we are locals so our food containers are normally full when we order takeout. the last 2 times we have ordered, our containers are half full and our bill is almost 100$. normally its about 75 but our containers are full. Really not impressed with the quality of our dinners. Over $60 for three meals and all were meh. The "prawns" were so tiny it was like eating all breading. There was a single piece of bbq pork, chopped into three pieces to make it look like more. There was very little chicken in the chow mein too. And the rice tasted like it had been reheated. We tried Rice Bowl today because our favorite Chinese restaurant in Brookings was closed for the holidays, and we were very disappointed with our experience there. The food was mediocre, but the service was what we will not return for. The server was unfriendly at best. She seemed irritated when we asked for napkins and seemed rushed whenever she was tending our table. However, when I went up to pay the bill, she was insulting. There was already a total showing on the screen when I got up there. I didn't know if that was mine, and she just stood there. I asked if that was my total, and she responded, very loudly and rudely, that she needed my card to finish the transaction. I was shocked at her over-the-top response. I handed her my card, refused to leave a tip, and will not be returning. read more

The person that helped us could not have been friendlier. I ordered to-go for my family while staying in Brookings. Seven entrees and two appetizers and they had it ready in 12 min. When ordering, she verified that the type of noodles were what we were looking for as some folks had been surprised (they're a little closer to soba noodles than you usually find in a Chinese restaurant). Food was good, pretty typical of what you'll find in any Chinese restaurant in Portland. Egg rolls were hot, fried shrimp a little on the small side but plenty of them and tasty, the pork fried rice was the only item that could use more flavor. My daughter was a little surprised at the gravy on her egg foo young, tasted a little like watered down soy reduction vs the typical soy style gravy, but she ate the whole thing, and it was huge. read more

Lunch specials are only on weekdays. Since it was a Saturday, we had to order off the regular menu. My husband and I split the number 6 combination plate and I ordered the large bowl of wonton soup. The wonton soup was good. I thought it needed a little salt but I liked it. The combination plate was Mongolian beef, chicken chow mien, Mar Far chicken and an egg roll. I'd rate it as "meh". There was hardly any beef in the Mongolian beef - mostly onions. The chicken chow mien noodles were good but I had a hard time finding any chicken in there. The Mar Far chicken was about five very small pieces of fried chicken. The egg roll was good but very small. That was $19 for the combo plate and $10 for the wonton soup. Something's changed. Used to be good, but last trip not so much. The General Chicken was doughy not crispy with spicy sauce. Chow Mein was margina, something odd with the noodle. To firm or undercooked. Not the usual flavor. Egg rolls are disappointin. Very sad. We drive 45 min for a good mea. Costco is an optional go to as we are so rural, so just fix it at home. Rice bowl is wayyy above the standard. My wife and I enjoy Chinese food when we dine out on occasion. We are pleased to announce that we have now found our go to Chinese food in Southwest Oregon. Perhaps the world. Our greeter/server was courteous, smiling, and very attentive to our needs. She was quick to bring us water and hot tea and to bring us our appetizer in a very timely fashion. Potstickers were wonderful. We are elderly and don't eat a lot of food so we ordered dinner plates rather than à la cart. Often times we order à la cart and end up taking over enough food for three or four more meals. This time the plates were filling and I couldn't finish even though it was a simple service because it was a generous portion of everything. While we were eating a walk-in, Customer got into a rude disagreement with our server because she felt she should be given much more in the way of free condiment additives. Our service explained that there would be a charge for more than the normal amount of sauces, but the customer was rude and left abruptly. I'm sure that this review should deter you from believing anything negative about this fabulous establishment. And no, I am not a paid reviewer. I am a well traveled well educated satisfied customer who will continue to go to this rice bowl restaurant for my Chinese food at dinner time. Very quaint restaurant with incredible food and service. The food is authentic. Each customer is treated with much respect and friendliness. Nothing in the rice, only few specks of egg and made up 3/4 of the meal, beef boring, no velveting and was gray, sauce was too sweet. Orange chicken and sweet and sour pork was not appetizing, bland rice. Got my favorite soup, hot and sour. I would describe the soup as "sweet and slightly tangy" (not hot and sour) and not seasoned properly with too much sugar and not enough black vinegar. (I do know how to make it and always get it everywhere I can) Paid $70 for 3 people, rip off, so I won't go back here. Sorry to see Dragon Palace go, but we still have Chan's. While the food was tasty both our orders were mostly filled with fillers and very little meat. If you are into noodles and meat substance isn't your concern then this place will make you very happy. First off, I'm not a snooty tourist from LA, SF, or PDX who judges this little town's restaurants based on those metros. I'm a local, and we've eaten here with family (usually take-out and especially now with COVID) probably close to 50 times in the last 10 years. I have no complaints about the food--it's not great but just OK for the price and you get big portions. And up til tonight, never had a problem with the place. I'm also not one of those social media "problem customers." I've posted twice as many positive reviews as negative ones over the years, and I have to be REALLY motivated to trash a small business publicly. But this time it's wholly justified. Because of the pandemic of course they are takeout-only now, and I went to pick up my family's order of four entrees (around $50). The owner put it in a paper bag, I paid, put the bag on the car seat next to me and left. Peachy. I drove home (10 mins. away--again I'm A LOCAL), parked in the garage, picked up the bag by the paper handles, walked halfway across the garage, and BOOM the bottom of the bag opened up and one of my 4 entrees went all over the garage floor. After my expletives, I looked at the floor behind me and saw a trail of liquid leading from the car to where I was standing. Obviously not very well packed by the restaurant. After 15 mins. of nasty cleanup, I called the restaurant and told the owner what happened and asked her if she would please replace the entree that ended up on my garage floor. She hemmed and hawed and started making excuses, "well, bag ok when I hand it to you, not my fault..." etc., etc. If you're still giving Rice Bowl the benefit of the doubt by this point, please see my accompanying photo that shows clearly that one of the containers was leaking on the bottom. I couldn't believe it. We had been eating at the restaurant for close to a decade (she should have even recognized me), and she was giving me the runaround and refused to do anything about it ("not my problem"). Arrogant business owners usually don't survive long in this town. Word gets around fast. So many AWESOME little bars and restaurants in Brookings/Harbor have been busting their butts struggling to get by since the pandemic started, and they're all bending over backwards to provide great customer service so they don't lose any more business than they already have. But we already have two other decent Chinese restaurants in town. We really don't have a need for a third with poor service like that. Hard to believe the owner made the calculation that she would rather save the $10 or so that a replacement entree would have cost her than to lose a family of regular customers for life (and probably more too when we share our story with our friends). But there you have it. Stay away, and take your business to the friendly, customer service-oriented people at Chan's or Dragon Palace instead. read more

