My favorite meal this year. Very friendly staff and comfortable seating outside underneath a tree, with fairy lights above. We had the guacamole and salsa, I recommend mixing them together, they pair surprisingly well. A little pricey at $9.60 for the plate. For entrees, we had the green chile chicken enchiladas and carne adovada Christmas style. The latter is one of the most distinct and delicious regional dishes I've had. All entrees had really nice pairings with pinto beans, potato hash, and freshly cooked sopapillas. This place is like a Mom and Pop hole in the wall gem. The restaurant is small. Parking is a bit of a challenge. There are parking meters along the street and they are free after 6 pm. We stuck a few quarters into the meter that couldn't be read, and we walked into the restaurant. We were greeted at the door and given several options for seating including outdoor seating. We took a table in the entry way, not in the main restaurant. It was a quaint spot overlooking the patio section out front of the restaurant. A server met us, took our drink order, and we placed a few appetizer orders. We got some chile con queso, and the chicharron. They initially brought out the queso in two small plastic to-go containers. I was not very thrilled with that. Then, when we polished them off, they brought out some more in a small serving dish. Why we didn't get the dish in the first place is beyond me. The queso was good, but I didn't think much of the chicharron. My husband like it though. The server did an excellent job keeping our drinks filled. We placed our order, and it wasn't too long that our orders came out. I got the combination plate, red sauce, ground beef taco. My husband thought he ordered the enchilada plate, but the chile relleno plate came out instead. He told them that was fine. The ground beef taco was so delicious. The chile relleno was pretty good, and the cheese enchiladas were okay, even though it was like they were barely there. The pinto beans, not refried beans, were also enjoyed. What really set them apart was their papas - those potatoes were soft and super flavorful. Their red sauce was spicy and flavorful. The server brought out two fresh and hot sopapillas. We poured honey on those things bite by bite. I honestly think those were the best sopapillas I've had. I also used the restroom before we left. I've been here several times over the last month or so and I just ordered DoorDash from here last night right before they closed. Each and every time the service has been wonderful the food is great I love just getting the enchilada plate. Also with DoorDash everything was in the bag and the soap peel was wonderful and the enchiladas were fantastic. It took me to my upper limit of what I could tolerate heat wise, but it was still very good and I enjoyed the entire dish. I think what I like best about El Patio is the atmosphere. The indoor dining area is cozy and there is also a nice court yard you can also pick. It isn't my favorite New Mexican restaurant. There are better ones out there for cheese enchiladas--which I got on this occasion. Waitress brought fresh chips and salsa and then fresh sopapillas. Both the salsa and carne adovada were much spicier than we expected but delicious. Green chile enchilada also had a decent kick to it but not as much as the adovada. Meat was a bit on the dry side and I wish I had more chile to wet it, but still tasty and very hearty. El Patio is my favorite New Mexican food restaurant; I've been visiting regularly since the early 90's. I love everything about this place. It's located in an old house on Harvard, I think it's the last old house on that block and I hope it's there for many years to come. There's seating inside and on the patio, which is shaded by two large mulberry trees. Sometimes in the evenings (on the patio), there's a musician quietly strumming a guitar. The staff is generally friendly and competent. My favorite meal is the enchilada plate, cheese and green chile, with an over-medium egg on top. I think their green chile is the best anywhere in town-it's hot and sometimes really hot, just an fyi. Served on a plate with pinto beans (not refried) and potatoes, which are delicious. Beer and wine are available, along with non-alcoholic beverages. They serve breakfast and have offerings for the kids. Parking can sometimes be a bit of a challenge; there's a small lot in the back and parking at meters on the street. There's a parking lot across the street-it's a shame because there used to be some cute houses over there as well that housed unique small businesses, which were torn down years ago. You have to pay to use the lot; I've never used it. It's worth it if you have to walk a bit to get there. 5 Stars! read more

Recently made a trip to my old home town Albuquerque. While there we went to El Patio, which has been open for way over 50 years. I hadn't been there in many many years and was happy to see that it is still going. So we left immediately and headed over. It still has the best food around. We chose to sit in the front patio are and it was spot on nice. The ambiance is nice and the servers were very nice and attentive. I had to have a stuffed sopapilla and my wife had a flat Enchilada . Located in a quaint house south of the UNM campus, El Patio is a family-owned business serving authentic New Mexican food. The food is prepared fresh and with great care. Food - I got the seared fish tacos, which were listed as being served on Fridays only. They were okay! Not mind-blowing. My meal companions go the green chile chicken enchiladas, which are the #1 seller. I didn't try these, though I did try the sopapilla, which was tasty with honey. I got a hot chocolate, which tasted like 90% water and 10% chocolate powder. Service - it was all quick. The food and check came out quickly. The employee checked in on us enough but not too much. Ambiance - pretty pleasant. A good number of diners on a Friday afternoon but not too many. A friend and I ate lunch there this week. She suggested it but admitted she hadn't eaten there for a long time. Cute little restaurant. We were seated immediately. I ordered the combination plate: chile relleno, cheese enchiladas, taco, beans, potatoes and a sopapilla. The people who praise this food must not be locals or used to NEW MEXICAN food. We don't use poblano or ancho mexican chile for our rellenos. This chile was paper thin and tasteless. They used white mexican cheese and the breading was so thick. The cheese was also used on the enchiladas, and taco. The green chile on the side was the gravy chile Mexican restaurants use not real authenic green chile. The red had no heat at all! My friend had the same relleno and that was what she was craving. Friends avoid this place if you are looking for authenic New Mexican food and Chile. As far as service, we got our food then never saw another waiter until they brought the check. My lunch was $19.99 (without a drink) the most I have ever paid for a combination plate. If you split the check they automatically charge a 22% tip. My friend paid and I gave her cash to avoid this. Never again. The frontier is just down the street, go there. read more

El Patio is dynamite. It's in a former house converted to a restaurant. There aren't a whole lot of tables, so make sure you come early to get your spot. There is also a patio outside but it was closed due to rain. Service was quick and attentive. Our server knew the menu and made sure we received exactly what we ordered, and our party of 6 did!
