I've been coming here for as long as I have lived in North Long Beach. This one here was by far the best one on this side of town. Actually probably all of Long Beach. I used to love this place and one of my favorite pre pandemic. I stopped by today and I was surprised how the quality is just not where it used to be. The fish filet was smaller and thinner. The chicken wings was small and no meat. I'm not sure if there was a change of ownership. But looks like they are cutting cost without raising the prices to much. When I checked my order in the car I was surprised to find that the family basket was comprised of nuggets/chunks of fish rather than filets. I ordered 8 pieces of Orange Roughy, which had an additional fee and 2 pieces of Catfish. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed with my order and am giving it 2 stars for being misrepresented as a family sized portion as well as the negative response from the gentleman who worked there. He is well aware that the wording is misleading for the amount of food they are serving and sarcastically asked if I wanted more fish. The taste of the fish isn't so bad but the pieces have gotten smaller and very dry and thin. For those who don't know, all of these "Louisiana fried fish establishments used to be owned by southern black folks. They are almost all Asian owned now. They are almost an exact copy of the original recipe. So most are on point and I go there anyway. I found another establishment and it is my take out go to. Mine taste better than all of them! I was reminiscing about this little place today for some reason. Maybe because we had fish and chips last night from a local fish grill restaurant. I discovered this gem when I was a single guy living in Lakewood nearly 20 years ago and pretty much became a regular customer. It's in an unassuming location next to a laundromat and I'm glad to see it's still around. Their fried catfish is amazing and incomparable to any other fried catfish I've had. It really takes you to the South. It's that blend of cornmeal and Louisiana spice that gives it that special crust. And that homemade tarter sauce, indescribable. You'd have to try it yourself. This is my family and my bf's family's go to fish spot! It was coincidence that we all go to the same place! This time around I got the red snapper combo with shrimp, hush puppies, and fries. The fish is always fresh and hot when I get it, hush puppies have a kick since they have jalapeños in them, love that!
