The food is good, every time. I think they wait until it's ordered to cook it. Needlessly, I would recommend it despite the wait. It travels well, so order it for takeout or delivery because there isn't much of a dining experience. You're likely to be the only one eating there if you so choose.
My colleagues had been raving about the infamous Honey Butter sandwich at Roaming Rooster, so that had definitely built up the anticipation in my mind. Overall I would say that it tasted good - but my sandwich was much much oiler than the others made in the same order. As it was a chicken spot, I also tried the whole chicken wings; and unfortunately I found them to be massively over seasoned and I could barely finish one. The fries were also not so much to my liking. The majority of them were super short, and seemed more like the "ends" of the fries than a whole one. It could have been that it was an off day, or maybe something with my particular order. There was a long queue of people grabbing lunch - so clearly there's something about this place that many many people love! So, don't necessarily take my word for it... You could have a different experience!!
I consider myself a chicken sandwich connoisseur. As a fan of the Roaming Rooster food truck from before the pandemic back when I used to work in downtown D.C., I was excited to try this brick and mortar store. As luck would have it, this came to fruition this past weekend after a meeting I had at the neighboring brewery. Me and two colleagues came for lunch and we ordered a LOT of food. They each got the club sandwich while I got the honey butter sandwich and we also ordered some of the hand cut fries and some cole slaw. The fries were incredible -- big Five Guys vibes here as they were fresh, crispy, and had that Boardwalk fry texture. Big bonus was the portion size (we probably would've been fine sharing a single order among 3 people). The cole slaw was refreshing and helped cut through the richness of our individual sandwiches. It's definitely not the heavy, creamy mayo type of cole slaw, so keep that in mind when ordering. On to the sandwiches -- they were massive. Multiple pieces of juicy, plump, crispy, well seasoned chicken stacked high on soft toasted buns. The honey butter sandwich I had was salty, savory, sweet, but definitely required lots of napkins. My friends each enjoyed their club sandwiches and commented on the crispness of the bacon and sauce. Overall, the 3 of us were more than pleased. The shop is very unassuming and has limited seating, so I could see how getting a place to sit during a lunch rush might present an obstacle or two. That said, the place is very casual and gives an upscale fast food vibe similar to what you'd expect from say a Shake Shack or an In-N-Out on the west coast. The person who served us was incredibly nice, but I expected that considering the people who operated the food truck were incredibly kind and accommodating back when I frequented it. So happy the vibes carried on from the food truck to their in person shop! Now I just need to try this fabled breakfast sandwich I've heard about...
I have had Roaming Rooster on my radar for a very long time now, ever since the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich craze days, bc it was the suggestion of a friend. I found myself close to DC today and said what the heck? I was nervous about lines and didn't know that there was more than one location, I thought I was going to the historic first site but I stumbled on this hidden little gem and I'm almost glad that I did. For starters, there was no line, I walked straight up to the counter. The lady at the register was extremely nice and helped guide me through the spice levels before deciding on what I wanted. I ordered (2) Honey Buttered Chicken Sandwiches(med level) & hand cut French fries. I loved it. Absolutely loved it. The chicken was delicious, and it was just the right portion of honey and butter. I think, in the future, I'm going to go with the hot version of this sandwich bc there really wasn't much spice at all with mine but it was delicious nonetheless.
We were super excited to try this place based on the reviews. My son is a foodie and loves chicken sandwiches. I really like Buttermilk fried chicken. Oh so so good. Here's a review of our experience. Customer Service - we were never greeted. Even when I greeted the Spanish looking girl at the register saying "hello, this is our first time here". She says "may I take your order" in the most non enthusiastic way. I felt they could careless for our business based on the look on both ladies who served us faces and attitudes. Yet, we continued on still excited to try there chicken. My son order the regular Chicken Sandwich that comes with coleslaw in Hot heat as he likes spicy food. I had the 3 whole wings In medium heat. We shared an order of fries. I've never heard of fries fried twice. My son explained the concept to me about how it gives it a nice crisp and I was excited to try it. Food results - my son said the chicken sandwich was not at all spicy and had too much coleslaw in it. It wasn't very flavorful either. He's definitely had much better. My wings were too spicy for my tastebuds. An hint of spice to add or bring out the flavor is all I can handle. I couldn't even finish one of them. I gave them to my son which he commented it's spicer than his sandwich. We think they mixed up the spice levels on our orders. Both of us also felt the wings weren't flavorful especially for being buttermilk along with lacking in the right crisp and texture. I really like and have had much much better buttermilk fried chicken. Unfortunately, it was an expensive disappointing experience. Now we know and will look elsewhere. Sorry I cannot recommend this place.

