    Mamas special

Great deli spot for classic Italian sandwiches. Got the mamas special and mozzarella hero. Both solid sandwiches filled with fresh ingredients and impactful flavor! Friendly staff, got to meet Irene too! Clean on inside and gives off homey vibes. If you also want to eat sandwiches at their garden, it's on the same block inside the cafe they co-own

This is the most famous Italian deli in Queens. It has been here and run by the same family for over 100 years. I've always wanted to stop and try their sandwiches, which are supposed to be outrageous. The food at the U.S. Open is notoriously expensive, so I'm happy were able to make the stop. I ordered the Mama's Italian hero special by phone & will pick it up in :30. Once I was here I realized that they had piles of ready made sandwiches to grab and go. Everything looked and smelled delicious. The shop was packed with gourmet Italian items piled up to the ceiling. Our sandwiches were delicious. The bread was so fresh, there were thick slices of fresh mozzarella, and the meat was generous. Lunch was a real treat.

Mama reigns supreme! The top tier Italian deli/ cheese shop on a key corner Corona that's big on the Mets and keeping Italian traditions going.. she's an ideal ambassador for culinary legacy here in Corona. Big stop for Mets fans I hear. I understand the sandwiches are top notch but we bought Italian staples like fresh mama made mozzarella and imported Italian olive oil & artichoke. All Jarred goods were wrapped on Leo's butcher paper and you feel the love and traditions here.

I'm so happy that we found Leo's! We had the Friday special eggplant parm hero. One was huge and enough for 2 of us to share. Super good, filling hot, homemade authentic Italian sandwich. Irene is wonderful and sweet.

Fantastic sandwiches. Had the Super Italian with oil/vinegar and hot peppers. Excellent choice! Great bread and great mozzarella. Will be returning.

The last bastion of old-school Italian sandwich joints in Corona. Make sure you stop by and pick up a Mama's Special before this famous landmark fades away like nearly everything else has in Corona.

The absolute best sandwich spot in Corona! It's the home of the New York Mets and has been an institution for us since back in the day!

The outdoor seating is currently available during COVID-19 but with super limited 2 tables. The food options on the menu are various with photos but it was still difficult for us to make decisions without clear English description. We had Beef Tripe Stew ($12) and Bandeja Paisa ($16). The food was decent, especially the extremely tender beef tripe with creamy and soft potato. We didn't recommend the Bandeja Paisa, the pork steak was too dry and the pork belly was too greasy. Their pastries looked great with reasonable price but we didn't have a chance to them try this time. We will plan to have another visit for their brunch and pastries.

What has also always been true is that the service is extremely slow! I knew I was going to be there for two hours, so I chose carefully when I had time to dine-in. However, they recently went through a renovation to remove a wall that separated the bakery from the sit down restaurant in the back in order to expand their available seating and build a full bar. Things have gone so downhill since then. About the renovation itself, all of the chairs and tables don't match. They kept what they had before the renovation and added a few new tables and chairs that look really cheap and are so uncomfortable. The service is even worse, because not only is it slow but the servers are so rude!!! We didn't get the batido we ordered until halfway into our meal. The food has also gone down in quality, they must be buying cheaper meats and ingredients. The pollo guisado was all big pieces of bone, and the carne that came with my meal was the smallest I have ever been served here, I might as well have ordered mote pillo without the carne, I don't know what I paid extra for. The final straw that led to my one star review is during my recent dine-in for lunch just yesterday, I saw a $1 charge for the takeout box that they put the remaining food in that I didn't finish and planned to take home. I have never as a born and raised New Yorker encountered this in a restaurant where I paid for a full meal and then was nickel and dimed for a to go box. The server did not tell me this charge would be put on the bill either, and we surely told her that when she returned to collect the check, especially considering how many times we have eaten there and never been charged for this. It is a really shameful practice to put the cost of the renovation onto customers in this way. I would not recommend dining at an establishment that does not value customers at all by providing poor service, cheap food, and up charging clients.

The area itself is primarily Spanish and I couldn't determine if I had even been here before despite my being a New Yorker for almost all of my life. Soon enough the wander led us to the "Taste Of Italy" pizzeria that was located right near the Junction Boulevard stop on the "7" train. Though they had a decently sized menu with a number of proper offerings I opted for a slice of cheese pizza and another with pepperoni. A can of Sprite would help me to wash it down. I found the slices to be very tasty, filling and comparable to what I usually get in my own Brooklyn neighborhood and that made me happy because there are few things worse than terrible pizza. My colleague had a lesser experience with a chicken sandwich that she felt was on the greasy side but when she brought this up they gave her a couple of slices of pizza. I should have tasted it myself to confirm that said colleague had a legit complaint as opposed to just being fussy because that happens sometimes. Either way she was covered and it was nice that the place didn't give her a hard time. I found the staff there to be friendly which is always nice and yes there was a language barrier for me since I only speak English but honestly I feel that 90% of their clientele speaks Spanish and I am in the minority. This didn't get in the way of my ordering what I wanted and liked. In the rear of the business is a spacious dining area with about eight tables that each fit four patrons. It was warm, and that was welcome since the work we were doing was outside and it was quite cold that day. I didn't detect an open Wi-Fi but they did have a television running in the back playing Spanish language programming. I thanked everyone with a smile and the three Spanish words I actually know and off I went back to the gig. While I did enjoy myself I can't see myself returning since this was a one day assignment and I don't see myself in this region for anything any time soon. I did want to make sure that a Yelp was done since it was a good experience for me. If you should be shopping around this area, you've got a good place to eat and rest your bones.

That was enough for us to decide we will not be returning. I have been coming to this restaurant for over 25 years. The food has generally been good, which is why my family continued returning and recommending it to others. Our history with the restaurant has not been without issues. Years ago, we stopped coming after a Mother's Day incident involving my grandmother. We had been seated in the upstairs dining room (when it was still open), only to later be told by the owner that we did not have a reservation and that we had to leave. After several years, we decided to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt and eventually started coming back again. Unfortunately, today confirmed that the earlier incident was not simply bad luck. I was dining with my parents. We ordered two steaks, two appetizers, three sides, a bottle of wine and later a second bottle (of which we only drank half), along with four after-dinner drinks, cappuccino, and dessert. It was clearly a very busy day, and service was slower than usual. Because of the restaurant's pace, our meal ended up lasting a little over three hours. We were patient the entire time and never complained. After we finished eating and were simply finishing our drinks, the owner, Marcelo, approached our table and remarked that we had been there for three hours and were now only drinking alcohol, indirectly suggesting that his establishment was not a bar but a place for dining. Considering that we had just spent several hundred dollars and have been customers for decades, the comment was unnecessary and unprofessional. We immediately asked for the check and left. For context, I am a physician and understand the pressures of demanding work environments. However, professionalism and respect toward customers should always come first. Over the years, my family has typically spent between $300 and $500 per visit here. Unfortunately, after this experience, this will be the last time we come. There are many excellent Argentinian and Uruguayan steakhouses where customers are treated with appreciation and respect, and that is where we will be going moving forward.
