I hadn't been here in a few years. On Saturday I wanted to get some barbecue so I decided to drive over and get some meals. The young man serving me was friendly and helpful. The seating area is small. After I placed my order, I walked to Starbucks to get a treat. I took the food home and everything was delicious. The brisket felt like melting smoke in my mouth. The ribs were tender and juicy. The macaroni and cheese and potato salad were very delicious sides. My son had a pulled pork sandwich and devoured it. There are also lunch specials until 3PM. WOW WOW WOW .... I have found my new BBQ SPOT for now on. We ordered the Big Daddy Earl Platter for a family celebration and there was just DELICIOUS SILENCE in the beginner of the sit down because everyone was busy inhaling the food. Its Saturday, September 16th, and I'm running errands and hungry. I HAD TO HAVE BARBECUE TODAY! Immediately thought of Robert Earl's. Drove up and was so happy it wasn't a wait. The young man that assisted me had excellent customer service, and was very nice. Okay the food!! It was absolutely delicious!! I ordered the 2 meat combo, beef ribs and chicken. It came with 2 sides, so I chose potato salad & beans. GREAT CHOICE! Everything in that container was so flavorful and well seasoned, not to mention it was plentiful. I HAVE NEVER BEEN DISAPPOINTED HERE. IT IS SOOOOO GOOD!! My only complaint is they were only accepting cash today. With limited cash on me, I couldn't get all that I wanted. Haven't been in years. It became my default "go-to" spot when a local Compton legend went Hollywood and before I picked up bbq-ing myself. It used to be borderline great but it's now not as good as I remember it to be. Chicken sausage was pretty good but didn't have the exact wow factor I remember but I may be confusing the sausage with the other spot's chicken sausage. Rib tips were good but not as tender as I like them to be and it also had actual bone shards in them which I haven't had in rib tips before (bone not cartilage). Brisket was, by far and away, an absolute let down. I ordered 1/2 moist and 1/2 lean but got 1 full dry as Sahara desert meat. Their own slices didn't even go all the way through so you can imagine how tough it was to chew. Embarrassingly bad. Another huge letdown, and the main reason for this 1 star review, was the service. Just very abrupt "wait here", "hold on" from the young staff when they went to go get someone else to help up front. Story time...the inside door handle has very sharp pieces of metal sticking out that actually cut and drew blood on my finger. There was no initial apology when I went to go show them what their door did. They just either said "oh no", "shoot" or "whoa". They (the 3 younger kids) then hid in the back, out of view while they looked for a bandaid (which is supposed to be readily available per health code). 5 minutes pass and nothing - no bandaid as two older gentleman (one I'm sure was Robert himself) came up to see what happened. Robert does genuinely show some concern but he still has no alcohol, antibiotic or bandaid to address the situation. The other older gentleman reaches around him and tries to hand me a Clorox wipe for my finger and I tell him that's not for cuts which he says "yeah I'm just trying to have you clean your hands". At this point, I'm frustrated but I'm curious on what this circus is going to do next so I wait instead of storming out. Robert then leaves again and finally finds a small first aid after another 5 minutes. I put a bandaid on, grab my food and turn to walk out when I FINALLY get a " I'm sorry, my man" from robert. First time here and definitely won't be the last time. This is way better than any of the trendy or chain bbq places. We had the beef ribs, pork ribs, rib tips, pulled pork and brisket. The pork ribs were my favorite. We had the bbq sauce (mild) on the side and it tasted so good. The online ordering of the food was so easy and convenient to use. Superb, legitimate BBQ! Yelp friends and their reviews sometimes alert us to a restaurant or business we simply must try. Such was the case here (thanks, Jenni M.). After reading other reviews I promptly made my way here for lunch. To say the exterior is modest is an understatement. The interior is spacious with a couple of picnic tables and three other "four tops" atop the cement floor. The traditional jazz of KKJZ plays through their sound system. Order at the window and your food will be brought to your table. After being greeted by a friendly young woman behind the counter, I ordered the brisket lunch with a mild bbq sauce. The lunch comes with a side and I chose barbecue baked beans plus an additional side of potato salad. Lastly, a sweet tea to drink. The brisket was really great with a deep smokey flavor and a sauce that was complimentary to the beef, not overpowering at all. They provide a couple pieces of plain white bread with your meal which I used to sop up the extra sauce when I finished the meat; it was that good. The portion of brisket was quite generous for the price. Mine wasn't as tender as I'd hoped. They provide only a single plastic fork which I saw as a good sign of fork-tender brisket but my fork quickly broke while trying to sever through it. Obtaining two new forks at the counter, I was able to cut through the brisket more easily. I don't mean to make it sound