Showed up at Char on a Sunday morning at 11:42 AM. The restaurant is only 20% filled. Me: Hi, I would like a table for 1 please. Hostess: Do you have a reservation? Me: No. Hostess: I'm sorry but we only seat people with reservations right now. Me: [Look around at the empty table]. Ok. [Leaves] Me: [As I was walking out the hotel doors, I open up OpenTable and make a reservation for 12 PM. Then I walk back into the restaurant.] Me: Is this sufficient? [Shows the hostess my reservation]. Hostess: Yes. But we can only seat you at 12. Me: But you have all these open tables. Hostess: Yes but they have reservations. Me: So are you telling me that somehow all these reservations are going to show up in the next 18 minutes, and if there isn't an open table you will boot someone out of an existing table for me at 12? Hostess: Yes. Me: Can you see how ridiculous this is? I mean, I'm not trying to give you a hard time but you have all these open tables. Char is amazing! From the nice welcoming entrance to the clean spacious dining room, the perfectly set tables and excellent service. There is not a bad thing to say about this restaurant. The specialty drink menu is fun, good wine list, and the menu is a mix of delicious flavors that will make it hard to decide what to order. We ordered the wild mushroom tacos that were one of my favorite things I ate that night. The Green Chile stew was really good but warning, it is spicy, and the PUERCO MILANESE "SECRETO". That dish sounded interesting and it was. The Manchego, arugula and egg just work perfectly with the meat. They also have a chile sauce flight for those who can tolerate heat and want to try the different types of chiles from the area. At the end, we were too full for dessert but I do recommend at least asking for the menu. Won't ruin the "surprise" but it's a very cool presentation, and honestly sad we did not have room to try some of them. Truly recommend Char, even more for special occasions. read more

It was pretty mediocre. I had a cheeseburger. They put it on a square piece of wood that is much higher than a plate. They are trying to be cool but it's so 1990. The waiter was nice enough but the food is just ok so I wouldn't go back. It was also not crowded ( which did worry me when I walked in because it was 12:30) and no bartenders so you could not order a margarita. Lame. Sorry Char - you need to do better. read more

Came in here for dinner a few night ago while here on business. Inside a Hotel, the service here was above and beyond. Did the Wagyu asada with mushrooms and potatoe sides. Food was great and had zero complaints really, ok actually there is one. Whatever meat you order; order rare only. The hot plate the serve it on continues to cook it through the eating experience. By the time you get to the last few bites, the meat is well done working its way to leather. Other than that it was great all around read more

Pretty darn good. We just got into down, checked into our place, and couldnt wait to take our uber to the Char. We had heard good things about this new spot in town and had high hopes. The entry was inviting as we arrived. A guy was playing some acoustic guitar at the entrance. After a short wait we got our table in their beautiful large room. Out attentive server was on top of things and had our order out pronto. I had gotten a few small dishes, starting with a flight of salsas. That was fun. Then the green chili stew and mushroom tostadas came out. Both were fantastic. The beverages were very good. And overall we had a nice time. It's already one of the best spots in town. read more

All I could ever want is guacamole like that at Char. I'm still thinking about it. There's also something so very extra about eating good guac and chips in a setting that's tres elegante. I don't eat meat but this reminds me of a retro 80s steak restaurant that my parents would have been set on for special occasions and I like it. I'll be honest and say the mushroom tacos weren't my favorite. They are able to modify and make them vegan but for the price, marinated mushrooms with literally nothing else on two tortillas doesn't thrill my taste buds. This is a great little restaurant inside a hotel near the convention center and Oldtown Albuquerque. The restaurant was beautifully designed and ample seating and a small bar area. I ordered the grilled romaine salad with a carne asada add on. The wilted style salad was fresh and had some type of nuts included. I also had a great local wheat beer from Santa Fe. The bartender was the host and server as it looks like they were short handed. Overall, I would return for this great place just off the main drag in downtown. read more

