Good morning on this Thanksgiving Eve (is that a real event?) from Central New Mexico. Our outing today is to one of our favorite long-established local establishments that has at least one item on the menu that is not always seen: Fideo or Mexican Spaghetti. We really like this excellent food, the efficient service, the retro atmosphere, and the central location near Menaul and Candaleria. The carne adovade and red chile were just perfect, but there were eight of us, and we all had something different. Richard's Mexican Restaurant did not disappoint yesterday. We were seated and greeted by the owner. She was such a sweet lady. I ordered the lentil tacos with posole and my husband ordered the breakfast akilled with chorizo and egg over medium. The salsa had such a good flavor. The chile was not spicy but had an overall nice flavor. We were excited we got two sopapillas each. They were hot and delicious and were a great finish to the meal. Our server was excellent and made sure our ice tea was never empty. We will make sure to not let our visit such a long absence the next time. read more

This was a quick stop just to try their sopapillas so the review is just for that. The sopapillas we got had a pretty good flavor (they said made from a mix here) but were not made fresh to order and the texture was a little gummy-- not crisp even though they were fried golden, That's all we got to try but I understand they have good vegan and vegetarian options with lentils, rice, beans and chiles and don't use lard which I appreciate. read more

My husband and I wanted to try something different than our normal go-to restaurants, so we decided to try Richard's. When we got there it wasn't too packed, but you could tell they definitely have their regulars, as they seemed to be very friendly and know the people that frequent their establishment. The restaurant was clean and bright and the staff was friendly and helpful. I ordered a breakfast burrito with chorizo and my husband had a breakfast skillet. We both got the chile on the side (acid reflux issues). We also decided to share some French toast. We were given delicious complimentary salsa while we waited. It had a good heat to it. Our food came out fairly quickly. It was hot and delicious. My breakfast burrito had a lot of cheese which made it amazing! though the red chile was hot, we loved it and my husband almost finished his! All around, we will be back read more

I was told a couple of years ago by at least s couple of different people that COVID forced Richard's out of business. It's the only place with REAL fideo. I was devastated, but just assumed it was the truth. Imagine my giddiness when I ventured out of my bubble to go look at furniture and realized that they are open. In fact, they were NEVER closed. Such a great surprise! The food was amazing as always. I'm not sure what they use to season their chicken but the chicken tacos and enchiladas are perfect. And the fideo is everything it always was. I got to go here for lunch one time and very much enjoyed my vegetarian meal with its combination of foods and flavors and veggies. It's a good lunch place for vegans too. Not typical new Mexican food, as it has different ingredients and flavoring than typical here. I believe there were lentils! Absolutely NO customer service! First of all, They have not updated their hours on Yelp. We drove 40 min, 4 different times. Finally called to get their accurate hours and was told they close at 2:30. Made a final trip, walked in to be seated and were told they now close at 2:00! They have not been pleasant on the phone or in person. How can you say you're open for Lunch when you Close at 2:00!!!??? There are way too many very good Mexican food restaurants to give our business to that provide good customer service. read more

