Beer and hot apple cider

My husband and I needed a little Christmas cheer, so we decided to stop by for a spot of brunch. The Heidelberg, a cozy German tavern bedecked with fir garlands, festive paper lanterns, and warm string lights, was exactly the environment we sought. We sat at the bar among the restaurant's regulars and ordered two dishes to split: the bauernfrühstück and the apfel omelet. Of the two, the apfel omelet was the star of our meal. It's similar to a crepe but thicker. It's stuffed with apples and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Some may say it's more dessert than breakfast, but even with the ice cream, the dish itself was balanced, as neither batter nor filling was too sweet. I scarfed that down quickly. The bauernfrühstück was not how I expected. Portion-wise, it was more of a side dish than an actual meal - I had anticipated it to be heartier, bigger. The menu described it to be an egg scramble with home fries and bacon, but now that I think about it, I don't recall any bacon in the dish! For $19, I didn't think this was worth the money. Still, it was delicious. My expectations were not in the right place, I suppose. Nonetheless, I've been to Heidelberg before and have enjoyed their other dishes, including the jagerschnitzel, which I highly recommend! Heidelberg is such a gem in this neighborhood, and I would definitely return here for a warm, cozy meal.

Come here with friends for good german food and definitely drinks! This place's got a cheery and cozy cabin atmosphere. Prices may seem a bit high at first but it's Nyc and the portions are extremely generous. Give it a 4.5. There's a plenty of beers to choose from and we tried the seasonal ones as well. Our server was attentive and given our large group of 6 ppl, managed to remember and deliver all our beers! The pork shank was good - not too dry on the leaner parts. It's even better if you can eat the leaner parts bite by bite with the fat and crispy skin! We got the pretzel and potato pancakes (very crispy) as apps and they were delicious. Only thing was the texture to the red cabbage and saurkraut - wished they were not so finely chopped/shredded (but that's just personal preference).

In the 1970s when I lived in Yorkville it was obvious why the area was dubbed "Germantown." Heidelberg is one of the oldest family-run German eateries in the United States, and sadly the only remaining German restaurant in Yorkville. East 86th Street is now lined with popular chain stores; the street lost its flavor. Heidelberg is low-lit -- thus my dark photos -- with an interior reminiscent of earlier times. One can sit at the bar (which my husband did when he came by himself), in the dining room, out front on Second Avenue or in the 'garden' area (which doesn't look garden-like.) Heidelberg is popular; I noticed a good number of European patrons at dinnertime. We had no problem getting a table, but reservations are recommended. T ordered a sausage platter: bratwurst (which I tried and enjoyed), bauernwurst and weisswurst. More wursts than I'd be interested in. The plate came with red cabbage, sauerkraut (which I liked better than the red cabbage) and German potato salad. To be candid, German cuisine isn't my thing. I ordered jagerschnitzel which was sauteed with onions, mushrooms and garlic in a white wine cream reduction. Had I known the schnitzel was so saucy, as you can see in the photo, I wouldn't have substituted spatzle (which isn't my favorite) for potato salad. While I gave a cutlet to T and took another home, I did enjoy my meal -- but vowed next time to make a dinner of appetizers. Heidelberg's potato pancakes look very good.

While the decor isn't as over the top this is a great alternative to Rolf's if you are looking for a traditional German feast this holiday season but really go any time of year. The staff are amazing, the food is delicious, and the prices are reasonable. It's a gem in Yorkville.

Humongous Pretzel

A little bit of history before I go into this review, this restaurant is located in Yorkville, a neighborhood on the Upper East Side that for about 20-30 years was dominated by German immigrants. As a result, you would see several German deli and shops all near each other on 2nd Avenue. Over time, the area became lost to gentrification and younger people, as rents rose and businesses fell. There are only a handful of these businesses left. Heidelberg is one of these survivors. Despite the high prices, the food is actually really tasty, and authentic, like stepping into Bavaria. I plan to visit Bavaria next year, so this perhaps is a good teaser of what is to come. I had to get the pretzel and the pretzel is really dense. It is a big one, served with mustard. Give me cheese with this and it really is a solid treat. The mustard alone is good because it is not too strong, so it helps make it all go down, but it is a monster to eat. I watched two people struggle to eat this. The fact that I was able to scarf one down by myself either says I can handle the load, or I am a fat pig. I will let you, the users on Yelp, determine which one I am. Per my servers suggestion, I went with the Sausage Platter for One, instead of the Schnitzel. It comes with three various sausages, potato salad, red cabbage, and sauerkraut. I also requested some lingonberries to change off to get some sweetness. Every sausage tasted fantastic and I enjoyed a little of the red cabbage and the potato salad (sauerkraut is not my thing). The lingonberries are terrific. It was like getting a dessert without actually paying for one. I recommend coming to a piece of New York City history and partaking in a generous brunch, lunch, or dinner at this institution.

My partner and I stumbled upon this gem after a tough workout in the area. It reminded us of one of our favorite restaurants out in Brooklyn, so we were excited to try it! It was quite busy at 2:30pm on a Saturday, we got one of the last open tables available. Inside it was very cute, decked out for Christmas. It was such a tough decision picking what to eat, as everything on the menu and that we saw coming out of the kitchen looked great! We ordered their eggs benedict (which came on a potato pancake!) and the kasespatzel with bacon. Both were great post-workout fuel and we left satisfied. Will absolutely return next time we are looking for a hearty post-workout feast!

