Went for a Thursday night out with the girls since one of us had just purchased a groupon. Entrance door was locked so the valet went around and alerted the servers! Food was so-so prices didn't reflect the quality-- expected more. Since we had the groupon we thought it was alright. Went to use it & the waitress says it was denied. She asked the manager and he said we couldn't use it. Definitely NOT going back again, on the way out the waitress told us the ONLY OTHER PARTY in the restaurant had the same issue with their groupon too! LOVE LOVE LOVE Roma!!! I went to Roma quite a bit when I lived in RI so when my family and I came into town for Thanksgiving week, Roma was out first stop after T.F. Greene! My husband had been there before, but my Mom and 14 yo son had not. They were in heaven! The sights, the smells, and the neighborhood vibe of the marketplace all made for a great experience. Our food order consisted of 2 Italian subs, Chicken Cutlet sub, Stuffed Artichoke, and a (giant) Rice Ball (Arancini). Everything was fantastic!!! I had the Stuffed Artichoke and the Arancini and I was in love with both of them. The Artichoke was very large, but tender and the stuffing was so flavorful! The Arancini was equally delicious! The outside was crispy, but not greasy, the rice was moist, but not mushy, the cheese was tangy and had just the right amount and the peas are always a welcomed addition. They split it in half and topped it with some fresh marinara....YUM! (my mouth is watering right now, just describing it!). My Mom and husband loved their Italian subs. The rolls are made on-site, the meats are top-notch and the condiments were all very fresh. My son decided to stay within his comfort zone and ordered a Chicken Cutlet sub, but after he took one "taste" of my Mom's Italian sub he somehow negotiated for half of her sandwich, too! Then came the dessert...Cannolis!!! Deliciously perfect as I remember. I also picked up a tow of Wandies to bring to Thanksgiving dinner the next day. They have an espresso machine, too. So if you need a good espresso or latte to go with your dessert, they have it covered! Now on to the breads. OH MY!!!! There are several things that I miss about RI and the bakeries...especially the breads....are near the top of the list. Roma has a GREAT selection of breads. From single sub size to the monstrous hearth-baked breads...they have it all! With the serious void in the Crusty Bread market in Charlotte I wanted to snag every loaf of bread that they had there, but I had to resist since it was only day one of out trip. Hmmm...I wonder if they would offer par-baked breads that I could freeze and ship home? Now that could be an idea!! The marketplace is great. Whether you are looking for meats and cheeses, baked goods, Italian Pantry Items, or a great quick meal...Roma has it all! They also have their own parking lot and as anyone familiar with Federal Hill knows....parking is hard to come by! I had a Living Social I needed to use before the end of the month so I went with two of my friends for dinner this past Friday night. I was very skeptical after reading the reviews but went anyway. I will say that there is no ambiance (brighter than normal lighting and awkwardly placed tables) and for a Friday night the place was pretty dead. However, we had great service. I wish I could remember our server's name but he was so enthusiastic and happy to have us there. They didn't have a wine list because they were changing it (?) but he also wasn't sure of what they had so he gave me the old one to work off of. The prices were cheap! $20 bottle of Line 39 sauv blanc? I'm there! He said they were all out but then came back 10 minutes later triumphantly toting the last bottle. We were so grateful. The food was good too, we only ordered two items - margherita pizza and pasta bolognese but both were very tasty. All in all I would go back if I had another Groupon or the like but I'd probably sit outside. read more

Is this place new? It looks like the kind of establishment that's been on the Fed for F-O-R-E-V-E-R. You really get a sense of old Italy at Roma. Now... the food is solid, and I did enjoy the three items my friends and I shared: the tortellini vodka, chicken parm, and a seafood spaghetti dish. But here are a few things I think could be improved: 1) The free bread is not that fresh. If you're going to have free bread, it needs to be fresh and it needs to be house-baked. Otherwise, I think it's better to not have any bread at all. 2) The wait time for meals to come out is almost over an hour. 3) It's just a little too much oil and grease. You definitely get a LOT of food for your money, and portions are all big enough to share. It's definitely an "old italy" and "mamas kitchen" kind of feel with these huge hearty dishes coming fresh from the oven. I do think they could work on refining things a little and making sure everything served is quality as well as quantity. I would go back, especially if the waits at other places on the Fed are redic. But it might not be the first place I pick on the long Atwells strip of old Italy. read more

