Worth the trip to Ridgewood. Everything about this meal blew me away. From the Calabrian polenta bread, to the burger, to the strawberry tart. We also got the lasagna but the burger and bread was our favorite. Can't wait to come back. The ambiance was upscale dinner and the service was no-fuss and warm. read more

Food (5/5) - Burger was to die for, worth going early just to secure it during brunch hour on weekends. Good char, bacon was just the right thickness and juicy (not too thick and chewy, not too thin and crispy), and brioche bun's sweetness helped offset the sodium and grease very well. Squash and muhammara were our second and surprising favourite. Would not skip it. Tasted more like a sweet potato, almost like it's bad for you, right softness without being too mushy. Muhammara was a little more like a gravy and went very well with the char on the vegetable. Polenta bread was as good as expected. Other things we got were war style potatoes and housemade mortadella. Service (5/5) - our waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu, made good recommendations (for ex - gave us war sauce on the side for the crispy potatoes), checked in regularly and kept our waters filled, she was very friendly. Ambiance (4/5) - nice and bright, homey, very apt for the style. Only drawback is music got louder on the hour, probably. Price (3/5) - not an absolute steal but fairly priced. 18 for the burger but it is on the slightly smaller side, starters and sides were 15-20 range, polenta bread 8 but is on the smaller side. read more

This place is so deep in Brooklyn but worth the trek. Great date vibe with candlelit lighting and shareable dishes. We got the sesame and wild oregano bread which tasted exactly how it sounded with just the right amount of slight char on the bread. Next was the lasagna, a super thin two layered pasta with meaty sauce inside and Parmesan drizzled on the outside. This dish set itself apart by not being too heavy but still capturing the best parts of lasagna. Surprisingly these two items were enough for us and we didn't want to be too full before going out. Totaled to about $30pp. Also, we had the most surfer dude server and it was pretty fun interacting with him. read more

My group of 4 came for dinner with a 7pm reservation. Our server was friendly, provided lovely service, and was knowledgeable about the menu. Two of our party arrived a few minutes ahead of the others and when we were seated were immediately asked if we were interested in the burger, because there were only 2 left. We appreciated her letting us know so we could ensure we didn't wait and grabbed them! We started with some cocktails, they had several great house ones. We tried the white negroni & tonic, the flower power sour, and the "the carrot drink." All were unique and tasty! We decided to order dishes for the table so we could try more items. We ended up ordering: calabrian chili butter polenta bread, snap pea salad, two sheet lasagna verde bolognese, war style crispy potatoes, two double cheeseburgers, strawberry almond tart and salted caramel chocolate mousse. First things first, the burger is as good as it is hyped to be. Moist, flavorful, melt in your mouth goodness on a perfectly toasty bun. Definitely get it. The other items were equally as good, with the polent bread being so fluffy and light, the snap pea salad refreshing with an addictive dressing, the potatoes crisp, and the lasagna with a perfect char on top. The desserts were deeply rich and satisfying. While both were great, we definitely recommend the strawberry almond tart, it was a stunner! read more

We have been here three times now and we decided it's our favorite restaurant in all of NYC. The burger is absolutely to die for, the best we've ever had I think. Try going before 1pm to snag one, or go before 6 for dinner, since they sell out very quickly. The polenta bread is a must-have every single time, no matter how full we are otherwise. The lasagna is very unique, as it's flat and green, but still very tasty. I would skip the sausage for brunch if it's available as a special, since it wasn't anything special. Tasty though, if that's what you're in the mood for. The woodfired squash was so good it inspired me to go home and try to recreate it. The mrs. crispy is one of their most popular brunch dishes and is really great. Ambiance is somehow light and airy but also busy and bustling at the same time. Servers are always down to earth and friendly as well read more

