River Crab is a lovely setting and popular. The food from my experience is average. I recenly dined and had salmon with a mango salsa. While the salmon was prepared well as expected it was topped with a teaspoon of mostly unripe mango, it was disappointing. The whipped potatoes that accompanied it were just as described, whipped to the texture of hummus (i question if they might have been instant). Had a 6:00 reservation, showed up at 6:00. Were told it would be :15-:30 minute wait due to COVID protocol and how they seat, even though we had a reservation. That makes no sense. You take reservations based on the Protocol and the resultant reduced capacity. It's 7 months into the pandemic and you still can't get it right? Also saw the manager speaking with two people at the hostess stand who didn't have masks on, and they walked to their table without masks on. Oh, and the bartenders mask was around his chin. Was really excited to eat at this restaurant tonight... Made reservations two months ago as I'm staying at the Bluewater inn tonight. Walked in this afternoon just to get a drink and sit outside by the water... Have never been treated so rudely by anyone ever. Not only did they not want to seat me they told me to go get my own drink and take it outside by myself. And when I called to cancel my reservations it was very apparent they didn't care. This is by far the best restaurant in St Clair with an added bonus of being right on the river. You can enjoy the view whether you inside or outside. Last time we came we sat outside. Our table was at the edge of the deck right next to the water. There are not too many places folks you can find that in Southeast Michigan. Let's move on to the food. If you come here you can go wrong if your order fish. You have to try the fish. It is always fresh and cooked various ways depending on the choice. You will not be disappointed. If you do not like fish then you will find plenty of other choices on the menu including some nice steaks. Most of the food was beyond delicious! I would highly recommend the dynamite shrimp for appetizers as the flavor and crunch just blew me away! Definitely makes it to the top of my list for one the best shrimp I've had. They first start you off with complementary bread which is soft and good and crackers that taste just like everything bagels. They give you butter and smoked salmon with the bread and crackers. Good stuff :) From the lunch entrees, what I've had is the plank salmon, island fish tacos, and shrimp artichoke pasta. Out of those, I would first recommend the island fish tacos. They tasted fresh and truly like an island food with avacados and unripe mango pieces inside. I highly highly recommend them!! The plank salmon was second best of those 3. It depends on your taste however, as the fish had a slight sweet taste which I didn't mind really but wasn't crazy about. What I did like is the slight smoked taste it had because of being grilled on a plank which they serve the salmon to you on. Next, I wouldn't actually recommend the shrimp artichoke pasta as it wasn't nearly as flavorful as the other dishes. Still not bad but lacked that "wow" factor. It was simply ok. Aside from the food, the ambiance is amazing! My friends & I sat outside right next to the water and it was just beautiful! Also, while our waitress was nice, she wasn't as attentive and we had to wait quite a while for her each time (the bill, ordering food, etc) so we stayed at the restaurant much longer than we wanted to since we wanted to explore Port Huron. The food also took quite a while to come out. Also, when we asked for more bread, out waitress forgot so we never got that either. The restaurant wasn't crazy busy so don't know what happened there. Overall good experience and I would certainly come back for the beautiful views and for the dishes I truly enjoyed. read more

