Stopped in on a Friday night with my husband and 3 other couples for wine and noshing. Spent a little time at the bar before our table was ready but enjoyed the education from bartender Steve. We ended up trying their two red flights for the evening "Roll out the Reds carpet" and "Take me to bed Reds". Both were great and we both found favorites amongst the three in each flight. Split a Figgy Piggy flatbread and mushroom risotto with my husband. Both were outstanding. Finished off with a goat cheese cheesecake with blackberry gastrique. Omiglob that was tasty. My husband and I enjoy dining at different places and trying different dishes. But our food tonight was lackluster. While my husband enjoyed the lamb meatballs, for an appetizer it was small- more of a side dish. The seafood risotto was ok, we could have made it better at home though and, again, small portions. I had the trout which was very good but it was thin and some asparagus only as a side wasn't enough to be filling. $150 later, we still had to get more food when we got home. This is probably a great place for wine and snacks (the wine selection was great!) or for straight up socializing, but definitely not for a night out looking for a satisfying dinner. read more

It has taken me a bit to write this review especially since I told our server that I was going to give them a bad review. We went late in the evening. It was a nice night and we wanted to sit outside. Our luck we got the WORST server that night (Tim) get up and leave if he is your server. We got our waters quickly, because a busy person got us those. We wanted the special and white wine. We thought that maybe they were still mushing the grapes and bottling the wine it took so long. Then we thought they had to pluck the chickens. I finally got up and wen to the restroom and I asked the other servers if we were getting punked because our food was taking so long. So, just going to be honest here and admit that I'm pretty sure I ordered half of the menu at Robust last night. I was with a girlfriend of mine so I didn't do the damage all alone, but I'm not sure what happened... Just couldn't stop picking things out and ordering them! I love when a wine bar has food that surprises you with its high quality and creativity... Robust does just that. For cocktails, I had the "champagne cocktail" and my friend had the "fall cooler" and both were so good. Mine had champagne, a sugar cube, and bitters, and hers tasted apple and cinnamon-y without being too sweet. This was my first time not getting wine at Robust so I'm happy to report that the cocktails are just as good as the wine flights! Here's a quick rundown on what we ordered: Purple Haze plate: Fresh Goat's milk cheese from Cypress Grove in CA, flavored with wild Fennel pollen and lavender. So good! Comes with toasted bread, dried fruit and nuts. Majorly addicting for the goat cheese lover. Spinach and Three Cheese Spread: Spinach, roasted artichokes, cream cheese, mozzarella and parmesan cheese with housemade crostini. As good as it sounds, and much better than the usual. So creamy and huge chunks of artichokes! Spanish Meatballs: Meatballs in a manchego cheese sauce with julienned vegetables. Quite possibly my favorite dish all night... the crunchy vegetables compliment the meatballs so much. And that sauce, omg... Mushroom Risotto (that's not the actual name but the website isn't updated and guess who didn't take notes...): This was pretty good, lots of mushrooms and truffle oil, cheese, and carrot puree. I would maybe order it again but it needed a lot of salt. Texture was great though. Maybe just add more cheese? Sea Bass: Was good, again, but needed salt as well. I wasn't the biggest fan of this one. Service, as always, was fantastic... and I love that Robust gets busy on a Monday night. I'm a sucker when it comes to wine bars. I love everything about them...their drinks, bites, and atmosphere...I can't get enough of it! Robust is another favorite for the books. Last night I visited Robust with 4 friends. I made a reservation for 8:30 through their Yelp page. It was the earliest one available but we ideally wanted to start at 8:00. We still went at 8:00 and they were able to seat us no problem! We had prime patio seating on a beautiful St. Louis night. I ordered the crab cakes which exploded with flavor. While the dish wasn't filling it was still Robust with flavor (see what I did there?). Luckily I just needed a bite so I wasn't too concerned. Since it was Wednesday they had 15% off "wine flights." Educational moment. A wine flight is 3 half pours of pre-selected wines that compliment each other. I think my flight was called "roll out the red carpet." I really enjoyed it. A flight is perfect for someone like me who knows they love red wine and is always looking to explore new brands. Everyone I was with a got a flight and they also enjoyed exploring the flights. The sad thing is, I had one of the very last bottles of that particular vintage. Boo for you :( That's OK, there are other years out there. That aside (um, Beyonce isn't making it past the spell check--what?), I had a thoroughly enjoyable dinner recently at Robust. My