The views at the rooftop hotel are terrific. The DTLA buildings, city's topography, the hotel's rooftop decor, setting, and pool beautifully come together. The cool breeze made this early evening in June delightful. The ambiance and scene is great for photos. I enjoyed the burrata and Calabrian personal pizza. The pizza was tangy, slightly sweet, and overall delicious. The pizza included fresh basil, tomato Ragu, burrata, and spiced honey. The table service is pretty good. A glass of red wine and the pizza was just perfect for a meal . I would like to return here to absorb the DTLA scenery and enjoy a drink/snack/light meal. read more

I've given a week and a half to let my thought settle before this review. I'm torn as my only negative is our server. No rooftop view or wonderful food can change the way you are made to feel. I knew it wasn't just us when a nearby table made a comment "good luck" when trying to get our server, Tony, to come back to finish placing our order and another table with a similar comment when we needed a pen from our server who seemingly avoided for 15+ min after our check was tossed on our table with no thanks or any words. Sad, because the food here.. 5 STARS!!! Hands down some of the best food! Other staff also... 5 STARS!! So welcoming and friendly like the entire hotel staff being guests at the hotel. Our server Tony was 2 stars as he started off ok but ran away mid order thinking it was the loud music and did get drinks delivered very quickly. When he returned with drinks my son was able to finish his menu order that was missed. Tony did explain the small kitchen and items would arrive at different times.. all good and things came out quicker and in sync more than expected. Allergies were noted and accommodated so that was appreciated. After food was delivered and we had time to enjoy our meal, the manager (I presume) was welcoming and interested in asking how we enjoyed our meal. It was all wonderful and told him so.. once he left however, it was as though we didn't exist or were of little importance. Tony came back and tossed the check on the table and turned away quickly, never stopping to see if we actually needed anything else. Had to get his attention to order dessert. My son ordered the strawberry cheesecake bar and I ordered an espresso martini.. this wasn't on the menu and I would NOT recommend an espresso martini. One of my favorite drinks I've had from MANY places. This one was all VERY strong espresso. It looked like a martini but there was NO sweetness of vanilla, chocolate or any other sweet flavor. There was no smooth finish of vodka... literally very harsh espresso with nothing else. I put it to the side hoping our server would come back. My son finished his dessert entirely and we waited... and waited. My drink sat full on the side of the table and Tony tossed our check down without question and turned to run away. I had to nearly chase after him to get his attention when I explained my drink was not good and just wanted it removed from my bill. He asked if I wanted them to remake it and I said no, I wasn't even sure it was the drink I ordered. He did have it removed but literally came back with the check and tossed it on the table and ran away quickly again without a pen so we couldn't sign to our room and leave. It dragged painfully on and on ruining what could have been an amazing experience. My son had to finally get up and ask for a pen which Tony gave him with no words and seemed annoyed. So odd and lacking in hospitality. Is this normal at an upscale restaurant to not care if your customers are satisfied? Coming from the Bay Area and dining at other upscale restaurants I just haven't ever felt "less than" like I did here. I sill left 20% but Tony, I am a 30-50% tipper and you judged us wrong. We may not have been in sequins and tux's after coming off an 8 hour drive and in comfort clothes, but deserved better. Serving is a demanding job, and I appreciate hardworking hospitality professionals as I was once one in my younger years. Customer interactions significantly impact a guest's experience and a server that is dismissive or unfriendly does not reflect the level of service I would expect from a business with such a great atmosphere. Our waitress was so nice! The view on this rooftop was lovely for downtown LA. We got a variety of items to share. The grilled octopus was delicious. Wish it came with more bread since the dipping sauce was so good. Octopus had good flavor. The calamari was crispy. I just wish they gave more of the calamari. It was packed with a lot of filler like jalapeños and onions. The lamb chop was suppose to be cooked medium and it came out blue/rare. Between the stunning skyline backdrop, great service, and excellent food, it's a spot that delivers a memorable dining experience. We started with the cheese and charcuterie board to share. While it was enjoyable, I wish they offered a better cheese selection. The board could definitely benefit from a sharp cheese to round out the flavors. For my entrée, I had the porcini-rubbed steak, which was cooked to perfection. Tender, flavorful, and exactly as ordered. We also tried the spicy vodka