I've been meaning to try out Char, and last night I finally got the chance! We were searching for a late night (8:45pm) dinner spot to enjoy that also had vegan options and came to Char! We got guacamole first, which was soooo bomb. It was sprinkled with pepitas and had pickled onion in it, along with extremely fresh avocados. The salsa was good too, very flavorful and light. I had the carne asada tacos which were fairly small for the price ($20), but tasty! Our server was super nice and attentive and all of the food came out quickly. My son and I were in ABQ a week or so ago and a former colleague of mine who lives there recommended we try Char. It was last minute and we didn't have a reservation, but we were able to grab two seats at the bar. He is over 21 but since he had a vertical license they couldn't serve him alcohol, which I thought was strange. It didn't matter because he doesn't typically drink. They did serve me as I guess I did look over 21. ;-) The food was great and the bartender was very helpful in her food & drink recs. We tried 3 (Hatch Green, Chimayo Red, and Big Jim Red) different salsas (my favorite was the Chimayo Red), a tamale, and I had a yummy cocktail, but I forgot the name. I think it had mezcal in it. We weren't that hungry and since we were staying at a hotel we didn't want to order a bunch of food. If I'm back in ABQ again, I look forward to potentially going here again and trying a few more items! read more

We came here for brunch to celebrate Mom's birthday. I wanted something different than her usual. I looked at their menu and decided this was the place. My brother and sister in law said they had been here before and enjoyed the food. It's a twist on your typical New Mexican Fare. It's located inside Hotel Andaluz. I ordered the green chili cheese biscuits & gravy. Biscuits & gravy is one of my favorite breakfast dishes so I wanted to check out their version. It was tasty. I believe the sausage gravy was atop fried eggs instead of a biscuit. The green chili was tasty, but not hot which I enjoyed. Mom had the enchiladas. She said she enjoyed the meal. It came with potatoes. My brother had their smash burger. That seems to be his regular. He asked for mayonnaise, but otherwise he ate it and seemed to enjoy it. I don't recall what my nieces or my sister in law had, but everybody seemed content with their meals. We also had the mimosa flight. Four mimosas flavored: prickly pear, sandia, mango, and grandilla. Fantastic place for brunch and dinner located within the Hotel Adaluz. The staff were super accommodating as I arrived into town later than expected and it was close to closing time. Service during dinner was friendly and fast. I love the atmosphere as well- cozy, modern and clean with Southwest elegance and charm. I had the green chile smash burger and it was properly seasoned, juicy with just enough heat from the roasted green chilis. Even the side of fried were tasty, crisp on the exterior and fluffy on the inside. He walked us through their menu which I think is smart and efficient so customers will have a good idea of what to order. What I also admired is their cocktail menu, which includes illustrations of each cocktail and its ingredients, which I found helpful! The presentation of the food is amazing although I also believe that their food could be better which is why I am giving it a 4/5. Overall, I recommend this place. Hubs and I wanted to celebrate Valentine's Day Early last month so we decided to try Char. Our reservation was at night so parking downtown was easy at this time. Just keep in mind that there is No Valet available for restaurant guest. We started our meal with the Calamari which was very nice. Our main dishes arrived shortly after. I had "La Roca" which was a bone in chicken breast in a green chile mole sauce. It was good - it had a NM twist to it with the green chile sauce instead of the traditional. It was a nice dish but not what I was hoping for and it was quite small so I ordered myself some Esquites. I actually enjoyed the Esquites so much more than my main meal if I'm being honest - they were incredibly delicious. My hubs ordered the Branzino which he enjoyed very much but did mention he wished he had ordered a side too to make the meal more complete and more filling. For dessert we ordered the "Churros & Helado" and the "Pan De Muerto" which were a Delightful palette cleanser that we enjoyed very much. The ambience of the restaurant is nice and the staff - especially our waitress was absolutely amazing. I will say that it is a little pricey and the food portions are small but overall it's a nice place to celebrate a special occasion. read more

