Fried chicken
Lauretta N.

I was looking forward to eating southern food especially fried chicken. Service is very good and server was friendly and attentive. I ordered the fried chicken with macaroni and cheese and greens. Hubby had the vegetarian plate with sweet potato fries, beans and rice. He was happy with his meal. I was not. Coating on the chicken was good and it was crispy but the the meat was very dry....so disappointing. Sides were average. Don't think I will return.

Biggest, meatiest baby backs you've ever seen! Grilled mac & cheese, juicy collard greens, sweet tea is spot on.

Wow, just wow! Biggest, meatiest rack of ribs I've ever seen. That pig was no baby! How did I not know of this place? It's been here since 1984. Grilled mac & cheese, juicy collard greens, sweet tea is spot on (I got it half-and-half). Will definitely have to come back for prime rib on the weekends and breakfast.

DINNER FOR TWO SPECIAL I don't know what's up with the mid reviews, this place is great for what it is!! Walking in is like being transported out of Long Beach and to the south.... Or a diner in big bear lake. It's charming. Anyways, I ordered the dinner for 2 for my mother and father. It came with a bit of bbq chicken, half rack of ribs, tri tip, catfish, cornbread, 2 sides, okra, sweet Potatoe fries and fried green tomatoes. I ordered myself a full rack baby back rib combo and it also came with two sides. French fries and mac. On top of that I ordered some hush puppies . I did not realize that I ordered that much food!!! It was sooo much. Cornbread - meh doesn't really have enough flavor but it's warm and you can add butter. The catfish- the breading was nice and crispy. French fries and mac and cheese- you can't ness that up. The tri tip- probably the best protein that we ate. Very soft. Ribs- needed more bbq sauce but you can order more. It was way better the next day when I heated them up. Chicken- I didn't eat it. My mom did. Hush puppies- fried cornbread. Not my thing. Sweet Potatoe fries- staple Fried green tomatoes- surprised me, that was actually good for literally a fried green tomato Okra- first bites, amazing, after a few it was too soggy for me. Just get the dinner for two. It's more than enough and you get to try a little bit of everything for 58 + dollars. Was it amazing? Not everything, but I appreciate the portion sizes and the variety.

Service was great ! Very attentive. The food was amazing! I got a bbq brisket sandwich , I picked the Mac n cheese for the side so yummy. The sandwich was so full with brisket I was able to steal some pieces and put it in my Mac and cheese! That's how much brisket it had! Peach cobbler was so good as well. The bowl was mash potatoes and cheese grits so cheesy , pulled chicken on top!!

BBQ for bae. We stopped in Johnny Rebs' Truth South over the weekend and it was pretty tame. There wasn't much of a dinner crowd so there was plenty of seating as well as spaces in their lot and/or street parking. It's a quaint little long shack-esque restaurant with a lot of rustic charm. It's been around for over 40 years since 1984, almost as long as I've been around (85'). They do a lot of comfort southern food and actually have a few healthy options in the mix. I had the Farmer's Market Salad, which was enjoyable enough, really nice portion. And there was also an order of frickles (fried pickles) for the table. When I've seen frickles at other places they're completely coated like onion rings or deep fried oreos, these are crispy on top and bottom, like a mini breaded pickle burger. Dusted in cornmeal situation as they advertise, much like their okra. We were a group of four and had some nice beverages, conversation as well as a great server. He felt like a manager, but he and the other JRTS staff we interacted with were all friendly, personable and full of hospitality. I remember asking if I wanted protein in the salad and me saying avocado. And the guy suggestion their chicken, pork, etc. Only to let him know I'm a veggie just along for the ride. And him saying yeah I don't think you'd enjoy any of it if that's the case. He was really fun, funny and nice. The restaurant itself is a little bit on the narrow side and the restrooms are tucked away, but for all and well kept up like the entire joint. The consensus was it's okay. I think everyone felt their food was mild and a touch bland and the frickles overly salty... Not much of a happy medium. I remember coming here a small handful of times when I was a kid and we'd visit my mom's family in Long Beach when I was a meat eater and it being much more lively. My boyfriend remembered similar times from his ventures here pre-2020. Solid starters and sides, a few of which I could have, but not sure if I would try as this isn't the most ideal place for someone who doesn't eat meat and hasn't had it in over 21 years. I'd pop in again if my boyfriend had a hankering, but he didn't much enjoy his southern speciality. Portions are plentiful and the prices are reasonable for sure. Music and ambience are solid. The sweet tea is perfect! Menu is pretty well rounded. And they do served beer, wine and have free Wi-Fi so I could see us grabbin a beverage and sharing a starter if nothing else.

