Now I do not leave the beach often but when I do it's better be worth the trouble....and the trouble better be worth it. I've had a little birdie come to my window several times and tell me that there is indeed a soul food so good that the line is at least a 30-45 min wait for the food alone. That being said I was as curious as George to see this wondrous site outside of my daily travel routine and I must say I was pleasantly surprised to hear some 70's soul tallying all new comers like me to the cause! Let's call that rally and purpose "GOOD FOOD" moreover for the specific purpose of enjoying "GOOD SOUL FOOD" specifically". You the patron are now mesmerized because what first seemed to be a harmless crowd has now grown to a busy, full, grown, frenzy and this frenzy is full of a friendly, frolicking, fun, hungry bunch! Might I add the help was so nice I had a menu before I hit the door and it was a glorious dizzying 'slap ya mamma' meet and greet at that front entrance where- now with Franky Beverly tunes hypnotizing the late lunch eating crowd into a a single line behind the cash register! Me being of the more tech savvy flavor opted for the very up to date "point of sale" units located to the cashiers left of the cash register to dodge the growing line of hungry humans who had now assembled directly in front of on human running the cash register! Before I knew it the old classic "Thrill me Baby" by the Myron and the Van- Dells was being belted over the loud speaker and a kind worker checked on me as my order was sent from that machine to my cell phone which served not only as a seat but told me that in that see of hungry individuals I was behind only three people ! Now that my dear hungry neighbor is as good and fair as any eating establishment gets! Minutes later as the Myron and the Vandell's hit was coming to and end my brief theory minutes has now come to an end! As I made off with the merchandise I felt as though I had gotten away with murder knowing the ticket for the good was just shyt if $35.00 a dish! I scurried from the cash register when the smell of Fried Fish, baked beans. collard greens with a side of hot sauce had caught my attention because the potato salad and mac n cheese had already escaped the building unscathed !!!!! And with out that much fun fare I might add ! I went to this establishment on 5/10/26 Mothers day. It was crowded. I waited 30 min before anyone took my order. Then it too 90 min to get my food. The girl at the counter said I would get a text with the link in it so I can check the status of my food. Never got the text. Then I ask a light skinned girl the only light skinned one there , I asked, " what was taken so long." She said, "they had a lot going on and turned her back and nose up at me.. This was so unprofessional to tell a customer this. I text the owner because he invited me. I text him to share what happen and he never even bothered to text me back. As a professional worker if someone is concerned about your establishment and the wait time and the bad attitude of your staff. Inwould expect a call back or at least a text. I have to admit the food was very tasty and it was good, but hire people that are professional in my opinion. We've been on a mission to find some GOOD soul food and stumbled across this spot on Instagram and we had to try it. We got there right before opening, so luckily there wasn't a long line yet, but locals told us it usually gets packed... and they were right because the line grew fast after we ordered. They were trying out a new ordering system using kiosks and QR codes to help with customer flow. There was a small issue with the QR ordering, but Jamie (I believe the owner) stepped in immediately and personally helped take our order. He was so kind and welcoming, and he went around helping other customers too. The staff there were just as sweet checking on everyone, answering questions, and making the whole experience feel warm and inviting. Now the FOOD... whew. EVERYTHING was amazing. The oxtail was insanely tender, soft, rich, and literally melt-in-your-mouth good. The collard greens had the perfect smoky flavor without being overly spicy. The mac and cheese? Creamy, cheesy, rich, with that perfect toasted top. The garlic mashed potatoes tasted like heaven. And the baked beans??? Absolute perfection. The texture, the flavor, the balance ...not too watery or overly sweet/saucy. And the candied yams!!! SO good. They weren't overly sweet at all; perfectly balanced with just enough brown sugar caramelization and cinnamon. You could actually taste the seasoning instead of just straight sugar. And the ribs... ridiculously tender. Fall-off-the-bone good. My taste buds were having a full celebration. The portions are huge too !! April 29, 2026 Had a craving for Fried Shrimp and found this place on Yelp. Located on Anaheim near Long Beach Blvd, this spot has a parking lot. I ordered the Fried Shrimp dinner, which included Collards, Rice & Gravy and a piece of Cornbread. I also purchased a piece of Pound Cake. Took the meal home to devour. The Shrimp was perfectly fried with a delicious coating. Collards were cooked in smoked Turkey and had a wonderful taste with a nice vinegar backdrop. Rice & Gravy spiced just right. The Pound Cake was buttery and sweet. The meal was a little pricey but for this quality, well worth it. I will try their Oxtails on my next visit, if something else doesn't catch my eye. read more

My foodie friend told me about this restaurant (hey Dee) , I'm happy I tried it today 4/11/26. It's in Downtown Long Beach and lots of parking! The restaurant is nicely decorated. They have a DJ, that's a nice touch. The music was just a little loud to have lunch or dinner conversations or to order your food. But, it definitely didn't take away from the ambiance. I arrived at about 2:15 and was the 2nd in line. The cashier was courteous pleasant and very helpful as I wasn't sure what i wanted to order. I eventually ordered 2 plates, the oxtails plate with yams and green beans and the fried chicken plate with collard greens and the Gouda macaroni and cheese. I paid and provided my phone number for a text receipt. The cashier showed me how to know when my order was ready. There were 25 orders in front of me. My order was estimated to be ready in 40 minutes. I went to my car to wait and watch the countdown on my phone. I went back inside to wait when 5 orders were before mine. While waiting, a nice gentleman that was bringing out the orders asked me my name and said my order would be right up. All the food he was bringing to the front looked delicious! My order was now ready and as the timer hit zero at 3:30p, Jamie, the nice