*** Make Reservations!!! (Via Resy.com)*** Unbeknownst to me, we should have made reservations weeks before we intended to go to Rolo's! I tried to make reservations a few days before my party of 4 wanted to go; only to find out that they were completely booked until 9:30pm on that Tues evening! They mentioned that they do keep a few tables open for walk-ins; and you can also eat at the bar. So instead of picking another date for dinner, we decided to take our chances as walk-ins. Well.... I showed up at 5:30pm hoping to get a table by 6pm. To my surprise, they were completely booked and had no room for more walk-ins! However, they had plenty of outdoor seating available...but it was 90 degrees that day! Well, big shout-out to host Shaun, who went out of his way to rearrange table seatings/reservations, and made room for my parry of 4! Now THAT is top-notched customer service! Thanks so much, Shaun! You totally saved our evening! Ok, onto Rolo's! I didn't realize that Rolo's took up 3 storefronts! We were seated in the middle section, near their open kitchen. I was amazed that all their delicious dishes came out of that small open kitchen, and it was intriguing to see the chefs/staff do their "thing". They are a well-oiled machine, and made all their hard work seem effortless and dare I say, stress-free?!?! Kudos to all! Rolo's menu isn't huge, which I appreciated. (I dread going to a restaurant and being handed a book of menu items). Their menu has enough options to satisfy everyone's palate, without being overwhelming. As usual, we decided to eat family-style, so we could try as many dishes as possible. Our Menu (shared by 4): -- Wood-Fired Polenta Bread w.Sesame & Wild Oregano $10...this was a tad bit salty, but we loved it. A Must-Have! (This also went well with the Stracciatella)! -- Stracciatella Cheese, Silk Chili, Cured Sumac w.Wood-Fired Polenta Bread $13...this was cheesy goodness but dare I say, I actually like the Wood-Fired Polenta Bead more than the Stracciatella?! Both delicious! -- Two-Sheet Lasagna Verde Bolognese $32...I was intrigued by all the photos of this Verde lasagna and their rave reviews. This lasagna was pretty good but honestly, I think the other dishes were more interesting to try. -- Wagyu Skirt Steak $48... Perfection! This was. Absolutely Delicious and prepared perfectly rare. Note that our server didn't ask us how we wanted this prepared, and it came rare, which we loved, but if you prefer your meat more well-done, you should probably mention it to your server. -- Wood-Fired Chicken (1/2) w.Green Tahini & Mint $34....I normally don't order chicken dishes when I eat out because it's so ordinary. But after reading the rave reviews for this dish, we ordered it. The Tahini Mint sauce was fantastic but the chicken was....chicken! Hahaha Good but nothing Mind-Blowing. (I'm going back to not ordering chicken dishes!). -- War Style Potato Wedges $12...these crispy potato wedges came with 2 sauces: mayo (?) & a delicious brown sauce; topped with chopped raw onions. The mayo was no big deal but the brown sauce was! We were all intrigued by this sauce; with everyone trying to guess what the ingredients were. It had a surprising spiciness that crept up on you, and lingered. We were completely stumped. We asked, and were told that the sauce was made with soy sauce, Thai chili oil & peanut butter... peanut butter!!! Incredible! -- Grilled Greens, Garlic Confit $13...these were good but were cooked with whole garlic cloves. Chopped garlic probably would have made this dish more flavorful. All-in-all, a satisfying, delicious meal. Customer service and Hospitality were fantastic! Everyone was warm and friendly. We had a constant replenishment of fresh bottles of water and clean plates. Again, kudos to the entire staff. What a pleasure to have experienced Rolo's! Note: they have a lovely outdoor dining area. If it weren't 90 degrees, we wouldn't have minded dining outdoors. read more

Rolo's is the type of restaurant very much en vogue these days across NYC - American classics with a twist. They have a good, not great burger for early arrives, salads, breads, and some other classics. The polenta bread wasn't as good as the pictures looked, but not a bad starter. Croquettes were tasty and pilled with parm. The only real standout for me was the two sheet lasagna. We shared this dish and if I ever returned, I'd probably get one of these tow myself. Very creative and a delicious take on lasagna, though a tad pricey for the portion (but worth it!). We had fun here and worth a try, but a bit overhyped to me. read more

