and nut bar, the guy left the register without handing me my receipt. (Chk # 140) I was left at the counter looking like an idiot. Finally, a kind young lady asked to help me. I got my receipt, sat for a while, then left. TLDR: Noisy, difficult wifi experience, 90-minute seating limit, unwrapped straws, comfortably uncomfortable - where do I stop? Pros: Staff were available and ready to help - though they didn't seem to enjoy being there. - - - - - - I visited Romancing the Bean Cafe after I didn't want to tango with the wait time of Porto's. I was served almost instantly on a Saturday afternoon - yay! - and there weren't too many people. I ordered my usual iced latte, and I have to admit it's quite bitter, and it was a solid reminder of the burnt bits whenever my feet step into the kitchen and my hands are on the stovetop. The stars for the drink are also unwrapped, so if are a straw-sipper, I would recommend bringing your own. The ambiance itself is interesting. Tables line the walls and edges, and there is a quite a bit of standing space. In contrast, sitting at the tables is a cramped experience. I visit cafes on the edges of LA are a nice escape from the busier, noisier life in the city, and I have to admit that I didn't get that here even with noise cancelling headphones. The most interesting and useful decor here was the silver-rimmed black-and-white clock that blends into the wall, so you're always aware of the 90-minute limit seating policy. WiFi? It's available, but the password is a synonym for "relax" and finding the WiFi connection is anything but that. They have enough "Romancing the Bean" connections to switch between one for every day of the week! read more

We love this place and usually come here to read on the weekends. We love that they have a beautiful public restroom, we love that there's always a table no matter how busy and we love the food here. When we initially visited for the first time it was solely for coffee and weren't too impressed. Coffee here is okay, but they offer a wide variety of drink options. But the sandwiches here are TOO good. Food is such good quality, tastes fresh, lots of bold and strong flavors. I've never had a chicken curry sandwich anywhere else and it's GOOD. It is usually very busy especially on weekends and sometimes parking is impossible, but if you can try to stop by. There's also so many baked goods that it's hard to choose from, cakes, pies and cheesecakes are gorgeous. read more

One of the worst coffee shop experiences I've had in years. We came on a Sunday afternoon -- all the regular seats were taken, and the only option left was a narrow bench by the window with no back support. Not exactly the kind of place you want to relax in. We ordered a salmon bagel (asked for it on a croissant), a warmed almond croissant, a cappuccino, and an iced latte. I also asked if they had anything less sweet or not pastry-based -- the staff just stared and offered me a plain croissant. That was their best idea. Despite having salads on the menu, no one even mentioned them. They handed us a little table marker so they could bring our order outside. Five minutes later, they brought the salmon croissant -- on a cracked plate. And if you're expecting fresh cucumber with your lox, like in any decent version of this dish, forget it. Not here. Then came 15 full minutes of nothing. No drinks. No almond croissant. I went inside and found everything just sitting there on the bar -- cold. When I asked about it, the staff casually said the table marker was "just for food from the kitchen." No one explained that beforehand. Funny enough, I had visited just a few days earlier -- and back then, they brought my entire order, including drinks, directly to the table. So either the rules change randomly, or the service depends on who you are. Either way, it's a bad look. When I asked about the almond croissant, the staff member looked completely lost, didn't say a word, and silently went to microwave it. No apology. No acknowledgment. When it finally showed up, it was dry and clearly reheated too late. The cappuccino foam had collapsed into a sad, soupy mess. Even if fresh, it had no structure -- nothing close to what a real cappuccino should be. The coffee was cold and bitter. The almond croissant? Cloyingly sweet and totally unbalanced -- if you care even slightly about sugar, skip it. No one apologized. Not once. The whole experience felt disorganized, careless, and honestly disrespectful. I was there earlier got two drinks a matcha and a secret butter beer I was excited to try them with a friend but when I got there I was told if the drink was a latte or what it was because they didn't have a clue so I just showed them my order turns out they don't have a butter beer which was weird because it's under the secret menu and it allows me to order it but that's fine. So I got the matcha and a cherry latte, from the moment I saw the color on the matcha I knew it wasn't going to be good more like milk than matcha. The cherry latte was like if i was eating a cherry flavored car air freshener and on top of that I placed my order at 4pm since I was in a rush and I had to wait an additionally 20 mins for my order. I was here last weekend, for a girls' day with my bestie. I ended up getting a cold brew with caramel and oat milk-- with COFFEE ICE CUBES! OMG, it was SO GOOD! My favorites are their chai latte with oat milk, the cocoa oatmeal for breakfast, and the chicken curry sandwich for lunch. It might seem pricey to some, but it's definitely worth the splurge for me. Also a tip to coffee lovers- they have coffee ice cubes! It's a great little spot for anyone who wants to work there as they have wifi available, but tables vary in size/space. Seating can be difficult to get during peak hours, but off hours there is plenty. It's also good if you want to bring a dog with you because they have outdoor seating. Today I stopped by and decided to try the hot chagguccino, which is a mushroom coffee drink. I got it with oat milk , and I was surprised because it tasted similar to a regular latte. Two people who are together take over 4 top table because they want charging outlets for their computers and sit next to each other and wasting two other chairs. There were so many people who were doing that. And employees are not courteous and don't do anything when customers take up double space. Some customers were taking over two tables and two seats in a long bar table both and the employees don't say anything. Two people were taking over 6 ppl seating. I'd honestly never come here, but my friend suggests it occasionally. It has so much potential but is always a let-down for me. The food is pretty good, but it's insanely over-priced. $18 for a Breakfast Burrito (with a 2 oz. side of fruit). $5.75 for an 'add-shot' flat white. I am assuming they are covering expenses for a fairly large staff, and could support that more if said staff actually did a good job. They are friendly enough, but they are so disinterested that it's almost comical. There hasn't been a single time that I have been in that they were not having conversations behind the counter and inevitably getting orders wrong. They are simply not interested in delivering great customer service. I understand that it's basically just a coffee shop, but I think it's reasonable to expect a little more when spending $25 for a burrito and a coffee. Finally, the ambiance is fine.
