My family read about Robert Earl's BBQ in the L.A. Times last year. We bookmarked the Long Beach establishment and finally got to visit as restaurants are reopening. Thankful for pandemic prevention measures like a few picnic tables on Artesia Blvd. When we entered the restaurant (to place our order), signs advise customers to stand 6 ft apart. Staff wear masks and gloves. Google results notified us that the restaurant was closing at 6 pm. However, a staff member said Earl's closes at 7 pm. (Before the pandemic, it used to close about 8 or 8:30 pm.) The employee also said that recent customers have been disappointed by the higher prices, but we understand that the supply chain disruption has caused higher costs to local businesses. The smoked pulled pork and rib tips were very tender and savory. As hot sauce lovers, the spicy BBQ is the way to go! It made my lips slightly numb and it's very slightly sweet. We were given one set of plastic utensils and a napkin. The rib tips were worth getting my hands dirty because they were finger-licking delicious. And the sides of greens were an excellent complement with their slightly tart or pickled flavor. Note: side of slice white bread to sop up the leftover sauce! Best of the best bbq in California. My faves are the beef ribs (on the bone), hot links with hot bbq sauce, Mac n cheese and banana pudding. Everything is just wonderful , fresh and delicious. My only "complaint" would be that they aren't open 7 days a week so i can't have bbq sometimes. I won't buy bbq anywhere else. I am not a fan. They refused to refund me for an order I cancelled and never received. I ordered for pick up at 11:49pm. They called me at 11:51am explaining they didn't have half of the items I ordered and asked me if I wanted to cancel my order. I said no that was fine. I then get an email at 12:01pm telling me my order will not be ready until 3pm. I immediately called back to cancel and cancelled the order. I never received any food from this restaurant. They are refusing to refund my order. I took it up with my bank, and they told my bank I violated their "cancellation policy." ... No cancellation policy on my receipt, on their website, nor on Chowhound's website. And I cancelled within 15 minutes- for food that wasn't ready, and wouldn't be ready for three more hours. I called over the phone to place an order and they stated they were closing at 5P.M. and that they stop taking phone orders an hour prior to close. The lady on the phone let us know that if we could be there by 5 they would take our order. We got there 10 minutes till 5pm and the lady runs over and says they are closed and no longer taking orders. They could have just told us over the phone that they were done for the day and we wouldn't have wasted our time driving over. Pure laziness. The hours posted on yelp are incorrect or these people close whenever they want. It's Sunday and it says they close at 8:30 but it's currently 5pm and they are closed. Bbq restaurants are all around me each one is completely different from the other. The reviews at this place were mixed and I decided to give it a try for myself. I love bbq and I like my sauce hot sweet and tangy. The restaurant is near Jordan High School and there is parking in front of the business. Let me be real clear the negative part of the review is about the potato salad and the banana pudding. The ribs were delicious had a nice flavor they were seasoned very well. Potato salad It had a sour taste I thought was mustard based and I tasted it twice and darn it! it was spoiled it actually was spoiled I smelled it and my nose knows. I had to toss it out. Baked beans They were good with a spicy bbq kick. Pork ribs These were the star of the show. The sauce was tangy and sweet perfect for tender ribs with a little bit of chew they also had a nice flavor that wasn't too smokey it was so good I would order these again. They tasted even better the next day. Banana pudding The banana's were slightly oxidized not a good sign and the cookies were way too soft they actually disintegrated into the pudding. The pudding base was really good it was thick and whipped creamy very tasty but with brown banana's and soggy cookies I just couldn't eat it. At $3.50 what a waste I tossed it into the trash. My take on the food The bbq was really good and the sauce was nice and flavorful I would buy these again. The banana pudding it was old but I could tell it would have been delicious if it was fresh with cookies and ripe bananas. I will come back if only to try that banana pudding. Yummy! The baked beans They were delicious. The potato salad It was spoiled and I tossed it out. I bought a dinner I received three ribs two tiny side items a tiki punch and banana pudding for $18.00 I don't have money to throw away. "Welcome to the family!" It was my first time at Robert Earl's and I already felt like it was my 100th time. At the counter, I took awhile to decide and the girl was patient with me, helping me with some suggestions. After I sat down, Robert Earl himself came out twice to make sure everything with my meal was A-OK! It's not a real BBQ joint unless they run out of something. I was there at 7 p.m. on a Saturday and they were out of Mac 'n' Cheese, Cornbread, Chicken and Brisket (cooking, but 30 minute wait). If good is gone, you only have yourself to blame for not getting there earlier! That's okay, there's loads of other stuff to get. 2 Meat Combo ($18) - Your choice of meats and comes with two medium sides. They give a good amount of meat and the medium sides are pretty big, larger than some other places. Rib Tips - Every piece is very well seasoned, meat is a little firmer than the pork