So I look up this place, Gottscheer Hall, because my German friends said it was classic or something. A quick look from the outside, we'll, it looks like some kind of place where they keep really historic things and serious beers. Also outside are these big blue awnings, not trying to be all fancy, probably for weddings where locals use a side I've never been. ​The inside has got this big old wood bar and a few tired ceiling fans above. It looks like the kind of place where old and young, guys and gals go to eat, drink and make merry. The Queens Chronicle has a picture posted inside '100 years of good cheer,' it says. So I ordered all this German grub and our it came all at once, all laid out looking absolutely delicious. Just look at the giant pretzel. It's sitting there with some wonderful yellow cheese dip, and the platters of sausages, potato pancakes, and sauerkraut, it's all so heavy and seriously yummy. They've even got a bunch of beer bottles lined up under these little blue lights, like they're trying to match the blue awnings, I loved the look myself, i love anything that reminds me of Christmas. ​The dessert with the massive meringue on top of a brownie. It wasvreal good! ​If I ever went to this place ahain, I'd probably just drink beer and eat pie while staring at my giant pretzel for a while. read more

German beer hall. Large space for private events. We grabbed a beer at the bar upfront. Mostly (if not all) German beers on tap. Big breweries like Hofbrau and Franziskaner were represented. I had their namesake beer - the Gottschee 1330. If I was forced to guess, then I'd probably go with it being Hofbrau original. It was a light and crisp beer. Solid head. Served cold in a half liter mug making it a great beverage on a hot afternoon. Service was quick. They had several TVs around the bar playing football. I am actually a Gottscheer, and my Grandfather and Grandmother came here in the 1940s from Gottschee. Now we do not own it, or work there or anything like that at all. This is run/managed by the various member club/organizations that meet there. If you don't mind a dated style, this place is perfect for any occasion! They have 2 main ballrooms which can be used separately, or combined. 1 side has a built in stage. I believe they did a nice renovation a few years back. So it is a tad bit less dated hahaha! The bar is what most people come here for. I remember coming here for events as a very small child and they had a pool table there! $1 a game if I remember correctly. To bad its been gone for years! The bar is beautiful! Solid wood and would probably withstand a nuclear blast lol! Staff is super friendly. I would like to add that Mr. Rom was a staple there for MANY years and he is deeply missed by all that remember him. Most people that come here are regulars, because unless you know, you don't know. It is a few blocks off the beaten path, and there is horrible parking! Food is pretty cheap and solid! From their pretzels to their schnitzel, its all super yummy. You cold bring a date here and feast like kings or queens for $50 including drinks. Most apps are $5-7 and entrees max out at $12. Do not forget dessert! Their apple strudel is amazing, I also love their bread pudding. Drinks are similar, nice and cheap! average beer is $4 lol! Great on tap selection as well as bottled options. All are great. I came to this establishment with an acquaintance on a Sunday and i didn't realize the restaurant don't open til 4 pm so I sat at the bar for an hour which was fine because the Mets baseball was on to keep me entertained. The bar is open at 1 on the weekends if people need a drink in the area. So, 4:00 came and I was told the restaurant was all in the back of the building outside. The waiter was friendly and gave us our menu. I ordered the most expensive dish on the menu for 14.99 which was the beef goulash which I'm a fan of at many Eastern European restaurants and this one in particular was German. My acquaintance ordered the bratwurst with half sauerkraut and half potato salad which is not on the menu and it was something the waiter kindly offered. The food came and it look ok. My dish not the food looked heavily used like when it was first opened in 1924. They couldn't just throw their old dishes and get new dishes apparently. My food itself was really bad. Beef itself was dry and stew was bland. I hardly ever add salt to my food but this dish desperately needed it. Also, no vegetables like carrots or potatoes that a goulash may have. Noodles look and tasted like mush, bland and it didn't help mixing it in with the bland goulash. I think this dish was meant to be served and eaten to senior citizens because it looked and tasted something that might be served at senior center. Final verdict: Me and my acquaintance were the only people actually here for the food and not the bar. If you come here, stay at the bar, watch the game, and if ur hungry the sausage and pretzels aren't bad. My extended family and I went here for a gathering and sat in the back catering room. There was plenty of seating to accommodate a much larger crowd than ours, as well as a stage and large dance floor. The building is a good old German hall and is easy to find with large signs outside. There