Saturday was my first time visiting this restaurant. I took my family out to celebrate my fiancé's birthday, and unfortunately, we had a terrible first experience. Making the initial reservation was easy, but trying to make any changes afterward was nearly impossible. I called several times and could not get ahold of anyone, and their voicemail was completely full. I eventually had to make a second reservation just to accommodate the changes. Once we were seated, the appetizers and drinks came out without an issue. However, after ordering our main courses, we waited over an hour for our food. When it finally arrived, everything was cold. I ordered the tomahawk steak and specifically told our server that I am 8 months pregnant and needed my steak cooked medium-well. Unfortunately, it was not prepared as requested, which was especially frustrating considering how long we had already waited for our food. This was supposed to be a special dinner celebrating my fiancé's birthday, and instead, the entire experience was extremely disappointing. The restaurant has a beautiful view and so much potential, but the poor service, long wait, and quality of the food completely ruined our first visit. For the amount of money you will spend here, I expected a much higher level of food and service. I also found the manager, Vladimir, to be very unprofessional in how the situation was handled. I had a reservation for my 40th birthday on Saturday, September 5. I tried calling the restaurant several times over the days leading up to the reservation, but I was never able to reach anyone, and the voicemail box was consistently full. When we arrived that evening, the line at the check-in and reservation podium was so long that it took approximately 15 minutes just to be assisted. At that point, we were told our table would be delayed by at least another 30 minutes, with no explanation of how we would be notified when it became available. We went to the bar, but it was so crowded that it was nearly impossible to find anywhere to stand. Several staff members told us to move from where we were standing, even though there was nowhere else to go. The lobby was also packed with frustrated customers. Eventually, we obtained a bar menu and were assisted. The woman checking us in told us we could get a drink and go outside to enjoy the view. We followed her suggestion, as I have done at Castaway before without any issues. However, while we were standing in an unoccupied area near the railing, two guests seated at a table confronted us because they had paid extra for their table and the view. Apparently, guests must now pay an additional $45 or more, on top of their meal, to sit outside. About 45 minutes after our reservation time, I went back to the host stand and politely insisted that we be seated. It appeared that guests who complained were being prioritized, because a table suddenly became available. We were finally seated approximately 50 minutes after our reservation time. The atmosphere while we waited was extremely uncomfortable--more like a packed nightclub than an upscale restaurant. There was nowhere to stand, the music was far too loud, and the music selection felt inappropriate for what should be a sophisticated dining experience. Later in the evening, the music shifted to more mainstream pop, but it remained very loud and distracting. To be fair, the food and service at the table were good. The petite seafood tower was wonderful, although the crab legs were nearly impossible to crack and eat. (Something to keep in mind if you're dressed nicely, or don't want to wrestle with your meal.) The cornbread served at the beginning was excellent, and the miso butter fish with creamed corn was delicious. Unfortunately, Castaway will no longer be my go-to choice for celebrations or upscale dinners. They have taken a beautiful venue and turned it into a strange, overcrowded, club-like environment. I found about the Castaway from an Instagram post. When I mentioned it to my friends in the valley, all of them had been there several times! Our experience was amazing! First of all, we requested outdoor seating which was perfect for a warm summer afternoon. We moved tables to one right on the edge that had a perfect view of the setting sun. The food was so delicious and the presentation was amazing. A huge shout out to our server Jonah who asked the three of us our names and remembered them throughout dinner. He went the extra mile to make sure our experience was fabulous! I'd come back just to get seated at his table again! We started with the Crispy Brussels Sprouts which had just the right amount of crunch and tanginess. My friends shared the Ahi Tuna Tartare and said it was delicious. For mains, we split the Dry Aged Ribeye and the Wild Mushroom Pappardelle Pasta and had the Garlic Truffle Fries and the Four Cheese Mac 'n' Cheese as sides. Our favorite was the Wild Mushroom Pappardelle. I'd go back and just order that with a protein. Of course we also had a few drinks. My friend ordered the Belle which was an experience in itself. You really can't beat the location of this place. The views over Burbank are absolutely outstanding, and the entire restaurant has a beautiful, upscale ambience that makes it feel special the moment you walk in. The menu has so many options that it was genuinely hard to choose what to order! I ended up trying the bacon, and oh my goodness--it is absolutely to die for. It was easily some of the best bacon I've ever had. For my main, I ordered the French toast off the brunch menu. Flavor-wise it was great and delicious, but the texture was a bit more