One of my favorite places - I leave here fat and happy every time. Always amazing service but not overbearing. Don't have to dress up. It's comfortable and chill. Visited Rolo's twice, once for brunch and once for dinner. Both meals were very good, and I think I preferred brunch over dinner. Make sure to arrive early to be able to order the burger! The burger is one of my top 5 in NYC. It's charred, smoky and juicy. Their wood fired polenta bread is also good, we had the Calabrian chili with a side of stracciatella cheese, which I recommend. I thought the war-style crispy potatoes were meh, but the crispy potatoes always hits. They are indeed crispy but a bit salty too. The servers are attentive and friendly, the interior is spacious. Definitely work the trek to Ridgewood! read more

A few years back when Rolo's opened in Ridgewood it brought with it major discussions of gentrification that when you google "Ridgewood Gentrification" I am sure Rolo's will be in nearly all the front page links. New York Mag had an extensive Grub Street write up and champions like Jeremy Allen White probably didn't help to alleviate fears of the big G. For me personally whenever I come this far south in Ridgewood I still experience a touch of PTSD from my HS/early college years and the too many times I had to come to bail out a family member from the 104th or help a friend getting in trouble in this area. Unfortunately this area represented a hot spot of the drug trade that plagued the city in late 80s/early 90s. My opinion is having a place like Rolo's is a welcome alternative to those crime filled times and the nearby drug dens that were prevalent in the area. Of course the issue isn't that black and white for all. Despite the history, Ridgewood always had a beauty and cool vibe to the neighborhood represented by its architecture and the working class residents - probably what brought the owners here to make Rolo's home. Rolo's space fits that aesthetic well and I immediately noticed upon arrival. When we first arrived we told the hostess that we had a reservation she looks at the screen, turns to her coworker and says "Brandon Walsh" (probably referring to the 90s "90210" TV show) and he replies oh definitely and they share a chuckle. Witnessing an inside joke wasn't the best start, but the rest of the night made me put that behind me. The service was incredibly attentive hitting every mark throughout the meal. We order "family style" as the waiter encouraged us to do and we had already planned. The polenta bread we ordered was infused with oregano oil - it was a bit overpowering, but overall delicious. We loved the grilled oyster mushrooms it had so much umami. The two sheet lasagna lived up to the hype, but we can see the complaints of lack of filling. We planned on ordering a house dry-aged prime cut, but with the min size being about 32oz it was too much for our party of two - we got the wagyu beef skirt steak instead which was really good, but seemed little more toward blue instead of rare - perhaps I'd get this medium next time. The war style potatoes were really great - we didn't know exactly what made them war style since we stopped the waiter from explaining so it was fun guessing the flavors that made it up - I won't spoil the surprise here. We finished with a French toast with ice cream dessert special. All in all a great experience. If our ordering was tweaked slightly probably would make this 5 stars. read more

Was not planning on eating here but so glad I did! Was passing by on our way somewhere else when one of our group suggested we eat here instead. I didn't think we'd get a table as walk ins but lucky for us with a short wait a table was available. Staff were all very friendly and place was very clean. food was amazing. I had the Caesar salad with steak and it was probably the best Caesar dressing I've had in a long time. The choke hold this place has on me now. My goodness. My dinner reservation was at 7:30 and I'm glad we were still able to order the burger. Our meal was split into 3 course. First we had the polenta bread with chili butter with the heirloom tomato and stonewall fruit salad. Great combination. Then we had the grilled lasagna and as someone who typically don't like lasagna - this was to die for. Last course was the burger and crispy potatoes war style. Get the war style and get it on the side. My goodness. The flavor was orgasmic. I will be back for just the fries alone. read more

