a plate of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, peas, and a drink

Second timers and it was just as charming. From the tiny paper menu to the 4 entrees with all the trimmings, this place is adorable. I ordered the fried chicken and they did North Carolina proud. Crispy, juicy and tender. Just perfect really. My hubby and I ate a true southern supper for under $20. AWESOME! Can't wait til our next trip thru Mt. Olive! And the service? Southern hospitality all the way. A gem!

    a menu for the restaurant

I came here for lunch today. Its a nice sit down southern style restaurant that has the look and feel of being here awhile. They only take cash or local checks, no credit or debit cards. The staff is short in talking but courteous and friendly overall. The food also came out pretty timely from ordering. They have different menus every day that the post on their Facebook page, some sort meat accompanied by two sides. Two pieces of BBQ chicken with portions of string beans, apples and banana pudding would run you $8. I wish the portion was bigger and I hesitate to give it 5 stars as a result, but would give the place a solid 4.5. Facebook Page- www.facebook.com/Ritas-Place-362844990579551/

Food was excellent. Southern all the way. Couldn't ask for better unless my grandmother had made it herself.

The bartender informed us that that was an OK place to park. They opened right at one, and we were the first people in there. We inquired about food since we had not eaten lunch yet, but they were unable to let us know if their kitchen was going to open that day or not. They just started a food truck a few days prior, but that was not going to be there that day. We ordered flights and sat at the end of a really cool looking bar. I was really impressed with the fact that I liked three out of four of my beer choices. I got a stout, a blueberry cider, a prickly pear cider, and a pickle beer. Because of course we're in Mount Olive for the pickles! LOL. They will add a pickle per request! Also had sips of my besties Shake it off, the strawberry milkshake, IPA. I have never had an IPA that I liked before. We wanted to get some of the stout to go, but there was not any in the cooler. We asked Dominic, the bartender and he actually went out back to look for us. He was unable to find them, but had four behind the bar that he sold to us. We were able to add two of the shake it off to make a six pack. That was $16. Overall a great experience. The inside of the bar was lovely. The bartender was friendly and helpful. And best of all was the excellent beer. I wish this bar wasn't so far...I would definitely become a regular here!

But we also got some of their other beers and were happy with them as well. The servers were very friendly and attentive, and location is great. Good stop for sure!

You walk in and the young HS or College Busboys/waiters are lined up waiting to assist. It has to be one of the most nostalgic things gs I've seen in a long time. The sweet tea is southern pucker sweet & perfect!! There's malt vinegar on the table for collards, and the NC vinegar based BBQ sauce was very good. However, the chopped pork BBQ did t really need any help, it was just as good on its own and not mushy. I even enjoyed the yellow coleslaw, it's a mustard & vinegar base and tasty. The Brunswick stew could have been heat hotter, but it had a decent taste with plenty of meat & veggies. I would definitely drive out of my way again to share Parker's with my 15yr old who missed this road trip.

Crowded at lunch time but we quickly got a table. The crowd was diverse, tending to be a bit older. 2.Pitcher of tea delivered quickly and left on table. 3 The food: chopped barbecue served eastern NC style. Very good with lots of vinegar to add on the table; epic corn sticks and slightly sweetened hush puppies for the table; green beans served southern style just like grandma made them; mustard Cole slaw, a bit too sweet but yummy and Mac and cheese. We inhaled it. 4. Great prices ; $10 for a plate. 5. And key to a great bbq restaurant: the ribbons of the champion hogs they, ah, bought for dinner. Not oversized portions, which is great. Clean and a great small town stop.

There was a very real risk of wasting an entire day. Thankfully, Skylight Inn delivered in a big way. First, this is the kind of place that attracts everyone: police officers, construction workers, families, businesspeople in suits, and that's just on a weekday. That's always a good sign and something I love to see. Their whole hog Eastern North Carolina barbecue was absolutely worth the effort. It was incredibly flavorful and packed with texture. The crispy skin is expertly mixed throughout the meat, alongside moist pork and just enough rendered fat to create a perfect balance. Every bite had something different going on. The sweet tea was excellent, the slaw was solid, and the picnic-style potato salad hit the spot. The cornbread, however, deserves special mention. Unlike what most people think of as cornbread today, Skylight's version is made with only stone-ground cornmeal, water, salt, and pork drippings. It's dense, chewy, and rustic. No wheat flour, no sugar, and no fluffy crumb. It may not be everyone's favorite, but it's a fascinating piece of barbecue history, and I respect that they're still making it the traditional way. I came. I saw. I ate. Then I bought three pounds to go and grabbed a T-shirt on my way out. That's about as strong an endorsement as I can give. PS.....Walking the grounds is fun as well.

I'm a big Cole slaw fan and this was very finely shopped up slaw with amazing flavor. They leave the crispy skin in the pork to give you these little yummy surprises as you eat. Plenty of room in the dinning area and a covered outdoor picnic table area.