pizza, which was decent but not particularly memorable compared to the other dishes. The cocktails were a standout. I especially enjoyed the chili cucumber gimlet and the reposado-based cocktail. Both were well-balanced, refreshing, and expertly crafted. One thing I really appreciated was their special Pride Month cocktail selection. A portion of the proceeds benefited a nonprofit organization supporting LGBTQ+ youth programs throughout Los Angeles, which made the experience feel even more meaningful. We came here for my sister's sweet 16, and the location was beautiful! The rooftop seating made our evening unforgettable, and the service was on point! The servers were kind to accommodate an additional party at the last minute. They also rearranged some of the heating fixtures to keep us warm. Much appreciated! The food was pretty good. Between a burger plate, meat tacos, shrimp tacos, and ceviche, we definitely were full! I'd like to add that the ambiance is very social and lively, making it the perfect venue for a group gathering or a catch-up with a girlfriend. There is no free parking, so plan for that. This is the first time I came to Cara Cara. The reservation was simple to make. The food was outstanding. Service so alright. I wish they gave us an entire bottle to refill my water. We got Steak 5/5 I love the steak so much. The chimichuri sauce and juice steak complemented each other. The steak wasn't overly spiced and I could taste the beef. Steak was so tender too. Branzino 5/5 the fish was crispy and soft. The branzino tasted so fresh, soft, and sweet. I enjoyed it a lot. Cara cara salad 5/5 was equally refreshing. One of my friends celebrated her birthday at Cara Cara. She made reservations for midday on a Sunday, but when we arrived, the place was empty. We would have been okay without reservations for that day and time. By the time we were leaving, then the place started filling up. We were seated next to the pool area, which was nice. Everything was beautiful with great views of Downtown L.A.'s skyline. They have outdoor heaters in case it's chilly out and you still want to sit outside. Service here is fantastic, and our waitress was there to help us with anything we needed. Their menu is small, but it has a variety of options to choose from. I ordered their halibut fish tacos, which were battered with tempura, topped with red cabbage, pineapple adobo, and avocado salsa verde. I thought the tacos were good, but I don't think that the price matched the quality of the food. To go along with my meal, I ordered a Passionfruit Freedom cocktail that is made with mezcal. It was a little strong but delicious. We had a great time celebrating my friend's birthday. She received a complimentary dessert for her birthday, which was a nice touch. Time and again, Cara Cara remains one of my favorite spots to show off when we have guests from abroad or out of town. Not just for the delicious food, but also the impressive view onto the DTLA skyline. The staff and the kitchen were very helpful to identify or modify food items to accommodate one guest's garlic allergy. And despite this modification, everything was very flavorful. PS: The valet parking guy was either drunk or otherwise loaded but seemed to be very confused. PREVIOUS REVIEW 2: Back for another occasion to demonstrate to our foreign guests the beauty of the DTLA foodie scene and L.A. skyline. And again, it was a magnificent experience. Even cocktails this time were delicious - in form of the fruit-based cocktail. All menu items were stellar: White Trumpet Mushroom focaccia, Cara Cara cobb salad, Shrimp Tacos, Piri Piri Chicken, Hangover Burger all wonderful - but the Grilled Branzino in my opinion topped everything. PREVIOUS REVIEW 1: Unquestionably, this wonderful rooftop patio on the top of the Proper hotel is not only a cool place with the best and most direct view of the DTLA skyline but it offers a splendid ambiance for a relaxed social gathering with delicious food by Suzanne Goin (who we had known for her fabulous skills from Lucques and A.O.C). We ordered most items in a shared fashion with a few individual exceptions. The Douro almonds and the marinated olives were excellent starter snacks. The cocktails however did not hit it to say it nicely. We otherwise started with Piri Piri Fried chicken, Vegan antipasto, Hokkaido Scallop Crudo, and cauliflower tacos. The grilled albacore, hangover burger, dried figs and prosciutto focaccia, and the trumpet mushroom focaccia were a touch more substantial and filling. All food items were generally delicious but on occasion could've benefited from a tiny touch more salt and flavor. We skipped desserts except for BD surprise as we did have a major one waiting at home. Parenthetically, I was told that the the second Goin restaurant at the bottom of the Proper (Caldo Verde) doesn't have the same great view but serves the better food: to be tested in the near future). The part that I didn't like (apart from the cocktails) and which contributed to dropping a star was the uncharming service which was inattentive, hectic like a bee stock, generally little welcoming, and for substantial periods did not seem to care. read more

