    Cold cut sandwich from Carls
    Tori G.

One of my go to sandwich places for a cold cut. Been in dc since the late 80s. Make sure you bring cash!

This use to be one of the best sandwich spots in the city. Now, not so much. The meat they are using is processed meat. Not like pre-COVID, when the meat was not processed. The sandwich was very light and not a lot of meat either. I assume its because they are trying to keep the cost down. However, the taste was good and the staff is very friendly.

DC staple food spot. I got the turkey provolone with lettuce mayo and oil. Taste perfect. Place was clean. The owner Carl was pleasant as always. It's a cash only spot. Thoroughly enjoyed my sandwich.

Me and the owner Carl, himself.

I have been eating Carl's Subbs for almost 3 decades. My husband and his father have been eating them a lot longer. Carl knows my family by name. He treats his customers like family. This man works in his own shop. He greets his customers with a smile, a joke, by their names, and the food is always made to order. This is a small shop and therefore you'll be in and out of there in no time. I cannot ever remember a time that Carl has ever messed up my sandwich. He always gets it right. He's a humble person and the community loves and adores him. Carl's Subbs is a CASH ONLY business. Please do not go into this establishment with a debit / credit card or Google / Apple Pay thinking you're going to change the way Carl has been doing business his entire life. Stop by the ATM, grab some cash, and be ready to pay for your order. Most subbs run about $10 bucks each. So multiply that by how many people you are buying subbs for and get your money out of the ATM accordingly. Thank you! Lastly, Carl's has merch now!! He has a nonprofit called EGOS and all merchandise proceeds go towards educational purposes. These items can be purchased with cash as well. I purchased the Tupac T-shirt today for $20 bucks. Pac said, "All Eyes On Me." I love Carl's. I would suggest you swing through for a bite. Carl's closes promptly at 5:00 pm. He doesn't take anymore calls for orders after 4:30 pm and he locks the doors precisely at 4:45 pm. If you're not inside the door by 4:44 pm, you're SOL (Short On Luck or S**t Out of Luck) because you'll miss that sammich tuh-day. You already know Carl's Subbs is a 5 Stars.

Carl is the nicest guy you'll ever meet. Not even in a customer service way, he just radiates positive energy and is happy to be serving you good food. On that note, his subs are spectacular. They're so good that I would still give this place 5 stars even if Carl had slapped me in the face when I walked in. 6 stars for Subbs by Carl! Just make sure you bring cash, they don't have a card reader.

A very good deli sandwich shop in NE Washington DC on Rhode Island Avenue. This place isn't glamorous on the inside, by any means, however the sandwiches are very delicious and filling. This sandwich shop has an old-DC, urban sandwich shop vibe. Concrete slab floors, old refrigerators housing classic DC soft drinks, and a chips rack that showcases all of the old school DC chips such as Bon Ton bbq corn chips, Utz, Martins, etc.. I've been a customer of Carl's for years and it is so noteworthy how consistent the quality of his subs are. These subs are relatively larger than subs you might get at sandwich shops in DC. The meat is sliced to order. One thing of note is the meat here is thick-cut. I've never asked whether the meat can be cut thinner, so if that is something you are interested in it might be worth asking Carl or whoever takes your order. Carl is the older, shorter gentleman at the register who normally takes orders. You'll know it's him because he is the only employee who actively engages all customers. Carl is very straight-forward and speaks with wisdom. What I love about Carl is he is very friendly and engages people, naturally, with genuine concern and respect. This place doesn't have any handheld menus as the sandwich options are taped to the top of the wall to the right of the lobby upon entering the shop. My go-to is always the pastrami with everything, including hots (hot cherry pepper relish). Overall a very good experience. Give them a try.

They don't have typical bacon or sausage because "the owners don't eat pork" which really sounds like something more appropriate for their house, and not their restaurant business on Rhode island ave. The "chicken sausage" was a shriveled up piece of chicken paste that they cooked in the microwave. I ordered scrambled eggs, and when they came out, they had that crust that scrambled eggs get when they sit out after being cooked. The grits were lumpy and outside of the cheese sauce they put on the top - had no flavor. The French toast tasted like milk eggs and burnt grill. And the pancakes, were very obviously pre made and microwaved. Additionally - the meal I ordered is listed to come with a bread, eggs, a side and a meat. I asked for bacon, and was told the owners don't eat pork. I asked for the chicken sausage.. 5 minutes later the server asked me if I wanted the sausage spicy or not. Then when she brought the bill, there was a $4 up charge for spicy sausage that she neither told me, nor was it on the menu. And to make matters worse - the sausages were not spicy and were actually just flat out nasty. This is a SAD excuse for a restaurant. I'm sad that I spent calories walking there and dollars eating there.

They recommend everything of course. I ordered 2 Whiting platters and one Old Bay wings platter. I waited outside as there isn't much seating on the inside. About 20 minutes go by and my food was ready. I raced home to eat. The food was good. The whiting was fried and seasoned perfectly. I could have asked for better fish. The greens were delicious. Soft, seasoned and southern. The yams could have been better. They tasted as though they were warmed up and I got the bottom/corner of the pan. My wife had the other whiting platter. She too enjoyed the fish. She had a side of Mac and cheese and rice with vegetables. The rice was good. The Mac and cheese is ok. She was not a fan of velveeta cheese for Mac and cheese and I wasn't either when I tasted mine with the wings below. Lastly I ordererd old bay wings with a side of Mac and cheese and potato salad. The potato salad was far to dry. It was definitely missing something. The wings were seasoned with the right amount of old bay but have tasted a little stale. Overall I had a good experience. I know what I like and what I may not like from here going forward. The whiting is great along with the Mac and cheese. I love a good fish platter. Next time I'll go earlier in the day for sure.

I looked it up on Uber Eats to see what they sold and was excited because I had been craving soul food. The inside was small but nice. They had plenty of seating if you wanted to eat inside. I ordered a #26 on the seafood menu which was a platter that included Shrimp, Oysters, and Whiting. It also included two sides, I chose Mac n cheese and collard greens. This was a 3/5. I will never order the Mac again, the greens were good, the shrimp were the ones you throw in the fryer, oysters were decent, and the fish was seasoned well. I would've preferred fresh shrimp but these were ok. I will asks that the fresh be fried harder but again, that's a preference. Cocktail sauce was really good. Note: I was told that none of the sides included pork. Not really sure and it's explained below. My daughter ordered a turkey cold cut sub w/ fries. I noticed that the price rang up for different than what was on the menu. She told me I was mixing up items. I was told that the turkey and cheese sandwich was different from the turkey sub. To ensure that I understood what she was saying I asked more questions. She told me that the sub included lettuce, tomatoes, and onions, and the sandwich did not. I thanked her for her explanation and explained my reason for asking was because on the menu the turkey cold cut came with ham and we do not eat pork. She said that was fine and the turkey sub could be made without the ham. However, when we got home the sandwich in fact had ham on it . The meal costs a little over $20, which wasn't the biggest issue. My biggest issue was that I had explained that we did not eat pork and we had a whole conversation about the sandwich for it to still be made wrong. This was a waste of money because my daughter could not eat the sandwich. I called and they said that I could come back and get another sandwich . I explained to her that we live on the other side of town and that it wasn't easy for us to just return and get another sandwich. She asked what they could do and I said that's what I would like to figure out. We were told that the next time that we came that my daughter would be compensated for her meal with another meal and that this young lady would remember us. My daughter has another appointment early next month and we shall see. I cannot rate this order but my daughter said she will never order another sub from here. Overall, I was not pleased with my experience with this be if my first time but I'm willing to give them another shot.