After selling Nashville hot chicken from food trucks for 4 years, RR has recently opened its first brick and mortar in Northeast DC. It's located in a small mall near Eastern Avenue. The space is straight forward, clean and efficient. The hot chicken is peppery. Reminds me very much of Gus's in Greenbelt, MD. I think the best value is the chicken tenders option, since that's what's in all their sandwiches--get more poulet that way. The mac 'n cheese has some heat in it too; not a fan of that. The pickles are good. read more

Ordered regular fried chicken sandwiches (medium spice), slaw, and fries. So delicious! The chicken was tender and juicy. The slaw is an unusual and refreshing departure from the usual, flavored with cilantro and jalapeño. The fries were very enjoyable, even after the crosstown trek home. Word of advice: Medium heat/spice is potent but not unpleasant or overpowering (ymmv). We added blue cheese dressing at home, which toned it down a bit but not too much. read more

ATTENTION DC SHOPPERS: Stop wasting your money at other fried chicken sandwich spots and support black-owned businesses!! I will never in my life pay ~$20 for a chicken sandwich and fries again in the DC area (here's looking at you Melange & Lucky Buns - see my previous reviews). For $11 you too can have an amazing honey butter chicken sandwich, fries, and a coke. AND the nice man in the food truck even put some extra sriracha aioli on there because I am sure he could sense that I love hot sauce. Please note that is a review of the Roaming Rooster Food truck and I cannot comment on the restaurant itself. read more
@roamingrooster1 is the G.O.A.T. of chicken sandwiches! I hadn't been around their way (NE, DC) in a while...but when I got over there let me tell you...I immediately fell in love all over again with this spot! And I promise to never spend this much time away again. The honey butter chicken sandwich is life! Also, they give you an option of how spicy you would like to get the sandwich. I recommend medium spice level but please know it has some kick to it just like l like it. When I got home I was at the kitchen table kicking my legs up and down like a little kid as I ate this one here! And yassss the pic I took is accurate that's how the butter drip off all their honey butter chicken sandwiches. Note: they have a physical location in NE, DC and a food truck that travels the city. Roaming Rooster has been on my list for almost a year now, however due to covid I had to postpone my trip. They are not open for dine in, but you can get takeout. I got the honey fried chicken and O-M-G it was amazing. I honestly could eat three of them. Hopefully I can try them again once they're open for dine again and get the full experience. read more

I'm just gonna say it. They didn't just put their foot in it. They must have done the sanctified stomp cuz my taste buds thanked God after I took a bite of my sandwich. I ordered for delivery. The food was well-boxed and wrapped. It came warm, was the right order, and the amount of chicken on each sandwich was a pleasant surprise. We ordered the Nashville Hot Fried Chicken Sandwich and the Club Sandwich. Both were just the right amount of crunchy and heat. Since you can choose your own heat level, I went with hot. It's hot. They are not playing around. I can't wait to try the other menu items. read more

Y'all this sandwich here...believe the hype! Today, I had the best chicken sandwich ever!! I've day dreaming about my cheat meal all week and knew exactly what I was going to treat myself to. I'd been hearing a lot of buzz about the Roaming Rooster, so I had to check it out for myself. We placed our order online at 12:00pm in the parking lot and at 12:15pm we were back in the car eating. The process was seamless and the staff was working very hard at the front door to make sure everyone received their food. There were also markers on the ground -- adhering to the CDC social distancing rules. I was starvingggg, so I could not wait to indulge. I ordered the honey butter chicken sandwich it comes with cheese but I also added tomatoes, lettuces and pickles with a side of fries (that you don't need because the sandwich is enough). Also, I really didn't need the lettuce and tomato the sandwich is that good alone. The sandwich was light, juicy, the breading wasn't fried hard, the bites with the honey butter were the best. The chicken was also seasoned to perfection not salty at all. 10s across the board my friends!! Highly recommend, I will definitely be going back. read more
I first tried these chicken sandwiches from their food truck about a year ago, more recently have been ordering from their permanent location, and every single time I'm still talking about how it's the BEST fried chicken sandwich I've had. The Nashville Hot sandwich, extra hot, is my favorite, and the chicken is actually spicy. They serve a good portion of fried chicken in these sandwiches with perfectly crispy breading, not too heavy or greasy, complimented with tasty slaw, pickle, and jalapeno. The fries are good too, especially with their honey mustard sauce. They also offer a salad (fried chicken over slaw), which would get you the flavors of the sandwich in a different format, probably good, but I haven't tried it. read more