I REALLY wanted to love this place as it is close to home, but was very disappointed. The food had very little flavor. It was there but just barely. I did taste the heat from the peppers... but very bland. The meat in the Mongolian beef was chewy. The onions in the Kung Pao was also chewy... as if it were an older onion. and then the fortune cookies were stale... They loaded my items in a cardboard box that I put on my front seat. When I got home and picked up the box the orange oily sauce from the Mongolian had leaked thru the box all over my seat... This is definitely the best Chinese in Brookings-Harbor. Our favorite dish is the Garlic Egglant, which they prepare kind of like a vegetarian Orange Chicken :) The Szechuan Tofu and Combo Veg are also reliably tasty. Portions are very good for sit-down, and just OK for to-go. I'll note that the business appeared to change hands during the pandemic, and the menu changed a bit. There used to be far more vegetable dishes, which are a strong attraction not just for vegetarians, but people who enjoy balanced meals in general. The consistency of some dishes during the transition was pretty hit-or-miss, but that seems to have settled somewhat. But worse, they eliminated some dishes from the already small Veg section, and the newer menu only has THREE vegetable dishes, to represent a country famous for them. It's really quite sad, as each meal we get from there is pretty much the same stuff. We'd go a lot more often if there was more variety in that area (green beans, broccoli, yam, a different eggplant or tofu dish, etc). It would also be great if they could substitute tofu for the dozen+ options they have for chicken and beef dishes (like Khn Thai does); this seems like low-hanging fruit, but so far no dice. It's also pretty difficult to order over the phone or online unless you already know what's on the menu, as they don't really have an online presence with an up-to-date menu. I'd think that fix would be a pretty great business decision. Still, it outshines the other local options for Chinese, so we'll keep coming back whenever we need a little treat :) read more
