My parents heard great things about Roast Duck Kitchen. Since we were already in the Aiea area, we decided to stop on by. I called several times with no success. It turns out that they are usually so busy on Saturdays, they rarely answer the phone. Good to know. We stood in line for about 10-15 minutes, and eventually got called in. All I'm saying is - be prepared to order! Our food was ready within 10 minutes. The gau gee is a darker color than most, but quite flavorful. My only complaint is that it was pretty salty. The duck, crispy roast pork, and garlic chicken were all delicious. Overall, Roast Duck Chicken was rather impressive. Ducks go here to be delicious. I could not find this place the first time but being persistent pays off. When I finally found the place, it stands out with the bright red background and gold colored Chinese characters. The inside looks like one of those small kitchens you picture in china town. You know here are a couple of fridges to the side, a display of the ducks hanging in front of a glass case, and a guy with a clever ready to chop away on an old wooden cutting block. I decided to get half a duck and a pound of roast pork aka lechon. I wanted to get some char sui but they ran out. This is all take out since there is no seating. The duck was delicious. Now I know what all the rave was about. It wasn't greasy and seasoned to perfection. The skin was crunchy and meat tender. I've seen on TV how they make Chinese roast duck and the time it takes. The cook made great use of the time. The roast pork too good. The skin made a cracking sound when you bite into it. And the juices just flowed out of the meat. I had some lechon sauce in the frigid and it took the flavor over the top. Overall four stars. Taste was five stars but location and no char sui knocked off a star. The sign on the door says "Roast Duck Kitchen" and they sure as hell do some great roast duck. But someone should just change that to 'Roast Meat' because damnnn their other meats looked AMAZING--and a lot were already sold out by the time I got there. Also, note, I don't know why people are saying it's cash only because they do accept credit card. It's even on their door/case window. This hole in the wall is tucked away on the second floor of the Aiea shopping center, but don't worry about getting lost, it's right in front of the elevator as you get off! Don't worry about feeling intimidated, the Auntie who handles things in the front is so so nice (adorable and to the point). I ended up getting half the roast duck with char sui fried rice. They threw in two gau gee for me since I've never had them before. The duck was tender, fatty, flavorful--and then you dunk it in their duck sauce and wooow it's a mouthful of flavor explosions. That sauce was so good, my fiance and I ended up pouring it over the rest of our char sui rice. Waste not want not hahaha. The gau gee was crispy and fresh out of the fryer. I don't know how to describe it, it's like a cross between an egg roll and an empanada. Shaped like an eggroll, pastry more like an empanada, filling is moist and savory... Holy duck, this place is such a hidden gem. I absolutely love roast duck and roast pork.. I found this place on yelp, and it's just down the street from my house. I had a hard time finding it, but it's located right across from McDonald's on the second level of the Aiea shopping center. Epitome of a hole in the wall. There's no indoor seating, some tables outside though. Service is very fast and everyone there is friendly. For $12, I get their combo plate that includes a generous portion of roast duck, roast pork, rice, and cabbage. Everything is super tasty. The only thing is that sometimes parts of it are a bit salty, so it's perhaps unevenly seasoned during preparation? But I love that the pork is SOOO crispy and juicy. The chinese lady behind the counter will expect you to have your order figured out and quickly pick between your type of rice because there are probably about 10 people in line as well. We came after visiting Pearl Harbor. This is definitely a take-out restaurant. Stopped by on a Sunday because of all the great reviews, so it was empty and quiet. We ordered a whole roast duck, the guy chopped it up for us, and he had a side of fried rice. The duck is actually pretty cheap at $25. I buy frozen for $20, and in Chinatown you can get only half a duck for $20-$25. Anyway, took it home, set the table, and...the duck was cold. I guess they don't like to keep it warm while waiting to be sold? I could have heated it up, so that's not a major deal. Secondly, the duck was sitting in a puddle of cold oil/fat. Again, I could have taken it out, placed it on napkins on a plate, but it was so oily and cold...it was disgusting. However, we were both hungry, so we dug in. The fried rice was cold, too, but decent, no complaints. The skin was soft, not crispy at all, like I make it at home. By now I was pretty disappointed and wondering why this place had 5-star reviews; I've had better roasted duck at Panda Express. Well, we ate most of it around 6pm, drank only water. Went to bed around 10:30 pm, and....we couldn't sleep! I mean, we fell asleep, but both of us kept waking up all night! We were both tossing and turning; we would fall asleep, but then wake up - wide awake. It was like that all night. On a whim, I googled "Does MSG keep you awake" and found a quite a few articles about it. I'm not saying they DO use it, but I can't think of any other causes for us staying awake most of the night. We don't drink soda, and didn't drink coffee that evening. So I assume they used A LOT of MSG on those ducks. Finally, I'm a bit of a cook and know how to make Peking Duck, and while I was there waiting, I was talking to the lady. I asked her how they separated the skin of the duck before roasting; did they blow into the neck skin and inflate it that way? Some people use a air pump...the reason is, true Peking Duck is made by first blowing into the skin to inflate the duck like a football, which separates the skin, allowing the skin to become crispy and the fat under the skin to melt. This is part of the official recipe from the royal kitchen in ancient China. Anyway, the lady looked at me oddly and said they don't do any of that. Which is why my duck's skin was soggy and the thing was floating in oil. Sorry, but I can't recommend this place; the duck was simply cold, oily, not crispy, and was most likely coated with MSG. read more

RDK used to be my go to for roast duck even tho I live on the other side of the island. That is until today. Today the duck wasn't chopped in front of me. The staff had a box of roast duck ready to go, they didn't open it for me to see. Just took it from the side and placed it in a bag. I should have known better and checked it myself to prior to leaving. Tucked away in a corner under Aiea bowl in an unassuming store front is a hidden gem of crispy porky deliciousness. The roast duck on cake noodle was excellent. The roast pork was crisp and juicy. Went RDK and once again the lady in front of me must have been from the mainland. Maybe she was a local once then moved to the mainland then was here on a visit. Well she walks in and was asking questions about the menu. The lady behind the counter was irritated and told her to step out and she waved me in and I had my order memorized. Went there to try the roast pork, fell in love with the crispy Gaugee. I am a roast pork/lechon aficionado. I love a crispy skin cooked to an airy crunch which provides texture while remaining easy to bite through. The meat shall also be cooked to a happy medium neither dry nor slimy. Of course seasoning is essential as well. Roast Pork from Roast Duck has it all! However, today I needed a little more than just Roast Pork and the lady suggested Gaugee. So glad I tried it! Pork sausage stuffed in a wonton wrapper and fried to a crunchy golden brown. The shoyu mustard served with it was the perfect complement. I will be returning for the Gaugee. This place is kind of tricky to find as the shopping complex has entrances at three different levels along the street. Use the middle entrance which is also the McDonald's drive through. The restaurant is not visible from the parking lot. Just walk to the Diamond Head side of the complex. The Gaugee are well worth the small effort it takes to find the place.