If you have a special event that you need a venue for, please choose Roma! Dom and Suzanne (the owners of the restaurant and husband and wife duo) are so sweet and they treat you like family. It was wonderfully refreshing for Dom to check up on my family's progress in preparing for the party through text message, because you simply can't miss them like you do with emails. My family and I threw my mom a surprise party for her 50th birthday, and the experience was wonderful. I need to give an extra shout out to Nick, who is a Manager at Roma. He is the one who answered every question and request we had the whole night with a smile- all while pouring up delicious drinks! From the time that my family arrived to set up the centerpieces, to the time we put the last centerpiece in it's box to go home, Nick and his team were friendly and attentive. Add to that the delicious food that people raved about, and I was ecstatic that I made Roma our final choice to host our party. Our guests had a choice between grilled salmon, roasted half chicken, and steak. All of our guests enjoyed their meal. I, unfortunately, was not able to taste my food because I was getting over a cold (but that's okay, because it gives me a reason to go back to their restaurant!) My mom had a great time and so did I. I will put pictures below. Dom and his team will absolutely work with you to make the venue space match what you were dreaming of. In addition, I feel I must mention how much food each guest received when we chose to use the "Served Deluxe Dinner Package." Every guest received a passed appetizer, garden salad, the host's choice of pasta (we chose penne with pomodoro), two sides with their entree (we chose sauteed seasonal veggies and red roasted potatoes), an entree (the host can choose up to three different options for their guests to choose from BEFORE your event), and assorted pastries and coffee. Outside of Italy the pizza at Roma is the best I've ever had! All the ingredients are extremely fresh and you can taste the care that goes into putting each one of these pizza together. The sauce is light and plentiful, but not overpowering and the basil is very fresh. The price also can not be beat! Usually after a pizza slice I feel like there is a ball of dough in my belly and the pants need to be loosened...after Roma pizza you feel like you didn't eat a heavy meal. Went to dinner last night and had Dana for our server. She was very nice and had great suggestions. It took a little while for everything to come out, but when it's made to order, you do need to have some patience. We started with mozzarella caprese insalata and calamari with the balsamic drizzle (drizzle was Dana's suggestion) and it was fantastic! I had scallop risotto for dinner and my husband had the veal saltambucca. Both were absolute heaven! Like I said, it took a little while but it was well worth the wait. I find a lot of other reviews that are so-so because they had to wait to be say and such, but it's not a huge place and a wait is a good sign of things to come! I really hate to do this, but you should avoid this place like I avoid Scarborough Beach on a Sunday. The one star is because the food is delicious. I would bathe in their sauce, and dress in their gnocchi/chicken parm. The rest is a friggin' nightmare. First we were seated right in front of the lounge singer who had the volume turned up to high (love the Sinatra, quit the Bruno Mars). Nice guy though, I dig the swagger. We were also seated next to a giant party of old people, which was bound to be a disaster (and it was). Those folks would have been better off at Applebees. We would have asked to be moved, but it was a Saturday night and they were full. It was about 80 degrees in the dining room and the lights were turned up too high. I felt like one of those rotisserie chickens. The staff was completely overwhelmed by the large party of old folks. Basically, the night was filled with slow service, lack of attention to detail, and sending plates back due to mess ups. We finally ordered after waiting about 20 minutes. 30 minutes after that, the waitress came back and said that the cheese is already in the eggplant (she ordered it because she is dairy free). Figure that out earlier, for the love of God... they made my wife feel awkward for holding up the order. Shame on you. Our waitress never apologized once for the slow and incorrect service all night. Then she sent the replacement dish out with cheese on it (again), and her salad had croutons (she mentioned a gluten allergy...croutons are bread...you're welcome). Clearly, she did not give a flying sh*t about allergy concerns. Maybe she's a robot. I get it, we could have tried another place with the allergy concerns...but she just wants to feel normal once and a while by going to a nice place on the hill. We should have gone to get our palms read instead. It's cheaper and at least we would have had a heads up. This was the worst paid experience I had recently, minus my racist barber. The manager came over to check on us and I mentioned the epic debacle that had been our night. He never apologized or offered to make it up to us. Why'd you ask, fella? I get it, they were overwhelmed. They clearly were not prepared for the large party next to us. They never should have seated a party of that size. Those folks were complaining all night due to slowness and wrong food. I actually felt worse for them. The thing is, if you suck on any given night, you have to express your apologies....also, admit you suck. Don't just not say anything. That makes you suck more. Which wasn't easy. I'm really sorry for bashing this place, but that's how