ribs but still tender. Very smoky with some crusty on the outside. Good without the BBQ sauce and even better with it. For this one, I'd say getting it with the sauce on top or on the side, either is good, because you are going to want to put a lot of the sauce on. If it's your first time here and you want to taste the pure meat first, then get sauce on the side. If you aren't into working smaller bonier pieces, then don't get rib tips. If you like nibbling around bones, you'll enjoy these. Pork Ribs - The pork ribs are some sort of amazing. Get this with the sauce on the side so you can taste how good the meat is. Crusty and evenly blackened outside, but juicy on the inside. Slow cooked over peach and cherry wood. Even as I was driving away after my meal, the smoky goodness was still lingering in my mouth. The meat doesn't fall off the bone, but it is very tender. If I had to choose, I'd choose these over the rib tips. Can't really go wrong either way. Spicy BBQ Sauce - This has some kick to it. If your mouth and stomach is really weak on the heat, then get the regular sauce. It's not going to burn you, but it will let you know that you are hangin' with the spicy. Brisket - I am trying you next time! White Bread - I was given two pieces. Baked Beans - Loved the beans. Sweet and tangy but not too, too sweet. It has a little bit of spiciness to it too. Potato Salad - Weird to say that nothing in particular stood out, but I really like the potato salad and will be ordering this again. It's not too salty or too creamy. There are some spices mixed in, but only to give it flavor, not heat. Potatoes were just the right texture, not under or over cooked. The slightly subdued potato salad was a good balance to the sweet and tangy beans and the smokey meats. Banana Pudding - The pudding is off the charts. It's a very smooth pudding, on the sweeter side, no banana chunks but solid banana flavor all over. I think they let 'Nilla Wafers sit in there until they get soft. In every bite you will get an almost even portion of 'nilla wafers and pudding. The small container is $3 and is really small, you could finish it in four bites. The medium is $6 and you get about double or maybe a little more than double of what you'd get in the small. Pricey, but if you like your banana pudding, you can't pass this up. The good thing about Robert Earl's is that even though they may run out of some items late in the day, they still have plenty of good choices left. On a Saturday you will probably wait about 15-30 minutes for your order after you place it, which is better than the 30-60 minutes that you would have to wait at Bludso's (2 miles away and they always run out of meat by 6 p.m. on Saturdays). Plus they have seats and tables! What do you think of the food? Be ready to answer, because they will ask you! 3.5 and I'll explain....... So my family and I only eat BBQ about once a year and we were craving Bludsos sooooooooo bad. So while pulling up the info on yelp I came across Robert earls and started drooling from the pics that looked just as good as Bludsos. I wanted smoke turkey, nope didn't have it. I was somewhat ok with that BUT not having peach cobbler available is a crime, ESPECIALLY when they hype the ish out of that on Instagram!!!!! My sis was really mad about that because she doesn't eat bbq meats except chicken and she wasn't even in the mood for that. So we ordered a two meat combo, a three meat combo, two orders of sides and a slice of pound cake. Here is the breakdown Two meat combo: This was my meal and that included pork ribs (spare ribs,) beef ribs. UNFORTUNATELY they forgot both of our sides that come with the meal!!!!!!. Luckily they packed the 2 large side orders that we wanted but that wasn't enough for 3 grown women especially my sister that was only focused on the sides and not meat!. I didn't ask for sauce on the side but that was ok because their sauce was pretty good. Not to sweet and not to tangy. I hate tangy bbq sauces. The meat was nice and smokey and tender. Mac and cheese could have used a little more cheese but overall solid black mac. The greens were perfect and my meal was every bit of a 5 and could defintely rival Bludsos. 3 meat combo: This was moms meal. Two orders of rib tips and bbq chicken. No sides of course with her meal as well. Rib tips are her fav thanks to Bludsos BUT Robert earls did her dirty LOL. This was not a consistent meal for her. Over half of the tips were tough. At first I thought she was being dramatic but nope, I took the rest of her tips and most of them were so tough I had to spit it out and I NEVER let food go to waste! You seriously could not break that meat down. So there were more tough tips than soft chewy fatty ones :( She was so turned off by this, she didn't even bother with the chicken. Thats ok I ate the chicken and I was haaaaaaapy. I'd get that part of a meat combo any day! She enjoyed her sides but agreed with the mac as well .So her meal was more like a 1 star in her eyes :( Pound cake: This was crack! I should have ordered 2 of these slices BUT you never know if its going to be dried out or not and I didn't take the risk. I'd easily get this dessert everytime!!!!!! Overall it was a rollercoaster of emotions kind of meal because when my sister and I came in to pick it up the family was so nice and the owner was all about constructive criticism . He knew I was a yelper and I told him im fair in my reviews but honest no matter what. So we left with such a great feeling but to come home and the sides not included left us beyond frustrated, sad and mad. The time, effort gas and money wasted really did something to my mom and sister since they never splurge on meals. A