cronies and I sat out on the heated patio, and the manager, truly one of the nicest and most responsive managers I have ever encountered (this is coming from someone who once managed a restaurant, by the way and no, I was not even in her league) made sure we were comfortable and moved the heating lamp closer to us. Dinner was a rich affair of cheeses, dips and breads, all scrumptious and although decadent, I didn't feel guilty because portion size was appropriate. I appreciate this as sometimes I *sigh* have been known to overindulge. Yes, it's true. Our waiter knew the menu, its extensive wine and what to pair it with inside out. I seriously want to come to this place once a week. That's how much I love it. I came back after many months from my initial trip with Stewart P., and I brought Sean H. with me this time. He didn't actually eat anything, but I opted for the brie cheese plate, and the humus and pita plate. I also got a red wine flight. (Pinot noir.) I hadn't eaten all day but this was more than enough food for me! I ended up taking the humus home to eat later because I was just stuffed on the cheese and fruit alone. So delicious. We met here as a group of 11 Moms for a night out. I was only there for the wine as I had eaten earlier. Great selection of wines to choose from. Great location and only wish the weather would have cooperated so we could have sat outside. But the inside was nice as well for our large group. The most memorable was our server who was phenomenal. Just the right amount of time, good guidance and knowledge of the wines and super friendly, easy going and attentive waiter. Meet my first Yelp friend Norma here for Happy Hour. Having my first golf lesson later tonight (6Jun), I couldn't stay long, but I did make time for a Bubble Bath (Erin G. recommendation). A Bubble Bath is three glasses with 3oz pours of champagne. I love the place-mats that the pours are presented on, it makes for easy notes and knowing what to buy by the bottle when you fall in love with one as I did. All three were incredibly good, but the NV "J" Brut Rose, took my breath away. If I didn't have a golf lesson, I could have stayed and nursed a bottle till it was gone. The bartender Frank and the wait staff all dressed up in fun t-shirts were top notch. Wine selections can be had in 3 oz, 6 oz and 9 oz -- how lovely for tastings or your favorite pour. The French Onion soup was perfect and I use that term advisedly. Right ratio of broth to solids; rich satisfying broth; chewy bread cubes; enough cheese but not too much. It's hard to get right and not many places do. I was so disappointed when we visited this place for Valentine's Day. It's always been one of our favorites, and we were looking forward to going again this year. They usually have a set menu for Valentine's Day but this year they didn't. That was our first disappointment. The best thing about the evening was the seafood chowder. It's always incredible. That came out quickly. Then it took an hour and 15 minutes to get on the course. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed my wife's company, but after that much time will relate hungry. Probably one of the most memorable dining experiences I have ever had...My sister and niece were taking me out for a belated birthday dinner. We had just ordered our dinner, looked up and there was my ex-husband who lives in Houston standing in the doorway with a date. How odd...he flew into St. Louis and was supposed to be having dinner with our son. Our dinner was great and went perfectly with a great bottle of wine. As we were finishing our dinners, my ex and companion walked past our table and out the door..seconds later the manager ran past our table and out the door after them. It seems they had asked for a "go" cup for their wine and when told "no" they walked out the door with a full wine glass. Steve, the gracious manager, retrieved his wine glass. I told him that he had just chased my ex-husband. We shared some laughs. He said it was a "first" for Robust and the first time in 17 years anyone had every behaved that way. My son told me his father had told him his flight was delayed and that they could have dinner tomorrow night.That was not a "first". I was so opting for a wonderful relaxing dinner after a 12 hour day. That was not to be! I started with a prosciutto plate which was the best food I had. Not much to say on that, it was good but it is what it is and does not really reflect on the kitchen. Next I ordered the country onion soup which was decidedly in appetizing. I have been gauging restaurants on there onion soup for years. I am looking for a fine and savory beef broth with deeply colored onions and a light broth mouth feel around the cheese and bread. What I got was a broth that was glutinous and ponderous on my palate. It truly seemed as though it was tempered with corn starch. I get that one can hit the kitchen on a bad night on one item or another but my final trout plate would be a disappointment at the Cracker Barrel! I would characterize the dish as uninspired and dull bordering on unpleasant. This dish had no life whatsoever and no subtlety of flavor to speak of. I left 3/4 