are multiple levels and rooms for large gatherings as well as a good sized bar up front for those wishing to stop in casually. This was my first time here, but I could tell this is a place where friends are made and everybody knows your name. Parking can be a bit tough depending on the time of day, but there are plenty of side streets to scour for a spot. There are bathrooms on both the main level and downstairs which are all kept clean. I must simply rave about the food! My family consists of mostly Germans and we truly appreciate a good solid German meal. Our family buffet had a big crispy salad, mashed potatoes, chicken cutlets, roast pork, roast beef, seasoned veggies and of course sauerkraut. Everything was so tender, juicy and perfectly seasoned. The sauerkraut was Bavarian style with bacon...yummmmmmmm. We enjoyed pitchers of Spaten as well which paired perfectly with our meals. For dessert, we had a massive slice of cheesecake. The waiter was absolutely amazing, accommodating our large party with ease. The kitchen staff was also outstanding and we took home so much food to enjoy later. Our family friend had worked here in years past and she was treated like family at this restaurant. They also treated us wonderfully today and we had an excellent time. Gottscheer Hall has been around for so long. It's a neighborhood staple. Unfortunately with the influx of lumberjack/twig legged Hipsters infiltrating Ridgewood and the surrounding area, they make going here and having a good time frustrating! Getting a table here can be super hard on the weekends. Especially when there's a Ridgewood Market event. If you want a table when a night market is happening, definitely get in before 5 PM. For Sunday brunch, if you're not here by 10:30, you'll NEVER get a bar stool, table, etc. These obnoxious Hipsters take over everything. Even after they finished drinking and eating, they still just sit and take up everything. With no respect because they see the huge crowd gathering waiting for any spot to sit. Even noticed one Hipster family put their child up on a table and have her dance. With her shoes on. On a dining establishments table. How rude can these idiots be?? Enough with my hatred for these fools and on to the dining experience itself. You seat yourself. Not a huge amount of tables, but enough. Service is a bit slow, but friendly. The lovely accented male bartender came and took our order but never brought us our drinks. We got them towards the end of our meal. Prices are very reasonable and the drinks are strong and they have a good variety of different house cocktails. The menu isn't huge, but what they do have is homey and delicious. Total comfort food. I've only ever had the Three Cheese Baked Spaetzle which is heaven in your mouth for eight bucks. Perfectly cooked dumplings with lots of gooey, oozing cheese. Mmmmmm!! The German Potato Salad is extremely authentic and spot on! When the Hipsters aren't invading the place, the vibe is really chill and relaxed with regulars and locals who've been in the area for decades. REAL Ridgewoodites. I had the German potato pancakes with apple sauce. I liked the way the apple sauce was generously sprinkled with cinnamon. The dish overall was okay. However, both bartenders were extremely kind. The female bartender asked me how my food was. But I hope Gottscheer doesn't stop serving food. It's nice to find a place where you can eat and drink within your means. So I'll probably order some dishes from here again. The best part of this whole entire place is the vibe. From the sweet employees, chill locals, and people just enjoying themselves. I really, really love this place, I think I might even be bold enough to call it my favorite bar in NYC. it's a complete magical time capsule to old school New York that resembles a 70s era YMCA with old pictures of "Miss Gottscheer" beauty pageant winners, and a banquet hall in back hosting quinceaneras and such while a tea room-looking German beer garden bar takes place in the front serving delicious cuisine and sporting oldies on the jukebox. Including a diverse mix of clientele including working class Queens people, old german folk, normies and hipsters. Not to mention it's inexpensive and lively but never super packed. When I took my friend from Canada here she said it seemed like something out a fantasy, and I also find this true. You really can't find many places like this these days. Just an excellent, unique place that if you're looking to fill your craving for authentic New York or just a fun place to drink and eat good sausage and pretzel than look no further. read more

