Amazing definitely coming back . Services was great. They have soo much choices to choose from. But food is really good.

Absolutely delicious soul food! We ordered the oxtail plate with mac and cheese, greens, and finished off with a creamy banana pudding for dessert. We also tried the shrimp dinner with fries and a warm, perfectly spiced peach cobbler. Every dish tasted fresh and full of flavor, made with quality ingredients. Portions were average but satisfying, and the prices were very reasonable. The customer service was excellent -- friendly, attentive, and welcoming. Highly recommend for anyone craving authentic, home-style comfort food!

After my mani and pedi, I wandered a couple of stores down and found myself at the Gumbo Shack. It's got that fast-food-meets-Louisiana feel, with vibrant, colorful art on the walls--one side showcasing a lively New Orleans scene, the other filled with pictures of people. And of course, jazz music filled the air, setting the perfect mood. I ordered the small gumbo. For the record, I love gumbo. I've even had the chance to visit Louisiana, where I basically ate gumbo every single day. So while the gumbo here wasn't quite at that New Orleans level, it was still pretty good and hit the spot. Like many places these days, it's a little on the pricey side--so my advice? Eat it slow, savor the flavor, and let it take you on a little Southern escape.

Today I told my Husband let's go check Sal's Gumbo Shack in Long Beach that we seen on Black Restaurant Week in Long Beach because it looked delicious on the news today. Well let me tell y'all that you better go check it out because Ms. Sally can cook ‍ This Southern Food right here in the LBC is delicious From the moment we got out the car we could smell the food. It's a great spot with plenty of parking in a safe area. The restaurant was very clean and well organized with a nice selection of food options on a big menu on the wall. The atmosphere and such beautiful Murals on the walls the artwork was amazing. Love the vibe of New Orleans once you came through the doors very nice Ms. Sally greeted us with that Southern hospitality and grace. She was very welcoming and helpful with menu suggestions. Made sure to let us know that her food is cooked too order so it be a few minutes preparing our food. The music was lovely in the background while sitting waiting for our food. I had the Cajun Shrimp dinner which comes with two sides and I chose Collard Greens and Fried Pickles with a Sweet Tea plus it came with a slice of homemade Cornbread. The Husband had Cajun Fried Catfish with Yams and Macaroni and Cheese with a slice of Cornbread and a Sweet Tea. Our food was delicious and we enjoyed Ms. Sally's hospitality and we will definitely visit Sal's Gumbo Shack in Long Beach again!!! Thank you for the great customer service and outstanding service and I applaud your extra measure of care for your customers!

Catfish and shrimp Po'boy with a side of mac and cheese.

I ordered the catfish and shrimp pi boy. I subbed out the fries for a slight up charge of the Mac and cheese. Being a cheese and macaroni connoisseur- I had to try it. Big mistake. It was barely a step above boxed Kraft, Mac and cheese. No real flavor or texture. Not cheesy. Seasoning was almost there but not quite. You won't miss this at all! After 3 bites I decided it wasn't worth the calories. The Po'boy had 2 pieces of catfish and 5 shrimp. Not skimpy, but nothing I'd describe as decadent. The fish and shrimp were fried imperfection and tasty! The sauce was delicious but he bun wasn't toasted- which would have added to the experience and the lettuce and tomato were barely there. I asked for onion and the kitchen didn't have any they could put on my sandwich- weird. Would I come back? I'd come back for another Po'boy- maybe the all shrimp with extra shrimp. I'd definitely asked for the bread to be toasted. The sandwich was good but could be better with minor tweaks. 3 more shrimp would have helped. The service was nice and friendly. There was no one in the restaurant but it has a cool very NOLA ambiance.

Fried Chicken with Rice & Gravy Mac & Cheese Candied Yams

If you know me and my kids, then you already know--we're always on the hunt for soul food spots that really hits the soul. So we decided to try our second soul food spot for delivery. We ordered the smothered chicken with mac and cheese with candied yams, plus the fried turkey chop plate with all the same fixin's. First off--the candied yams - wow! My kids were all in. Sweet, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth goodness. And that fried turkey chop? Gone in minutes. Juicy, crispy, and full of flavor. A bit salty, but balanced out with the sides. They did not want to share that haha. I had the smothered chicken... and while it was seasoned just right and came with rice and gravy that was delicious, I was missing that crunch - it was a bit soggy (maybe because it was delivered), but the flavors didn't disappoint. I really liked the Mac and cheese! It had more of a sophisticated flavor that I can't really describe- it was more dry which I think I prefer vs. creamy- But my little food critics like theirs super creamy, so they gave it a pass this time. It's okay because I devoured it all! lol Anyways the hunt continues--but this one definitely had some soul-satisfying highlights. If y'all know any spots we should try next, drop the recommendations! The soul food search squad is on a mission here to feed the hungry soul.

This is my catfish dinner with a side of yams and red beans and rice. Small gumbo and fries (missing)

I don't normally write reviews but really!?!? See picture. Ordered fries as well but missing from order. I thought I was ordering catfish filets not nuggets. Hardly any meat inside the really thick coating of the fish. Just really disappointed. Not worth it

The food here did not taste like fast food type quick maid. This was real honest to goodness southern soul food also the way you could tell that it was a great place to eat. If it wasn't ready, they took their time to make sure it was right. the service is top-notch. It's soul food in a strip ball. How much ambience do you think there should be this place is about that food. I know y'all are gonna go out and try this now so yeah.