gentleman brought my food to the front! I was shown my food to confirm it was correct, the presentation was awesome!! My food was bagged by Jessica she was a sweetheart. I couldn't get everyone's name, but I promise the service was excellent especially considering how crowded it was. From what i could see the customers were pleasant and patient too. Let me add i usually drive to Los Angeles to get soul food at a well known soul food business. I won't have to drive as far now! My food was delicious..the greens were perfectly seasoned and I loved that turkey meat was used to season the greens. The Gouda Mac n cheese was perfectly cheesy! It was crowded so there was a little wait to order, if you're in a hurry, this is definitely not the place to go to. I love the decor, the whole vibe of the place. The food was excellent. I must say the only thing that I didn't like was the yams. The crispy jumbo shrimp, the beans, the greens and cabbage, the mac & cheese, the oxtail the cornbread and rice gravy. Went here today with my friend and got one of the chicken plates and the smothered ribs. With some cajun green beans. We got greens, baked beans, and mac n cheese for sides. Two drinks and everything came out to about $85. The portions are good for the price. Both plates were not finished and could take home left overs. The ribs were great definitely think the smoked ones are probably my preference. Our food took a while to come out and one of the employees came over and brought us out some deserts and drinks. The oxtail was very tender and the portion size was nice. I do think it could have used a little more seasoning, but it was still decent overall. One thing I really appreciated was the customer service. Even with the long wait and how busy it was, the service was A1, which is honestly rare sometimes. The staff stayed attentive and handled everything well. Also, just a heads up, if you are ordering oxtail, there may be an additional wait, but honestly everything was taking time because of how busy it was. Ambience-wise, it is pretty basic and more of a grab-and-go vibe than a sit-down dining experience. That said, I went on a Sunday and they had a live DJ playing great jams, which definitely added to the atmosphere and made the wait more enjoyable. Parking is a plus. When you walk in, you can order at a kiosk (credit card only) or pay cash at the register. Note that only one of the two kiosks was operational on my visit. The wait was a full hour and twenty minutes, long enough that I drove to a fast food spot nearby just to grab fries while I waited. On the bright side, the staff was genuinely phenomenal. Every employee was patient, smiling, and warmly greeted each guest. That energy was a real highlight. First trip was the fish and shrimp with greens and mac and the plate was delicious, second meal was the smoked BBQ ribs which was amazing with mac, beans and corn bread muffin! Again amazing. Came back for the smoked ribs again and they told me they didn't have any smoked and some type of smothered style ribs with which i was not a fan of! I should have just got the fried chicken instead. It takes a while to get the food. They did offer the room free lemonade which was nice. They have 2 bathrooms in the back which is good! I ordered from the kiosk machine. They also have a huge parking lot they share with a check cashing place. You won't have an issue parking here. The crew that works here are very nice. They have great desserts from peach cobbler, banana pudding, biscoff cheesecake and other goodies. I saw they have a beer station. Not sure if they are serving beer at the moment. Yelp has the location as closed but they are back up and running as of 3/15/26 when i visited. The oxtail was made to perfection on a bed of rice meat was falling right off the bone and the seasoning they used was perfect ! The Mac was ridiculous it was so bomb ! This place is sooooo good! I was blown away by the fish plate. Extra crispy fried fish and it came with 2 sides and a lice of corn bread. The corn bread was fire. We saw this place on yelp only a couple minutes from us and decided to check them out because of the 5 stars and trust me when I say, they did NOT lie about the food. Chef Jamie does not play about his food or the service and I highly recommend The Cultured Soul to anyone! No line and we ordered right at the ipad in front of the food truck. Even though we ordered there, we were still greeted by one of the workers in the truck and by Chef Jamie as well! The service here was absolutely amazing, everyone was kind and answered all our questions that we had. Ordering was quick and easy, however, we were bummed that some items weren't available like the ribs, potato salad and banana pudding but I won't discount them for that. Onto the food, it only took around 10-15 minutes for our food to be ready. Once it was, we took it straight home and didn't get to eat it until about 10-15 after. Order at 12:45 and received food at 1:55. Order Oxtails and they would not be done until 1:30 I was informed , so I was okay, but my Dad order Crispy fish and got chicken. The decor and seating could be a bit more modern, but it's a new spot so I'm sure that'll come with time. They also surprised me with a complimentary birthday dessert, which I really appreciated such a thoughtful touch! The only downside was the wait time. We arrived at 12:00 PM and didn't get our food until after 1:00 PM. I know things can get busy, but with premade sides, I think the timing could definitely improve. Such a great addition to the Long Beach community! We needed some good soul food around here! The owner was very sweet! You can tell you really cares about his customers. Nothing but positive things to say about this place. The atmosphere was very welcoming, the cashier was friendly, and the most important thing was the food was delicious!!! Stopped by this spot on my trip to Long Beach, the food was incredibly good. I got the southern fried chicken plate with some Gouda Mac and gravy mashed potatoes on the side and it was amazing. Service was great too, especially one of the servers Nina, I saw her making sure every customer was helped and I felt very appreciated when she'd ask if I needed anything. Came in was greeted with a smile and a friendly waitress, the ambience was of modern, but at the same time mama's house. I had the fried chicken and oxtails with mac & cheese. The greens were amazing and met the owner who was very pleasant plan on going back again. It's rare to find the soul food place that checks all the boxes you do have to wait a little bit because the food is cooked fresh but it's worth it. Good luck in this endeavor. read more