We celebrated our anniversary here. We had made a reservation 15 days in advance for a table by the window since it was our anniversary. Unfortunately the restaurant did not read our reservation request. Very disappointed in the hostess. She did not acknowledge our anniversary nor did she let the waitress know it was our anniversary. She told us we could not get a table by the window, as we had requested 15 days prior. Very disappointed! We asked our waitress at the end if she was told we were celebrating an anniversary. Had an amazing experience here for a Christmas Eve dinner. What a pleasant surprise that they were open! It was all nicely decorated and there was a guy playing the piano when we were there. The service was outstandingly attentive! We love our server Alan. All the food meets my expectation and some of it was so so good! My favorites are: 1. The warm rolls that you get for free before the meal! 2. Lobster bisque: really nice flavor with a decent portion of lobster on top 3. Dynamite scallops!!!! Really fresh scallops with very flavorful creamy sauce on top. Similar to some baked mussels that I've had in Japanese restaurants. But I like the scallop twist! I even love the seaweed underneath in the sauce in the scallops. A must have and I will definitely be coming back for more. 4. The Brussels sprouts with squash puree. Properly roasted Brussels sprouts(even though the oil/butter probably really helped) with natural smooth creaminess of the squash. Couldn't have been more perfect! I just called to make a reservation for the first weekend in July 2023 for the River Crab Sunday Brunch, and they said they haven't done the brunch since Covid and no plans to start it again. Very sad news, as this was, bar none, the best brunch I have ever had!! I always looked forward to special occasions or company coming to town to give Mom & Dad a reason to go to the River Crab's brunch as I was growing up in St. Clair. We come out here periodically for brunch with my parents and solo for an overnight stay or two. The trick is to arrive when they open for brunch for the freshest and best food, easy trick when you are staying there. We also like to sit on the covered patio area and enjoy the view. I love the lox here, cured in dill, served with egg, red onion and capers. It has the bagels and cream cheese that make it a top notch choice for breakfast. I also love it when they have the smoked bluefish, oh so tasty. They often have cold mussels with jalapenos and cold crab legs which my dad loves. He asks for cracking devices and warmed butter and has a blast. I love the endless bacon and the hot mussels, especially when they are in casino or a dijon cream sauce. My husband loves the made to order omelets and the sausage. The regular food is hit or miss on the buffet in my opinion. We all really like the fresh made waffles with fruit and whipped cream to jazz them up. The dessert bar is happy with trifle, various pastries and made to order bananas foster which is yummy. The hotel is hit or miss based on which room you get, we have several that we quite like a lot. It is older yes and a bit run down in some rooms but overall it's very clean and not at all unpleasant. Seriously there is not much to pick from that is better around here, most of it is far worse, trust me on this. They give you a continental breakfast that is pleasant enough too. I like the views of the water and hopping downstairs for happy fun happy hour they run from 3pm until 7 pm weekdays. Five buck specialty martinis and cocktails, four dollar wines, 3.25 premium drafts and 2.50 for domestics and well drinks, cheap and happy. Drinks are very healthy and not skimped on at all. They also have a list of fun appetizers that run between three and five smackeroos. Dinner and lunch in here is very good. I adore their freebie salmon pate and usually end up taking some home. Fish is fresh and you can have it done a variety of ways with various sauces and accoutrements. I like the snapper hemingway and the macadamia encrusted mahi mahi but I usually get a special. Waitstaff is wonderful and often will give good advice on what is best or really popular with other guests. All in all I like it. It is not glam but it is fun, has nice views and I find it a pleasant experience every time. read more

After the recommendations from the staff at the Hampton Inn, local hospital clients, and a fellow Yelper, I tried the River Crab with 3 business colleagues. Good call. The hotel made our reservations for us, and we had a table waiting for us overlooking the river. It was a beautiful evening (we could have actually been outside), and the river was beautiful. The 'Hampton connection' gave us a free appetizer, which was calamari with some sort of spicy (ish) sauce, which was AMAZING. Might have been the most tender calamari that I've ever had. Very well done. A fairly expansive wine menu (although I don't drink), and very good bread, including jalapeño cheddar biscuits. Quite good, and right up my alley! The waitress was very accommodating, and the menus (which I though was hilarious, especially since I might not have been dressed to the level of this) had "Welcome to the ######### Party" printed across the top, and the table even had a VIP card on it. Yes, it was like entourage or something (without all the craziness). But seriously, it was a nice touch, and they apparently do similar things for birthdays, anniversaries, etc. It's nice. So, the food. I had blackened lake whitefish, with the 'Charley' topping at the recommendation of the waitress, which was sautéed mussels, mushrooms, and scallops. It was terrific. Truly. I didn't have room for dessert, although the offerings sounded QUITE good. I wish my wife had been with me for this dessert menu (well, I wish she was with me most of the time, but a dude has to work!). All in all, this was really well done - nice setting, great service, and all of our food was quite good. I will definitely come back if I'm ever in the area. read more