Char is one of those stand out dining experiences that checks all the boxes. Genuine and friendly staff, flavors galore, trendy atmosphere. We arrived early for our reservation so we decided to grab drinks in the hotel lobby and listen to the live artist serenading the guests. We were allowed to take our drinks into the restaurant when it was time for our meal. I think Antonio was our waiters name. He greeted us right away and made us feel right at home. We got the chili flight to start. We loved 2 of the 3 chilis. We also asked for some chips to dip in the chili cuz the soft tortillas were a little awkward. We shared a New York strip steak and it was cooked to perfection. The shining star however was the side of truffle oil fries. GET THEM. The only suggestion I have for them is to dim the lights a little. They were honestly too bright for the mood. read more

Jerod at the bar is absolutely fabulous. He really knows what he's doing and made us some amazing drinks. I told him the flavor profile I like, and he created some of the best cocktails I've had in a long time. His passion for what he does truly shows. Our bar experience was so good that we came back the next night for dinner with friends, as it's a beautiful place... Unfortunately, dinner didn't live up to how great the bar was. Two of us ordered bone-in ribeyes cooked medium rare, and both came out well done, which was disappointing. The server did offer a free dessert, but we declined. The fish was pretty good, but the prawns were overcooked I ate only one. The chili lime cucumbers were a standout and probably our favorite dish of the night. We also did a chili flight--we all liked the spiciest one, but the other two weren't for any of us (one tasted like enchilada sauce). We're actually having a work party here tomorrow night, and I'm really hoping the food is better for that experience. First review is an honor, but I also think I feel pretty special because as far as I'm aware, I was the first to try their brunch. At least first of the public. I came on Saturday (4/5) because I had seen that they were launching their brunch menu and it was my dad's birthday. So we joined my brother and his girlfriend for an 11 AM reservation assuming that they would be packed. I was completely wrong. We were one of two tables the entire time I was there. I guess people haven't figured out the secret yet, but I know sooner rather than later this place will be packed for brunch. The menu is the definition of sexy. I really don't think you could go wrong and we did try a variety of things. I got the ranchers Benedict, which was absolutely amazing. We also tried the biscuits and gravy, the hillbilly sandwich, and the churro French toast. The cocktails were also fabulous. I got the café de olla and it was unlike anything I've ever tried. I could've had 10. My only feedback would be there is a little bit of an issue with splitting the check. Especially because it was my dad's birthday and he tried to pay. The waiter ended up splitting our check in a very weird way. My brother and I intended to split between us 50-50 but instead he charged my dad for half of the table and then split the other half of the table between myself and my brother. Definitely weird confusion but something I've never encountered. I never went when this was Mas but the space is gorgeous. read more

