Man, what a spot to visit and try! I went here twice while on vacation in Albuquerque because I just couldn't get over how good the food was! This place has been around since 1971, and it definitely has that old-school charm and vibe. The Frontier Burrito is a very smart choice -- packed with flavor and absolutely delicious! And whatever you do, save room for a cinnamon roll! Order it after your meal so it can be freshly warmed up, and let me tell you... CHEF'S KISS! As for the dining experience, you order your food at the counter, find a table, and wait for your number to pop up on the little overhead screen (shown in my photos). There are about three different dining areas, each with its own unique decor and character. Once your order is ready, you pick it up at the end of the counter where you ordered, grab your utensils from the utensil station, and dig in! They even have bussers walking around to collect your plates when you're finished, making the whole experience easy and convenient. "Quick local and general faves right by UNM campus!" Came here at 12:30pm on a Monday-- the place was HOPPING. There was a long line to order at the counter. Still, I was impressed that the line moved fast, and that we were able pretty quickly to sit at a table for 4. The place looks like a barn from the outside, but the inside is quite large and inviting, where you order at a counter, see when your number is ready per screens, and pick up your food. I ordered the green chile cheeseburger and a side-salad with thousand island dressing. I also had a few bites of my girlfriend's sweet roll. Food was ready in under 10 minutes despite the incredibly large number of people ordering. The salad portion was pretty big-- I didn't expect that at the price of something like $4. It was good-- pretty standard lettuce/ tomato/ etc., but nothing wilted and no stems. The burger was delicious. It was a little hard to eat since the green chile sauce had made the bread pretty wet and was dripping all around. But the burger was good, the sauce excellent, and the accompaniments on the burger also fresh and tasty. The bite of the sweet roll-- wow. LOTS of butter, but man, did it taste good! The place was pretty clean overall for a large diner-like place. A nice lady came and took our trash, and the restroom seemed like it'd been maintained. We stopped by Frontier Restaurant in Nob Hill for breakfast and had a great experience! I ordered two eggs with hash browns and toast, along with an iced coffee. My husband had eggs, sausage, hash browns, and toast with an orange juice. Everything came out hot, fresh, and cooked perfectly. The eggs were just right, the hash browns had a nice crisp to them, and the portions were filling without being over the top. My iced coffee was also a great addition to breakfast. It seems like this place has been around forever. I remember passing by this restaurant as a kid and seeing the wagon wheel chandeliers from the road. Directly across the street from University of New Mexico's main entrance, this place is packed when school is in session. This place is huge, but not at first glance. Walk into the retro-looking, Western themed dining room, and you'll see a huge menu board above the order counter. There is are several freestyle soda machines in the middle of the room. There are little digital screens in the corner where you watch for your order number and a counter in the corner where you go pick up your food. It's not until you go into the next room that you discover there is another "next room," and then another. There is a lot of art on the walls, including several John Wayne pictures. The girl at the counter who took our order was an absolute ray of sunshine--so friendly and sweet. We ordered the green chili cheeseburger with onion rings and the daily special which is the "green pile-up" (beans, hash browns, scrambled egg, and green chili beef). The good came our talented quickly, and was quite yummy. Frontier is an Albuquerque classic. If it old? Yes, but it has a huge faithful following, not including the things of UNM students that pack this giant diner during the school year. Cinnamon rolls are warm and delicious (4/5 stars when fresh, 2/5 stars if you wait until the end of the meal after letting it sit out). Tacos and burritos are spicy hot, but the green chili in the Frontier burrito is a little milder than jalapeños. However, the food at chipotle is better :( I think this restaurant has lots of good reviews because it's next to the University of New Mexico campus, and $12/burrito is cheap considering they allow study groups M-F. read more

It's just a basic breakfast, but there's a reason it's on the menu of probably every restaurant in the US. They offer carne adovada as one of the meat options. It always sounds like a lot more food, but it probably isn't overwhelming in this dish. I loved the meal. They know how to make scrambled eggs right (though no one can top my dad's). The hash browns were perfect, and the bacon was outstanding. True confessions: I still need to try their burgers. Next time! The food is worth it, and the price is reasonable since it's across the street from UNM, and mostly students go here. The service has always been great. I like how you have to wait for the green light to turn on before walking up to one of the many cashiers to place your order. I don't think Frontier has the best food in New Mexico, but it's definitely an Albuquerque staple and worth a visit for the experience alone. It's fascinating to see how smoothly the whole system runs! Don't be intimidated by the long lines. They move fast, and there are even signs showing estimated wait times depending on where you're standing. There's plenty of parking in the back, and tables are cleaned quickly between guests. We decided to share several items: the famous cinnamon roll, a breakfast burrito, carne adovada burrito, green chili hash browns, and the Frontier burrito. Since I can't handle spicy food, I asked for the chili sauce on the side for my breakfast burrito. Surprisingly, our favorite ended up being the carne adovada burrito which is the red chili-marinated pork, it had a bit of heat but was delicious! The green chili hash browns were also really tasty. The cinnamon roll, however, was a little bland, and the Frontier burrito felt too heavy. Te gusta! TBH, NM's food scene was underwhelming during my time there, and it was pretty disappointing to get food from the hearth that was more mediocre than the stuff we get on the East Coast. We ate from the border crossing past El Paso all the way to Taos, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque. And I'm sure we missed a ton of great places, but that being said, the places we did try... yikes! We rolled the dice on this place. At first I was like, "Great, another place that is going to give us a premade tortilla and some bland combination of stuff in the tortilla..." Now look... this is not a Michelin-starred place, nor is it Michelin-recommended. It's not going to be a spiritual experience. It's not going to make you think differently about a taco, an enchilada, or anything else on their massive menu. But this place has heart, soul, and there's a lot of hustle. The tortillas are made fresh, right there behind the counter (i.e., you can literally watch them crank them out), and that makes a ton of difference. The food is honest, without pretense: fast and affordable. The ambiance is equally without pretense -- college kids, working-class folks, families, academics... The food was simple, spartan, and honest. No frills. Not extraordinary, but above average for the context. There is an ASTOUNDING amount of variety on the menu, and the combinations are infinite. I very much enjoyed my meal, I very much enjoyed the people-watching, and I very much enjoyed the experience. This was perhaps the best meal I had in New Mexico -- the cheapest, and the most memorable.