Came to Rolo's twice for brunch and had a pretty solid experience both times. There was a little inconsistency in the food and presentation, but not to the point of it being a reason to not return. The first visit was excellent from all aspects. We arrived around 1pm and the restaurant was full but we were able to get a corner table in the front where the bar is. They set us up quickly with a high chair for the baby and started off with coffee and cocktails. The Carrot drink is excellent and was consistently delicious on both visits; it's my favorite cocktail on their list. The spicy pineapple margarita is delicious as well; I would definitely recommend adding the green chartreuse float on top for that extra something-something. On both visits, we ordered the wood fired polenta bread. The first time, it was really delicious - some parts chewy and some parts crispy. The picky baby loved it. The second time, it was all chewy and almost drowning in olive oil and very heavy on the salt; he unfortunately didn't love it that much then. We also got the crispy potatoes both times; the second time we asked for no salt on it to make it more baby friendly. The leafy greens and herb salad is so delicious; simple but flavorful. It's a perfect salad in my book. We also ordered the delicata squash and their special, the smoked salmon, and both dishes were great as well. On my second visit, I tried the famed burger. While it was very full of flavor and delicious, it was also very oily and there was a pool of oil on the plate. It made the bun wet and soggy. It was served with a huge pickled pepper though, which was a great compliment to balance the unctuousness of the burger, and towards the end, had a great spicy kick as well. Overall, Rolo's is great for brunch, and I hope to come back for dinner sans baby to try the "war style" crispy potatoes as well as their dinner items, which looks great. read more

First time at Rolo's and I was super impressed with how attentive and friendly the entire staff was. Everyone there genuinely seemed to love their job! smiles from ear to ear, which is rare to see these days. The host seated us right away, and from the drinks to the food, everything was perfect. Every single person who brought something to our table was so kind and pleasant. The restaurant itself is surprisingly spacious, you'd never guess from how modest the front looks. Beautiful ambiance and intimate lighting throughout. My only comment is that our server was the only one wearing a fitted cap. I didn't think that was part of the dress code, especially given the restaurant's upscale, polished aesthetic. The fitted cap felt a bit too casual for the setting and made our interaction slightly awkward since it covered his eyes and made eye contact difficult. While he was friendly and professional -the hat took away from the otherwise elevated vibe of the restaurant. Overall, I'd definitely come back! everything else was exceptional. read more

Rolos has definitely became one of our favorite restaurants over night. My boyfriend and I think of this place regularly and salivate over the idea of taking another bite of their smoky burger. My boyfriend and I have visited Rolo's about twice now. With each time as good as the next. We always order the same things because it made such an impact the first time, but the next time we're back, we'll definitely have to try something new. Our staples? The burger is a must; it's smoky, juicy, buttery, and just so much goodness in such a simple combination of bread, beef, and cheese. The lasagna is thin crusted, crispy, light cheesy flavor, and just so different from the heavy lasagnas we are normally used to. The war fries are good, but in my opinion, the sauce can be a little much so get it on the side. And the polenta bread is smoky from the wood fired oven, yet so flavorful and soft. It literally just melts in your mouth. The waiters are always extremely friendly, it's pretty casual, but there's a warm inviting ambiance that comes with the dim lighting and romantic touches of the restaurant. Overall, Rolos has won our heart, and we can definitely see why it's a favorite of queens. TLDR; great food, warm ambiance. read more

Service was better than average. They were very attentive. Ambiance was nice with candles on the tables. The food was decent, but lacking wow factor. The Calabrian chili butter polenta fried had some kick to it. It reminded me of Chinese chili oil. The lasagna look prettier than it tasted. The red sauce was spare and lacking on the sides of the lasagna and there was a lump of red sauce in the middle of the piece. I think they should add more sauce. The sides were burnt and so it tasted a little more like bread in an odd way to me. The double cheeseburger was tasty and juicy included onions, but it didn't have anything distinctly in flavor that would make me crave it. Overall, a nice place to visit, but not somewhere I'd go repeatedly. 4 stars for service. But the food would be a 3/5. We did walk in on a weekday at 5pm and there was no line. I noticed the staff all seem pretty young which I don't see often in restaurants. read more