What a gem!! I have driven past this place hundreds of times - we finally decided to try it and I'm wondering WHY we waited so long. Everything was superb. We ordered the Apple Jack sea bass and the Cajun chicken tortellini. Hands down, this was the best tortellini dish I've eaten. The sauce was perfection - so much flavor and very rich. The sea bass was top notch. Also ordered a Caesar salad - was expecting a small side salad - but no, it was a full-on full sized salad. First impressions were not good. The parking lot is very steep and very crowded. There is an overflow lot across the street but then you're stuck walking through the steep parking lot to the restaurant. We had reservations but people in front of us had the later reservation and got seated first. So when we got to the hostess stand it took them a minute to determine our seat. After being seated, it was 5 minutes before we got water. After 10 minutes, we hadn't seen our server. I let another staff member know who was kind enough to bring us some bread. The reason the hostess was delayed because a huge group by us was checking out and had individual bills. The restaurant needs to change there policy and not allow that. The server admitted it took over 15 minutes and apologized but it was't her fault. Once our server came, she did a great job. The food and drink came out efficiently, and she was good about refilling water glasses. The food - a bit more costly but filling portions and a good bang for your buck. I had the Martha's Vineyard salad and shrimp scampi pasta. My husband had the seafood trio. We both really liked everything we had. read more

Ok, so this place is a mixed review for me. I was leaning towards a 4 but the service from my waitress brought it down a notch. When I called to make reservations, they asked if we were celebrating anything, and I let them know our anniversary. They mentioned some sort of special menu, which we never saw. Then the server, who seemed like she didn't want to be there, we had to ask for water refills, twice. Our bread ran out while we were waiting for our food, and she never asked about bringing any more, which would have been helpful for our daughter. And then she brought the bill with the dessert. We barely touched the dessert, carrot cake, because we thought it didn't taste right. My wife and I barely have chances to go to nice restaurants because of our schedules, so I don't like sending anything back or being negative while we are out on a date together. Service was decent but most of the food is way overpriced. $78 for a pound of King Crab legs you'd think they'd actually give you a pound. They gave me one small leg. There was maybe 4 ounces of meat. My husband's meal was also a very small portion of fish. The scallop app was also pricey and they gave us 5 small scallops. My kids got surf and turf which actually looked decent. The lobster tail was pretty big. All the food tasted fine but I felt ripped off when I left as far as the price versus quality and quantity. We don't mind spending $550 on a nice meal for our family but next time we'll just go to Paul's Chop House or Capital Grill. read more

I was there last Saturday with my girlfriends for lunch and I was very disappointed. This place is a favorite of mine and my whole family so we have been going there on a regular basis for more than 30 years and have always loved it. This last visit, it took 45 minutes for our appetizer to come out. One of us ordered a menu item (seafood roll) and was told more that 20 minutes after ordering, that the did not have it. How do you run out of something when you haven't even been open an hour yet? We all 3 ended up ordering fish & chips. It was not good at all. The fish tasted like it was either freeze dried or just not very fresh. And there was such. Small portion of fries! We also waited about 40 minutes after ordering to get our food. I see that the prices have also increased quite a bit. I can understand this when you consider inflation and restaurants needing to charge more. But where's the quality we are used to getting at the River Crab? Lastly, we all ordered mock tails which were $5.50 each. They wanted to charge us 2.50 for a refill.....are you kidding me?! It's basically an iced tea with flavorings added. At $5.50 a pop, they could at least include free refills. The only real 'plus' of the experience is sitting outside with the beautiful view of the river. Sure hope they can get it together soon. read more