I'm torn. I love this place. I had never been here before, but my dearest friend recently moved around the block, and as she's aware of my fondness on all things German (beer, men, food), she suggested we go here the weekend my (now estranged) wife and I visited her in her new hood. This place is great. It smells like sauerkraut, the bar is small and simple, they have a short tap list but the beers are varied enough to cover your taste (miller lite::vom::, spatan, hoeegarden), a decent bar selection and a lot of bottled beer. The menu is German (YUM), and even though I had just destroyed two slices at Rosa's I was tempted to go Lt Aldo Raine on some brats. The bartender was friggin adorable AND - here's the kicker kids - the 1.5 pints are 5 beans. Peanut sized beers are like 3 bucks. Boom. I can get lit up here nice and cheap. And there are tables where I can attempt to teach my "special" friends how to play cards. **note: if the friggin card in the middle falls between the two outer cards YOU WIN Blondie. For the Love of God I'm not even the Brains of the group and I know how to play acey-deucy** Anyway, I'm hesitant to give this 5 stars simply because as we were enjoying some delightful banter and beer-swilling card play, we were legit over run by hipsters. Seeing as I come here almost weekly, I figure it is time to write an account of Gottscheer Hall that is more than 4 lines long. Whatever random parties rent out the catering hall in the rear or wander in off the street, Gottscheer Hall is foremost a diaspora community's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gottschee_County) central hive. The maps, memorials, and Miss Gottschee portraits on the walls serve to remind the rest of us will always be (welcome) visitors. It's useful to think of this place slightly different than one would an average restaurant or bar. As a bar, the Gottscheer Hall Tap Room is one of the best watering holes in Ridgewood. Rarely busy unless someone is having a party, this is a low-key space to sit with a few friends at night or even read the paper during the afternoon. The space dates to the 20s(?) but appears to have been most recently renovated in the 60s(?) given the drop-ceilng. The feel is classic, and light pours in the large plate window during the day. The (conventional, not internet) jukebox holds a mix of classic rock-n-roll (think Seeger, Springsteen, CSNY, Beatles, Petty, Joel, etc) and a sprinking of German-language discs. The jukebox is typically pre-loaded with credits, so anyone can step up and punch some songs in without adding cash. I've seen everything from PBS to the X-Games to football on the small, typically-muted televisions. The Gluhwein (German mulled wine) is only $3/cup and hits the spot in the winter. On tap are a small selection of beers, including Spaten, Hofbrauhaus, and Gosser. Overall, the Tap Room is a cozy, calming environment, although the crowd can vary widely, depending on the night. Live bands play on occasion. Food is served Wednesday through Saturday evenings. I can't stop eating the 3-cheese baked spaetzle (think mac-and-cheese, with the macaroni replaced by homemade German noodles). It probably isn't healthy. Meat fans will find all manner of goulash, pork chops, and sausages. read more

The tap room at Gottscheer Hall is the type of place that probably has looked the same for at least a decade. The same five to ten men are there every night, ordering the same beers, telling the same jokes, and popping quarters in the jukebox to play the same 80's rock favorites. The night me and a friend decided to go was just before Halloween, and the main ballroom (if you can call it that) was filled with a party for children all dressed up in their cute costumes. Although not much dancing was taking place, I could hear the chicken dance and electric slide coming from the hall. That finally cleared out on this Friday night around 9:30pm, but the tap room stays open until at least midnight on weekends, depending on the crowd. They serve dinner from Wednesday through Sunday, and it is worth coming here for the experience of the whole place, even if the German food will not completely knock your socks off. Although he became annoying to the point of anger, our neighbor at the bar began a conversation with us before we had even sat down. It is just that type of place, where even two young kids living far away from Ridgewood can come in and feel very welcome immediately. They carry a couple bad US beers and a few good German beers, usually poured in the correct glassware in metric sizes. You will notice small signs on the tables advertising a $1 beer in the 0.3L size with any food purchase. Make sure to take advantage of this at some point during the evening. On the specials the night we went was the sauerbraten dinner ($12.50), a big plate that comes with potatoes and red cabbage. The potatoes will be enjoyed, especially with the tangy gravy poured over the meat. The red cabbage is so-so, while the meat itself is on the dry side. It's fine with that sauce, but I found that a bite should probably include the potato as well. Did someone say three-cheese spaetzle ($8)? When the bartender did in fact say these words, we jumped at the chance to eat it. Unfortunately it did not live up to expectations, as the noodles were soft and dead and the whole thing just tasted too similar to macaroni and cheese. That being said, it was not terrible, it just was not like spaetzle. Between courses we enjoyed another round or two of $5 beers in half-liter mugs, an absolute steal even for Ridgewood. Eventually the promise of apple strudle ($3) came, but even this disappointed. Besides coming about 30 minutes later, it was just a microwaved dish. Unfortunately the black forest cake ($3) that was on the menu was not available. Despite the fact that I have not said so many nice things about the food, I would come back here in a heartbeat. The place has charm, and the experience of it is definitely worth any distance and time you have to take to get here. The service is friendly and you are treated like family on your first visit. They have a bunch of memorabilia on the walls that is worth a look, and a big map of the Gottschee region, where the first immigrants who started this place were from. That region is now in current day Slovenia, and this place has no German accents, but it is all still very pure somehow. read more

