My wife and I split a roast chicken and salad, and the roast chicken breast meat was delicious and she really enjoyed her salad. The portion was very nice and neither of us, and no one in our group, was hungry for dessert before heading to the Pasadena Playhouse for an evening play. Gabriel was an excellent server, checking in often to make all was well and handling our bills so that each couple could pay our bills separately. I used to use Yelp like it was the Bible, reading both the negative and positive reviews before deciding where to go. It's been forever since I've written a review, but after being here twice now and having a fantastic experience both times, I had to give this place a shout-out. Having this restaurant just two minutes from the Pantages is such a huge plus! The service has been amazing, especially considering I have many food allergies. Our server was incredibly kind, patient, and asked all the right questions, which made me feel comfortable ordering. The cocktails have been excellent, and both times I've ordered the spicy pasta. And when they say spicy, they mean SPICY! I was literally sweating on this 90-degree summer night, but I didn't even care because it was THAT good. This has quickly become my go-to restaurant when I'm heading to a play, or even when I just want a nice rooftop spot to sit, relax, and enjoy some cocktails. And the hummus? SO good. I was invited to Lemon Grove for my cousin's birthday dinner, and my first impression was how cute the space is. The rooftop setting has a great atmosphere and makes for a fun place to celebrate a special occasion. We used valet parking, but there is also street parking and paid public parking nearby. Since we were a large group, we got to try a good portion of the menu, and honestly, everything we ordered was good. The prices were fair as well, especially considering the location and rooftop experience. The reason I'm taking off a star is the service toward the end of the evening. About 30 minutes before closing, our server kept returning to the table, and we started to feel rushed. He also made a few sarcastic comments that seemed intended as jokes, but they didn't come across that way to our group. Overall, the food, atmosphere, and value were all great. Randomly came across Lemon Grove when in Hollywood and decided to grab some brunch. It's conveniently located inside the Aster Hotel's rooftop and there were luckily still tables available. I went here yesterday at 5:00 PM to celebrate my birthday, and unfortunately, it ended up being a really disappointing experience. We were the first customers there, and I ordered the cacio e pepe with a side of chicken. When the dish came out, the chicken was raw. I cut into it to double check, and it was clearly pink inside. I let our server know, and she was kind and took it back right away. What was frustrating, though, was how it was handled. Instead of making a fresh portion, it seemed like the same piece of chicken was just put back on the grill and returned to me. It came back extremely overcooked, dry, and completely inedible. Beyond that, it was concerning from a food safety standpoint that the same piece of chicken was reused after being served and handled. They did remove the cost of the chicken, which I appreciate, but we still paid around $120 for the rest of the meal. Given the situation--especially since this was meant to be a birthday dinner--the overall experience did not feel worth it. I hope the restaurant takes this feedback seriously. read more

I made a reservation for Lemon Grove on a Saturday at 1:15 PM and was seated around 1:30. Despite being short-staffed, the host was absolutely fantastic. He went above and beyond, helping clear tables, bringing us water, and making sure guests were taken care of while the restaurant was clearly stretched thin. After being seated, we waited quite a while for our server. I eventually noticed what I believe was a manager stop by our table to check on us and ask if we had any questions. Since we had been ready to order for some time, I asked if we could simply place our order with her. She was delightful, helpful, and very accommodating. We ordered the Brussels sprouts, breakfast potatoes, dinosaur kale salad, chicken sandwich, and burger. Everything was flavorful and delicious, but the burger was definitely my favorite. Combined with the beautiful weather and atmosphere, it made for a very enjoyable brunch. The biggest downside was the service speed. Our waiter was incredibly kind, but because the restaurant appeared to be understaffed, he was rarely able to stop by. There were long waits between ordering, receiving food, and getting assistance throughout the meal. It never felt like poor service from the staff themselves--it felt more like a staffing issue. towards the end, I had to remind the waiter that we were celebrating a birthday (it was in my notes, and two people in person were also told, but the waiter maybe forgot). When the tab came, I had to remind the waiter that I had already provided payment at the time of arrival. The delays continued when we were leaving. We needed parking validation and waited about 5-10 minutes because the host had stepped away and there was no one else available to assist. By the time we left, parking had cost us $33 for roughly 2.5 hours. Overall, the food, atmosphere, host, and manager were excellent, and the staff who were there worked hard under difficult circumstances. Had staffing been planned a little better, I suspect this would have been an easy 5-star experience and our visit would have taken closer to an hour or hour and a half instead of stretching much longer. Hopefully management addresses the staffing challenges, because the restaurant itself is definitely worth visiting. read more

