A mediocre experience all around. While the food tasted pleasant, an appetizer of crab rangoons with the best spring sauce I've had yet and some chicken pad thai, the service was adequate at best. The two employees in the front of house were either sitting down on their phones or nonexistent. Our table was only given refills of water once all of our cups had been depleted for over five minutes. Now I'm not sure whether they were on a break or not, but I was unconvinced that they put care behind their image and that of the restaurant. The chicken was incredibly dry and over cooked, so I would suggest selecting pork, which was much more delightful. While I would return for the food, I would decline an invitation to stay and experience the service again. read more

Rice Palace is not actually a Thai restaurant: it's a Hmong restaurant which sometimes pretends to serve American Thai food. It has two great virtues: it's very inexpensive, and it's interesting. As others have noted, the Thai-style standards can be heavy and oily. Venture into the Hmong side of the menu, though, and you'll be both surprised and satisfied. Everyone should try the Hmong-style egg rolls, which are big and stuffed with noodles, shreds of cabbage, and a choice of meat or more vegetable shreds, and the "grilled beef salad", which entails piles of meat mixed with bright green herbs and is served with sticky rice. If you're willing to experiment, order the "steam rolls" appetizer, which is ground pork wrapped in gooey rice dough and served with a sauce apparently composed of fish sauce and green fire, or the whole fish steamed in an intensely aromatic lemongrass broth. One warning: the spiciness scale makes no concession to Midwestern sensibilities. At some other places in Eau Claire, "hot" means "you might be able to detect the use of a pepper." I was hesitating between a one- or a two-star rating. Reading the descriptions helped me decide. Two stars is "Meh. I've experienced better" while one star is "Eek! Methinks not." My trip to Rice Palace is more "eek" then "meh". The main reason is how heavy and greasy the rice dish I got was. It was a simple fried rice dish. Most good fried rice I've had is going to have a little oil in it and slightly crispy rice. This rice was soft and the oil was a noticeable layer on the bottom of the plate. It was the overriding flavor of the dish. The service was also poor. The waitress was ok at first, but once everything was out, she never came back. They do say to pay at the counter, but if you want another item, beverage, or anything else, you'd need to go hunting. There were good parts of the experience. The beverages were good and one shining item was the spring roll. The shrimp spring roll was good and I'd suggest that one because the "pork" one contained something probably made from a pig, but I'd loosely call it pork. However, the entrée is the main reason to go and if it's not good, why go? That said, I'll may go back again in the spring if they're still around to see if the cooking has improved because I always give a place second chances. It has potential. But for now I'll stick with Pad Thai down the street and Egg Rolls Plus across the river. read more

My boyfriend has celiac disease and a dairy allergy so we don't have a lot of places he can safely go out to eat. Rice Palace is one of the only restaurants we can go to and it is wonderful because the staff is knowledgeable and were able to modify menu items for his dietary restrictions. I always hate leaving a poor review because I don't want to hurt someone's business, but I feel like I should here. To be fair, my wife's red curry was excellent, but the chicken in it was dry, and tasteless. Therein lay the problem with my meal, the chicken. I ordered chicken and broccoli stir fry, and it was just so dry and tasteless that I couldn't even finish it, and I was raised to eat what's on the table so that's saying something. I'd say the chicken was made when they opened hours ago, and kept warm to be thrown into any orders requiring it. Service was friendly but quite slow, and the gentleman didn't speak English well enough to discuss the issues in detail. The Thai tea was good though. read more

I stopped in here after finding the Indian restaurant across the street had sadly closed, and thought Thai would satisfy my craving for curry. My wife and I each ordered a different curry-based dish, and also got fried bananas to split (get it?). I must say, everything we ate was delicious, with balanced flavors and just the right amount of spiciness. Both dishes were also loaded with fresh cilantro on top, which immediately put them in a good light. I hate it when restaurants skimp on the cilantro. Pile that stuff on, friend. I rarely feel that one visit is enough to truly rate a place, but we both loved the food. The one reason it's not getting a full five-star rating is that the service was pretty terrible. It was slow (although not slow enough to get me to complain or leave), and the food came out one plate at a time, with a few minutes in between each. The decor is almost nonexistent, and it's quite a dive. Not dirty, just not fancy in any way. Looking at it from a positive angle, it just shows that they put all of their energy into the food. We saved a full meal of leftovers, and will definitely return in the future. read more