Gottscheer Hall seemed like an interesting place to check out, especially for fans of Zum Stammtisch. But the two are very far apart. We stopped by here one busy night during a Ridgewood Eats event. The venue was crowded, but we were lucky (or so we thought) to get seats at the bar. That's mostly where our first Gottscheer Hall experience ended. We waited to order drinks for some time--it was more than 15 minutes but I don't want to say as much as a half hour. One member of the bar staff spent the duration of the time going through past checks, while another was taking orders from patrons all over the place. I was willing to continue waiting, but then a waitress put several stacked plates of used dishes (with half-eaten food still on them) right in front of one of my friends sitting at the bar. Our order still wasn't taken and the dishes sat there for a few minutes. Since those didn't seem to be moving, we did. We opted for Julia's, which isn't at all the same at Gottscheer, but it was a far more enjoyable experience. I understand some places move at a slower pace than others, but the service was downright awful and rude. Don't host large events if you can't keep up. And use the kitchen to stock dirty dishes, not bars where patrons are looking to pay. read more

I almost don't want to write this review. Why? Because I love this place so darn much and the thought of not being able to get a seat at the bar or the bartender forgetting my name, makes me shudder. Then again, the thought of it going out of business makes me weep, so here we go... It is the middle of December, the M train isn't running to Ridgewood and mounds of snow are still piled in the streets from the last big nor'easter. And it is my birthday. My 30th birthday to be precise. Despite the overwhelming odds, I held my party at Gottscheer Hall and those who came were rewarded with not only my best birthday ever, but one of the greatest nights out of their lives (I'm assuming). When we arrived, we were told that the chef wanted to go home so instead of leaving us to go hungry, we were given a tray of sausage and peppers and rolls on the house, more than enough for all of us to share. We then spent the night sharing a few dozen pitchers of good German beer, bought for well below Manhattan prices and taking advantage of their free jukebox, which filled the room with classic rock and polka music. Sometime near midnight, a friend sat at the baby grand in the back and an impromptu karaoke session began, creating a scene that would have made Chris Columbus jealous with its cliched cheesyness. I've been back many times since for dinner, which is always wholesome and never disappointing, and cheap weekday drinks. Wow, what a Gem. This is a one of a kind bar in New York City. Me and my friend just happened to stumble by this place right after the Germany vs USA world cup game. Everyone was friendly to one another, everyone was up for a conversation. It's one of those place where everyone is constantly talking without missing a beat, but somehow the noise level never gets too high. Everyone knows how to behave because it is a mature crowd, and they are all regulars from the area who show respect to their community neighbors. It's unfortunate that the bar will be closed temporarily for renovation for 2 weeks, which is right in middle of World Cup season when Germany is heading into the round of 16, and probably advance. Oh well, guess plans are plans. Too bad I wouldn't find a bar that's as mature and friendly as Gottscheer. I come here from time to time with my wife to eat bratwurst or krainerwurst with sauerkraut or potatoes. The prices are ridiculously cheap for the quality of the food. The beer selection isn't as good as other beer houses but it's enough. Service has always been excellent and in terms of friendliness of staff it's the best I've had in Ridgewood so far (I've lived in the area for 2 years now). I went to Gottscheer Hall for the first time last Saturday night. It was a really great time! It has the feel of a German VFW Hall. They've got a couple beers on tap, we had the only German sounding one on tap (can't remember the name) it was $5 for a large mug. Good deal. They also had some hot toddies (It's crazy cold in NY right now) and something called Gluh-wein for $3 a glass. Gluh-wein ended up being this delicious spiked hot apple cider, awesome. My group ordered food, chicken strips, potato pancakes with applesauce, bratwurst with sauerkraut, all delicious. Around 10 pm, a woman came around with this bucket of tiny pieces of papers rolled up (think diplomas for mice). The three cheese spatzelle was surprisingly good but one order is probably enough for two people if your sharing an appetizer before hand.
