This place is a long standing institution in queens and the interior reflects that. The decor alone makes this place feel like such a special experience. I had a group dinner here for my parents and my boyfriend's mother to meet for the first time. This is perhaps not the perfect location for this type of thing, as it was extremely loud in the restaurant. Despite being very busy, the hostess made sure we had a comfortable table to sit at and were not too cramped. As expected, the beer selection is great and I enjoyed my Berliner Weisse very much. I ordered the goulash and kasespaetzle. The goulash was rich, well seasoned and filling. The spaetzle was soft and creamy, covered in lots of flavorful aged cheese with salty bacon bits and sweet onion. A very rich dish. Although I didn't technically order an entree, I still found myself pleasantly full at the end of the meal. The rest of my dining companions ordered either the schnitzel or the wurstplatte. All seemed very pleased with their food, and some even had leftovers to bring home due to large portions. This restaurant is certainly a fun spot to come, reservations recommended. I've been on a mission to find the best German fare in the city. This may be it. Fabulous schnitzel, goulash, gigantic bretzel, beer, wurst, potato salad. It feels exactly like a gasthaus in Germany or Austria. Interior design was on point - animal heads on the wall, carpeted floors, timber tables and chairs, Hofbrauhaus mugs, combined with friendly service. Authentic German atmosphere. A feeling of family throughout the entire space. Service, amazing. We came in for my birthday and while I've tried most everything, my main go to is their Sauerbraten. Delicious tender sweet and sour beef in the most amazing flavorful gingersnap gravy served with a side of Potato dumplings and red cabbage. If this doesn't scream comfort food, I don't know what does. It's reminiscent of a cold evening at home with a hearty meal on the stove waiting to be devoured and the plate picked. I'm not kidding. We had their creamed spinach as a side, which was delicious but slightly on the salty side. Wasn't expecting that but it was still hearty and fulfilling to the soul. Continuing my run of German restaurants since my return from a country that borders Germany, I had to try this one out because a coworker told me that this one is the better of the two known German restaurants in the city, the other being Heidelberg on the Upper East Side. I would like to think there are three, as Schnitzel Haus in Bay Ridge certainly deserves some accolades, even if you have to go to the edge of the universe just to eat there. You get what you pay for here, and it shows. The portions are generous (literally!), the staff is genuine in how they feel about the food here, and you walk out probably 5-10 lbs heavier than when you walked in. Whether that be from food, drink, or both. I tried the Veal Cordon Bleu and it really felt authentic. The veal is delicious and the ham and Swiss cheese interior are a welcome addition. The home fries that come with it are pretty greasy so be careful when you eat them. The giant pretzel is tasty, light, and the three sauces that it comes with (a horseradish and two mustards) complement it well. Every table near me ordered this, but I think I was the only one to finish it. What does that say about me? After it was all over I had to get a linzertorte, because it would bother me all night if I avoided it. This was a great way to end the meal because it is a generous piece of dessert that is rich and flavorful. I told the staff the slice you get is really the right size. Too little would be cheapening it, but too much would make it too rich. Nicely done. Well worth the $80 tab (that was including tip) and taking the roughly 45 minute train ride on the J train from downtown Manhattan to get here. Of course then it is a short Uber ride because this restaurant is not very subway friendly. Do not let that deter you from coming here because the experience and fare are worth it. I went to this tasty German restaurant a while ago for someone's birthday (which makes a bit of sense as I'm half German.) They used to have a store next door and I would have liked to compare it to my old local spot The Swiss Pork Store (it's German though) in NJ but unfortunately it's been closed for a bit. The staff was friendly and the inside is a bit dark. They gave some good warm bread to begin with. To drink, I had one of their many tap beers, the Weihenstephan Hefeweissbier Dunkel for I believe $9 or so. My preference for German beers are generally the Bavarian ones (along with Schlenkerla) and beers from Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan are my easy preference over Augustiner, Paulaner, and especially Hofbräu for wheat beers/hefeweiss as the flavors are a bit stronger. Said dunkel was a browner slightly sweeter variety and it was very tasty though I prefer the original one more even though this was very drinkable. To munch on, we got a couple appetizers. The käsespätzle for $15 made with emmentaler cheese and topped with bacon and fried onions was tasty though we had to hold the bacon due to reasons. It was good quality spätzle/spaetzle and plenty of it for the price with a good funkiness from the emmentaler and a bit of sweetness from the onions. They also got a Giant Pretzel which is $13 and served with 2 mustards and horseradish sauce with my definite and obvious preference being the Bavarian style sweeter mustard. The pretzel was pretty good quality being a bit better than Max I believe. I asked the waitress her opinion between the Jägerschnitzel and the Sauerbraten and she recommending the former which was $33 and listed as the "Hunter's Cutlet" with a breaded veal cutlet with a fresh mushroom sauce and veal stock and served with home fries. Said home fries had some bacon in them which was removable for others (but not me. Said cutlet was absolutely massive and the meat inside was tender with the batter not being too thick. It was excellent in short with the mushroom sauce adding some sweetness and earthiness with there being plenty of tender mushrooms. The weakest part was easily the home fries which lacked any crisp but the star was the meat. There was otherwise some parsley on the plate. As we were going back to someone's house, we didn't bother with dessert unfortunately. In short, this is one of the two actually good German restaurant in NYC and nein, the other one isn't The Heidelberg (it's Max Bratwurst Und Bier in Astoria.) Fünf Sterne to match Max though I prefer the later as their platters are easier to share but this is very close and the portions here are better. read more

