    Lentil tacos with posole
    Christine C.

Richard's Mexican Restaurant did not disappoint yesterday. We were seated and greeted by the owner. She was such a sweet lady. I ordered the lentil tacos with posole and my husband ordered the breakfast akilled with chorizo and egg over medium. The salsa had such a good flavor. The chile was not spicy but had an overall nice flavor. We were excited we got two sopapillas each. They were hot and delicious and were a great finish to the meal. Our server was excellent and made sure our ice tea was never empty. We will make sure to not let our visit such a long absence the next time.

This was a quick stop just to try their sopapillas so the review is just for that. The sopapillas we got had a pretty good flavor (they said made from a mix here) but were not made fresh to order and the texture was a little gummy-- not crisp even though they were fried golden, That's all we got to try but I understand they have good vegan and vegetarian options with lentils, rice, beans and chiles and don't use lard which I appreciate.

My husband and I wanted to try something different than our normal go-to restaurants, so we decided to try Richard's. When we got there it wasn't too packed, but you could tell they definitely have their regulars, as they seemed to be very friendly and know the people that frequent their establishment. The restaurant was clean and bright and the staff was friendly and helpful. I ordered a breakfast burrito with chorizo and my husband had a breakfast skillet. We both got the chile on the side (acid reflux issues). We also decided to share some French toast. We were given delicious complimentary salsa while we waited. It had a good heat to it. Our food came out fairly quickly. It was hot and delicious. My breakfast burrito had a lot of cheese which made it amazing! though the red chile was hot, we loved it and my husband almost finished his! All around, we will be back

A very yummy plate that was.

One of the Best New Mexican Cuisines in Albuquerque. The food is fresh, hot and tasty. Go by, you will not regret it and you will walk out well satisfied. Yummy

I got to go here for lunch one time and very much enjoyed my vegetarian meal with its combination of foods and flavors and veggies. It's a good lunch place for vegans too. Not typical new Mexican food, as it has different ingredients and flavoring than typical here. I believe there were lentils! My one disappointment is I haven't been able to go since because the hours are so limited and early.

Friendly staff, tasty food. Had two chicken burritos and the Papitas (roasted potatoes). Had to have dry to take on the road, would have loved to have them wet. Providing updated menu images. Stopped in while charging an EV at Walmart.

Chicken enchiladas, 'Christmas ', beans on the left, fideo on the right

With our 10 days of fall over, winter settled in last night with our second freeze of the year. I was chilled all morning and decided that I needed to get warm... Richard's serves real, actual fideo which is something like a Mexican spaghetti. But better. Great salsa served with store bought chips (my only complaint as I like real deal tortilla chips) and the chicken enchiladas with both red and green. The chicken is seasoned well and the chile is the perfect range of not too hot. Never disappoints

Shredded beef taco, Christmas flat cheese enchilada plate, queso enchiladas, he devoured them! And the so yummy fideo!

The food was really good, if you're a fan of Fideo (Vermicelli, Mexican style) you will really like this place! We had the flat cheese enchiladas with fideo and the queso enchiladas...didn't disappoint! Free chips and salsa. Also they have a small patio with a few tables, patios are important these days! Friendly staff!

Chili rellleno, chicken soft taco, homemade beans and brown rice with lentils. THAT is nutrition + taste on a plate!

I stood on line to order for maybe 10 minutes or so. I had the Carne Adovada Burrito, one soft Beef Taco, and rice and beans. Everything was excellent and tasted delicious. The price was very reasonable. I wish we had a restaurant like this on Long Island.

Directly across the street from University of New Mexico's main entrance, this place is packed when school is in session. This place is huge, but not at first glance. Walk into the retro-looking, Western themed dining room, and you'll see a huge menu board above the order counter. There is are several freestyle soda machines in the middle of the room. There are little digital screens in the corner where you watch for your order number and a counter in the corner where you go pick up your food. It's not until you go into the next room that you discover there is another "next room," and then another. There is a lot of art on the walls, including several John Wayne pictures. The girl at the counter who took our order was an absolute ray of sunshine--so friendly and sweet. We ordered the green chili cheeseburger with onion rings and the daily special which is the "green pile-up" (beans, hash browns, scrambled egg, and green chili beef). The good came our talented quickly, and was quite yummy. Frontier is an Albuquerque classic. If it old? Yes, but it has a huge faithful following, not including the things of UNM students that pack this giant diner during the school year. It may not be a "must try" for some, but if you want Albuquerque nostalgia, this is your place. Btw--it's pretty darn cheap,!

My parents lived in ABQ for years and always thought that the atmosphere was great, but the food was so-so. However, on this instance, we all thought the food was quite good. Flavorful carne adovada, although it was a bit tough. Red chile sauce was spicy but had great flavor. The green chile sauce was hot and tasty. Posole was also good. The gold margaritas were also good - to anyone complaining about the price - at $14.50, the price is very fair considering the cost of ingredients. If you want a cheap junk margarita that is more sugar than anything else, go somewhere else! Our gripe... The place is huge and has an abundance of great places to seat guests. We had a pretty large group - 7 people celebrating a family reunion of sorts. However, they sat us right next to the bussing station that had noisy carts, dishwashers, and other distractions. It was so loud, it was hard to hear the person across the table. There were at least 10 other tables that they could have seated us at! It seems to me that this area should be used only when the restaurant is completely full. This seems to be a poor management decision rather than the fault of the servers or hosts.

Next, the entry door is no longer facing the street. It is on the north wall of the building off the entry to the parking lot. The entrance sign is just sharpie or pen on paper and very faded. Once inside this small converted residence there are two dining rooms. The first was full but there was open seating in the second. There isn't a lot on the walls so the room echoes your conversation to everyone in the room. A bit more art on the walls and the diner vibe would really make itself known. The food. The NYT recently put Mary and Tito's in their 41 best list in the US so I had very high expectations. Usually my wife and I order a single item and share the meal. This time we ordered knowing we'd have take home leftovers. I ordered the Mexican Turnover Combination with beef. This is a pastry crust folded over a combination of ground beef, rice and beans. I ordered the red chile with this. My wife ordered the cheese enchiladas with green chile, rice and beans. This came with a lot of chopped green chile, not a sauce. Overall it was ok, but the beans and chopped chile put down so much liquid it rapidly became a soggy texture less mess. My turnover was tasty and the red chile also ok but not up to the rave reviews I've heard. At this time, I'd rate it the third best red I've had in NM. (See my review for La Cocina in Espanola for my pick for best Red chile in NM- so far anyway ) Overall, I'm glad we finally got the opportunity to dine at this local institution. When we do give it another try, I'm going to follow the recommendation for chicarones and pork adovado. Actual rating 3.5 stars.