Finally got to try Rolo's, and I was seriously impressed by the quality of the meal. Took my dad out for his birthday, and we ended up ordering a good chunk of the menu. Here's the breakdown: Apps: -Polenta Bread (Flaky Sea Salt & Sesame w/ Wild Oregano) - 8/10 Perfectly fluffy and charred, with just the right amount of seasoning. Solid on its own, but I'd recommend pairing it with something for dipping. -Stracciatella - 9/10 Paired beautifully with the polenta bread. Think: the creamy inside of burrata topped with seasoning reminiscent of za'atar. So, so tasty. -Hamachi Crudo - 10/10 Sleeper hit. The unexpected yogurt-like base leaned more Mediterranean than Japanese, and it just worked. Large Plates: -Branzino - 9/10 Unexpectedly amazing. The mayo base and mushrooms brought everything together in the best way. -Wagyu Skirt Steak - 8/10 Really solid, but not mind-blowing. -Two-Sheet Lasagna - 7/10 Super unique take on lasagna--worth trying for the texture and presentation alone. Just felt like it could've used a bit more flavor. We shared a side of crispy potatoes, which were good, but I have a feeling the war-style ones would've been better. Couldn't order those due to a nut allergy at the table. Overall, Rolo's is definitely hyped right now, and I get why. It has the feel of a true neighborhood spot but elevates it with unexpected flavor combinations. The service was top-notch--genuinely hospitable, with a team that's proud of what they're serving, which makes the whole experience even better. Can't wait to come back and try the burger. read more

A short day and a half stay in Williamsburg/Brooklyn on the way to Berlin. Rolo's was certainly the most anticipated spot on this tour after seeing their fantastic Eater video and it certainly didn't disappoint. Their Double Cheeseburger with the $3 Bacon Addition was the most flavorful and wonderfully textured burger I've had in years. The pickled pepper made for an interesting off-beat accompaniment. The polenta bread was simple but delicious. A layer of polenta with olive oil and sea salt, could eat that all day. I also ordered a Strawberry Passionfruit Punsch, which was served in a small goblet. Nice blend of rum, strawberry cordial, passion fruit and lime tiki bitters. There are quite a few more dishes I'd like to try at Rolo's. Unfortunately for me, Rolo's in in a different time zone. But I'm glad I got a chance to try it. read more

Mostly came for the burger, which truly lived up to the hype. The menu advises that you arrive earlier in the day as this may sell out by 1 PM- we came for brunch around noon and had no trouble ordering the double cheeseburger with bacon. It was a great burger. Was it life-changing, no- but was it super worth getting for brunch especially at the price it was offered? Yes! The other menu options are...fine. Nothing super thrilling. We went with the arctic char, which was similar to seasoned lox. While the fish itself was fine (especially with the dipping sauce it came with), the polenta bread offered on the side was the real star. The bread (either as a side or app) is absolutely a must! We also opted for the potatoes on the side, war style. I'm not sure which war this is styled after, as I don't remember learning about the war of mayo & peanut sauce, but this was an excellent addition to the meal. It wasn't overly crowded on the Saturday brunch we went, but making a reservation is not a bad idea. It's a little strange that such a large restaurant has only one bathroom. The drinks options are fairly varied and we opted for the two chilled reds, which were both delicious. read more

I made reservations for a surprise brunch for my husband on Father's Day. I was told my mutual friends that I should make them far in advance. I got to the restaurant at 11am when they opened and there was line but we were sat down quickly. The nice host had us seated within seconds. We were walked back passing the front big room waitress hallway and fire oven kitchen that is in the open where you can see the chefs cooking. I love the small details to the aesthetic of the restaurant. The decoration and floor plan was very well thought out. I mean it was just absolutely stunning! The waiter was so nice and I forgot his name even though I asked but he was slim tall with a short sleeved button down polo and black hair I believe with gages. Well anyway I mentioned that because he hands down was so efficient and knew all the details (even the small ones) to the questions my husband has about the menu. I always hear you must get there earlier for their burgers and ohhhh myyyyy god! The burger which was on the special with extra add on option of bacon, I was blown away. My husband got this steak dish with salad which had the perfect combination. The dessert was excellent as well , we did split it due to us being so full. Again from start to finish this restaurant exceeded my expectations! Thank you all at Rolo's for the perfect Father's Day meal! read more