it was. I'm quite easy if you communicate to me and make me understand...and make it up somehow. Roma did not do any of these...in fact, it almost felt like they didn't care. A good manager would have offered to take items off of the bill, at the VERY LEAST. I left feeling worse than a Ren and Stimpy close-up. I might consider giving this place a different shot on a different day with a different staff. But I wouldn't pay another dime, seeing as we just shelled out $120 for getting bent over and steel-tipped boot kicked. I wouldn't go back on a Saturday night if Jesus himself descended from the Atwells Pineapple and willed it. This could have all been avoided by putting out some fires while we were there. Food is actually good here. I've been here before and had eggplant parmigiana which was really delicious. We went again this past Columbus Day weekend. The staff were really nice and friendly. There were lots of bread, baked goods, prepared food in the glass cases. Outside where they were grilling (waiting for the parade), we had the Sausage and Peppers which tasted really good but kinda pricey ($8), Arancini/ Risotto balls (or Italian rice balls), and sangrias ($5/plastic cup, also pricey). It wasn't even freshly prepared. It came already premixed straight from the bottle. Then we ordered lattes and the mini egg custard pies from the dessert counter. I came to Providence to visit some friends who had moved there in recent years. When they asked what kind of meal we were in the mood for we decided we could go for some Italian. They said they knew the perfect place that had great food at a reasonable price. When we arrived they were surprised to discover that the menu had changed, the decor had been upgraded, and the prices had been slightly increased. Our waitress explained that they had a chef from Naples come in recently to help overhaul the restaurant. And what a job he did! The food was absolutely incredible, across the board, and the prices, while apparently higher than perviously, were still incredibly reasonable. I ordered lobster ravioli in a vodka sauce that was absolutely to die for, and my reasonably priced Pinot Noir was the perfect companion. Our waitress (I wish I remembered her name) was incredibly sweet and knowledgeable. She gave us a full run-down of the menu and made plenty of suggestions along the way. She went out of her way to ensure we had a great experience and it was greatly appreciated. The restaurant wasn't overly busy, and would almost certainly be a great place for a romantic dinner for two, while still being great for our party of four. I'm by no means a "foodie", though I've certainly eaten in my fair share of restaurants over the years. I just had an incredible experience at Roma last night and had to write this review first thing in the morning. I had planned an event in the private dining room for about 48 people. Everything was top notch. First off, in the planning stages, Chef Dom was very easy to work with. He knew what we wanted and made the planning process easy. He accommodated with whatever we needed. I was confident from the start that this would be a good event for us. When I got to the venue over a half hour early, everything was already set up. The tables were ready and the valet parking attendant was already ready to park cars. When I got to the banquet room, the bartender was already there ready to make drinks at the cash bar. I had neglected to ask for a podium for our event when I planned this, so at the last moment, Nick, the event manger that night, scrambled for us to find one and bring it upstairs. His attempt to remedy my oversight was impressive and appreciative. When it came to dinner service, the food was incredible. Everyone there complimented me on the quality (we had chicken, pasta, a salad, and fish) and just as important, there was plenty of food for our big eaters. This was a point of emphasis for me when i worked with Dom and he delivered! A few other points. Again, my oversight, I forgot to add the soda service to the meal, and I asked last minute if this could be done (people were already seated). Nick and his staff again tried to accommodate me and quickly got pitchers of soda on the tables. In the haste, two tables did not get extra glasses for the soda, but that was due to not having it set up in advance and certainly understandable. Nick continued to check in the entire dinner and checked with me as to when to serve dessert, which I appreciated as well. We can not wait to go back again for another event. read more

When we arrived we figured out on our own that we had to walk to the back of the bar and wait for someone to notice and take us in. As I was waiting to be seated, I watched two of the waitstaff haphazardly set a new table. They left one part of the tablecloth dragging on the floor while the other side was barely covering the table top. I called one of them over and said, "Someone is going to trip on that tablecloth if you leave it like that." The waiter said, "OH, I didn't even notice. Thanks." That should have been the first clue how poor the service would be from thereon in. Sadly this place has absolutely no ambiance whatsoever. The tables were arranged with no rhyme or reason; the flooring was different on the two sides of the room; there were only a couple of paintings for sale on one of the otherwise completely unadorned walls; drop