as if it was tough - it wasn't - just not tender enough that you could cut it with a single plastic fork! The beans were out-of-this-world delicious, the sauce thick and slightly sweet (molasses?). The potato salad was a traditional type and also incredibly delicious. And a standing ovation for the sweet tea which had a unique, almost floral flavor. Went here for BBQ on Sept 1st, 23. There were two then three customers waiting for called in orders. We waited at the walk in window looking at a paper menu and then realized we had to ring the bell. We did then a lady said she'd assist shortly. While we waited the 3rd customer came in to pick up her order after going to the grocery store. Her food still wasn't ready. In the pouring down rain (it's been a rare winter for SoCal), I was daydreaming of summer and of course an equation that went a little something like grilled, tender delights and homestyle cooking. We were already in the neighborhood and without looking at reviews, I settled for this place for my family of four. Robert Earl's to the rescue! This is how you bring folks of all walks of life together. Great food. Welcoming service. Beef brisket and cornbread, for the win! FOOD... TEXAS-STYLE! Pulled pork (dinner plate = $17) - I'm a pulled pork lover, and this was a homerun all the way, but the real star is the... Beef brisket (dinner plate = $19) - it was so smoky and melted right onto my tongue. I mean, people say they make good briskets at home - as do I, but one bite of this and you'll think you've discovered utopia. McDreamee, my husband, who does not Yelp says this is the best brisket he has had in a long time. Chicken - our girls shared a Friday chicken special. It came with one choice of side for $5.50. The chicken was surprisingly juicy and tender. I just prefer the beef brisket out of all of them - including the ribs that we sampled. Aces. - cornbread - this is easily some of the best I've ever had. Next time I've gotta try a "Golden Nugget" which according to an employee who we chatted with off and on throughout our meal is their house cornbread with homemade banana pudding on top. Hot on bottom, cold on top. Oh. My. Goodness. I can't imagine what it's like for real because I sampled their cornbread and it was so mouthwatering. I loved it. The only thing I think anyone might be disappointed in is the lack of drinks. My husband can do without his glass of milk. The drinks are mostly canned sodas ($1-$1.35 each) or bottled water. That's perfectly fine by me. And no alcohol served, just FYI. NOTE Bring cash or there is a $1 fee per debit card transaction. ENVIRONMENT As others have mentioned, it doesn't stand out and doesn't look like a building that would be home to an amazingly hearty meal, but as the old saying goes, don't judge a book by its cover. They keep the stereo tuned to blues and jazz here. Real music. Free street parking and a few spots behind the building, notably one disabled person parking place. SERVICE They gave us a sample of almost all the meats and both of the BBQ sauces - a mild, sweeter one and a spicier version which is equally full of flavor. Friendly service all around! We are very disappointed! Prior to the 2020 pandemic, we loved Robert Earl's. They had very tasty, tender BBQ and a nice variety of sides. Quality control was great, and service WAS friendly and efficient. We would often order the rib tips, greens, beans and yams--but the last couple of times the tips were chewy--far below par. Robert Earl's lists certain operating hours, but whether or not they are actually open is hit or miss. They rarely answer their phone, and when they do the person on the other end speaks to us like they don't want to be there. Sad, because this was our go-to "cue spot". Hopefully things change. 12/29 and 12/30/2018 On the way to and from visiting family it's great to find a place to stop for a bite to eat. Now I love turkey and was happy to see it on their menu. Tried out the turkey meatloaf with baked beans, Diet Coke, corn bread and corn bread stuffing. You get two sides with the lunch option. On the first visit tried the potato salad and Mac and cheese. I loved everything. My favorite is the turkey meatloaf with barbecue sauce on top. Layers of flavor with moist turkey and gravy just melts in your mouth and makes it do a happy dance. The cornbread has never heard of the word dry and is some of the best I've had. Will be back for sure on the next trip out. read more

Not gonna lie: coming to Long Beach to visit my wife's family is cool by itself, but making sure I get some good BBQ from this place is my favorite part of making the trip! Food is thebomb.com!!!! I've had just about 75% of the menu and it's all good! Service has been great every single visit. Super friendly staff! Parking is pretty iffy and hard to come by, but the food makes up for it. Truly recommend this place to any BBQ fanatics! If you can withstand spicy food, I highly recommend the pulled pork sandwich with hot BBQ sauce. Hits the "G" spot... I mean the gut spot! Ordered take out of Robert Earl's for dinner. Love this neighborhood barbecue restaurant. It's been sometime since I've been there, and they expanded the patio area. If I'm late to the renovation, my bad. Below you'll find photos of the food the family wanted. Catfish is fire. The beef links are good with just enough heat