IMPECCABLE. after snagging and rescheduling a few times, i finally made my way over to Ridgewood! there was a line as soon as the place opened and it quickly filled up. of course i studied the menu before i showed up but i did veer off the course and tried something different. we got these to try: -polenta bread with calabrian chili butter: sooooo airy and soft on the inside and a nice chew on the outside. the calabrian chili butter was a nice touch but a tad over-the-top. -pork ragu pappardelle (daily special): perfectly cooked, al-dente pasta with rich and unctuous pork ragu. it was very well-balanced and left me wanting more. -double cheeseburger: thiiiiiick and meaty but kinda underwhelming at the same time? the flavor was good but it's really hard to mess up a burger... we had high expectations for this and it was just ok IMO. -crispy potatoes "war style": big chunks of fried potatoes and topped with aioli, a super spicy peanut sauce, and chopped onions. the potatoes had great texture but peanut sauce (possible Indonesian influence...?) was very spicy and a tad overpowering. -rhubarb almond tart: just the right amount of sweetness and served with a beautiful creme anglaise. -white negroni & tonic: super refreshing! -ruby port: love Kopke and that's what they stocked. service was awesome, attentive but not intrusive. i really enjoyed my experience here and would love to go back! read more

If i were just judging the burger, would give Rolo's a 5 star review. It was absolutely delicious and lived up to the hype I had read all about online! I also really enjoyed the war fries, which were crispy potato wedges with a spicy peanut sauce and mayo (I'm a sucker for anything peanut!!). At $15, I didn't think the mortadella was particularly worth it. It was good, but I've had better elsewhere at a lower price. The lasagna was a bit overdone, so I got more taste of the char versus flavor of the pasta/filling. I think rolos is a great spot to try once to get the burger (get there early to make sure you get it since we apparently had gotten the last one at around 7pm), but I don't think the rest of the menu is worth going out of the way for. read more

Our server was really nice and she took the time to explain dishes and give her recs. The food honestly was better than my expectations: - grilled oyster mushrooms (4/5): simple but delicious - beet salad (4/5): not a traditional salad but very fresh and great flavors - pastrami arctic char with polenta bread (5/5): this was special. Wow that polenta bread was perfect. - crispy potatoes "war style" (4.5/5): love the peanut sauce mayo combo. The peanut sauce was very powerful but tasted balanced with the mayo. We only had one hiccup, which was that their steamer wasn't really working so the cappuccino was disappointing. Wouldn't come back for the coffee but definitely would for the food!! read more

Had been hearing a lot about Rolos for a really long time and finally decided to make my way down there and try it. The cocktails were pretty good and the food was great but we would only consider returning with a different server. Our server was friendly but he was very pushy and very adamant on upselling us on almost everything. We were a party of four and had already ordered cocktails and a different entree each but was persistent that we order appetizers, more than once. Then when we finally said yes he brought out an appetizer that contained a food restriction for two people in our party so they were not able to even eat it (he did bring out another one on the house but it was already something we didn't really want). The ambiance in the restaurant was great, classic Italian fine dining vibes. Aside from that the food was pretty good but nothing out of the ordinary, there are lots of good restaurants in New York, you won't regret trying this one, but you'll live if you don't. read more

Is this place is far and a bit out of the way if you're coming from Manhattan? Yes. But is it worth it? Also yes. Did I see Jeremy Allen White? Unfortunately no. However, was the food good? Absolutely. We started with the Calabrian chilli bread, which definitely had a kick. And then I had the ricotta ravioli, which was phenomenal. My sister got the infamous lasagna and I wish I could've had it (I don't eat meat and it's a bolognese filling) but it smelled so. Good. "Rolos burger.. you have to try the Rolos burger" ... "limited quantity you have to get there early if you want to get the burger" ... "Have you had the burger from Rolos?? It's soooo good... but get there early if you want the burger..." That's what they all say. And what I have to say is that everything they say is true. But what is it with the scarcity mindset? Yes, the burger is amazing but... I wonder.. was it so amazing because of how long I have been trying to have it? Perhaps. Perhaps not. But I'm left wondering. I do think it is objectively an amazing burger and maybe the element of *chase* makes for a fun little adrenaline rush. And when you are denied the burger I guess it forces you to try something else.. and they have a lot of good things on the menu. I had a great experience at Rolo's! We arrived around 5 pm when they open and there was already a pretty big crowd inside. I opted to try a walk in instead of reserving, and luckily since the space is quite big, there were a good amount of available tables for walk-in so we were seated promptly. We were told that the burger was limited, and obviously I had to get it because it was the sole reason why I came. I ordered the burger, the war fries, the beet salad, pickled carrots, and their bread pudding special. The pickled carrots were a pass, as much as I like carrots they weren't very pickled. They were more like sliced carrots in a vinaigrette. The beet salad was delicious. The first bite of the burgers was great. The bread kept its integrity and the meat was very fatty and juicy. My only complaint is that I wish that there was some sort of acid to cut through the greasiness of the burger. By the time I was halfway through I had no desire to eat any more due how heavy it felt. Fries are okay I wouldn't get them next time. The cinnamon bread pudding was outstanding. I'm really glad that I tried this restaurant and I would definitely recommend it. read more