What a special treat to dine here for dinner during sunset on a corporate event. We had a wonderful table on the rooftop of the Proper hotel, overlooking the downtown skyline. The view up here is spectacular. It has a beautiful fire pit in the middle for intimate settings, and overall a great vibe with chill music playing in the background. We came here on a Tuesday evening, I'm sure it's much more lively on a weekend. We were fortunate to try so many items on the menu. All dishes were served family style for our corporate meal which helped in trying all the foods. Overall the food was tasty but honestly not overly unique. - Farmer's lettuce: nice way to start the meal, fresh and good sharing portions - The Larder plate: cheeses were delicious! I wish it had a bit more fruit and some nuts. - White trumpet mushroom focaccia: good overall but a bit too oily, and some more mushrooms would've been nice. - Shrimp tacos: alright, but the shrimp pieces were a bit small - Piri Piri fried chicken: this one has a kick! This was tasty, probably my favorite dish - Grilled branzino: cooked nicely and I liked the flavors. I especially liked the accompanying vegetables. - Coconut basque cheesecake: holy moly this was amazing! My favorite dish of the meal. From the texture to the coconut flavors, it was all amazing! - Vanilla bean flan- yup it's just a regular flan with some blueberry compote. Some more of the almonds would've been nice. It's definitely a wonderful restaurant with great rooftop vibes. Great spot for a date, with friends, or bringing out of town guests to show them a great downtown skyline. Would come here again and only get the Piri Piri chicken, the coconut cheesecake and try some other items on the menu. Valet parking for restaurant guests is $17 for the first 3 hours. read more

Cara Cara is where farm to table meets rooftop restaurant and bar. The space is nicely laid out and will impress for any occasion with 360 degree views of Downtown Los Angeles. Cara Cara has an indoor portion with tables and bar counter seats. Outside there is a covered portion and an uncovered portion with a lounge feel where you can see the views closer to the edge. The decor is classy and I would highly recommend it for friends, dates, or business. Food was excellent. I enjoyed the fresh greens and the quality of ingredients. The tastes and textures were on point. Very clean and high quality food with well executed dishes. The staff and Queenie are world class. Had a late lunch a couple weekends ago and enjoyed the view of downtown with a nice mezcal cocktail and piri piri chicken. I didn't think I was hungry but somehow ate the whole thing by myself lol added a side of greens for good measure. Attentive staff even though it was pretty busy and service was prompt as well. Visited Cara Cara for a friend's birthday lunch on a Sunday. Came up to the hotel and it was confusing because the doorman said he didn't have our reservation noted. After checking again for the third time, the doorman finally said he saw our reservation and let us up to the restaurant. That was really quite odd. The space itself is outdoors and has a really awesome Mediterranean ambiance. The space overlooks Downtown LA's skyline. From the outdoor patio/dining area, the hotel's pool and hotel patrons lounging are also visible. Overall, you pay for the view which may be worth it to you depending on what you're looking for. The food was fine, but the prices were definitely hotel restaurant prices. I ordered the chicken club sandwich, and I did like that it was on artisan bread instead of regular bread. Note: Groups 6 and over get charged mandatory 20% service fee and all tables get charged a 6% "wellness" fee for hotel employees. read more

tasty drinks and stunning rooftop view! came for a quick stop to look at the view. we ordered the passionfruit freedom and reposado & relaxation. really enjoyed both drinks. service was okay and wasn't what we expected. we had to directly order at the bar and seat ourselves. maybe because it was pretty empty when we came in. there's valet service and parking is available next to the proper building (i believe $10 a day). read more

We ordered 4-5 different dishes to try a variety of items on the menu, but unfortunately none of them met our expectations. The food lacked flavor and overall wasn't enjoyable. On the positive side, the service was good -- the staff was attentive and polite throughout our visit. The atmosphere was okay and made the experience a bit better, but overall we were disappointed mainly because of the food. Only drinks are ok. The food was not tasty at all. read more