of it on the plate and to my shock no one even asked me about why! Inexcusable! I could tell the waitress noted it as she paused holding the plate by the bar around other staff before she headed off to the kitchen. I had a marvelous French Chardonnay which was the pinnacle of the dinner but not enough to make up for the train wreck going on all around it. I am really confused on how this restaurant have such good ratings and I had such a dismal dinner. Clearly there is much left on the menu to try but I will leave that to you. The building is lovely with very toned down warm lighting and a good hubbub. The site lines are very nice with very attractive decor and I could spend weeks there exploring the wine selection. Came here last week with my two best friends visiting from out of town per my uncle's suggestion. He hadn't been here but wanted to try it so he treated us girls to some awesome wine flights and delicious food! I tried the sassy, sexy, soft wine flight...3 different pinot noirs, all great choices. We ordered the red pepper hummus and some olives to share. I ordered the roasted beet salad and crab cakes for myself. The crab cakes were light and flavorful, but not too overpowering so I could still taste my wine! I also tried my friends pear and prosciutto flatbread. All were excellent, no complaints from anyone at the table. We also shared the bread pudding among the four of us, and still had a quite a bit left on the plate... a rarity indeed. read more

I have never left a negative review on any site, ever. But, tonight, this experience was rough. I had never been to Robust and was, finally, excited to try it. I got an Opentable reservation and decided that I should call and confirm a couple things. First, and most importantly, I wanted to confirm that the wine menu prices that they have online was the price I would pay at dinner. I've been to a few restaurants that have a very small mark up if you eat dinner with them and buy the wine from there retail shop......but I knew this wasn't guaranteed. The women told me "yes, those are the dinner prices." We arrived, after 6 months of waiting to eat out again (hav't been to dinner since March and we normally go out 2x a week). The menus arrive. First thing.....wine is almost double what was online. Bad start. Then the dinner menu? Not the same as online. I brought My son with us because they had a hamburger and spaghetti - so he would survive. Nope. Not available. We decided to "just deal" and we would re-feed the younger one at home if necessary, I decide on a bottle and, while we waited, I said that if they don't have the wine, or bring the wrong bottle, we are leaving. Yep. Wrong bottle. I am so not a complainer....I feel bad writing this.....but I feel like they gave me the "bait and switch" with the wine prices. I wouldn't have gone to dinner there except for the great, and reasonably priced, list. I hope this isn't the post-Covid dining world. It's tough enough, already. The meat and cheese plates are always perfectly balanced with the right amount of accompaniments (Think dried apricots, almonds, tart cherries). I highly recommend to get this start or the baked Brie! For an entree the Arctic char is my absolute favorite, and it isn't too heavy on butter/oil. Among an excellent assortment of cheese selections, you will find that the wine selection is also impeccable (even more so for a wine bar). When I'm back home for short stints in the StL, I'm often spending time catching up with old friends that I haven't seen since the Christmas prior. Now that I'm a bit more grown up (*cough*), I prefer wine over Red Bull & vodka and an easygoing wine bar over a Washington Ave. club. And Robust Wine Bar is exactly my speed - there's enough of a 'scene' so you still feel like you're sneaking in a bit of nightlife, but it isn't too crammed, too loud or too boring. Really, it's just right. Because I'm equal parts indecisive and adventurous, I usually go for the wine flights when imbibing at a wine bar. For $12 to $20 (depending on your selection), you'll be greeted with three generous pours. As my friend and I came to Robust specifically for the purpose of planning our upcoming trip to Spain, we of course HAD to choose the 'Run with the Bulls' flight - replete with a Grenache/Syrah blend, a Mencia, and a Tempranillo. All three picks were solid, but the beautifully complicated Tempranillo warranted a full pour after we finished our initial flights. Naturally, some food was involved, too. The bartender helped us select a cheese sampler and we also tried the olive oil-poached shrimp (decadently delicious) and the Robust olives (served with roasted garlic, feta and artisan bread). Robust! You're my favorite new kid on the block. I was unaware of your existence for awhile, but now that we've become acquainted, you're my good buddy. A few things to note: I am not a wine connoisseur. That being said, I do feel like I have a generally acceptable palate for good wines, and every wine I taste at Robust sets my buds afire. While Robust certainly isn't the first place to invent a wine flight, I do feel like they nail the selections, each sample provides more and