Got take out from here recently and can't wait to go back! I ordered online unsure of COVID lines or if I could order there - seems everyone had the same idea. Luckily the pickup line went pretty quick and I was able to grab my food to head back home. This sandwich was one of those times I wish I had gotten two (though I know couldn't eat that much) I wanted to experience it again - so good! Delicious flavor. Ordered fries with it which were good too. If you have Old Bay at home - highly recommend sprinkling a bit of it on them. read more
I tried this place on my last trip to DC, personally I don't like fried chicken sandwiches that much and I don't eat them very often, but i heard about this place so I decided to check it out and let me tell you i was not disappointed at all. Another amazing black owned restaurant and I highly recommend the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich! I ordered with medium spice and my mouth was on fire by the end. Bread is nicely buttered and toasted. The slaw was crunchy and paired perfectly with the chicken seasoning. Chicken was crispy and thick even about an hour and half after I pick up the sandwich. Can't wait to try their other chicken sandwiches! read more

Delicious burgers! Was visiting the DC area and saw this popular chicken sandwich spot! The Buffalo chicken burger with extra spice is perfect, so spicy you needed a second to process. All the other sandwiches were also really good, not too dry with enough toppings and sauce. We also got some fries, but the sandwich filled us up so much that we couldn't finish it!! read more

I consider myself a fried chicken connoisseur and WOW, there's a reason why this super casual spot started as a food truck in 2015 and today is a brick & mortar restaurant with multiple food trucks throughout the DMV. There's a reason why Roaming Rooster is consistently mentioned when folks start talking about where to get the best fried chicken in the city. You can pick your level of spice, it's always crowded but the line moves quickly, and with five chicken sandwich options on the menu (plus great additions like chicken & waffles) this spot has something for everyone. It's that good... So go support a local, black & immigrant owned business, and get yourself some juicy, fried, delicious. read more

I came here with a friend because we were craving a fried chicken sandwich and Roaming Rooster looked delicious. Luckily it's not inner city DC so parking was easy to find. It was quite busy when I ordered but we got our food within 10-15 minutes. I ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich and my friend ordered the Nashville Hot Sandwich. Both were delicious! The chicken was moist and the seasoning was flavorful. The Nashville sandwich was definitely better than the buffalo sandwich. Never able to catch the Roaming Rooster on foot, I made it my business to actually get in my car yesterday and catch this fan favorite at their brick and mortar on Bladensburg Road. And honey, it was worth the angst of DC traffic and my burning desire to stop global warming--I could of caught the bus, but I had a five month schedule engagement I needed to attend to at 2:15 p.m. --so please go easy on me. When my girlfriend and I arrived at Roaming Rooster it was packed---I saw that we were not alone in our journey to catch this rooster. Although packed, the staff at Roaming Rooster was effective and efficient at getting each customer's order placed and in their hands. I was impressed and pleased with their service. With much anticipation and joy, we placed our orders for the Honey Butter Fried Chicken Sandwich Combo and the Nashville Hot Chicken--mind you bae had already hyped up this adventure by saying this would be better than Chick fil a, so my interest was peaked. Within five minutes of placing my order, our food was ready --seriously, the little people in my stomach were doing back flips of joy. When I opened my Nashville Hot Chicken box, it looked picture perfect. The bun was golden, the two pieces of fried chicken breast looked Instagram-worthy, the pickles and slaw tied the sandwich into a perfect bow. I must warn you, I had the medium spice level of the Nashville Hot Chicken and it was delicious. It is truly one of the best Chicken sandwiches I ever had...even better than chicken fil a spicy chicken sandwich. After smashing my Nashville Hot Chicken, I sampled my girlfriend's Honey Butter Friend Chicken Sandwich Combo. It dripped honey and butter. It was juicy, tender and flavorful, but if I had to choose I would go with the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich every time. With the combo came hand cut fries and a fountain drink. The hand cut fries were salted perfectly and very addicting. A great choice to any chicken sandwich on the menu. I can't wait to come back and smash the Nashville Hot Chicken again--it was just that damn good. And I'm going to increase my heat level. Roaming rooster is located in a somewhat small shopping center, there's a parking lot located right in front of the restaurant, my friend and i visited on a Monday evening around 6pm and there was ample parking available. Roaming rooster was definitely a close runner up to Popeyes. I got the "medium heat" fried chicken sandwich. It comes with slaw and even though it was "medium" it sure was a pretty spicy sandwich. The sandwich is huge, it comes with 2 patties. Unlike the other chicken sandwich restaurants, i like that the emphasis is on the chicken patty. The patty was very well seasoned. But for the price, i would think it would come with a little mayo or some type of sauce. Luckily i keep chic-fil-a sauce in my purse (yes, I'm a die hard fan) and that really saved the sandwich a lot because it was dry without it and it helped to mellow out the spicyness a bit. Customer service was lacking a bit as well, since it was our first time, it would have been nice if the cashier would have asked if we wanted to purchase any sauces or something, i didn't notice there were sauces available till after we devoured our sandwich. But the cashier looked like he was falling asleep while taking our order. The wait for the sandwich was also about 15-20 minutes. It appeared that other people before us were waiting even longer than that. I would need to give this sandwich another try with their house sauces to see if it's stole my heart from chic-fil-a or Popeyes. My friend on the other hand who is also a die hard fan of Popeyes and chic fil a said this sandwich stole her heart and she can't wait to return. But other than that, in my opinion was a pretty tasty sandwich. It was really fresh and tasted less processed. I would have to give this another try with their sauces. read more
Omg so I've had Roaming Rooster from their food truck and it was great but today I ordered from the actual restaurant through UberEATs & I am pleasantly surprised! I ordered the Nashville Hot chicken sandwich with bacon & extra pickles. It's was DELICIOUS! The fries were great too! Definitely worth trying if you haven't already! I hope they stay consistent because so far I LOVE this place! read more