kick. Rib tips are bomb. The sides are good, the collard greens are a bit sweeter than I'm used to, but we're still delicious. And nothing soaks up good barbecue sauce like white bread. It has taken, like many businesses during Covid-19, mor that a few tries to get it right. The food as always is still excellent. The sauce is #1 like it should be. After a day at an Adventure Park, we were looking for food NOT from the theme park. I went through my trusty Yelp bookmarks and we decided to stop here. The parking was quite limited at around 6PM and so was the seating. There was a big family who sat at 3 tables and probably took as many if not a few more of the parking spots out front on the street. No biggie. Anyways, we found parking around the corner and walked a short distance to the restaurant. There is a nice patio out in front as an option for more seating. Inside, there were 5 or 6 tables. I snagged one while my husband ordered our dinner. TIP: If you pay with plastic, there is a $1 fee. They don't disclose that, you find it on your receipt after you've paid. I would have liked to have been told beforehand, so I could have had the option to use my cash instead. We had the Three Meat Combo which comes with 2 slices of white bread. For our meats, we chose Pork Ribs, Chicken, and Beef Brisket. Along with the meats, we got Greens and Mac and Cheese for the sides. The meats were tender and very smokey. I loved their spicy BBQ Sauce, it wasn't spicy to us, but it did have a nice little bit of heat and was tasty! I was trying to get more of the sauce on the meats because it went so well with the BBQ'd meats! I appreciated that the Greens and the Mac and Cheese came out hot! At the end of the meal, we decided to try the Banana Bread Pudding which was being discussed by other customers. The owner came out and talked to us briefly while we were eating it and she said it had just been made and we got a fresh batch. The pudding was very creamy and the wafers were still crisp. I loved that they topped off the pudding with freshly sliced bananas. It was quite a treat! I liked that the service was friendly! Hi, on or about the first weekend in Aug 2004, we ordered food here, it was not good. We ordered Rib Tips and chicken links, thinking we give this mom and pops a chance. The food was HORRIBLE! It was like food truck/ampm type food. They should be ashamed. The sauce was like "NO", it ended up being dog food. Their customer service has room for BIG improvement. I don't know how to rate this place. Robert Earls has been my favorite barbecue in Southern California but damn the service is atrocious. I've now been waiting 45 minutes for my order. Previous visits I've waited but never this long. There were two orders ahead of me and they were served 15 minutes ago. If you want great tasting Texas style barbecue then Robert Earls can't be beat but be prepared to spend an afternoon because service does not serve you or this restaurant with any swiftness. I love this place. It takes a little long to prepare the food but I think it's worth the wait.

I've been wanting to try this spot for a while but could never make it in during their hours. I learned they were on postmates so I placed an order. I ordered the tiny combo so I could sample a little of everything. It came with 4 pork ribs, 4 slices of briskets, hot links and 3 pc of smoked chicken. For my sides I ordered potato salad and beans. I appreciate them double baging my order to keep from any spills or maybe my delivery driver attempting to sample my food (j/k). The food: Beans were good, sadly probably the best thing from this order. Mildly sweet but a lot of black pepper. Potato salad is nothing to talk about. It's creamy but lacks in seasoning. Taste more store bought rather than homemade. The hot links were more like a grilled sausage. Very slight hint of any heat. Not spicy at all. Not impressive. The brisket was dry and lacked in seasoning. It more so looked like a dry tri-tip rather than a brisket. The edges were hard and inedible. Disappointing as that usually is the best part. The meat was chewy and didn't melt in my mouth. The chicken was a wing, breast and thigh (small bird). Overall the chicken has potential but also was dry....to the point I needed sauce for moisture...even the thigh. It tasted as if it was tender at some point but definitely not st the time my order was prepared. The seasoning was good with a good smoke taste. Lastly the ribs. The ribs have a smokey flavor. The portions I received were meaty but again dry. I prefer a dry rub and only apply sauce if a rib is dry or under seasoned...it needed sauce. Overall, the place has potential but I won't order from them again unless I'm in- person to see the meat or to open it in front of staff. What I was served appears to be like a day old or something that has sat out under a heat lamp or oven. As there'd food wasn't enjoyable and some pieces were inedible I feel like my money could have been spend better at another establishment. read more

The Mac and cheese is salty yummyness and the cornbread was flavorful and buttery. They make their meat fresh everyday so availability may vary. Knowing your meat is fresh is well worth it. This was our first time here so we didn't have any experience of what the restaurant was prior to Covid. They have casual seating outside with umbrellas.