soggy than I prefer, especially once the syrup soaked in. I mentioned this to our waitress, who was incredibly sweet and understanding about it. She even said she would share the feedback with the kitchen staff, which I really appreciated. Since it still tasted great, I ate the whole thing anyway! Tips for Visiting:Reservations are highly recommended here, but they aren't strictly required if you happen to walk in.My only real disappointment with the visit is the parking situation. They used to allow self-parking, but now they only offer mandatory valet parking. It's a wow place. We were invited by friends. Friends who do well, but are far from rich, so when I initially looked at the menu I was a bit scared. Valet at $11 was good. I was a bit put off that you can not get a receipt without giving your phone number, which I, traveling the world, try to avoid. I hate getting advertising messages while trying to sleep. Sadly, my family situation makes it necessary to keep the phone on my nightstand. Service in the restaurant was almost immaculate. He was extremely friendly and helpful - I just wished he had the decency to let us finish our sentences and not brutally cut into sensible conversations for no reason other than asking if we may refill my water or if we wanted to see the desert menu. We were early - 5pm on a Monday, the place filled up later. There was no pressure, waiting five seconds and not interrupting the customer would have achieved much. $22 for a cocktail during happy hour is a high price. They were sensational though, in every aspect - design, content and presentation. I wish I had photographed all of them, not only mine. We shared the large charcuterie plate which was a blast. A bargain actually. I had not expected this. Steaks were grilled to perfection, sides were great. Sadly, my lobster tail was totally overcooked and cold. I was invited. Everyone had a great time - and I did not want to spoil the occasion. I did not say anything. The free dessert for our "birthday child" - she got 81 - was thoughtful and above all, very very delicious. Sadly, the issues were substantial enough to make the cut the 5 stars to 4. What a cute spot! We came here on a Friday night (make a reservation) for dinner. We got a great table at the edge which overlooks the valley. The sun sets right behind the hills to the right, so if you sit by the edge section, the sun will be on your face for a bit so bring your sunnies. They have umbrella covers but at some point they don't help. However, after the sun sets, you get to enjoy the beautiful view and colorful LA sky. The menu is extensive. They have fun drinks including mocktails. Their wine menu is the most extensive. Their appetizers are also extensive and it all sounds so good. Shoutout to Karen (waitress) who recommended some awesome dishes: Ahi tuna - I can't remember the name but it is Atlantic tuna. The presentation is great but the flavor was amazing. They have a spicy like chilly that they add and it made all the difference on the flavor. It also has chopped fresh pineapple which was a surprise. For main dish, I had their New Zealand Swordfish which was pretty good. The fish itself was not overly seasoned which means I got to actually taste the fish. I ordered the Asparagus with it and their asparagus was perfectly seasoned. I totally recommend it. My date had the filet mignon and the presentation was far from impressive. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this spot! My boyfriend and I came here to celebrate our 1 year anniversary in May. He was able to reserve a table outside for us with a view. We were right near a fireplace and were plenty warm for a chillier May evening. Every single thing we ordered was SO good! The drinks were fun, beautiful, and delicious. The food was all to die for. I'll include pictures of everything. We were so pleased with our service and our meal and the whole experience. It was definitely a place that was perfect for a celebration. We chose to get a chocolate cake to end our meal and it looked just like the cake from Matilda, which is apparently exactly what they were going for! My family came here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It's been a while since we last came, and they've added a few things to modernize the venue and add things like the flower photo wall to make it more IG friendly. I like how they remodeled the courtyard/ceremony area, it feels more open and modern. They do have a newer cocktail lounge area called "The Green Room" - reminiscent of a speakeasy since the entrance door is camouflaged with the wall on the way to the restrooms. I wouldn't have known about it except for the employee going around the lobby promoting it and trying to get people in. There is no self parking option anymore and you can't just hang out on the patio by the fire pits - they've all been taken over by tables. I made reservations on OpenTable. We were seated after a short time and had a stunning view of Burbank. I love coming in the evening to watch the sunset with a cocktail in hand. I know it's supposed to be a romantic, elegant ambiance, but I wish they could turn on the lights just a little bit more, as it was so dark we could barely read our menus, luckily each table had a little lamp that we ended up passing around to try to read the menu. Or it could be that I'm just getting old and my eyes don't work anymore. Our server was Aman and he was great. Everything we ordered was delightful, with the exception of the truffle popcorn chicken. The presentation was such a surprise - so cute and in theme - with the popcorn chicken and seasoned