food video blogger from Nashville says Robert Earl's BBQ is the best bbq in the country. His youtube review convinced me Robert Earl's BBQ was a must try. I was finally at least sort of our on that side of town so I went 30 minutes out of my way to pay a visit to Mr. Earl's establishment. It's easy to miss because there's no big sign out front. Matter of fact, the only sign was a banner. Glad GoogleMaps said I'd arrived. I love the simplicity of the place. Concrete floors, some sturdy tables covered with red and white checkered table coverings and heavy wooden chairs to sit on. The menu board was a little overwhelming for me. I ended up asking the cashier what she'd recommend. I told her I wanted to sample some different things so she recommended the three item combo. I chose chicken, pulled pork, and pork ribs. I wanted rib tips, but they had just run out of them. I chose the spicy sauce, instead of hot sauce. They put a lot of sauce on the meat, so if you don't want a lot of sauce you might ask for it on the side. I liked all the sauce. It had a nice little kick to it. My favorite item by far was the pulled pork. It was fantastic. The ribs and chicken held their own in bbq goodness. I chose potato salad and baked beans for my sides. Potato salad was perfect, not too much mayo and the baked beans were spiced just right. You get plenty. It was about $30 for the three peace meal, that comes with two sides and a soda. By the way, no fountain drinks, it's all canned soda or water bottles. That's not cheap, but it's easily enough food for two...maybe even three people. It takes a while to get your food after your order, but it's well worth the wait. You can also call in your order ahead if you are pressed for time. There's a 75 cent surcharge if you pay with a debit or credit card. There is no table service. You get your food at the pick up window. They are adding some tables outside in the front, so there's plenty of seating. Parking wasn't super easy, but you'll find some if you take a side street. Just be sure and read the signs. The highlight was meeting the one and only Robert Earl. He's a great guy. He told me the best part of his job is watching people enjoy his food....and enjoy it they do!! Best bbq in the country? I've been disappointed with California BBQ after going to Texas last year and trying out their BBQ. Even Bludso's(La Brea) didn't taste too good to me when I went there a few weeks after my Texas trip. It has been over 6 months that I have had real BBQ. Robert Earl was able to satisfy my hunger for good BBQ. Their rib tips are great! The meat is well seasoned and cooked to perfection with a nice smokey flavor. The meat is very good without sauce. But, their spicy BBQ sauce is the best that I have tasted. Unlike other places, their spicy sauce is spicy. The best part about their rib tips is that it only costs $5.50 plus tax on Tuesdays. Sorry Taco Tuesday. Rib Tip Tuesday is much better. Their brisket is not as good as the brisket that I had in Texas. But, for California, it isn't bad. The meat had a nice flavor and was cooked to perfection. It was very tender with a good smokey flavor. Service is great. The woman working there welcomed me both times I went there and told me I was part of the family. She makes everyone feel at home. I like Robert Earl's BBQ. It is not the same BBQ that I had in Texas. But, it is one of the best BBQ's in California. I'm glad I am part of the family. Let me start by saying that even if you order online well in advance as I did for Fathers Day weekend, for a specific pick up time, you will still have to wait for your order. With that being said, I would still recommend this place because the food was delicious, plentiful and full of flavor. From the meats, to the sides (mac'n cheese...Amazing!! Corn bread....amazing!! Had this for the first time today, of what will likely be many future visits! I came for Lunch, got the Brisket, Beans, and Cornbread. The brisket- Delicious, nice and smokey, you can tell it was barbequed and was beautiful even without BBQ (Which the BBQ sauce was good as well.) The BEANS!- Off the hook, ridiculous good. Little bits of brisket, spices, bbq sauce and love make the beans worthy of being a course by itself! The cornbread- Very yummy, super moist, almost like cake in a way, but in the most yummy, buttery way possible. Ordered the Lil Texas Sampler and it is anything but lil. We shared it between 5 of us. The brisket, ribs, and beef link were delish. Wow! Not only is the food great but the service was fantastic! In the midst of the infamous Corona Virus Pandemic of 2020, everyone was smiling and cheerful. They graciously thanked us for visiting them were so very kind and friendly I wished I could go there everyday. We chose the Lil Tex Sampler for our locked in immediate family birthday. Don't worry, no one outside the household was invited. The sampler easily served 4 adults with leftovers even. The ribs fell off the bone, the brisket melted in your mouth like butter, and the chicken was so moist. We also enjoyed the hot links and the rib tips. The sampler comes with two sides and we added two more: mac and cheese, greens, beans, and potato salad. I would rank them in that order as well. I wish the potato salad had been homemade - it just wasn't on par with the other items. Reading some of the other reviews, I totally disagree with any of the low rated reviews. Most of them were for ticky-tack things like they closed early because of the virus or ran out of something. Anyone that eats BBQ knows it takes a LONG time to cook and a restaurant never knows how busy they will be (especially in these times!) so show some understanding! read more
