Sabarsky served a delicate Kaffee Crème
Penelope M.

We waited about 20 minutes on a Friday afternoon. The security personnel were very professional and organized, weeding out the museum goers from the cafe patrons in a respectful manner. We were going for both, but I thought Klimt and Kokoschka could wait an hour or two. The service was a bit leisurely, but that was fine because the Goulash soup with potatoes was rich and flavorful. And for the first time I had Elderflower syrup in sparkling water. This was lux, kind of bougie alternative to bottled water. Delightful! I had Chicken Paprika with Spätzle. The sauce was very similar to our goulash from many minutes before, so very appetizing. However the Wiener Schnitzel? Chef's kiss. Both dishes came in big portions. Our Crêpe with lingonberry was alright, but the Kaffe Crème was perfect. I was glad I came here before their upcoming renovations. Now off to meet The Lady in Gold".

Kaiserschmarren Sacher Torte
Katelynn T.

I tried the original Sachertorte in Vienna and had to try this one here. Cafe Sabarsky's sachertorte was delicious in its own right, and paired with the whipped cream, was amazing. I would say the shell is softer than the original, but I enjoyed it just the same. The kaiserschmarren was also yummy and had a great crisp to it. It is quite pricey for what you get (and obviously if comparing with prices in Austria). The cafe itself with very cute and aesthetic and didn't feel rushed while catching up with a friend

Located in the "Neue Galerie" in NYC upper East side, home to many beautiful artworks such as the women in Gold by Klimt, this hotspot European coffee shop/restaurant provided beautiful selection of European breakfast options and classical cakes, not to forget the seamless transition to the gallery thereafter.

Weiner Schnitzel with Potato-Cucumber Salad and Ligonberries
Carina H.

Despite the long wait and line without a reservation, after ordering, the drinks and food were ready probably in less than 20 minutes. I was surprised by the speed the food came out. The lighting was moody but the lights shone through the many windows mid-afternoon. The walls were deep brown with intricate designed carved into the wood. The Cucumber Juice with Sparkling Lemonade didn't taste like what I expected -- a spa in liquid form -- but it wasn't necessarily bad. It was refreshing. The Weiner Mélange was strong, although it wasn't so creamy and balanced I would order it again for $9. The Weiner Schnitzel wasn't as crispy as I hoped, a bit difficult to cut into sometimes. However, the sweetness of the ligonberries paired perfectly with it. The breading wasn't too thick either. The Viennese Beef Goulash with Herbed and Creamed Spätzle was filling. The beef goulash fell apart with a light slice of the knife and was flavorful. I wish the creamed spätzel had more of a herb flavor for depth; I tasted more of the creamed. Finally, the meal concluded with the star of the show: the Shredded, Caramelized Pancakes, Roasted Fruit Compote, and Toasted Almonds. The pancakes were fluffy and thick, reminiscent of a sponge cake or soufflé. The caramelized layer wasn't too thick. The compote and almonds weren't too sweet. It was perfection.

Bratwurst mit Sauerkraut & Rösterdäpfel

It was my first time trying Austrian cuisine and ended up really enjoying it. I ordered the Bratwurst mit Sauerkraut & Rösterdäpfel and a Hausgemachte Trinkschokolade mit Vanille Eiscrem. Service was great and ambiance was elegant.

We came in for coffee and a dessert , didn't stay for dinner . The place has a classy , old-world feeling which is good , service was ok as well We ordered for the double espresso with cream which Was nice and special , and the Austrian cake w apricot jam and chocolate - such a. Huge disappointment : dry , not tasty , couldn't feel any apricots at all and small as well. And all this for 14.5$. I Kidd you not Does not seem worth the hype

We went here for lunch after going thru the art galleries. It's a beautiful restaurant in part of the mansion with neue gallerie. The Austrian theme relates to the Klimt exhibit (Austrian artist). We both had very tasty lunches. Café Sabarsky offers a modern take on the culinary heritage of Austria with a menu that reflects the history and allure of the Viennese café. We both enjoyed our food. I had the bratwurst meal that came with sauerkraut and potatoes. My companion had the cheese sausage fish w pickled beets and a cucumber potato salad. They have a nice wine list as well as divine desserts that were very tempting! Our server was helpful, fun and knowledgeable. Definitely would come back!

Whenever we visit this place, we had to stay in line. I even waited for over an hour in the freezing New York weather and it was worth the wait. We love their foods, from bratwurst to braised beef with spatzel. The highlight is also the desserts time. They have a wide selection of choices. We especially love the Black Forest cake. My husband who's from Germany originally always says it feels like he is back in Europe here!

There's a lot of waiting! My boyfriend waited maybe 40 minutes on a weekend late lunch around 3pm. We did get a very nice corner booth seat by the window. We weren't super hungry but wanted to try the spatzle and wurst, both were very good. The desserts they have on display around the restaurant which was great to see.

I was on a trip to get my Schengen visa and this was my first stop exploring different cuisines while I'm in NYC. Café Sabarsky is names after Neue Galerie's New York founder Serge Sabarsky. This is inside the museum and doesn't require to purchase the museum tickets to have a quick bite. There is a security check that you need to get through to get to the cafe and it's one of few restaurants that are Michelin recommended and offer a breakfast menu on few days of the week. The entrance to the cafe doesn't give you entrance to the museum. However you definitely could go to the museum store. The service was elegant and professional to that of an highend restaurant. The restaurant was packed, with most of the seats filled. Strangely though there was never a wait. There's limited options if you are a vegetarian, we tried 2 different crepes, the trout and apricot confiture crepe, both were great and definitely recommend it. They were perfect to start your morning light on a day I had planned a few more restaurants to get to. This is my second time trying out Austrian cuisine.