more happiness dancing across my tongue. Go to Robust to experience what they do best: wine and appropriate accompaniments (hello there, cheese, nice to see you on my table this evening...) I felt like giving the spinach artichoke dip a high-five. It's the right mix of fresh spinach, creamy cheeses, and flavorful artichoke. It's not overly gooey, not overly earthy. Yums. The house salad with gruyere, bacon, carrots, corn, almond brittle (yes, it's amazing), and garlic vinaigrette and is a total NOM NOM NOM. I paired it with the Robust Chowder (shrimp, chorizo, potatoes, yes) and was really, really happy with this decision. Be aware that if you're bringing "dudes" here, they do not have a full liquor bar (no whiskey, k thanks.) Plus, it's not exactly "dude" food, no large sides of cow on plates here. What I'm trying to say is, this is a nice place to bring your wine-and-salad-loving girlfriends. Keep it on your radar for a lo-key 'Girls Night Out.' Our server, Joseph, was elegant and knowledgeable. *Go Jo-seph, Go Jo-seph......... Go, Go, Go, Go, Go...* The one thing that irked me - our table was right next to the espresso machine, so the moment that bad boy got a workout, our conversation went quiet. We found it kind of funny, but I do recommend they fix this ASAP as it was a real distraction to our otherwise perfect meal. PS - don't miss the well thought-about mini gift shop. After many years I finally made it over to Webster to eat at Robust. Unfortunately, due to a dietary restriction, I could not have wine. I ordered sparkling water and it was flat. We got the tuna tartar, which is actually poke style, and baked Brie. Decent, not amazing. But we were hungry so we ate it all. The waiter was pleasant and brought me a different sparkling water after I informed him it was flat. My husband got the chicken pasta and it was ok, but a little too smoky tasting. I got the sea bass and it had a random piece of bacon on the top. The fish was a bit over cooked and salty without much flavor. The decor was very dated, that Tuscan style everything from the early 2000's. This wine bar has been around for awhile, perhaps they should consider redesigning the place...We didn't have a bad time, but it was mediocre. Perhaps if I'd been able to have wine I would have enjoyed it more. I won't choose this place again. read more

I've never considered myself much of a wino, but I think Robust might change that in short order. What a great little spot in Webster Groves! From the understated decor and dim lighting to the chill music (think Massive Attack & Thievery Corporation) and friendly, knowledgeable service, Robust provides a hip, unpretentious, relaxed atmosphere to enjoy a variety of wines and sample some tasty food. I'll admit, I've only visited Robust once, so far--but I enjoyed myself so much I'd be happy to become a regular there. Justin and I stopped in after dinner last Saturday night for a drink and dessert. At 10pm there were still plenty of full tables in both the bar area and in the rear dining room. We sat at the bar where a few other folks were eating and ordered the very tasty dark chocolate cream cheese brownie with vanilla creme anglaise. I would eat it every day if I could. Justin paired the dessert with a stout (they do have beer on the menu, too), while I enjoyed some wine. I love that they offer 3oz. and 6oz. pours so you can sample a variety of their offerings. Their menu is particularly helpful to those who don't know much about wine (ahem, ME) and is broken down into "Robust Factors" that include Bubbles, Crisp, Mellow, Luscious, Soft-Hearted, Generous, Robust and Sweet & Stickies. I imagine I'm going to spend a good deal of time at Robust trying to figure out which type of wine I like best. So far, even though I'd love to be Luscious, I'm more of a Crisp. Sounds too much like a spinster librarian to me, though, so I'll have to work on those Luscious wines. :) Even better, once you figure out what wine you really love, Robust has a little shoppe stocked with wines priced mainly under $25. I think at such decent prices, it's safe to say I'm a wino in progress. In addition to the wine, the little shoppe (I like to call it a SHOP-ee, myself) also carries a variety of coasters, glasses, mugs and fun tableware. It's not a huge selection, but it'd definitely be a good place to stop for a gift... after all, you can always just buy the booze... I'm definitely looking forward to heading back to Robust to try more wines and one of their cheese or charcuterie platters. And their soups. And salads. And entrees. A group of girlfriends and I met at Robust on Saturday to (finally!) celebrate my engagement and make some preliminary wedding plans. Our server didn't even think twice when I busted out the laptop at the table or when we asked for a tape measurer and then took it into the bathroom so I knew my measurements; hence, what size wedding dresses to be shopping for. I highly recommend the champagne flight, otherwise know as the Bubble Bath. Light, crisp and perfect for celebrating. We also shared some small plates, including the heirloom tomato salad, spinach dip and one of their many delicious cheese plates.