Man it feels like you are in a different world! It's a Queens institution and it should be celebrated as such, it's a restaurant that has been open for 50 years and I hope it continues to stay open for another 50 years. Schnitzel Heaven! Zum Stammtisch is one of those uncommon restaurants where it is basically impossible to go wrong. You'll get excellent traditional German food served by a friendly, efficient (of course!) staff in traditional dress. The Jägerschnitzel is smothered in savory mushroom gravy, resting atop delicious home fries. The enormous pretzel with dipping sauces (especially the horseradish sauce!) is dangerously good -- try not to fill up on it before your main! The Sauerbraten is fresh, tender and crafted to perfection. Sides of creamed spinach & red cabbage pair perfectly with the mains. Cold Hofbrau beers to start, followed by my 2 favorites, the Deutscher Salat and the kaiserspatzle. You can not go wrong with either. The special on this day was bone in goose with homemade stuffing and we had to try it! Amazing!! As this was our first time having goose, we do did not know what to expect. Late Saturday dinner with family! We wanted to give it another try as remembered the taste from a bit over 10 years ago . It was delicious back then . Today we visited the place again . Decor was great ,big shout outs to our service ladies ! you were great. Unfortunately when we get to food it was a big disappointment. Kids got chicken cutlets tasteful ,ate it all . My daughter ordered salmon ,I got beef and my husband got a special of a steak. Salmon not only smelled like a mold but also tasted horrible. At first we thought she is not being serious because that's what cause of food poisoning ,side effects of the most -fish! We both tried it and told her not to eat it . We had immediately called our server and she kindly apologized and offered the replacement but she completely lost her appetite at that point (let's be clear she voided price of that dish at the end ) Let's now move to beef . There were 3-4 thin slices of beef completely covered with some thick looking sauce (wouldn't be surprised if it was pre-made one at least this is how it looked like) dish did not look appetizing at all. Gave it a try but 95% remained in a plate .it was simply not eatable. Recommendations would be to remove it from your menu list or definitely change organization on that plate . Lastly my husband steak was a hit ! It was delicious so we ended up sharing that one plate between each other . Total came to $130 for a great steak and little ones to have their very good chicken cutlets it was a bit pricey. Will not be returning there just wanted to make sure service there was great therefore they were rewarded with tips for that matter plus a star of the review. Excellent food but more than anything great customer experience! Yesterday, my party of 9 (!) from all across the tri-state area met at 4:30 at our intended venue only to discover a burst pipe closed the restaurant! We quickly pivoted and remembered Zum's was nearby. A quick conversation with the hostess explaining our situation-- she worked a little magic and VOILA! we were seated and enjoying goulash by 5 pm. No easy feat but she made it happen. Riesling schnitzel was great, chicken cutlets were delicious and the bauernplatte was excellent. Really a festive evening that exceeded expectations. We used to go to this restaurant a lot when my son lived in Astoria. Since he moved to Brooklyn we haven't visited in a long time. I have always attributed it to my one German line, my Great Grandmother's entire line. I have her exact face. So I'm certain my German genes are in charge. This restaurant is popular even at a very early time for dinner. The ambiance was perfect. I wanted to walk around the restaurant & view every inch of the very German decor. So that's just what I did. The food was just as I remembered, with a wide range of authentic choices. Of course I chose the Sauerbraten with Dumplings & Red Cabbage. Why would I have picked anything else? And their Apple Strudel is to die for. My Vegan turned Vegetarian son wasn't able to take advantage of the most wonderful menu choices. But his restaurant choice to please Mom made me very happy. After dinner we spent a lot of time in the section of the store that is basically a German grocery & meat market. My first choice was a jar of the Red Cabbage. Knowing that my bacon loving Grandson would be with us for the weekend, my son chose hand sliced bacon from the meat market. Was there last night for the second time this year and realized I have never left a review in all this time! To begin with let's start with the positives. The ambiance is just wonderful, true German decor with rustic wood beams, beer steins on the shelves, dimmed lighting, stucco walls and German music playing in the background. The cocktails were good and those at my table who ordered beer were happy with the selection and freshness. Service was on par. The food itself was delicious.