I walked in to Roaming Rooster with high expectations from all the hype and let me just say that the hype is so real! Have you ever bit into a sandwich and find yourself with your eyes closed? Well that happened with this place! First of, I didn't wait in a crazy long line because I came right when they opened at 11 a.m. Choosing from the menu wasn't the hardest part for me because I knew exactly what to order prior to my visit. I'm not big on too much butter on my food but I made many exceptions for this heavenly sandwich. Honey Butter Chicken is the King of all chicken sandwiches! How can something so simple taste so good? Oh yeah it must be the oozing honey butter that fell through the cracks of every bite. The double pieces of chicken stacked was messy to eat but fun in a way. The combination of the sauce they use as spread, the melted honey butter, and fresh fried chicken was insanely delicious! I felt my arteries pumping through the meal but the grease fest was well worth it. Sorry Popeyes and Chick-fil-A but the award goes to Roaming Rooster for the best chicken sandwich I the DC area! read more

Decided to stop by for a chicken sandwich because I heard it was delicious. There was a line but not too bad. We (my friend & I) ordered the honey buttered fried chicken sandwich, the club, & some hand-cut fries. We asked for the sandwiches to be cut in half so we could share & that seemed to cause a slight issue but I'm not sure why. It's a kitchen. I'm sure there's some knives back there. Thankfully, the request was honored. It took about twenty minutes to get the order but it was worth the wait. The chicken is a buttermilk fried chicken breast, which tends to have a lighter crust than non-buttermilk fried chicken. Not light in color but light in weight. It's similar to how buttermilk pancakes are lighter than non-buttermilk pancakes if that makes sense. The chicken had a slight crunch on the outside, moist on the inside, well seasoned like it should be, & they don't skimp in the chicken. I tried the honey buttered chicken sandwich first. There was plenty honey butter, plenty cheese (2 slices of cheddar), & it was love a first bite. The sandwich was a little messy from the butter but that's what napkins are for. I've put honey on chicken before so I knew honey & butter together would be a winner. This honey butter was much lighter than others I've experienced. Definitely more butter than honey but the honey still shines through. Next I tried the club: chicken, lettuce, tomato, ranch dressing, & bacon. I like this sandwich too because it had bacon but not just any bacon; applewood smoked bacon, my favorite. Bacon makes everything better. Although these sandwiches are great on their own, I think they'd be better together. I want to combine them into one sandwich, the honey buttered club. That's what I'll order next time. Before I forget, they also have twice fried handcut fries. Deep down in my soul, I love handcut fries. It's a love affair that started when I was 6 & I used to make them with my mommy in the baby frydaddy. Remember those? Anyways, if you want a bomb chicken sandwich, this is the place for you. I found out later after I crushed my sandwich that the chicken is free range, vegetarian fed, non-antibiotic, & humanely raised. Bonus points. Til next time. read more