Kimber's Fried Apple Pie a la mode

I feel bad for leaving a low review when the service was so stellar, but perhaps they'll see this and make some improvements. I came here with my date to check out the place, and the inside is extremely charming. Even more charming was our server, who truly made the experience worthwhile, from his extensive knowledge of the menu, sense of humor, and his voice! Best server I've probably had in my life, so please understand my critique is strictly about the food, as the service was STELLAR! Almost every single item fell flat. The cornbread was dry and flavorless. The BBQ platter fell flat and although we were told it was smoked with 13 woods, I couldn't taste one. The fried okra was pathetic, tasting like absolutely nothing. Right behind that was the fried green tomatoes, that also tasted like nothing. 10 points for the sweet potato fries that saved the appetizer. The macaroni is actually grilled, and it's actually an AMAZING concept and created the PERFECT TEXTURE! But the TASTE was BLAND!!! Gotta see it through! The only things I liked were the catfish, the sweet potato fries, and the apple pie with ice cream. But the BBQ, the thing we came for, was all disappointing. I think it's the worst bbq spot I've ever been to, taste-wise. Again, the service is stellar and the location is extremely charming! If they could turn up the flavor, that would make a huge difference!

South by South West (Coast) BIRTHDAY MONTH=BIRTHDAY COUPONS=HAPPY RODNEY $20 Birthday Month promo for Rewards members A rustic looking wood cabin, Johnny Reb's True South cooks up Southern comfort for the masses. My initial impression upon stepping inside, was that of a wooden dining car/railroad apartment. The dining area is one long rectangular room, the width not being that spacious & accommodating. A back porch area allows for dining al fresco. Initially going for the South of the Border Omelette, I thought it best to go for a true Southern dish - the Catfish Plate. Catfish Plate- A fillet of catfish, cornbread & choice of 2 sides. I went with collards & grilled mac and cheese (grilled costing $1 extra). The catfish was luxuriously flaky, melting in my mouth. I was told Johnny Reb's cornbread was savory, and it was! Salty & crumbly, I much preferred this over a sweet cornbread. The grilled mac & cheese provided a welcome burnt layer, akin to pizza & lasagna. Worth $1? Perhaps, perhaps not. However, with the $20 birthday month promo? Indeed! Service was excellent. The young woman attending to tables was hospitable & quick with recommendations. Parking is via private lots on each side of the restaurant. Yeehaw! Johnny Reb's True South offers an excellent birthday month promo for Rewards members, and I was quite happy with my meal. I look forward to coming back, and exploring the rest of the menu, next chance I get.

I can't speak on behalf of their food, but we ordered a smoked turkey from here and it was the best decision ever! We decided to host Thanksgiving this year, and turkey is the one thing no one likes to cook or eat, d so we decided to buy a smoked turkey and have the work done for us already. Ordering by phone was very easy and straightforward. We scheduled a pick up time, and my husband came home with the packaged turkey with instructions on how to reheat it in the oven. Even though the directions were clear, I was still worried that I would mess it up. I followed the directions to a T and at exactly the two hour mark, the turkey was ready at 165°. It was such a hit at our dinner, even people who normally don't eat turkey took leftovers home. I decided to keep the turkey bones to make a broth, then made leftover turkey noodle soup a couple of days after. I would 100% recommend getting your next Thanksgiving turkey from here.

Okra Ribs and bland veggies
Sandra B.

Food was bland. Fried chicken was not breaded. Ribs were tough and the bbq was straight tomato paste with no flavor. Mac and cheese is okay. Fried catfish had no flavor. FYI we have deep roots in Mississippi, Tennessee. We know what southern BBQ is supposed to taste like. And this isn't it at all.

bad bbq chicken
Steven G.

My wife wanted bbq chicken with mashed sweet potatoes. This place had that on the menu and I ordered it. so got jambalaya for me (chicken, sausage, shrimp). The food was terrible. Chicken had no sauce and none in the side. Cold fries. No shrimp in the tasteless jambalaya. The food was awful. only good thing was the corn bread. Such a terrible meal. I'll never come back. You shouldn't either.

Whether you're going for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, The Attic is one of those places that just has something special about it. They've got an outdoor patio, an indoor-outdoor patio, and a completely indoor dining area. Every space has its own personality. It's one of the most unique, eclectic restaurants you'll find in Long Beach. And if you love cornbread, oh my God, you have to try theirs! It's warm, buttery, served with honey, and absolutely delicious. I'm telling you, it's worth going just for the cornbread. The breakfasts are great. The lunches are great. The food across the board is fantastic. The bartenders are great. The menu has plenty of variety, and the whole place just has this incredible vibe. Imagine trying to find the restaurant with the biggest personality on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. That's basically The Attic. There's a certain energy to this place that's hard to describe. It's the same way Palm Springs has its own energy, or Melrose Avenue has a certain feeling you can't quite replicate anywhere else. The Attic has that kind of magic. And the best part? The food actually lives up to the atmosphere. The menu doesn't disappoint, the service is great, and the entire experience feels like something you won't find anywhere else. To me, The Attic represents Long Beach in every possible way. Because that's what makes Long Beach special, right? We're not Orange County. We're not Los Angeles. We're Long Beach. We have our own personality, our own culture, and our own energy. We're a little eclectic, a little unexpected, and completely ourselves. And that's exactly the kind of experience you'll find at The Attic.

