Rivera's is our favorite Mexican restaurant in Long Beach. The food is fantastic, and they make great Menudo and Pasole daily. We start all of our meals with the homemade menudo. As you can see from the pictures below my husband's bowl was empty. This was the second time he tried menudo and Rivers's is his favorite. The staff is friendly and George, the owners son is wonderful. We love to sit at the heart table ( that's what they call it) where we sit side by side and enjoy our meal. Our favorite is the # 10 carnitas with beans and rice. The carnitas are absolutely delicious!The margaritas on the rocks are great! Every time we come to Long Beach we make it a point to have dinner at Riveras's. It's a hidden gem in Long Beach and well worth it. It's not fancy, it's homey and the food is delicious! After seeing so many great posts on Facebook, I decided to have lunch today at Rivera's, and man, was it good. For an appetizer, I ordered the guacamole, and it was on point. It was so good that I ordered an extra side of guac to go along with the scoop on the burrito. For the entree, I got the Chile Colorado Burrito (wet). It had a good kick of spice, but the guacamole helped. My server, Jorge, was super friendly and helpful when deciding what to order. Overall, I would rate this place a 10/10, and I will be going back. read more

I heard about Rivera's on a local FB food page. Several people raved about it so I added to my list of "new places to try" a while back. My family was out for the night so I decided to call in a take-out order to enjoy at home by myself. The man taking my order over the phone was friendly. When I try new Mexican restaurants I usually have my "go to" item(s). Those would be, well, a crunchy taco (shredded beef or chicken) a cheese enchilada and/or a bean and cheese burrito (or perhaps big combo burrito - usually wet). Tonight I decided on all three. HA! The enchilada was such cheesy deliciousness. Yes, I realize I ordered a CHEESE enchilada but sometimes it isn't super cheesy or they skimp on the cheese on top. I didn't like the sauce better than my *favorite* enchilada sauce from a different Mexican restaurant but it was good. The crunchy beef taco was great! I really enjoyed that. The bean and cheese burrito was huge! I also enjoy that very much. Tasty beans and lots of yummy melted cheese. I only had a couple bites of that as I got full from the taco and enchilada. So I have a second meal waiting for me tomorrow. :) I am looking forward to going back and trying other items on the menu. read more

Went here to meet my brother for dinner while in the area due to the high yelp ratings. I really wanted to like this place especially because everyone that worked there were super nice and provided excellent service. Sadly the food was a bit of a let down. I love a good chili colorado and this is their specialty so ordered it. It came in a bowl and consisted of small strips of beef in the sauce. While it tasted good, the serving size was lacking and the sauce was too greasy. I've had chili colorado in the past where it was larger chunks of tender beef with sauce over which I would have preferred. Additionally, the beans were gummy and the rice had too strong a garlic flavor for my tastes. Lastly, they close at 7pm but they say you don't have to rush and leave at 7pm but I felt rushed because they cleaned off our table and started mopping the floors etc. I hadn't seen my brother in many months so I felt our visit was cut short. The service(George) was AMAZING!!! Food came in huge portions. My big backed boyfriend and I couldn't even finish the two plates we shared got together. Great prices too for the portions. The restaurant is one of a kind too. Its so cute on the inside. So much history and beautiful pictures and memorabilia. Finally found a place where there wasn't any tomato in the guac. Rivera's is a special family owned restaurant that I can't believe it's taken us 5 years living in Long Beach to discover! The ambiance is cozy and whimsical. Our waiter was incredibly friendly and helpful. He shared that his mom and dad were cooking the food in the kitchen and he and his wife worked in the front. He gave us suggestions and we enjoyed every bite! We tried the Pozole, Albondigas, and chile Relleno/enchilada combination plate. Everything had a rich depth of flavor. The Chile Relleno wasn't overly breaded and had the right amount of cheese filling. The enchiladas were cooked perfectly, with plenty of meat and cheese. The menudo noticed it was made with lots of love clean and tripe cut into small pieces and full of flavor Glad I found my new spot for menudo since moving to Orange County from LA. I was waited on by the owner's son very sweet welcoming mention his mother makes the menudo pretty close to how my mother use to make it. Some nice background music playing. The one thing I'm really sad about is that we had taken so long to try this place! It is literally an 8 min walk from us for the last 8 years and we just tried it yesterday. We had to order out because our baby fell asleep and they were just about to close. We had a shredded beef wet burrito, pozole, and chicken enchiladas. Everything was SO good! And I've had a lot of home made Mexican food and feel like this is the best pozole I have ever had. The meat was so tender and so much flavor! And there were barely any bones in the soup. For me ordering shredded beef other places is always a hit or miss because there are always some parts that will be tough. Not this burrito, I didn't even need a knife to cut through it. I love Mexican food. It is my absolute favorite and when I can find an authentic Mexican restaurant I'm definitely popping up. Riveras is located on the East side of Long Beach. Now, I'd admit I don't come down this way often. But after trying Rivera's I must make an effort to support more local restaurants. Rivera's didn't disappoint at all. I read thru several reviews before coming and I was convinced I would have a great food experience. Upon arrival, parking is a mess. But that's downtown Long Beach for you. Thankfully, I was able to find a great park on one of the side streets. I came in on a Wednesday evening. The place wasn't packed and I was able to be seated within 10 minutes. The restaurant is small. They have a separate take out side, which I appreciated for any future visits. The staff were extremely friendly. I loved the fact the waiter remembered my name. That little detail made me feel welcomed and appreciated. Once seated I was giving chips and salsa. The chips were still fresh and warm. Loved that! I ordered guacamole, two chicken enchiladas and a hard shell shredded beef taco. My food came quick. It was hot and smelled amazing. The enchiladas were so delicious. The rice and beans were far from basic. I felt as if someone's abuela or abuelo was back there making things happen in the kitchen. Everything felt personal. The portions were large. They were stingy with any of the food. I had so much I was able to take a full plate home. I truly enjoyed my meal and the service. This is now one of my go to Mexican spots. Thank you Yelp for populating this spot in Long Beach after I searched "menudo." It's easy to miss this restaurant if you're not paying attention as it's on the corner of a residential looking neighborhood. I found parking in the block of the restaurant's corner. There is some outside sitting available, but this eatery appears more of a casual order and go place. I was very impressed with the menudo; initially it wasn't what I was expecting. Their broth is slightly tart and less salty compared to other broths I've had. The best part is seeing the little spices, onion, and herbs in the broth. $14 for the soup, cokes with corn or flour tortillas. The place has daily specials and a full food menu. If you enjoy authentic Mexican food then you should come here. I substituted the potatoes for their sautéed vegetables and they were extremely delicious. I asked if they made their own tortillas and they said they don't but they bring him from someone that actually does make tortillas so that was a plus. The Latina music is very friendly. The food is absolutely amazing and George Sr prepares it all. I don't eat spicy food so they usually always an alternative. For instance I don't do salsa so I get pico de gallo which is NOT prepared with jalapeños. I've been coming to this location for more than 20 years and it never disappoints. Family owned and operated and they know their business and food quite well. Always courteous and they don't skimp. This is always my go to when I'm in Long Beach. read more