Apple strudel
Erin C.

After visiting a gallery nearby, we stopped by this cafe for a dessert in the afternoon. The inspiration came from wanting an apple strudel with the whipped cream from the movie Inglourious Basterds. This cafe has also been on my list in the UES so I was excited to check it off! As far as the desserts, we ordered the Apple Studel, which is what we came for and my companion loved it. For me, it didn't taste that fresh. We also got the sachertorte, which came a bit dry but could be the way it is. I think if we came in the morning the desserts would have tasted more fresh. We also ordered refreshments to complement the baked goods. My iced coffee drink was served a bit messy and I couldn't finish it as the taste wasn't on point. The vibe was casual and almost felt cafeteria-like, even though there were nice booths along the windows. We were seated in the middle in very tight quarters at cafe tables, which may have added to this cafeteria-like experience. Cakes and desserts were presented along a wall covered by plastic cloches, which is where the servers took the pieces from. We had waited 10-15 minutes in a line outside and then inside of the building, which made it seem like the cafe was elevated in ambiance - it wasn't. This is a casual place to grab a quick snack or drink but do not expect anything more in terms of ambiance.

Jessica G.

I sum up my experience with a very eloquent "meh." The atmosphere of the restaurant inside the converted mansion museum was interesting, but overall the food was uninspiring for the price. We arrived about 11:40 on a Saturday morning as a party of 2. Instead of putting your name down with a hostess, you wait in line in the lobby and won't know how long the wait will be. We were the third party in line and ended up waiting about 45 minutes for our table. I ordered the apple strudel and their 'house made' chocolate milk. The chocolate milk was more of a milkshake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, but it tasted good. Both dishes came with a generous amount of whipped cream, but I was surprised to find that it was unsweetened and lacked flavor. I'm not sure if this is normal or if I was simply unlucky today. I ended up scraping it off the drink and putting it aside. Being my first time eating at an Austrian restaurant, I'm not sure how the strudel compares, but it was good, not great. Service was unremarkable and we had few interactions with our waiter.

A 5th avenue gem. Located below the Neue Museum. Wonderful European flair and cozy atmosphere. .

Ask the Community - Cafe Sabarsky

Are children under 12 allowed in the cafe?

Yes

Is it usually busy Saturday mornings for breakfast?

It might be-- better to make a reservation online to guarantee you can get seated without standing in the long line to enter the museum itself

Can you reserve a table?

Only for dinner. Breakfast and lunch are first-come, first-served.

Can we have the desserts to go?

i don't know the answer for sure, but think why not? give them a call in advance. normally there is a fee to enter the museum, that's why i always make reservation and skip the line/entrance fee.

Both were great. First course Celery Root Tartare - a nice mix of creamy and crispy textures, with savory and herb flavors underneath. Beet Salad - not bad, but a bit too simple for my taste. It's mostly large chunks of cooked beets in a light dressing. Second Course Potato dumplings - absolutely delicious. The pillowy potato dumplings come on top of a fragrant leek puree and a rich cream sauce, with a quenelle of savory mushrooms. There is a present but not overpowering truffle flavor as well. Dorade Royale - I didn't try this, but my friend seemed to enjoy it. Dessert Kardinal - nice contrast between the firmer outer layers and soft inner layers, with subtle sweetness and green tea flavor. Very delicious. Creme Brulee - literally the best one I've ever had. The duck eggs add some almost savoriness to the cream, and the pineapple jam adds a touch of tropical fruit. Definitely try this. With tax and tip, the meal came out to about $80. I'd definitely come back to try some of the other dishes someday, or at least to have the creme brulee again.

I had the octopus appetizer (the octopus was perfectly done but I felt like its delicate taste was overpowered by the vinaigrette in which it was served), the schnitzel main course (very very good), and the strudel dessert plate (absolutely outstanding). My server was lovely, although I did notice that one of the other fellows was stone-faced as has been noted elsewhere. I'm taking off one star a bit because of the octopus, but mostly because of the music. The volume was fine, but the choice (classic rock) was very odd for a place with an otherwise elegant Austrian vibe. I mean, I wasn't necessarily expecting Strauss waltzes, but I think something more subdued would have set the mood better.

It's a cute place, nothing fancy but a place you really can come hang out any day of the week. If I lived in the area I could see my myself ending up here any day of the week. I guess that's why when I went with fellow Yelper Sara L she said she has gone many times and wanted to take me since she knew I would enjoy it. The food: Gebackene Champignons- Fried Mushrooms- OK to preface they are kinda plain and boring the first few pieces. But the more I ate it the more I was like wow, these are actually good and kinda addictive. I enjoyed these and I enjoyed they gave a nice big portion. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA&select=wXMnSOv4x6gNG-gHh3t40Q Potato Latkes- These were on the specials page and they were good, nice crunchy and fried well but these were mixed with something since the taste was a bit different and the color wasn't that nice golden brown color you associate with latkes. Goulash- This was a dish George had and honestly, they were amazing. Highly recommend. I thought the flavor but more importantly the texture was amazing. A lot of times when you have slow cooked beef, they could sometimes get stringy and chewy, no not here. Also the spätzle was a really great pairing. Mussels- These were some fat ass mussels. The flavor of them was good, the night I went they were spicyyyyyyy.