Booth the food and drinks were nice. This visit, we stopped by in the afternoon just as happy hour was starting. There was a good amount of people already inside which could be that in between lunch rush and beginning of happy hour. Getting a table was a cinch as we were seating right away on the patio. It is pet friendly which is also nice. Layout of the restaurant is, majority of the seating is outdoor which is covered. There's the dining area inside the restaurant which is pretty small, another patio to the side of that as well as the private room to the side for more of an intimate experience. Mainly the front patio and bar area tends to be the busiest. Staff were all amazing and friendly which is a major plus. Nobody wants to come an establishment where service is snooty and rude. Everyone was a major doll and the sweetest. Our waiter, I didn't get his name was the sweetest. As it was HH, they only had that menu available. Limited but still decent for what was offered. A good selection in cocktails items and for the price, they were great. As for food, same with limited items but pricing was great. They're known for the Mac and cheese with hot Cheetos as pretty much loads of the tables had ordered it. We've had it prior but this time opted out on it. Started off with one of their sangria which comes either red or white and an old fashioned. Both on the HH menu and very reasonable for 7.00 a pop. Cant beat that. Sangria was quite refreshing with the fruit slices while the old fashioned, it was strong. Actually worth it for 7.00. Food, a mixture of things to share. An order of their fries with parsley and rosemary with an aioli sauce for dipping, 8.00. The braised cheddar brat with house mustard, caramelized onions, Calabrian chili with basil and shallot for 11.00. Quite tasty and flavorful with all the topping and served in a nice roll. The chicken sandwich which was quite big. Fried chicken with cheddar and American cheese, chef sauce, pickles on a benne seed bun for 11.00. And lastly the attic cheeseburger with new school American cheese, pickles, grilled onion aioli, caramelized onions on a benne seed bun cooked medium for 12.00. It was tasty but between that and the chicken sandwich, chicken takes the leads. Pricewise for the sandwiches was great. Everything is à la carte on the menu. They do have other main dishes but we just stuck to the sandwiches. Also a second round of drinks was had. The mango margaritas and the classic. Both tasty and for 7.00 a pop, can't beat that. The whole experience was great. Service was excellent and all the staff were amazing. Patio seating is great as it's perfect for people watching and enjoying the outdoor. Until next time.

Secondly, he said it was a startup and they were just getting used to doing business and I said that was not acceptable also. He said do I want my money? I've been to every Halloween pop up, they have been doing this for 2 years now. I was there on Sunday 10/04 and had the MOST HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. First, it started at the enterance. My reservation was at 3:45pm. Security checked our ID's and then asked us if we had a reservation. He asked us to wait in line. We were the first ones in line with a reservation anyways and figured we would have to wait just like the others who were still waiting for their 3:30 reservation. No biggie. But. then a much larger group came and stood in front of us who had a 4pm reservation. We didn't think much of it and were waiting patiently until 3:30 and 4pm were called up first and seated before us. It wasn't even 4pm yet! Made security aware of his mistake and we barely got an apology. I let it go and still had to wait more time to be seated. So then we get seated, it takes 30 mins to just get water. No one has came around to take our order or say they will be with us in a few, nothing. As we are waiting another party of 2 come and sit next to us. They waited half the time and were helped before us!!! Welp, it gets worse you just wait. We get our food first, still no drinks. Drinks got there much later. Well, I started to eat my food cause I didn't want it to get cold. Not time to wait for drinks water will do. I bite into my pot pie it was barely warm. I decide to keep eating it until i got to end of the bite and that's when i got cold juice and the dough was mushy. I made the waitress aware (she had just taken over our table) and she put in another order. Not even 5 mins later, I get my second order. I noticed one bit was a little burnt on top but whatever at this point i'm not trying to ruin the experience for my friend. I go to pull apart my 2 bites and i notice the reason why they were stuck. The dough was RAW and the chicken inside was FROZEN. I had my friend poke it because i was shocked and couldn't belive this BS. Called the waitress over she was really sorry and i showed her how i couldn't even cut into the chicken and you could see the ice on the chicken. She offered to bring out another order but I was done. I didn't want to be disrespected yet again by this establishment. She said she would have the manager come talk to me. I didn't really care to do so but he came. He came to the table a little strong and aggressive. Telling me he actually touched the bite and it was WARM. My friend and I sat there SHOCKED! We all poked it and felt it ICE COLD!!!! So, basically calling me a liar to my face. He's telling me he will get another order out, I refused. I told him I would only pay for the 2 drinks and 1 order of the pot pies. He kept going on about how it was only the second day and he didn't hire enough staff and blah blah blah. I don't mind waiting i'm okay with that. But when others are seated before me and waited before me, then the food went from cold to FROZEN. I have a damn problem. He should've saved his "apology", if you can call it that. He did cover our 3 items which was the least he would do after all disrespect i've endured. I sat there waiting for my friend to finish her food and we finished drinks and left. Cindy our waitress took over after the first waitress left to lunch. She was really nice and none of this was her fault. I asked if I could tip her and she refused and said we didn't have to. I wanted to so I did. I insisted! At this point, the manager came around the corner and i could hear him on her about the tip. I had to intervene and tell him I WANTED TO DO THIS FOR HER. He was really out of line with her!!! She was trying to explain to him that i insisted on tipping and he was not listening to her! Get a new manager. This guy is not a people person. He's a gaslighting individual who has now cost you loyal customer. Days ago I get one of your loyal customer emails. Nice way of treating your loyal customers. P.S. It was very obvious who they wanted to seat & serve first and it wasn't the Latina and Black girl.