down ceilings; bland paint job. It reminded me of my Italian grandmother's finished basement. My impression was that it is essentially an extension of their deli, but where you can sit down and enjoy their delicious food. I would not describe Trattoria Roma as the fine dining establishment as depicted by their website. Finally we were seated -- but not before a couple off the street were seated first. I had to pipe up and say, "Oh, excuse me, we had reservations and we have been waiting here." The response? "Oh, I thought you were already helped." Uh, duh, if we were already helped, why would we still be standing there? OK, still no biggie. We were led to a table that was literally in the aisle, right smack in the middle of the room where everyone, waiters and customers alike, would have to navigate around us. I asked if we could have a different table, maybe somewhere out of the way? But we could not be accommodated; we were told the only tables left were set for four. So much for reservations. I asked them to literally drag our table out of the aisle a little bit; there was plenty of room to maneuver this, but the placement was still less than optimal. Now, finally seated, the waitress gave us menus and asked if I had a Groupon, even though I mentioned it when I was making the reservations. Confirming once again that yes, I had a Groupon, (!) the waitress disappeared for a while. The prix fixe menu looked good, so I asked the waitress when she returned if my friend could have a prix fixe menu of her own. The waitress literally GRABBED mine away and said, "Oh, if you have a Groupon, the prix fixe doesn't apply." I get that; I didn't read the fine print -- but maybe some care could have been taken to remove my prix fixe menu in the first place, rather than embarrassing me once again. Time for drinks! YAY! As the waitress put my red sangria down, it spilled in two places. Not a little mind you, but two puddles which pooled on the paper placement. "Oh, the bartender gave you a nice full glass!" she said enthusiastically, and WALKED AWAY. I could just envision leaning into the puddles with my arms, so I politely called over to a gal who was helping bus dishes and requested a new placemat and something to wipe up the mess with. Shortly after, she came back...and guess what she did? Without stopping and looking, she DROPPED a new paper placemat on top of the old placemat - right on top of the puddles. (Sorry for the capital letters, I feel compelled to use them for emphasis, and not for exaggeration.) I fashioned a serviceable placemat by folding the two together, to ensure the wet parts would not make contact with my arms. Good news: the food was very good! My friend had the CAPESANTE CON RISOTTO: grilled sea scallops over a creamy risotto milanese with parmigiano reggiano and herbs (24.95). I had the spicy BUCATANI PESCATORE with shrimp, sea scallops, calamari, clams and mussels in a San Marzano tomato sauce, tossed with Bucatini pasta and herbs (also $24.95). Both were absolutely out of this world! But again, service was an issue; I was not given a bowl to put my shells in. While the waitress said she would be right back with one, she forget all about it. I creatively stacked the shells on my bread dish and hailed someone else when this arrangement became too precarious. The coup de gras? Handwritten on the bottom of the check: "The cost without the Groupon would have been $118.00." Is that a big "hint" to make sure I would properly tip to the full price, and not the discounted price? Tacky, don't you think? I am always respectful and polite to servers; it is a demanding job and they work hard. The wait staff at Trattoria Roma were certainly friendly and enthusiastic, but definitely not appropriately trained. At all. And that, my friends, takes away from the whole experience. read more

Went on a busy Saturday night as part of a double date. We made a reservation which I would recommend. Despite a large number of guests who were waiting for seats we were seated right on time. The restaurant is located in the same building as the "Market Place'". The Market Place is a combination bakery and deli and though we didn't purchase anything there, everything looked really tempting. As for the restaurant The ambiance was casual, comfortable romantic and seemed epically clean. The service was attentive and friendly. Our server took her time to describe the entrees we asked about and also made recommendations. She seemed very knowledgeable and enthusiastic when describing them and her recommendations showed that she really understood what we were looking for. The appetizers were excellent, we had the calamari and a mussels dish. The portions were perfect for sharing, all four of us had some of both. For the main course I ordered the spaghetti and clams with white wine and garlic sauce, It was amazing! The other gentleman in our party had the veal parmigiana and he loved it. My wife had the pan seared scallops on risotto, she liked it but after tasting mine she wished that she would have ordered it too. The deserts choices were tempting and we again shared two of the triple chocolate mousses the portions were adequate for sharing and they were delicious. We took our time eating and chatting and never felt rushed. I will go back and I recommend that if you're in the mood for a nice Italian dinner you give it a try. read more
