The anti Valentine's Day party!
Carolina S.

This Valentines I stopped at this little bar in Ridgewood and was so happy I did. I had been to my other favorite bar in the area and it was freeeezzzing! So I decided to finally check out The Bad Old Days. I love the name and the bar surpassed my expectations. It didn't take me long to notice the Chex Mix on the top shelf in the kitchen! Yes, please! Order up! It's only three bucks too. I quickly made friends with the regulars Jose "the Mailman" and Mister G. In the time while I was there I met the Mrs. and his oldest son. A super friendly crowd here where people try to out buy their friends. You almost can't get a tab. Everyone is so generous and that is so rare these days. I also had great conversations with one of the owners/bartender Sonja like Bologna (Italy). She was very sweet and informative about the bar. I can't believe it's only 3 months old. She said a majority of the stuff was thrifted or found on the street. It gave the bar a welcoming, living room feel. I was especially amused when I spotted the Rosie O'Donnell doll amongst the booze bottles! Ha! The chef Dylan was funny and explained the menu thoroughly. You can tell that's it's a great place to work at and a better place to drink at! And I also heard people raving about the "wangs". I loved the anti-Valentines napkins. "Wine is my Valentine", so true! And at the end of the night I even got a free koozie. Where the bar slogan is "making bad decisions in good company". And I would like to note that the bar has a little cabinet at the bar where you pay $100 and you get to keep a bottle of booze at the bar. Of course, the mailman had a stash in there. Hilarious!

a menu on a brick wall

Highly recommend this local spot for a casual drink at a super reasonable price. When we went for the first time, it was the bar tenders first day but you'd have no idea! She was so kind and accommodating even when we ordered 2 orders of pigs in the blanket and chicken nuggets. Check this place out if you're in the area!

Classic trek in a classic living room bar!

Cozy, friendly bar. Great staff, great pricing. Sonja and Rina are on the ball and bar tending pros. Both have worked upscale and very busy bars and restaurants, so they're super capable. They don't have food yet, but they said it's coming by the end of the month. Should be little snacks and easy bar bites, nothing too bougie or pricy. It's happy hour until 8 Monday through Friday, and they're open 2- 2. Weekends they will do mimosa carafes and micheladas and other brunchy stuff!

I frickin love this place. The interior decorating and overall vibe is so warm and inviting and not only that-- all the people who frequent this bar are kind working people. I can always count on this place for a great beer/shot deal and reasonable happy hour. So happy I found this spot. Much love xoxo

Warm and inviting - great speciality cocktails.

It's not bad, but I think I got food poisoning from a martini here? Kind of impressive tbh.

It was topped with crispy potatoes string fries. On top of a subtle relish. And a crispy hot dog. It was so delicious. My wife at the non meat pierogi. The dough and filling had the perfect ratio. Cooked very well as the dough didnt have an firmy or overly cooked bites. And the onion topping had such a great sweet finish. Can't wait to come back for dinner. Bonus- I just adore the space. The details and the feeling of calm was great.

The interior evoked elements of interwar and Communist-era Poland. The wooden booths, bar stools, glass paneling, and light fixtures created a homey yet bright atmosphere, and even the bathroom carried through the historic aesthetic. The plates were also done in a traditional Polish pottery style. Given the name of the establishment, we had to try the pierogi. Aside from the meat (z mięsem) and sauerkraut & mushroom (z kapustą i grzybami), there were also potato & cheese (ruskie), ranging from $14-$16 for lunch. Each order came with six pierogi and were filling enough that we had some leftover to bring home. The pierogi z kapustą i grzybami were traditional, with a filling that had nice flavor and texture, though I think they could have used a bit less dill on top. The pierogi z mięsem were more non-traditional, incorporating beef cheek alongside pork. These were also very good, with tender meat. We also ordered the pickled cucumbers, onions, and mushrooms (kiszonki), which provided a nice contrast in both texture and flavor to the pierogi. The menu included inventive cocktails incorporating Polish flavors like apple cake (szarlotka) and beet (burak). I'd come back for dinner to try both the cocktails and the more extensive evening menu. Aside from the restaurant, there is also a market in the space. Most of the inventory consisted of assorted non-perishables like sauces and jams from across the US, with less of a focus on Polish products than traditional "polskie sklepy" around Ridgewood. There was also a deli counter, though it was fairly limited. I had planned on buying Polish herbal tea, but the tea selection consisted of only a few black teas. The coffee selection was larger, though mostly brands you'd find in any supermarket. Overall, a welcome addition to Ridgewood that both keeps Polish culture alive and feels fresh and contemporary.

It had a pretty raunchy feel with an older crowd, sitting somewhere between a pub and a dive bar. The door was broken and the cups by the water looked dirty. I wouldn't even bother with the popcorn machine... This is all just my observations. The only decent thing this place had going was the cheap drinks. After buying a drink, you're given a 'chip' that can be redeemed for a free one, which is an interesting concept... Still, overall it just wasn't my vibe...

The place is really small with limited seating inside as well as enclosed outdoor seating and tables/stools along the outside. Such a diverse crowd! They have 2 entrances. One the side and the front. It was way too busy inside so we chose to sit in the covered outdoor section. If you do that, be prepared for a lot of smoke and pigeon feathers flying around! We were okay with that! When you order a drink here, you get a wooden token which will get you your next drink free! This happened the entire time we were there. We had a total of 4 drinks each with 2 of them each being free! That will definitely have me coming back for more. There's no other place that does that. No jukebox, but the music they played was decent. Total dive bar atmosphere. Service was fine. Love the free popcorn with fixings station. Fresh hot popcorn with Old Bay is delicious with a nice, cold drink. All you can eat of it, too. Although I saw 1 patron go up 10 times for it! Talk about overkill. They serve hot dogs for a buck as well! Now the bathroom was pretty gross. Hardly any light. Stinky and no place to dry your hands. Did I expect a 4 star bathroom experience here? Absolutely not, but give me a working hand dryer or paper towel please. The shocker of the night was when I closed out my tab. For those 4 drinks we got charged for, it came out to $13.50! Uhh....what?! That's insane. Cheapest happy hour drinks ever. Did I get a headache from the well liquor they used for these drinks? Definitely. Was it worth it for that price. You know it! I'll be back.

The space itself is intimate, fairly small but utilized well. Bench tables and bar seating with a TV, fake fireplace, and a throwback arcade game. The bartender was so friendly and welcoming. Dark but not in a pretentious way. When we went on a Saturday afternoon, it was essentially just us and a few isolated people at the bar. We played a board game we had brought and had a great time. The beers themselves were not my favorite. There is a good variety and the prices are super agreeable, but I wasn't really thrilled by any of the IPA choices specifically. Probably just me. My biggest gripe with the place, however, is the music. I appreciate that this is super dependent on who is working but for a darkly lit brewery, I wouldn't have chosen the classic/elevator/slow music that was playing overhead. Parking is super easy. Also, I am very curious in their connection to the leather making studio next door and would be interested in the pop-ups that happen here once monthly!