Here you actually have an option to sit at some tables. Decided to snack a little before packing the rest home. The fish is freshly made to order. Seasoned very well, tartar sauce definitely complimented it. The fries were cooked fresh and decently filled to the brim of the bag. The chicken was big let down. The wing was the first piece grabbed out the bag and the temperature wasn't there. No juice, just luke warm dried meat. The second piece I grabbed was the drumstick and again temperature was off. No juice or no steam. It didn't feel like these pieces were under any heat lamps. Felt left out as each piece eaten didn't really have any residual heat. 3rd piece I grabbed was the thigh which I mistook for a breast because it was bigger in size. After positioning in eat mode I decided to pack the rest home instead because the chicken wasn't hot enough. Funny thing is after 1 hour drive my chicken breast piece had some retained heat. Little did I realize the stellar fries kept the breast warm. Shame on this place ... even KFC is enjoyable once order is secured. Their hot sauce packed in cups were good Hopefully they work on the their chicken game because it's comical that their fish outshined the chicken.

I loved everything and even ate my friends leftovers with no shame. The ownership and the whole crew working there were upbeat and friendly. I loved this spot! I'll definitely be back. I'm all in on Darrows! Shiiid I'm family. Darrow Jeff

We celebrated my dad's 80th birthday at Darrow's, and I left with such a full heart…read more Of course, the food was delicious and everyone in our family enjoyed their meal, but it was the way Norwood, Linda, Joy, and the entire Darrow's staff treated my dad that made the day so special. There was such genuine warmth and kindness. They didn't make us feel like we were simply customers having a birthday dinner, they made us feel like family. As a daughter, there's something incredibly special about watching your dad turn 80 and seeing him happy, laughing, sharing stories about our family history, and surrounded by people who truly enjoyed celebrating him. By the end of the evening, it felt like Pops had gained a new Darrow's family, and that touched my heart. Thank you, Darrow's, for loving on my dad and helping our family celebrate 80 years of his life. You played an instrumental part in creating a memory that we will cherish for years to come. The food was wonderful, the service was exceptional, but the way you made my dad feel is what I'll remember most. Five stars PLUS! + We will absolutely be back.

Long Beach resident here.... since 1975 & I can honestly say this is the best Soulfood spot ive…read moreeaten in the city since I've been here (51 yrs old)!! Absolutely Delicious!! Been trying to get over there since they opened and I finally had some time today. Went right after brunch & ordered 2 smothered chicken dinners, both w Mac & cheese & the others with red beans & rice & collard greens. Some of the best Mac & cheese I've ever eaten at a Soulfood spot. Seasoned to perfection, creamy, gooey & the noodles were perfectly cooked. Red beans and rice reminded me of New Orleans style and they were excellent. I didn't try the collard greens, but my Pot'nuh said they were on point! I believe his taste buds.... Now let's get to the main entrée! A little bit of the gravy got on my finger when I was unpacking the plates.... (because I took them to go.) and when I licked my finger, I knew I was in for a treat! This fried chicken was seasoned like our ancestors lives dependent on it! I'm serious. It taste like something my grandmother made back in Oklahoma!! Wait wait!! Then they put this smothered chicken on the bed of rice dressing or dirty rice.... I don't know what it is, but it is off the hook! SMH smh ‍ Now I can't lie, the prices were a little higher than I expected, but they give you enough food for two meals. So the smothered chicken was $28 and if I break that down, I just split it in half and look at it like $15 a meal. Worth the price to me. I will definitely be back and I'm glad the place seems to be doing great! It was packed with folks after church in their Sundays BEST lookin & smelling good!! Great ambience and the young lady at the register was sweet as she wanted to be!! Nothing but great reviews from this Guyy!! Keep up the great work!