THE WORST "Thai" food I've had....someone keeps dragging me to this awful place, and for some reason, I keep agreeing and then deeply regret the decision. Pad Thai with big chunks of onion?(no sprouts, no peanuts, no carrots or cilantro??) ...that I have to season with sugar and fish sauce myself because it is just a plate of bland noodles? Curry that tastes NOTHING like curry, and doesn't even have the consistency of curry....food takes FOREVER and service is also slow. I choked down the last meal this "restaurant" has to offer. Went here when looking for Thai food on Sunday. Arrived at 7pm, closes at 8pm. We grabbed a table for 5 and it was sticky and very unclean. The owner/manager greeted us some time later and brought menus. The selection was good and we ordered 5 entrees including pad Thai, Pho bowl, fried rice and basil with chicken, pad noodle with beef and something with squid, octopus, and shrimp. We all had water and one Boba tea. All arrived some time later, taking longer than Asian stir fry should. The fried rice with chicken and the squid plate was very overcooked, even burned in some places. I showed him this when he came back and he basically ignored me. We went to pay and I told him my daughter could not even chew the food it was so hard. He said that is how they always cook it and people love it. I called BS as he was obviously lying and asked again that he remove 1 of these meals. He refused. I said rather loudly to give me the bill so I leave this place never to return. My wife, who is asian and an awesome cook, told him the Egg Roll Plus makes excellent fried rice. He said that was his brothers place. I went on a Wednesday for their $5 pad Thai special. There were a few others in the restaurant but they certainly weren't swamped. I ordered pad thai with chicken, medium spice level. When I ordered, they said it'd be a 15 minute wait. This turned into a 40 minute wait! When I FINALLY got my to go order and walked the two blocks home, I was so disappointed in my meal. The pad Thai was super bland - just no flavor to it. I mean, for a 40 minute wait and uncomplicated order, I would've expected the food to be fantastic! But alas, the food was not good. At all. I am a huge Pad Thai fan and have now given the Pad Thai at Rice Palace two chances and it will not get a third from me. There are places in Eau Claire that have better Pad Thai (which is every other place I have so far had). It is incredibly greasy, lacks the peanut flavor I seek when eating Pad Thai and is basically just flavored noodles, onions and any protein you add. I do like their egg rolls enough to go back for those occasionally, nothing too special but good for an egg roll. read more

I love this place! Best Asian food in Eau Claire in my opinion.They have the most delicious egg rolls and all the dishes I've tried are consistently satisfying. Their red curry is also amazing, I haven't been able to stray from it since I first ordered it. I'm some-what of a spice fanatic and their spice levels are always right on, which is a plus. The first couple times I came here when they first opened, the service was a little lacking but they have defiantly come around. During my more recent visits the service has been great. My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this place while looking for dinner. While we were originally skeptical about this place, we decided to give it a try. We were greeted upon entering and immediately given menus and within five minutes asked for our orders (we weren't ready). After we ordered we waited for our appetizers and entrees. Admittedly the service took a little longer than I would have liked, but despite its appearance Rice Palace has EXCELLENT food at a great price. The meal that should have cost $30+ only cost us $22. I'm very pleased to have found this place on yelp. I was in town for work and craving great Asian food. I was surprised how many people were here for a late lunch (2pm). Second thing I noticed was the speed of the kitchen. I ordered an egg roll and wings to start. Fresh out of the fryer, my food came out quickly. If you like sauces and spicy, the hotpepper fish sauce was excellent with the egg roll. The wings came out with their own spicy rub. Wasn't too spicy. They were accompanied with their own dipping sauce. It was delicious. I like good Pad Thai, and this day was no different. I ordered it with shrimp. See my pictures. I ate here a couple of days ago. It was my second time eating here. Normally I do not eat spring rolls, but theirs was fresh, full of flavor and left a lasting impression. My next meal was the stir fry. The host of the restaurant was kind, friendly and when asked, he suggested this.. My natural inclination in a Thai restaurant is to gravitate towards the curry, but I had absolutely no regrets here. It had very generous portions of chicken, shrimp, beef, squid which I substituted for more chicken all served with a side order of white rice. It was easily a meal for two people so I had my meal and lunch for the next day all for $10.65. Very tasty, fresh and and very satisfying. While I was leaving, a couple had ordered some egg rolls and I was impressed at how delicious they looked and they were huge as well. I told a friend and we are coming again this weekend. The only thing I would say I would want this restaurant to have is more comfortable seating. More booths? I am a booth gal with kids, Great food and great flavor! read more

I'm torn between the stars. I would rather giver Rice Palace 2 1/2 stars. Pros: Excellent pho, papaya salad and Kapon. Portions and price are good.They are never mad rush busy so it's a nice quiet place to go if you want to dine in peace. Cons: Terrible service staff. It's not like they are rude or anything but they are lacking in their customer service. Nobody really greets you when you walk in. Once you get your meal they don't check on you to see if you need anything else. Sometimes the drinks and other dishes are not consistent with what you may have had last. Overall, it really depends on what you want from your experiences dining out. I'm a huge customer service person because I use to waitress so bad service annoys me. The only reason why I go back once in a while is because their pho is fantastic and has been consistent each time I've visited. It's so good that I crave it . I make myself overlook the bad service just so I can have a delicious seafood pho. That is the only reason why I go back. read more

