I had to get fingerprinted the other day... No, really, it's for my new job. So naturally, I drove from Rancho Palos Verdes to Long Beach to get it done. And England Fish & Chips had been on my radar ever since it popped up, I think, from someone else's Yelp review or YouTube channel. This small spot is in the corner of a strip mall and I've heard the lines can be long at peak hours but at 3pm on a Wednesday, it was a breeze and the friendly and smiling owner gladly took my order. I ordered a "Snacker" Fish & Chips for 7 bucks and change and it came out after perhaps a 5 minute wait after ordering and piping hot. HOLY MOLY; this place is LEGIT. My go-to spot for Fish 'n Chips in L.A. has always been Ye Olde King's Head in Santa Monica but this place is closer and truly delicious. For just over $7, you get a very large piece of fish and a huge helping of fries. The breading is delicious and perfectly crispy. The fish inside is delicate, flakey and moist. Your meal is served with ketchup and delicious tartar sauce but I'm a traditionalist and love dousing my F&C with Malt Vinegar which is on every table in the joint. I had this placed bookmarked for awhile, and finally made it down here. My Mom loves fish and chips, so this was right up her alley....or so I thought...... We both went with the Deluxe Platter (1 fish, 1 jumbo shrimp, and 5 scallops, served with fries) and had a cup of water to drink. Took about 10 minutes for them to freshly fry everything. Eh...just ok. Deluxe Platter- Looked great! Tasted, just ok. The shrimp was delicious, wish I had gotten all shrimp. The scallops were pretty good too. It said it comes with 5 scallops, but we each got at least 8 or 9. They were small, but tasty. The fish though, a little disappointed. It was "watery" and the batter had absolutely no salt/seasoning on it. Same with the fries. No salt at all. My Mom liked it better than I did, but even she complained that it needed salt. I was very impressed with their fish and chips. I had been craving these for a while and I'm glad I found this spot. I only got the two piece with fries. The owners are super friendly and make the food fresh to order. My friend and I shared the combo two and added an extra fish. Everything was yummy but I'm not sure if I'm not used to the flavors but I feel like it could've used more salt. It seems like they don't salt the food immediately after coming out of the fryer. Cash only places are also interesting as to why the business can't get with the times of being cashless, but I get it and understand that for a small mom and pop business it can be expensive for them to pay the fees, credit companies charge. Our arrival was perfect. No one there except one diner who was finishing up. So I placed my order and still tables available out of the four tables they have in their tiny dining area. Our order came out so fast that when I returned from 7-eleven since they did not have coke products, the food was on the table and my wife had the owner wipe our table down. The food was on point. Very crispy, not too oily, but piping hot and fresh. The fish was a thick cod perfectly fried to a crunchy golden crisp. Our oysters, mushrooms and fries were also really crispy and great seafood flavor. Like I said, our timing was perfect because the door was opening and closing quite frequently with so many people ordering or picking up phone orders. Very surprised with how popular England Fish & Chips was and also how reasonable their pricing is. For the next time, I know not to order combos or the meal because I had a ton of fries. The seafood was all good and the batter was crispy. The fish was thick and juicy. I liked how the shrimp was formed into a ring, super unique. The scallops were moist despite being fried. The chips were just regular American fries, not the thick British chips. These all paired well with the creamy tartar sauce, tangy cocktail sauce, Heinz, vinegar, and ketchup. So good that I'm still relishing the smell of the fry in my car a day later. Amazing crispiness on the fish batter and the chicken. And much to my surprise, the fries are even a bit soggy by the time I got to it, which IS HOW I LIKE IT. Honestly, the best of both worlds for me. They provide good selection of condiments--points for service because they give it to you with your order instead of you having to walk to a condiment stand. Food is made to order, so everything is served piping hot. The protein/carb ratio is also good. The fish is not excessively battered to disguise the size of the fish within. The business is in a small strip mall at the intersection of W Willow St (x) Pacific Ave. The parking lot seems small; but the spaces turn over quickly. The on-site seating is really limited. The food is straight to the point; freshly fried and golden, and very generous in servings. I ordered the Deluxe combo and an order of onion rings, and everything was crispy and delicious. The onions were sweet, and there were definitely more than 10 pieces than advertised! The fish was thick (they definitely do not skimp on portion), shrimp was delicious, and the scallop were juicy. Definitely a 10/10! The owners were so kind and were generous in accommodating my request to change my order, and I noticed that they always offer extra sauces when customers come up to pick up their order. I'm blessed with the best neighbors two houses down from me. Gloria & Benjamin, Ben is always on a side quest exploring restaurants within a two hour drive radius. On random days, I get a message from the neighborhood hero, side quest Ben. He'll ask me "Do you want to place an order, and watch shows with us?" 98% of the time I don't refuse. This week we ordered Fish & Chips and it was savory. I selected nothing and asked to be surprised. Honestly the quality is amazing for the price, and far exceeded my expectations. The tartar sauce is definitely prepared from scratch, and the portions are rather large. I recalled my late night dinners as a child scrapping the last bit of tartar sauce from an over priced glass jar, and my god the taste of this took me back in time. They also offer fried vegetables and pineapple, the fruit was surprisingly tasty and still juicy when fried. I would definitely order again. If you see my third photo, we did add our own homemade coleslaw. Not sure if they offer any, but we were looking forward to this and planned ahead of time. My neighbor side quest Ben prepared the Coleslaw from scratch. They do provide fresh sliced lemons and I highly recommend pairing the fish with the lemon. Well judging by the other Yelp reviews, I am definitely in the minority and will not be returning. First impression as I entered the parking lot, was that I've seen Trader Joe's locations with better parking lots. Exiting my car, I was surprised that there were so many unhoused individuals sleeping in this tiny strip mall. And they are not shy about asking for money. When I entered the location, it was busy and a "cash only" business. This allowed me to believe the food would be delicious. It was not. And I felt lucky that I didn't donate any of the few bucks I had before entering because wehad just enough for my order. We both ordered the Deluxe: 1 piece fish, 1 jumbo shrimp, 5 piece scallops, and chips. We also ordered onion rings. The fried fish was almost ok. The shrimp was ok. The scallops were offensive, they should not be fried. Fries were odd tasting. And the onion rings were ok but I wouldn't order them if I were you.