I usually order the burrata caprese because it is flavorful and light and a great start to dinner. I love Thai food, so I usually order the lemon pasta, which has nothing to do with a lemon citrus flavor, by the way! Came to see another Pantages play and typically eat at Jemmas downstairs but they were closed for an event, so perfect time to try Lemon Grove. Made a reservation online and quickly sat indoors. For an appetizer we ordered the aster meatballs, bread and sauce were great, I'm not the biggest meatball fan though. For entrees we got the half roasted chicken and the Lemon pasta. Big portion for the chicken, enough for leftovers. Lemon pasta was good, more of a curry flavor/ Thai inspired Italian dish - definitely one to try. Sadly too full for dessert. I wasn't a huge fan of the apple cake dessert, but overall, the food was really good. Service was attentive, and the restrooms were exceptionally clean and even smelled amazing. The only negative experience was with the valet service. When we first arrived, the valet told us it would be around $16. After we finished at the Pantages and walked back to The Aster, which is directly below the restaurant, we were told the valet fee was $30 (usually around $50 without validation). We spoke up and explained that the person who parked our car had quoted us around $16. While we were trying to discuss the price inconsistency with the valet cashier, I unknowingly had my phone near the card reader and was charged the full $30. Her response was, "Oh, sorry, you already paid." We walked away frustrated because of the attitude and lack of customer service in that moment. She didn't offer to refund the difference or reverse the transaction. The money itself isn't the issue--it's the principle. If a customer is given a specific price by staff, that price should be honored. I would suggest that management make sure all valet staff are on the same page regarding pricing so situations like this don't happen. Aside from the valet issue, we had a really enjoyable experience and would happily return for the food and atmosphere. read more

Case in point, my friend and I were going to see Spamalot at the Pantages Theatre, so I wanted to find a restaurant for lunch walking distance before the matinee. We ended up going to Lemon Grove at the Astor hotel, which was an incredible experience. I had never heard of this joint prior to dining there. After posting my review and pictures, I got a very nice response from the manager on Monday and then on Tuesday two very dear friends who are twins invited me to their birthday party that Friday night at the Lemon Grove where one of the sister's daughters is the DJ. We had half of the entire roof for a great party with wonderful friends meeting new people, some DJing and dancing and a marvelous server who remembered not only my name from the prior Sunday, but also that I was gluten intolerant and brought me a menu I could select from while she was taking care of over 50 people. And as you can tell I am so shy and demure to boot. She was fantastic, and the food I ordered: GF Lemon Pasta and 1/2 dozen oysters while sharing the Brussels Sprouts, were all superb. The GF lemon pasta in a pesto sauce did not have any chance to avoid my boca and I left no penne unturned nor uneated. It was a combination of an elegant and fun vibe along with the music and the 2 large bars. One bar is out in the open and the second one is in the covered area of the restaurant. Well, you're going to the Pantages and ya' gotta eat somewhere, y'know? This place is as good as many others, and seems to stick around in a nabe where restaurants have notoriously short lives. It's pretty enough, and the I'll call it Italian Adjacent menu is okay. The indoor/outdoor setting is exceptionally comfortable. It's over-priced, but this is the heart of a tourist district, and it's not outrageously over-priced enough to make you mad.