If I could, I would give them zero stars. That's how bad this restaurant is, in my opinion. I have been here twice; the first time was merely to try the steamed rolls, but they were very oily and didn't taste very well. I thought I'd give it a second chance with a date; we ate the eggrolls, with the meat tasting very strange. But as soon as we got our entrees, we had our first bite and decided to complain and ask for a refund. All of the meat tasted somewhat like beer this second time, which was utterly strange. I have been to quite a few Asian restaurants in my life, but wow, this is definitely as bad as it gets. This place is amazing! If you're used to "Americanized Asian" food or are used to Indian curry and think Thai curry is 'the same thing', you're probably going to be disappointed, but if you actually like the aromatic amazingness that is Thai food (especially the curry), you'll end up coming back over and over again. Everything tastes and looks fresh and hand made, nothing frozen or from a box/can here, it's all fresh and hand made and that reflects in the taste smell of the food. I can't honestly say I've ever had a bad experience. Excellent food aside, the staff are friendly and attentive without hovering or constantly pestering you every few minutes to ask how everything is. They'll stop by and clear empty plates and refill drinks, but for the most part, you're left to eat in peace, which I appreciate. They will also make it spicy if you ask for spicy, and proper spicy, not "well we just threw some jalapenos on it, I guess" spicy. The kind of spicy that is intense, but not so overpowering that all you can taste are the Thai chilies (which are fresh, by the way). Nothing in the area even comes close, and very few of the places I've visited in Minneapolis manage to come close to the level of authentic Thai food as Rice Palace. Portion sizes are big, to put it lightly. I usually have to get a take out box, especially with the curries and noodle bowls. They're HUGE, and that's not a complaint at all! Prices are great as well, I would have expected (and been willing to) pay twice what they charge. If I could give more than five stars, I would. ...I'd also be first in line to buy a recipe book from their cooks if they ever put one out. read more

The whole meal cost me $25 before tip. My friend and I ordered 1 plate each plus a side to share. The servers were very polite and seemed to double as the cooks. They were accommodating when it came to requests too. The problem is I'm pretty sure their first language was something other than English so whatever we said we didn't want got added as if we said we wanted it. I ordered a yellow curry with pork but the meat didn't seem to be like pork, more like old chicken with a pork flavoring. It was okay but the spice was a little hot, I did order medium heat though, which made it hard to taste anything underneath the hot flavor. There was also way too much cilantro which really made the whole thing taste weird and grassy. My friend ordered a yellow curry with pineapple. He wanted a few extra vegetables but nothing complicated. They added lemongrass in long, somewhat thick pieces, which made the meal unappetizing, and potatoes which made it stew-like. Plus, it was very thick, and there was just so many potatoes that the starch sucked up the flavor of the curry. As a side, I order the 6 Crab Rangoon, which were mediocre and edible to a certain point. The crust was over-fried to the point of browned and crunchy enough that it almost hurt to chew. The inside was runny and overall flavorless. As I said, overall, the place wasn't worth it. read more

Chicken Coconut Soup (Tom Kha Gai) Is one of my favorites and this soup broth tasted pretty good, but unfortunately, the chicken tasted very old and most, at least half of the container of vegetables & chicken etc.. were unedible. We were headed to Porter's in the downtown area, walked in and weren't greeted, it was also extremely stuffy so we walked out and noticed Rice Palace. We are both fans of Thai, and because this was a new restaurant we decided to give it a try. I love Thai food, and have traveled around a lot, this is one of my favorites. There is another Thai place in town and though they are both great, I was very please with the meals we had. We ordered the Pork Spring Rolls, Chicken Pad Thai, and Beef Drunken Noodles. Overall everything was extremely flavorful, be weary of the spice though, I ordered a medium, which normally I can handle just fine, this was a little too spicy but still flavorful. Downside: We did not notice when we ordered the Pad Thai that it came with both chicken and tofu, as we don't like tofu, we asked if anything could be done about changing the order. The waitress graciously took the plate back and remade the entire dish for us, with no charge. The service was great, and the food excellent. The location is extremely convenient, easy to find and get too, it is a relaxing and quiet place to sit down and have a meal. I highly recommend it! read more

Hmmm... I guess my husband and I are just really lucky! We've always had really good service here and the food is terrific. My favorite is their steamed rice rolls. Gets so close to homemade! And their kao poon is delicious, just like my mom's! Their pho is okay. I only get it every once in a while. I'm a favorite of Egg Roll Plus' pho. :) I will say that the service is a little slower than the other restaurants I've been to, but I guess when you're looking for yummy-almost-as-close-to-home-cooking kind of food, it's worth the wait. If I had to rank the most authentic, it would be Rice Palace followed by Egg Roll Plus. I'm not a big fan of Pad Thai (or Singha??), but it's mostly because it doesn't taste like my mom's cooking. My cousin used to be a waitress there and she said a lot of the customers were really rude. :( Like one of my teachers once said, "If you want to eat good ___ food, go to where ____ people eat!" I like to people watch so I'm always fascinated by the population the restaurant finds itself serving... Lots of Hmong people eat at Egg Roll Plus so you can be sure that it's pretty close to home cooking. I think Rice Palace is picking up too. :) Happy eating! :) P.S. Rice Palace, if you read this...