    Gumbo soooo good

Finally got to try Sal's. Their new location in Bixby Knolls is def an upgrade from the original little hole-in-the-wall spot. You can actually find parking now haha. Was feeening some gumbo, so had that, also ordered the Jambalaya and a Shrimp Poboy. Poboy was good, if they sauce up all the shrimps in the sauce they give in the side, Gumbo is always good at Sals, and jambalaya was yummy. Be ready to wait for your food. Even my take-out was not ready in time. Not mad at it tho, food is made with live and takes time. Def want to try the sides and maybe Oxtails next time.

    Fried Chicken Plate

I've been to the Long Beach Blvd. location, however, this is my first time here at the Bixby Knolls location. The inside of the restaurant makes you feel like you are in New Orleans. Nothing fancy, clean vibe. Sal's is known for their Gumbo, but they do have other good soul food selections on the menu. I ordered the Fried Chicken Plate 3 pieces and it comes with 2 side dishes of your choice and cornbread. I went with Red Beans and Rice and Candied Yams. My friend ordered the Catfish Dinner Plate with Mac and Cheese and Fried Okra. Everything is made to order, be prepared to wait. Good food takes time. The fried chicken was lightly battered, and crispy on the outside but very moist and had good flavor but a bit salty to my taste. The red beans and rice were excellent. The candied yams were good but a bit sweet. My friend Catfish Plate was just average. The catfish filet was too small, more like nuggets but fried well. I love the Mac and Cheese, creamy and cheesy. The fried okra was just average. I wish they give free refills on lemonade and iced tea. The service was excellent. Very welcoming and friendly and had great updates while we were waiting. Will come back again.

    Dinner is served...

I enjoyed the gumbo and the salmon bites were delicious. Nice atmosphere with Sade music playing in the back ground.

No complaints on the food. All was delicious. The presentation was good. The Collard Greens was fresh as well as all the entrees we received. All was Yummy. The service we received was from a bus boy. I forgot his name, he was tall and Hispanic. This guy did a very good job. He was nice and courteous. Always checking up on patrons as well as saying by to all the patrons that were leaving. Great personality. Overall, I would come back for some soul food. This is one of a few places you can eat soul food in the city of Long Beach with a nice view. If you like soul food and you don't mind ordering your food first, this is the place for you! The only thing I noticed was the tables were sticky and grimy. They could use some work. Parking is very tough to find. You can be frustrated pending on day and hour you come to shoreline. They validate parking which is a good thing.

Portion-wise, we left comfortably full and only slightly questioning our life choices. The Shrimp Lover Combo can't be modified. We chose Stinkin' Special and Spicy, which came with a plastic glove so you can dig in like a civilized gremlin. The Stinkin' Special was a generous blasts of Old Bay and enough garlic to ward off vampires. The Mad Dog sauce wasn't shock-your-soul spicy, but it definitely lingered. I was still feeling its friendly burn hours later and well into the evening. The LOBSTER ROLLL was tasty but fleeting. It's one of those dishes that makes you realize the meal is almost over right when you're hitting peak satisfaction. A little emotional damage there. We wrapped it all up with deep-fried Oreos and ice cream, which was an instant win. Sweet, cooling relief after all that heat. Bristy, our server, thoroughly explained the details of certain dishes such as the Mac & Cheetos. She also checked in on our table throughout the meal and came around often to refill our water. As for the food itself, it was very delicious. My favorite dish was the artichokes. They had a somewhat smoky flavor and the outermost leaves were crunchy and a nice contrast to the soft inside of the artichokes. They were also served in a tangy sauce that complimented the vegetable well. My friend's favorite item was the macaroni and cheese. It was chewy and creamy, and the pasta, which Bristy informed us was made in-house, was what my friend thought elevated the dish because it was a nice texture. We additionally ordered the gumbo which was also tasty but not as yummy as the other two dishes that we ordered. It is not a spicy dish if one is concerned about spice level. There is inside seating what looks like a converted house? There is outside seating at tables or at the bar. The menu was interesting which had a theme of shrimp; there was eggs Benedict with shrimp, but not an item to order a regular one without it? Sure maybe could have ordered and asked without shrimp but pay the same price? Pass. Ok when I called they mentioned they serve brunch until 3? 3:30 I can't remember. The server mentioned they serve the brunch all day? Either way when I got to ordering this month on the menu it highlighted the shrimp po boy. I tried to order and nope, out. How can you be out of the item highlighted as the special in the middle of the day? When the place is not packed? I tried to order the lobster roll and again, out. I was tempted to order their short rib poutine since in theory it sounded good, but at this point I tried something simple I would hope they have in the kitchen chicken and waffles. The plate came and it looks good. If you look at the picture at the bottom of the chicken you can see a dark something. As I lift my chicken I found a huge burnt piece of breading pictured next. On top of the chicken is green onion I think? Who eats that with chicken and waffles? If I am wrong, a garnish is totally unnecessary for this dish. The chicken was moist. There are spices in the flour breading I can see but hard to taste what it is. The waffle is a hard pass for me. The waffle was crispy which is good, but also thin and dry and I couldn't taste any sweetness until I put maple syrup on it. The syrup came out warm which was nice. It's clear watching the people at the bar this is a local hangout. The chicken and waffles were $19 which if I was in the bay I think it's about right, but I think a little high considering the level of food I got. Supposedly this place is packed specifically on Sundays. The server doesn't know why? I'm not interested to even try to come back for a second chance and just be told sold out of the menu.