Definitely recommend getting a resy for Rolo's! The walk in wait can be a little long. Service was warm and welcoming and the space is big but dimly lit (for dinner service), creating an intimate setting. We ordered the polenta bread app with the chili butter and while we enjoyed the bread, the spread was not our favorite. We also ordered the wagyu steak - delicious and perfectly cooked- with a side of war style potatoes (yum!!). Instead of the three sheet lasagna, we went for their regular pasta with bolognese, which disappointed us a bit. Overall, solid dinner spot whether for date night or small group gatherings. We will definitely be back for the war style potatoes and to try their burgers. read more

Rolo's - Polenta bread - Sandwiches Near Me - Ridgewood, New York

So glad to finally make it to Ridgewood and experience the Rolo's magic for myself! I made sure to book an early table in order to secure one of their famed burgers (spoiler alert: I ordered an extra because it's just that good). Even though the restaurant opens for dinner service at 5pm, by the time we arrived for our 5:30pm reservation, the entire restaurant was pretty much packed. We started off with their daily special, a grilled hamachi collar ($26) with a sticky miso glaze with flesh so tender and silky you'd hardly believe it was fish. We also ordered a sesame + wild oregano polenta bread ($10) and a Calabrian chili butter polenta bread ($13) as they were featured heavily on social media. I thought the texture of the polenta breads were so unique-- they really reminded me of mochi bread as they were slightly chewy and very fluffy despite the thin crackly crust. I think I preferred the Calabrian chili butter over the sesame, though the latter would be perfect for a za'atar lover. Along with the two cheeseburgers ($18 ea), we also ordered the famous two sheet lasagna ($32) and a leafy greens + herbs salad ($15) and "war style" crispy potatoes ($12) as sides. The lasagna was pretty charred and the pasta sheets were quite thick, like dumpling wrappers. But, it really was the burgers that stole the show-- fatty, juicy, oozing with beefy, cheesy flavor and dressed with garlicky onions. We absolutely loved the unassuming long hot that came with the burger, which was not only pickled but smoked as well, which added on so many layers of flavor and provided the perfect sweet and acidic contrast to the decadent burger. The "war style" potatoes were crispy wedges with a healthy dollop of mayo, a peanut-forward satay sauce, and raw onions-- these were quite familiar to me as the original Dutch version, called patatje oorlog, was a late night favorite of mine during my travels. The salad came with a mountain of frisée, chives, and dill all tossed in a zingy dijonaise dressing that provided a necessary acidic component to an otherwise rich and heavy meal. We also had a passionfruit pot de crème ($12) for dessert and it was very delicately set with a soft creamy texture. Although the custard portion was very vanilla-forward, the passionfruit curd on the bottom was a nice touch to balance the dessert. Overall, we were very pleased with our meal and absolutely loved the service as well. The servers were very knowledgeable about the menu and very attentive to detail as well. One thing I will add is that the tables are quite small, especially for the two-seaters. Even as a party of four, I thought the booths were on the smaller side as well. The restaurant space is pretty long and I would recommend avoiding the bar area as it gets quite loud, and trying to snag a table by the oven instead. read more

I landed at JFK and was craving a burger so my friend suggested going here. I got my rental car and drove to Rolo's with my friend and ordered the burger. The burger was not bad but far the best. It was a little bit on the burnt side (bread/meat/toppings) and that overpowered the flavor of the meat. Fries weren't good either. My friend got some green lasagna dish and it was also a bit too burnt. Drinks were good and staff was nice, but honestly I don't think I'd come back here based on this experience. read more