So I found this place through a co-worker who suggested it because of their Vegan options. I had the Flat Vegan Enchiladas that were made with Lentils. That was pretty dope, so I give them a thumbs up on that and that is why I'm giving them 4's. Other than that, everything else was just okay. No wow factors experienced by me. My reviews are always about the FOOD, not the service because good food trumps mediocre service or service period any day. Why? Because you can't eat service! With our 10 days of fall over, winter settled in last night with our second freeze of the year. I was chilled all morning and decided that I needed to get warm... Richard's serves real, actual fideo which is something like a Mexican spaghetti. But better. Great salsa served with store bought chips (my only complaint as I like real deal tortilla chips) and the chicken enchiladas with both red and green. I still love the food here. and I still hate the Decor. I really wanna approach the owner and come up with a design plan that's colorful like what they want, but just more modern. I'm thinking a golden natural yellow, purple eggplant, and a dark gray/black kind of a color instead of the pink and blue and pink and blue and pink and green and red and yellow... the pink & baby blue drives me absolutely bonkers. The food however is FAB! I didn't think it was possible to make "healthy" Mexican food... but they do it - and they do it SO well. Whatever you get, make sure you get a side of brown rice with lentils. It's really mostly lentils, and some brown rice. The flavor is just out of this world! Unfortunately in order to leave this review I have to rate it with a star. So that being said here is one star. And also a huge thumbs down for customer service. I didn't even have to sit down to discover that the customer service was already terrible. I stood at their door this morning around 10:15 AM as a sign said please wait to be seated. There were a couple other tables that customers were sitting down and you could tell a few other tables were needing to be cleaned off. That's OK it's a restaurant. But I stood there a good three minutes before anyone decided to lift their head and tell me... I'LL BE RIGHT WITH YOU! And her face hung to to the ground. Well, I waited about 30 more seconds I stood there and I decided that life is just too damn short and I turned around and walked out of there. I'm not going to give my money to thankless people. For me personally it's amazing how much money I will give away just because someone gave me a smile or they asked me how are you doing this morning or it's so nice to see you thank you for coming in! I have worked and gave most of my life to the restaurant business, be it the front of the house, the back of the house... I know Without a doubt that customer service is key, and with that being said if you hate your job then get out of the business because you're not gonna make any money at it. When you're mean to the customers you suck at your job and it's time to do something else. But the owners of Richards needs to know that their little staff they have going on there in the mornings are bringing you down, they're making you lose business. I could come in and retrain for you if you'd like. Because I love to retrain restaurant staff. That's what I do I'm a restaurant trainer, I am a customer service extraordinaire. The training we were at provided lunch, but nothing I could eat, so my bestie and I came here for lunch. We were both saddened by the breakfast cut off at 10:30 (we found out at check out, they do in fact do breakfast all day- we didn't see the sign because we were on the other side of the restaurant). We were sad that they didn't have fajitas, but got great lunches anyway. I got the low carb plate that claimed 3 eggs scrambled with chicken or beef (that was definitely not 3 eggs, but it was delicious and very filling) cheese, guacamole and sour cream. Funny thing. I've been going to my gym for almost three years now, and its right in the same shopping center at Richard's. I've driven right by it countless times. I was recommended to try this place by my hr manager at work, since myself and a couple other gals were taking a class next door at the Computer Corner. Lunch couldn't have arrived any sooner! We walked on over. The dining room was almost full just past 11:30 am, a very good sign indeed. The digs are a bit shall we say, old? That's okay, kind of added to the charm of the place. You can see that it is a family run business and everybody knows each other. Which I should mention our server was very nice, super sweet lady. Kept my glass full of water and even brought us a large carafe of tea for the others. The gals all ordered the same thing. The special, Chile Relleno plate with different combinations on the chile, and they all ordered the fideo as one of their sides. I on the other hand, had to try their tacos! It's kind of a thing for me. Soft corn tortilla with beans and I went with their posole as my other side. We waited patiently grazing on their complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was fresh, and cold too. The chips were airy and very crunchy. Good starter. The tacos were so good! A little hard to eat because the corn tortillas weren't really fried to much and started to fall apart from the weight and moisture of the fillings. Although I did appreciate that they weren't greasy at all. I went with one beef taco and one chicken. Both were of the shredded meat variation and very tasty. (I'm just not a fan of the ground beef taco) The beans were whole beans, not refried, which was very nice for a change. They were cooked just right, not mushy or too hard. The posole I kind of expected to come in a little ramekin but it was just a side on the plate and consisted mostly of just hominy. It was different but good. I finished my plate. Matter of fact everyone did. The best part, I didn't feel overly full or weighed down after. Even though I ate everything. Including a sopa. I almost left that part out. Bland beans, rellano in egg and smothered in cheese. Having driven past this place frequently thought we'd drop for a bite. Good reviews so why not stop. Not a lot of business so we took a seat quickly. Drinks ordered and chips delivered. Hmmm chips poured from a commercial bag sitting just behind the counter. Salsa meh. Orders placed and delivered. Ordered the combo plate with beef taco, Chile rellano, enchilada, beans and fideo and a chicken enchilada plate. The beans were bland and flavorless, I don't season food after it's been served. With all of the ingredients available to add to beans while they cook they should come out with taste. The fideo was over cooked and mushy. It tasted like the rellano was baked in egg and smothered in cheese vs egg battered and fried. The flavor of the rellano was overwhelmed by egg. The chicken in the enchiladas was dry. Always enjoy having lunch at Richard's! Start the meal with complimentary thin and crispy chips and in house made fresh salsa. Had the relleno tacos for the first time, delicious! Tasty egg battered mild green chile tucked inside a crispy corn taco shell with guacamole, lettuce and tomatoes. Will probably make this my "go to" menu item on return visits. I also enjoy their papas which are tender and creamy red potatoes that are sautéed and seasoned nicely. The papas come with the meal. I find their food freshly prepared and "cleaner" (less greasy and over-salted) than some other NM places in town. Our server (same server) that last 2 times has been friendly and attentive, even tho obviously busy. Holy mother of garlic. My poor husband later tonight. I stopped in for lunch because I needed to go to World Market. I'd eaten here once or twice several years ago when I lived away. My grandmother-in-law likes this place. I recall not liking their food, but couldn't remember why. I think I now remember. Service was pleasant and quick. I was given chips and garlic (ahem, I mean salsa). My main dish was the tamale plate with red chile. It came with beans and I selected the side of fideos. The tamale was pretty good, the whole beans a little boring and garlicky, while the fideos were over-the-top garlicky. I'm kind of dying as I write this. I think this place thinks that if they add a ton of garlic to everything and give you a whole wheat tortilla, that it must be health food. Little do they know... Went in for the first and last time last week for lunch. When you walk in there is a sign that says "Please wait to be seated". So we did. After not being acknowledged whatsoever by the woman behind the counter or the numerous waitresses passing by I went up to the counter to ask how long the wait was. The woman was very rude and told me to sit down and wait and someone would be with us. Against my better judgment we waited and finally were seated only to be served by a waitress that clearly hates her job. i understand people have bad days but come on. She not once smiled, was very rude when I asked a question and practically threw our food at us. She never even came back to ask if we needed anything. On top of all that, the food was mediocre and definitely not worth the worst customer service I've ever experienced.