popcorn spilling out of an iconic red and white striped popcorn box, but the amount of popcorn chicken we received was a joke. Like 6 little pieces of chicken. It looks good when it arrives, but as we dug into the box to find chicken, we discovered it's actually 90% popcorn. My whole family was shocked and was actually mad about it - I mean, we ordered chicken. Not popcorn. My husband who hardly ever mentions anything at restaurants actually flagged down Aman to complain about it. He was understanding about it and rectified the situation. Our meal started with complimentary cornbread and it was so good, we asked for another. But honestly, one of those things split with 5 people wasn't enough - it's kind of small. I really enjoyed the butterfish, flavor was great and it was not fishy at all. The steaks I'm told were ok, a bit on the dry side. All the sides were great, my favorite was My favorite thing was my cocktail! I ordered the Belle and the presentation was magical. You know how in the movie "The Beauty and the Beast" how the rose is in a glass dome? It's like that. The drink comes encased in a glass dome with smoke so you can't see inside. But as the server lifts the glass, the smoke drifts out revealing the drink with rose petals on the bottom. So pretty! And the drink is darn good too! Castaway is such a special restaurant with a spectacular atmosphere and view, outstanding service and good food, and a fabulous place for gatherings or special occasions. There's a particular energy on the busiest streets of Los Angeles, everyone walking with purpose, everyone late for something that matters. If that energy were a restaurant, it would be Castaway. The staff move like they're saving the world one table at a time, attentive to the point of urgency, a hive of people who have clearly decided that your dinner is the most important thing happening in the city tonight. I wasn't always a believer. When Castaway reopened after its remodel, new look, new menu, new identity, I walked away unconvinced, quietly certain I wouldn't be back. Years passed. A birthday came up. I went anyway. My mind has changed. Credit belongs first to our server (Teddy) , who spoke about the menu the way a good sommelier speaks about wine, not reciting facts, but genuinely curious, drawing connections between sourcing and method and the cut on the plate. It's rare to find someone who wants to keep learning the menu they've already memorized. That energy runs through the kitchen too, where chef Sczarina and her team are clearly building something with intention. The Zabuton was the standout of the night, and I don't say that lightly. I left the preparation entirely up to the chef. I've eaten at exactly three steakhouses in my life where the Maillard crust and the rendering underneath it were calibrated so precisely that the meat needed nothing from me, no extra salt, no second thought, no intervention. This was the third. The seasoning was self-sufficient in the way only real technique allows. The Picanha, unfortunately, told a different story. The fat cap had been trimmed aggressively, but the silver skin and connective tissue that should have gone with it were left behind, a small inconsistency, but the kind that matters when the cut next to it was handled so well. There were rougher edges elsewhere. A few utensils arrived less than clean. At one point, I watched a member of the executive staff wipe down menus with bare hands while setting a nearby table, the kind of detail that undercuts an otherwise polished room. And for a service team this sharp, it was surprising to be told, incorrectly, that we'd arrived late. Confidence is good; a little more interpersonal skills wouldn't hurt. So where does that leave Castaway? Somewhere in the middle tier of fine dining, good enough that I'm glad I came back, not quite good enough to be a place I'd return to without a reason. Last Saturday, I attended a wedding-anniversary celebration, and the reception was held at Castaway in Burbank. It was a very hot day. The valet parking area was a bit cramped, and the valet staff who greeted us was somewhat gruff. While waiting for the reception to start, my friends and I hung out at the bar/restaurant area. We sat at a booth with a view. The view wasn't very clear that day, but it was still nice. The décor in both the restaurant/bar and reception areas was contemporary and attractive. The ladies room was clean. Service was cordial, starting with the hostess and our waiter. Our reception was held in a separate event area. The schedule started with cocktails from 5-6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. The cocktail hour was held outdoors on a terrace with some umbrellas. Unfortunately, it was extremely hot--around 90-95 degrees. The bartenders seemed a little cranky, but I couldn't blame them. They were working outside in that heat and wearing black. What was notable, though, was that the two glasses of Chardonnay I had--poured from two separate bottles--both tasted good. So, kudos to the bartenders for keeping the wines, or at least the Chardonnay, at the proper temperature! Luckily, the staff serving the food were cordial and pleasant. Kudos to them! The food served during cocktail hour was quite tasty. There was chicken, lumpia (fried egg rolls), and goat cheese served on small pieces of toasted bread. And that wasn't all -- we also had lechon, a whole roasted pig! When dinner started, we moved inside to the event room. The room itself was fairly basic, but the service continued to be good. Kudos to the staff there as well. Dinner started with Caesar Salad, followed by a