From the fabulous rooftop bar with fire pits, swings, and delightful staff to the lobby bar and elegant New Mexico inspired main restaurant, Char fulfills its promise. Reservations recommended as it does get busy. Highly original craft cocktails and brilliant snacks like house smoked beef jerky (in the lobby bar) make for a very enjoyable happy hour. Management needs to make snacks available on the rooftop bar ASAP. The wine list is very curated (ie short) but many value brands are offered. I wish they had Gruet sparkling wine from New Mexico though. Especially Gruet Blanc de Noir. Start your dinner with a chile flight appetizer served with house made corn tortillas, it's not to be missed. Pick 3 chile varietals from a selection. So clever and so local. Tourists: this is a pro tip :) definitely order this. Service is still a bit uneven (but attentive) and I expect it will improve with time as everything is still fairly new. Our appetizer came out very fast but drinks were brought 15 minutes after we finished the appetizer. Great smoked old fashioned, BTW. The beet cocktail was also very interesting and tasty (but best for beet lovers - think bougie alcoholic borsht). For dinner we enjoyed wagyu sirloin steak, green chile burger, pave potatoes (pronounced pah-vay), and tandoori cauliflower. The steak came with a dazzling array of condiments like pickled onions, chimichurri, green and red chile salsas, fresh cracked pepper and two kinds of finishing salts. It's served on a 400F degree stone, which is so innovative except until you get to the end of your meal and the final bites are overcooked. Something for management to reconsider. Maybe offer an extra plate to put the steak on when it's reached the desired doneness? The burger was awesome as expected, although the fresh fries weren't as crispy as we prefer (a failing of fresh single-fried french fries in general). The cauliflower needs some rethinking, too. It's really good but the Indian flavor profile clashes with the New Mexico flavors of everything else. Personally, instead of serving a masala yogurt sauce with the roasted cauliflower, I'd pivot to more southwest flavors. A cilantro yogurt? Green chile yogurt? Even a plain yogurt? For dessert we got a pan dulce (good but a bit muddled in flavor) and espresso martini (yum). Even the dessert menu is charming with its smoking glass dome presentation. We visited again for brunch and had the green chile biscuits and gravy and rancher Benedict. Both were excellent. I especially liked the crunch from grilling the biscuits before smothering them. My only criticism is the salad served with the Benedict lacked acid and therefore wasn't as refreshing as the rich dish required for balance. Char is highly recommended. Definitely James Beard worthy, and if Michelin ever makes it to New Mexico, Char would be one of the first to get a star. read more

Associates of ours were staying at the Hotel Andaluz and spent a good deal of time talking up the Char. I've honestly never heard of Wagyu steaks on hot stones, but they are outstanding. They're actually served on 400° charcoal bricks. They also came out extremely tender and juicy. Combine that with a New Mexican vegetable medley called Calabacitas and a potato, cheese and parsley dish called Pave Potatoes and you have a meal fit for a king. The dining room is immaculate and brings a touch of class to Albuquerque. Service was impeccable, the experience was incredible. There was a cute note and rose placed on the table with our menus, and the note included a free glass of sparkling wine for each of us at the speakeasy bar upstairs. We ordered the chile flight that came with warm tortillas, an chai espresso martini, and a cosmopolitan to start. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. For our main courses I ordered the steak enchiladas and my boyfriend ordered the NY Strip Steak with the pava potatoes on the side. Everything was wonderful. The green chile was delicious and the enchiladas came with diced potatoes and beans on the side. My boyfriend's steak was super flavorful as well and perfectly cooked. Another hotel restaurant? That's what went through my mind when I learned that my daughter was hosting us for brunch at Char, on the first floor of the Hotel Andaluz. I am a very blessed man, because my daughter found the finest hotel restaurant ever. Char for brunch or breakfast is a top five dining experience in Albuquerque. Our waitress was Crystal. She presented a cool look but that all warmed up with her inviting greeting. She knew the menu perfectly and answered all of our questions. Then she took our rambling orders accurately and delivered everything to our specifications. We started with guacamole and salsa. The guac was sprinkled with spicy pepitas. It was delicious. It came with three radish slices for decoration. The chips were perfect, but I would have loved more radish slices for dipping. Next time! Nice salsa, not too spicy but very tasty. I had the green chile omelet as an entree. It was perfectly cooked, American style. It contained chorizo and some wonderful colby-cheddar cheese. No grease whatsoever -- how did they do that? It was a perfect breakfast entree. Others at the table had: biscuits and gravy -- also no grease but wonderful flavor of gravy with crumbled sausage and fine biscuits; the green chile smashburger, which delighted my son-in-law, who is a gold star griller with decades of restaurant experience; and green chile stew fashioned with wagyu beef -- tender and delicious. For dessert, we shared a plate of french toast with macerated strawberries and a delicious cinnamon coating. I managed to get most of one piece before it all disappeared to the fellow eager diners. The ambience of Char is perfect, the service is outstanding, and the food is the best you can get for breakfast or brunch in Albuquerque. The bar server Julien was very pleasant and made good margarita up , our appetizers came out fast but took up space on the bar so it felt awkward probably should have just had one instead of 3 large plates at once.