Today I went to Roaming Roosters. I ordered the Honey Butter Hot Chicken Sandwich as a pick up order. I placed the order at 12:25 and they said the order will be ready at 12:36. I pulled at 12:37 and my food there packed up and ready. I got back home and tore this food up I ain't lying lol. The fries are boardwalk style & the sandwich gives Popeyes a kick in the behind. read more
Let me start this review by stating that I am a diehard Chick-Fil-A Spicy Chicken sandwich girl and have not had any other chicken sandwich that comes close to being as good. Yes, I tried the Popeye's Chicken sandwich and I found it good, but not Chick-Fil-A good. Needless to say, I walked into Roaming Rooster because of all the hype but was not expecting much. Well, Roaming Rooster did not come to play with me! Baby, that sandwich was out of this world good. First of all they give you two huge pieces of chicken on the sandwich. Then the flavor is on point with just the right amount of heat. We ordered the Honey Butter Fried Chicken Sandwich and the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich. I preferred the Nashville Hot, because I LOVE spicy food. This sandwich was Chick-Fil-A good.....if not better! They made a believer out of me. We came here on a Friday night and the line was almost out of the door. We spent about an hour total to get our food, but it was worth the wait! It's not the nicest place, so we took our sandwiches to go and ate them in the car. Better for me because I would not want people to see the way I devoured that sandwich. It was a Sunday morning, the day my flight heads back to Detroit. I've had this place in my bookmarks and wanted to try it, but the 1-2 hour wait noted in the reviews for my food discourages me. As I was heading to Baltimore I thought let me get there before they open so I don't need to wait. Boy, was I wrong. 10:55 line of 20-25 people OUTSIDE THE RESTAURANT. I waited in the line which went by pretty quick but they can only cook so many sandwiches...from start to finish it took about 1 hour. The food was good but not good enough for me to wait again. I would have said it was amazing if the breading actually stayed on my chicken. The breading was not on my chicken at all. I tried the tenders and the sandwich, both of which the breading was falling off of. The flavor was very good and I can only imagine how nasty if the breading was on! I think maybe I had a bad batch or something because seeing all the photos the chicken looks fine! Also, for such a busy place they reaaaaaally need to turn up the A/C. I was dying in there and for an hour wait trust me it wasn't fun. read more

Wow, this place is solid. I came on a Saturday night, line double backed to the front of the store, but within 20mins I reached the cashier. Parking is a hassle but you may be able call in an order to get out faster. I got a nashville hot chicken combo which includes any side and a drink. I liked that I didn't have to have the usual fries with my combo...I got mac and cheese. Every part of the sandwich tastes fresh, and there were 2 chicken patties, which is apparently standard! I got it medium hot, it was spicy, but I don't necessarily think they make it spicier with sauce, but rather a couple of jalapeno slices. Breading was flavorful, but could have covered the patty better. Good crisp coleslaw, and I think hand cut thick pickles. Be warned the chicken is greasy, but at least the oil doesn't taste old. Mac and cheese is good, I don't like cheeses that are too sharp, because I feel like it ends up making it taste sour and salty...but this was creamy, and perfect, I'm not sure what kind they use. They have a system where they yell out your number which is given to you at the register...a screen that displays the number maybe helpful for people with hearing disabilities and generally getting people's attention. Staff is great, and communicative, solve issues quickly and usually in the customer's favor. They care less about being right than making their patrons happy. Cashiers handled the rush like bosses...They need a tip jar. read more

The fight of the chicken sandwiches between the franchises has allowed roaming rooster, the underdog, to leap frog and claim the trophy. It is a small black owned restaurant. Food: They have a well seasoned and breaded chicken fried well. The taste! The taste! The taste! Roaming roosters allows each customer to select their heat level for the seasoning of the chicken. My go to sandwich is the Nashville chicken with medium heat. Price point: An entree is under $10. The restaurant serves cage free chicken that is well cooked. The customer gets a great value for their money. Service: Depending on the day of the week service could be backlogged. The restaurants serves the best fried chicken in town so it is to be expected that there is a long line. The customer service is great, team members try to keep a smile on and are courteous. Cleanliness: the restaurant maintained its cleanliness even during busy times. I haven't been to the bathroom to comment about the cleanliness. read more

Three words. Believe. The. Hype. The chicken is juicy and the batter was so flavorful. The addition of the coleslaw is very unique. Soooo good and worth the long line! I'm definitely trying the waffles and chicken next time. read more