choice of main course. I had the Salmon, which was quite tasty. The other option was a combination of Shrimp and Steak, which most people seemed to order. The gentleman sitting next to me barely touched his meal, and when his partner asked why, he said the steak was tough. However, I didn't hear any similar complaints from anyone else. One thing worth mentioning for anyone considering Castaway for an event: our reception included several dance presentations, but there was no private room available for the dancers to change costumes. They had to change in the hallway leading to the restrooms. There was a door separating that hallway from the main event room, but I still felt bad for them. It didn't rain on their parade, though -- they were happy and enthusiastic about their performances. Kudos to them, too! So, just an FYI if you're planning an event here that includes dance performances or other entertainment requiring costume changes. The ladies room was clean as well. Our hosts validated our valet parking, which was much appreciated. When we picked up our car later that evening, the valet attendant was pleasant. Maybe it helped that it was already dark and the temperature had dropped to around 85 degrees! P.S. Looks like Castaway was doing very good business that day (or maybe they always do!). I had an excellent visit last night with my group for a dinner lecture. Parking is valet and $11 which kinda sucks, unlike the odyssey which is free parking which I prefer to park my own car. Walking up the Castaway restaurant is beautiful and sits atop the mountains in Burbank giving a fantastic view. The room we were in was spacious and had a back table with soda, tea, lemonade to choose from, and on the side was a small bar where you could order wine if you wanted with the meal. Staff was very attentive to us making the dining experience very lovely. We were greeted with appetizers of which i loved the mozzarella with tomato, so refreshing to whet the appetite for the meal. Salad came next and was a generous portion I couldn't finish it all! I got the salmon which arrived on a bed of mashed potato and with a carrot and green beans and I loved that the carrot was cooked perfectly and soft enough to cut through with my knife. The green beans were just ok, they did not elevate the dish in any way. However the salmon and the mashed potatoes were melt in your mouth delicious that I ate the entire thing. For dessert we got a moist chocolate cake with a light drizzle of raspberry sauce, very delicious. read more

The surf and turf deviled eggs were kind of bland, and as someone from the South, I take deviled eggs seriously lol. Steak came out more medium well than medium rare, but still had good flavor. Lobster potatoes and crab cakes were just okay. Biggest surprise of the night was the cornbread. Easily the best thing I had. Overall, I'd still definitely recommend it. My husband and I visited on a Wednesday afternoon and decided to sit at the bar. The entrance was beautiful and welcoming, but the view was just okay, nothing particularly spectacular. Our bartender never introduced himself, seemed rushed while taking our order, and barely checked on us afterward to see if we needed anything else. I ordered the shrimp cocktail, which was fine, but honestly, you can't really go wrong with that. The drinks were also underwhelming and definitely did not live up to expectations. UNACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE!I dined here Friday evening. Our server Mario was excellent genuinely attentive and professional throughout the meal. I have medically diagnosed celiac disease and informed the staff of this multiple times, many times, even prior to the seating. Despite that, I became significantly ill within hours of eating and the symptoms have continued through the evening and today. I got so ill!!! I'm writing this because something in the kitchen workflow allowed gluten cross contact, the restaurant would want to know before it affects another celiac guest! My wife called them at least 5 times the following day, no response, no return call! I emailed the restaurant "important" and outlined everything, no response.... We ordered strictly GF as per their menu, the wedge salad, oysters, mashed potatoes, and the tomahawk steak. We were also given complimentary desserts that staff told us were gluten-free, I even told the manager I was celiac, I had no sauces with any of the dishes. I became so sick that evening and could barely sleep, I wear a medical-grade wearable that tracks sleep and cardiovascular metrics every night, so I have objective data rather than just subjective impressions. Comparing Friday night (after the meal) to Thursday night: * Sleep time dropped from 7 hours 27 minutes to 2 hours 27 minutes * Time spent awake rose to 3 hours 19 minutes * Heart rate variability fell from 29.0 to 19.3 * Resting heart rate rose from 61 to 73 bpm * Overall sleep score collapsed from 78 to 13, the lowest reading in the four months I've been tracking. These numbers reflect a severe physiological stress response that began the night of the meal and is consistent with gluten exposure. It is clear the kitchen does not have adequate awareness or protocols around cross-contamination risks. I wish the restaurant had simply told me they cannot guarantee a gluten-free meal!!!! Separately, the tomahawk steak arrived overcooked. Mario noticed and acknowledged the error before my wife even had to point it out. The manager's response was to offer two rather small desserts as compensation for a well-done $160 steak. That felt inadequate.Mario provided excellent