Pretzel was legit with authentic German mustard. I could taste the seeds yum! The sausage with potato salad and sauerkraut was so tasty! All warm. Very filling. $17 for the sausage. Fun interior with old style paintings and the staff wears authentic German clothing. Took me across the pond!

Ambiance (5/5): The décor has classic German themes throughout the restaurant. Liters and pints of German beers to try! We sat outside, where there were several outdoor dining tables with some fencing to provide some boundary between the street. Service (5/5): Danny, our server, gave us the best recommendations (and some customization). Strangely, our waters came after the meal but we were helped timely with our drink and food orders! Potato Pancakes (4/5): I loved how the pancakes were seasoned with the onion and garlic tones. I wished they were slightly thicker to get more of a crunch. It needed a little more salt but otherwise served with the apple sauce was my preferred option! Gebratene Ente (Duck) (5/5): This was absolutely divineeee! The duck was cooked to fall off the bone, so tender and packed with flavor. I wished there was more of the gravy that it was cooked in so I could dip everything in it. This is a must have. Wiener Schnizel (5/5): Per Danny's recc, we added a side of the Jagerschnitzel gravy and subbed the potatoes with spatzle. Wow, the gravy really gives the bite some extra flavor. The breaded veal was amazing--perfect crunch, nicely flavored, and still delicious reheated. The portions were generous! The spatzle is a soft and buttery side that goes well with the whole dish. Everything was great and can't wait to come back!

I've been dining here for over 30+ years and the food is still delicious, portions still ginormous, and the service still warm, attentive and personable. Still run by a member of the family who's matriarch purchased the restaurant back in 1964, when you walk into the restaurant, it's literally a time capsule of yesteryears when decor was very ornate yet has the comforting feeling of being in someone's home dining room. But let's talk about this incredible food... Oh. The. Food. From my first bite over 30 years ago til today, the iconic recipes and flavors are still the same and untouched and so this New Yorker appreciates that so much. Starting with some of my favorites of their apps selections: the non fishy smelling creamed herring that just melts in your mouth is a you have to order item; to their potato pancakes that have great texture and body but oh so light that it does not give you the sit-in-your-gut gross feeling; to the addictive gooey buttery rich Käsespätzle, aka German mac-n-cheese, that is just the perfect comfort food on any day, are all items you just have to order at every visit here. Their schnitzels are all perfectly pounded to an even medium to slightly thin thickness and then battered fried to become this heavenly fried slab that is crunchy and soft and the best vessel that is to be paired with either their creamy jäeger sauce or my personal favorite, served a la Holstein, a Berlin version of schnitzel served with a side of anchovy fillets, capers and a fried sunny side up egg...a piece of each in one bite combined is just heaven, I've converted many anchovy haters to love this dish! I can proudly say ALL of the entrees here are an absolute must order but if you only have room for one, then please order the Schweinshaxe!! This humongous slow roasted and then crisped just before serving pork shank is the unctuous food of the German gods and the presentation is just eye popping. If I'm here with friends or family, I love ordering their Schweinshaxe platter for 2 (but really for 3-4) or their Schweinshaxe platter for 3 ( but again really for 5 imo...). The platter for 2 comes with not just the pork shank but the variety of sausages platter for one and the platter for 3 comes with all that is served on what platter for 2 offers plus thick slices of bacon and a smoked pork chop. Both platters are served on top of their famous all warm German potato salad, flavorful sauerkraut and stewed sweet and tangy red cabbage. I'm salivating just thinking about my next visit! It's a true iconic restaurant that is great to bring those who grew up here in NYC as well as out of towners who are looking to experience old world classic NYC cuisine.

Classic German food with a super cozy atmosphere. The restaurant alone is very welcoming and has a homey feeling. The menu is made up of tons of great German classics. The sausages are the way to go! They were all very tasty and the sides that came with them were even better!! I also tried the schnitzel and although it was good I would opt for something else. The food was delicious across the board and the beer selection was great! They have a nice little patio area in the back! The menu is a little pricey but the food is good.

Really great vibe inside and the food was very authentic and delicious. The service was also great, loved our waiter and the whole staff. Excited to go back in the summer for the outdoor seating

The main reason I'm writing this review, though, is about the service. We were a party of seven, including a toddler who became a bit fussy toward the end of the meal. To be fair, he was making some noise--but the restaurant itself is already fairly loud and buzzy. When we tried to order dessert, our waiter told us there was "a dessert place down the street, Spot Dessert Bar, also Thai-owned." The comment felt odd and, frankly, like we were being encouraged to leave. Shortly after, he returned to say the toddler was being too loud, which led his mother to take him outside while we waited for our dessert (thank god they allowed us to order some! :| ). I understand that the noise was occasionally disruptive, but if a restaurant provides high chairs, it signals that families are welcome--and young children can get restless. Given that we spent close to $600 for our party, the situation could have been handled with more tact and courtesy. We started the evening satisfied but ultimately left disappointed. I wouldn't go back because of this experience.