service. The food safety and the handling of the steak issue did not. Again, if you are celiac I advise the highest caution when dining here, even though it is a beautiful place. The view and vibe is beautiful (just make sure not to sit where the sun hits) staff if very attentive with good service and the ambiance is so relaxing especially outside. My spouse and I chose Castaway to celebrate my birthday and our anniversary. We had an incredible first visit, so coming back felt like an easy decision. When making our reservation, I even requested a scenic table since we didn't have one the first time. The evening started exactly as we had hoped. We were warmly welcomed, seated with a beautiful view, and our server got us off to a good start. Unfortunately, once the restaurant became busier, the experience changed. One of the main reasons I returned was for the Tomahawk steak, only to find out they had already sold out. I ordered the Steak Progressive instead, which was good, but it wasn't what I had been looking forward to. As dinner went on, our table seemed to disappear from our server's radar. We placed our order before the dinner rush, yet several tables seated after us--including the couple next to us celebrating a special occasion--received their meals, finished eating, and left before we did. We weren't ordering anything unusual, so the delay was frustrating, especially while neighboring tables received much more attentive service. Another frustrating moment involved the patio umbrella. The sun was directly in my face, and when we asked if it could be adjusted, we were told it didn't tilt. After several minutes of using our menus for shade, another team member walked over and adjusted it in seconds. It was disappointing to learn it could be moved after all. By then, the mood had shifted. Instead of enjoying our celebration, we were ready to box up our food and head home. Before leaving, I spoke with Yesenia, one of the managers. He genuinely listened and asked what Castaway could do better. My answer was simple: I don't want another couple celebrating a special occasion to leave feeling the way we did. The view is incredible, but people remember how they're treated just as much as what they're served. To their credit, the restaurant removed two appetizers from our bill and offered us a complimentary dessert. We appreciated the gesture, but it missed the point. The cost was never the issue. We happily pay for great food, exceptional service, and leave generous tips when it's deserved. We declined the dessert because we were simply ready to leave, and even its presentation felt rushed. The reason I'm giving three stars instead of one or two is because I know what Castaway is capable of. Our first visit was outstanding, which made this experience all the more disappointing. As my spouse said afterward, "This experience won't necessarily stop us from coming back because we know what Castaway is capable of." I agree. I'm sharing this review in the hope that future guests celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and other milestones receive the level of hospitality that made us fall in love with Castaway the first time. I'm hopeful our next visit reflects that experience once again. read more

Very disappointing reservation experience. We booked a Saturday night dinner for six people about a month in advance, received a confirmation, and even received a reminder the day before. Then, at 1:30 p.m. on the day of our reservation, just five hours before dinner, we received an email saying it had been canceled. When I called, I was told the entire restaurant had been booked for a private party and they did not know why our reservation had remained confirmed. Greg was apologetic and offered us a sister restaurant in Granada Hills, which I appreciated, but that location did not work for our group. What is hard to understand is why guests with confirmed reservations were not contacted well in advance once the restaurant knew it would be closed for a private event. Canceling a Saturday night reservation for six at the last minute left us scrambling for an alternative. Private events are understandable. Failing to notify confirmed guests until five hours before dinner is not. read more

We ordered the calamari, crispy brussel sprouts, and dry-aged angus ribeye with a side of asparagus, pairing with a cocktail and glass of wine. The meal began with a complimentary cornbread, which was already dense and seasoned, so I didn't feel the bread needed the extra flavoring of special butter and salt. While the food was tasty, it leaned on the heavier, greasier side, which left us quite thirsty throughout the meal. That said, the magnificent view and ambiance made up for the mid-tier food. Service was excellent - staff were very attentive. Ambiance was cozy and the view of the city was stunning. Shout out to Mitchell Pearce, the senior manager who readily addressed some concerns we brought to his attention. He also gifted us with a delicious dessert for my birthday. Came here on July 4th. It was very crowded and loud inside (expected I guess). We had a reservation and they let us wait for a patio seat outside if we preferred. The server, Riley, was so kind and accommodating as well. We were able to enjoy the outside view and fireworks and even the drone show! When we waited for our tables, they let us see the viewing areas around. The food was quite expensive. We got popcorn chicken, mac and cheese, Branzino and steak (can't remember which). My favorite was the sides. At the end of the day, you're just paying for the good view and good vibes. read more
